He also talks about the elated feeling they both got when Shelby, who also used to tour with Della Mae, got the chance to play upright as a member of Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway.Big themes of this friend group include trust, lifting each other up, and being one another's "vibe coaches." In our conversation we talk about choosing love, connecting with your music friends in non-musical ways, and, of course, the most epic hair in Americana: Joel Timmons and his mullet. Well, today at the, a meeting with the oversight committee, the Democrats put up a, a poll about Doge, and it said that 67% disapprove of the work that Doge was doing, 38% approve, and 5% didn't know, but the math just did not add up. Just a point of clarification. The poll behind you, behind our ranking member, it adds up to a 110%. Just wanted to clarify, is it meant to add up to a 110%, or is that an error? Do you yield? Yeah. I do. This is from a Quinnipiac poll that was, held two weeks ago, and this is the data that was provided. There's a wealth of information, including information about Donald Trump's falling poll numbers, so you should take a look. Thanks. I yield back. The gentleman yields, and it still adds up to 110%. It still adds up to a 110%. Joining us right now is congressman William Timmons. Congressman Timmons, welcome to the program. Charlie, good afternoon. Great to be with you. That's quite essential democrat math. Yeah. You know Yeah. And they they made that poll up, and they just forgot that, you know, you you can only have a 100%. You can go a 110. Yeah. I'd I don't know about those Quinnipiac, polls there. But listen. You guys did have a have a subcommittee with Doge today, hearing today, didn't you? We did. We were, talking about how we're gonna work to make all of the Doge cuts permanent and the impact it's gonna have on long term spending. I thought it was great hearing. It went well. And and what are we looking at? Because that's been like a big sticking point with some of the Democrats. So just we did not get enough spending cuts in the big beautiful bill. Right? So we only could put spending cuts in the big beautiful bill that are allowed under both the rules of reconciliation Right. Particularly under the bird bath. So we are currently seeing the impacts of senate procedural rules. It's a it's a just a procedural mechanism to only get 50 votes 51 votes in the senate, and so we're gonna keep keep working on that. But that doesn't mean we're not gonna do everything else. We just gotta do those through rescissions packages and through government funding. So what cuts are we looking at with the DODE subcommittee? So, the one that we've already voted, the the rescissions packages was, the USAID, which is so ridiculous. It's not even funny. And the, PBS and NPR funding, which is just ridiculous. So, you know, we started there, but that doesn't mean that that's where we're gonna end. I think, you know, the the hard thing is is that we're talking to Democrats about how we're gonna fund the government going forward, and we need to fund the government because when the defense department, which has a near trillion dollar budget, operates under a continuous solution, it is extremely inefficient. So Yeah. We gotta find a way to come together to to fund the government. But they're looking at us going, well, wait. We agreed on this other spending, and you're just doing rescissions packages to stop the stuff you don't like. And my response to that is, well, you know, the people that voted for it would never have voted for it if they knew that you were gonna give, you know, hundreds of millions of dollars for, you know, these ridiculous government policies that have no positive impact on the American taxpayer. You're right about that. Now, Thune said that he's he kind of alluded to the fact that we might actually have that this bill by July 4. So the senate's supposed to vote on it this week. Thursday or Friday, the speaker said we are not leaving until it's done. Right. I love that. You know, the, this country deserves a birthday present, and we're gonna give it one. Yeah. And that would be a that would be a a great thing. But let's talk about the the big, big story. President Trump, his reactions to Iran. What are you hearing on in in Washington right now? All the Republicans, are are they happy about what the president did? Yeah. One or two, Republicans are not happy about it, but, I mean, ...

