Ideal Conditions pointed its compass east for this episode. When the needle stopped spinning, it landed on two Polygon stalwarts, Larry Waltemire, Business Unit Manager, and Rich Shoemaker, Business Development Manager, helming out of the East Region. Waltemire and Shoemaker have over forty-six years of experience working at Polygon, and there aren't too many situations they haven't come across in all that time.“From disasters to chicken plant needs, to everything imaginable, we've seen it all,” Waltemire said. “But every now and then, you get a curveball thrown at you, and you get a new twist on some of the things we've done in the past, and we're able to take from that experience and come up with solutions,” Shoemaker added.Coming up with those new solutions brought to mind a recent project of a customer with a seven million cubic foot warehouse full of dry products with no humidity control in the building. “It was our job to come up with a solution for that humidity problem,” Waltemire said. “Their main concern was that the product, which was coming in from all over the world, might have an insect larvae hatching that could be in the packing material. It was our job to solve that problem.Keeping humidity consistently down to less than 50% in a seven million cubic foot building is no small feat. Polygon had to size the solution for a space not yet filled with the product. “Our solution was two, fifteen thousand CFM desiccant dehumidifiers, and those units have three supplies and three returns,” Shoemaker said. “So, we could take air through the unit and put it back into the space. We took six supply ducts, three from each unit, and we spidered those out into the space. We took one duct and ran it over to the loading dock doors because that was the only source of bad air infiltration.”

Host of Ideal Conditions, Tyler Kern, sat down with both Victor Games-Bazan, business unit manager, and Austin Jones, business development specialist, of Polygon's West division to talk about how the work has been and what special issues the team has to solve. With the aim of providing insulation for buildings of all types undergoing construction, the West Team has had the interesting experience of working with cities that are often seen as having “perfect weather.”When talking about a job for the San Diego court house, Games-Bazan said it was an ideal project for showcasing their abilities. “That building was twenty-two stories. We conditioned all of that from beginning to end,” he explained. With a project so large, this process ensured the team met the specifications of those working on the building. “The customer, Turner Construction, actually built us a twenty-two-story scaffold that went up the side of the building, wrapped it in shrink-wrap, insulated it, and that's what we actually used to distribute the air into the building,” Games-Bazan described. The USA has many different regions that all have their own ecosystems, which can make construction work a very different operation depending on where it's being done. Regarding how to deal with the various climate types, Jones said, “Cities in and of themselves can create microclimates, so a downtown metro filled with skyscrapers, those buildings will retain heat and will naturally be a warmer area than somewhere that's more rural, dense vegetation, away from the coast.” Jones also mentioned that, when working in these cities, his team also does research on weather by looking at historical data to see what the climate has been like in the past, going even as far back as a hundred years.
Climatize a workspace hundreds of feet under a lake? Bruce Zawisky and Nick Cooper of Polygon South discuss recent projects with unique solutions. As weather shifts, innovation is more critical than ever. Polygon is trail-blazing new builds and renovations in the south.Working with a connection of general contractors, Polygon recently finished a precise hospital system for Children's Healthcare in Atlanta. “Hospitals have a lot of strict guidelines, so we have to have open communication,” said Cooper, the Business Development Specialist in Atlanta. The team and general contractors had worked together previously, and collaboration came naturally. The south experiences extremes in all four seasons, “the focus was on high-quality, year-round climate control,” said Zawisky, Business Unit Manager of the south. The administration wanted to track energy use across four buildings into an IoT system. The system would allow the hospital to track and streamline its regular energy use. Measuring is key to maintain standards and restrictions. According to Hospital Review, healthcare systems all over the country are working toward climate goals. Sustainability is a crucial part of everything Polygon does. “We're not going to over-engineer anything, and we're not going to under-engineer. We want to make everything as sustainable as possible,” said Zawisky. That is true in the other project discussed. Climatizing a workspace. To make things even more complicated, the workspace sits hundreds of feet under a lake, and the design only had 24 sq. in. for the elements included.
Host of Ideal Conditions, Tyler Kern, spoke with Business Unit Manager, John C. Pfeffer, and Business Development Specialist, JT Gunter, on four interesting — yet uniquely challenging — projects that exemplify their expertise in climate control and problem solving, and how they utilize data to keep customers competitive in today's world. What does a limestone cave, state capitol building, hockey arena, and pharmaceutical manufacturing warehouse have in common? Well, they all needed a climate control solution and knew Polygon would be able to navigate their projects' unique needs and many challenges. In fact, the team was able to overcome some truly great odds — like encountering technological communication issues within the cave; witnessing a tornado threaten to damage the capitol's structure; navigating a giant, passionate hockey fan celebration; and even working through the strict health regulations during the height of a pandemic. The two guests recount how they tackled these projects with ingenuity and thorough planning. This looked like wrapping the entire Missouri State Capitol building in a thick poly — described humorously as “bubble wrapping” by Gunter— remaining in constant communication with contractors, relying on key internal stakeholders for advisement, and so much more. According to Pfeffer, “It's challenging but… it's fun. You're in a high-profile situation… and it's definitely worth the effort.”Clearly, the team enjoys tackling these challenging projects and do so with ease. However, one technological piece the two elaborated on is Polygon's monitoring system, which can now sense temperature readings and even particulates, depending on what the customer needs.