Bob is back and we start with a song. Tyler Kennedy talks about his daughter's dance show. Would the Oilers actually trade McDavid? What would the Pens have to offer? Has Edmonton failed him? Where would be his best landing spot? Tyler Kennedy sticks around to discuss Herb Brooks, his thoughts on bringing in Nick Bonino and the pressure he'll face, what his first big move would be this offseason. Lou Christie has passed away. Is tonight the time for TJ McConnell to shine? Why does the WNBA continue to allow Caitlin Clark to get roughed up? It seems like most of the league is jealous. The Pirates lineup from last night that never took the field was hideous. It's a 6-pack - Zach Greinke had a career SLG better than the Pirates team this year, Jack Suwinski is back, why are we not getting Skubal vs Skenes, do we owe Rodgers an apology, Shadeur Sanders was caught speeding. Joe and Pomp weigh in on the Callas US Open controversy. Will McDavid actually want to be traded? Could it turn out like LeBron the first time in Cleveland? What could Edmonton do? What are the NY Rangers doing to do with their draft pick, Beanie Bishop says there will be new calls on defense, the Pirates lineup is bad again today. Joe and Pomp both freak out. And welcome to the program. So what is the status of the big beautiful bill? Let's talk with representative William Timmons who's on with us right now. Representative Timmons, welcome to the program. Charlie, good afternoon. Great to be with you. We had a a a a very long meeting with the president this morning. It had to be almost two hours. And Yeah. You know, he told everybody to cut it out. We gotta get this done. It's it it is critical to the the future of our country, and he has asked, the the the moderate members that are demanding changes to the state and local tax deductions to to accept the the current deal, which is an increase from 10 to $30,000. And you've asked the the advocate to change additional, components of Medicaid to cut it out and to accept the deal, take a half a loss, and, we can come back for the rest later. This is not the end of us, making important changes to our tax code and to our health care system. It's the beginning. So I I had a feeling that these people are gonna listen to them, and, we'll see what happens over the next twenty four hours. Now from what we heard, the meeting this morning was, but I know we had a little bit of excitement. Right? I mean, everybody, it was energetic, should we say. It absolutely was. And, you know, he's excited. And the the the changes that we're making are so critically important to the future of our country. Just I mean, it's hard to even talk about all the all the things and get and just list them all out. I mean, the border security is such a huge one, and we're gonna be able to address a lot of deregulation and and permitting reform. We're gonna extend the tax cuts, from 2017, and we're gonna no tax on tips. No no tax on overtime. I mean, the list just keeps going on and on. So we have to do this. Is it perfect? No. Are there things that I would change? Yes. That's not how this works. You you don't get to you don't get to let the perfect be the enemy of the good. We gotta move the ball forward. It's gonna be, a big win. One of the big questions that a lot of people had was where are the spending cuts? They seem to be, missing somewhat in the big beautiful bill. Was there a lot of discussion about that? So there there was, but, you know, you gotta think. The the we're cutting out waste, fraud, abuse, and Medicaid, and that's gonna pay, for an enormous percentage of it. There's just a lot of people that are getting benefits that are not entitled to them. Right. And, you know, you you can say that that that Republicans are cutting Medicaid. Well, yeah, we're cutting it from people that don't deserve it, like illegal immigrants that are criminal criminals here. We're cutting it from people that are not eligible because they make too much money. So, I mean, yeah, I mean, we're seeking out the waste, fraud, and abuse, and this is just the beginning. I have a number of bills that will further, streamline delivering government social safety nets to people that actually need them as opposed to people that are abusing the system. We got an organized crime that is is is fleecing the government for billions of dollars because our systems are so antiquated. We're gonna we're gonna tackle all this stuff. So, I mean, when because now it's either gonna live or die on the floor of the house. When is the vote gonna happen? So 1AM, tomorrow morning or, you know, tonight, however you wanna get it, the rules committee is gonna meet. And so there's two people that have been scuffed six. Our our good buddies in the fifth, Ralph Norman and Shiproy, from Texas. And so the the two of them are on the rules committee. That'll be a big hurdle to overcome. I mean, I don't I wouldn't cross the president if I was them, but I'm not them. So Yeah. The the net, assuming assuming that we get that passed and there's likely to be what's called a manager's amendment. So there will be some some changes to the bill at at 1AM. And assuming it gets out of the the House Rules Committe ...
In a world where adulting seems to dominate every hour of the day—deadlines, responsibilities, bills—it's easy to forget that play isn't just for kids. But when it comes to relationships, a playful spirit might just be the secret ingredient to lasting love.Playfulness in romance isn't about acting childish or dodging serious conversations. It's about injecting joy, curiosity, and spontaneity into the everyday. It's about sharing inside jokes that make no sense to anyone else, laughing at each other's ridiculous impressions, and building a connection that can weather the storms of life by dancing in the rain, metaphorically or literally. What Exactly Is Playfulness in a Relationship?Playfulness is the art of keeping things light. It's not a rejection of maturity but rather a bold commitment to finding joy together. It might look like tickle fights in the kitchen, goofy texts in the middle of the workday, or creating absurd nicknames that only you and your partner could ever understand.Research shows that couples who share these light-hearted moments report higher satisfaction, stronger emotional bonds, and even greater resilience in times of stress. In other words, a well-timed joke or a burst of shared silliness can be just as powerful as a heartfelt conversation.I find in my current relationship, and in relationships in the past, the more we are laughing, the better our relationship is doing. The less laughing, things got worse or they were already bad and we just stopped trying (that's past relationships - we are trying to play all the time in my current relationship). The Science Says: Play Is Serious BusinessPlayfulness might sound like fluff, but psychologists have found that it does some heavy lifting behind the scenes in relationships.According to several studies, playfulness strengthens emotional bonds by creating positive associations. When partners laugh and joke together, their brains release dopamine—the feel-good chemical that enhances connection and trust. It also helps defuse tension during conflict, offering a “reset” button when conversations get heated or misunderstandings pop up.Play also opens up space for creativity in communication. When partners feel safe enough to be silly or spontaneous, they're more likely to approach problems with an open mind and a collaborative spirit. This is critical when you've got kids as they present a challenge into themselves. How to Invite More Play Into Your RelationshipSo how does one actually be more playful in a relationship? It doesn't require a clown suit or a full-time comedy routine. It just takes intention and a willingness to break out of autopilot. Here are a few simple ways to get started:1. Embrace the Art of the Inside Joke Every couple has their own language—those shared references, silly phrases, or code words that trigger a smile or an eye roll. Cultivate those. They create a sense of intimacy that feels like a shared secret.2. Create Micro-Moments of Fun You don't need to book a weekend getaway to bring in some levity. Make funny faces across the dinner table. Add a ridiculous twist to your daily routines. Challenge each other to a sock-sliding contest down the hallway. It's the little things that add up.3. Don't Take the Mundane So Seriously Not everything has to be optimized, scheduled, or turned into a life lesson. Dance while doing the dishes. Narrate your errands in the voice of a sports commentator. Be willing to let go of being “normal” in favor of being fully present and absurdly joyful.4. Reconnect With Childhood Joys Board games, old cartoons, blanket forts—there's magic in revisiting the things you loved as a kid. Shared nostalgia not only sparks playfulness but can also lead to surprisingly meaningful conversations about who you were and who you've become.5. Keep the Flirt Alive Flirting isn't just for the early days. It's a playful way to say, “I still choose you.” That wink across the room, the spontaneous compliment, the playful teasing—it's all part of keeping the spark burning bright. The Role of "Ludus Love"Psychologists have identified a type of love known as "Ludus," which centers around play, teasing, and lighthearted flirtation. While it's often associated with more casual relationships, elements of Ludus can be essential even in long-term partnerships. By incorporating humor, spontaneity, and a touch of the unexpected, couples can avoid the trap of predictability and keep things feeling fresh.Playfulness, when paired with trust and emotional safety, can create a dynamic where joy becomes part of the foundation—not just a fleeting mood, but a shared value. What Playfulness Isn'tIt's important to clarify what playful love doesn't mean. It's not sarcasm at your partner's expense. It's not ignoring hard conversations or using jokes to avoid accountability. True playfulness comes from a place of connection, not criticism. It's about lifting each other up, not tearing each other down under the guise of “just kidding.”Why It Matters More Than EverIn an age of chronic stress and over-scheduled calendars, couples often slip into routine. Days blur into weeks, and romance becomes another task to manage. But play cuts through that fog. It reminds us that love doesn't have to be so serious all the time. That joy isn't a luxury—it's a necessity. When couples laugh together, they stay connected. They remember why they chose each other in the first place. They build memories that are filled not just with milestones, but with moments—spontaneous, weird, wonderful moments that don't need to be captured for social media to matter. The TakeawayPlayfulness is more than a nice-to-have. It's a relational superpower. Whether it's through a goofy dance, a made-up game, or a shared laugh at the end of a long day, injecting a little fun into your relationship can deepen your bond, improve communication, and keep the romance alive. So lighten up. Let go of the need to always be productive or polished. Make room for play. Because sometimes, the key to lasting love isn't grand gestures—it's being willing to be a little ridiculous, together.ReferencesAun, Wong, (2002); Antecedents and Consequences of Adult Play in Romantic Relationships; Personal Relationships 9(3), 279-286. https://doi.org/10.1111/1475-6811.00019Baxter, (1992); Forms and Functions of Intimate Play in Personal Relationships; Human Communication Research, 18(3), 336–363. https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1468-2958.1992.tb00556.xBrauer, Proyer, Chick, (2021); Adult playfulness: An update on an understudied individual differences variable and its role in romantic life; Social and Personality Compass; 15(4). https://doi.org/10.1111/spc3.12589 This research paper is summarized in the article How Playfulness Improves Relationships; Psychology Today, August 15, 2024Gold, Timmons, et al (2024); A day in the life: Couples' everyday communication and subsequent relationship outcomes; Journal of Family Psychology, 38(3), 453–465 https://doi.org/10.1037/fam0001180 This research paper is summarized in the article How Playfulness Keeps a Romance Alive; Psychology Today, April 18, 2024.Metz, McCarty, (2007); The “Good-Enough Sex” model for couple sexual satisfaction; Sexual and Relationship Therapy 22(3), 351–362https://doi.org/10.1080/14681990601013492 Proyer, Ruch, (2011); The virtuousness of adult playfulness: the relation of playfulness with strengths of character; Psychology of Well-Being 1(4). https://doi.org/10.1186/2211-1522-1-4 This is a public episode. Charlie James interviews SC House Representative William Timmons
Over the past several years, the debate around the 150-hour requirement for CPA licensure has centered on the need to streamline the accounting talent pipeline. But behind that discussion lies a broader, more ideological narrative—one that has been building over the past two decades—about the role of occupational licensing in general, and the CPA license in particular. In this episode of the FEI Weekly Podcast, we speak with Dr. Edward Timmons, Associate Professor of Economics and Founding Director of the Knee Regulatory Research Center at West Virginia University. As you'll hear, Dr. Timmons offers a unique perspective on the CPA licensure debate and breaks down the costs, consequences, and possible alternatives to the 150-hour rule—along with what reforms could mean for the future of accounting talent. Special Guest: Dr. Edward Timmons.

"Toxic empathy" is in the news, the idea that we can cause harm by being over-sensitive to others. But, wait: Jesus was known for his empathy, even though he wasn't easy on sin. Tim Timmons, Mike Erre, and Suzie Lind search for the line between seeing someone's circumstances and condoning bad behavior. First, though: Birds are real for the Timmons family. So, don't flip it off before the empathetic content starts at 12:08. - - - - -Have a question or comment for the NOW team? Join the conversation by texting us at +1 615 861 9503.
