From the White House to Iran's former crown prince, proponents of the U.S.–Israel war on Iran sell it to the American people — and Iranians themselves — as a crusade for liberation. Instead, the regime remains in place as the death toll grows, environmental hazards proliferate, and civilian infrastructure is decimated. More than 1 million Lebanese people have been displaced.“I think the Lebanese are suffering now, and there's not really anyone who's trying to save them,” says Afeef Nessouli, a Beirut-based journalist, speaking to The Intercept Briefing. “They know that, and they know that they're just political pawns who are always at the worst end of the stick along with Palestine.” He adds, “The fear is that [Israel] will occupy south of Litani [River] ... and just take people's homes, take their land, and never give it back, make settlements for their country.”“It's been really stunning to watch that so many people fall for this idea of ‘This is a human rights intervention' — and yet it's accomplished through massive human rights violations,” says Ali Gharib, a senior editor at The Intercept. Commenting on Israel's strategy of making failed states out of its adversaries in the region, he notes, the Israelis “don't need [Reza] Pahlavi to work. They don't need him to go in there and become this democratic leader. They just need him to lead a movement that damages the regime enough to put Iran into some kind of fractured state or state failure where it's not a threat to Israel anymore.”“We've had in the last 20 to 25 years, especially since the Iraq War in 2003, a lobby pushing for regime change in Iran,” says Sanam Naraghi-Anderlini, a veteran peace strategist. “The Iraq version of regime change ended up being a catastrophe from a U.S. perspective, but actually from an Israeli perspective and from a Saudi perspective, and even from a UAE perspective, the decimation of Iraq has been a success because if Iraq had turned out to be a liberal democracy, it would've challenged Israel on the question of Palestine. It would also affect social organizations and churches.  International Christian Concern noted, “Christian home churches are an attempt to escape government scrutiny, but even they are often raided and their members arrested on charges of working against the interests of the state.” China is ranked 17th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of the most oppressive countries to be a Christian.  Trump postpones trip to meet with Chinese President China will have to reschedule a meeting with the United States as the war in Iran continues. U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday he will postpone his trip to Beijing. The trip was scheduled for the end of the month. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping plan to discuss trade tariffs. The trade war between the two countries has been on pause since last October.  Commenting on the postponement, President Trump said, “Because of the [Iran] war, I want to be here. I have to be here.” Israel killed Iran's top security official on Monday Israel killed Iran's top security official, Ali Larijani, in a strike on Monday. Larijani was likely running the country since U.S. and Israeli strikes killed Iran's supreme leader last month. The recent war has lasted nearly three weeks so far. The vote ends two years of national debate on the issue. Alisdair Hungerford-Morgan, Chief Executive of Right To Life UK, said, “This is a great victory for the most vulnerable in our society. They deserve protection and care, not a pathway to suicide. If this legislation had passed, countless vulnerable people would have been pressured or coerced into ending their lives.”  Moody Bible victorious in religious liberty case In the United States, a Christian college won its religious freedom case against the Chicago Board of Education. Previously, the city's public schools blocked The Moody Bible Institute of Chicago from participating in its student-teaching program. The college could only participate if it compromised its Christian hiring practices. The public schools backed down after the lawsuit.  Jeremiah Galus with Alliance Defending Freedom commented, “We're hopeful other public officials will take note that they can't inject themselves illegally and unconstitutionally into a religious non-profit's hiring practices.” YouVersion: No AI chatbots to answer theological questions And finally, a leading digital Bible platform is not implementing artificial intelligence chatbots for answering theological questions. Irish drivers continue to show interest in electric (EV) and hybrid vehicles, while carefully weighing cost, charging confidence and real-world ownership considerations, according to new findings from the Carzone 2026 Motoring Report. The latest national survey shows that a third (32%) of drivers plan to purchase a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle next. Hybrids remain the most popular alternative fuel choice, with a fifth (19%) planning to buy a hybrid, while 10% intend to buy a fully electric vehicle, indicating a gradual shift away from petrol and diesel rather than a complete behaviour change. Cost remains the most influential factor in decisions around electric vehicles. Four in ten drivers (40%) cite upfront price as a factor preventing them from making the switch, followed by concerns around reliability (31%) and electricity costs (28%). Alongside cost, confidence around EV ownership is being shaped by widespread misinformation and uncertainty. While the EV market has evolved rapidly, perceptions have been slower to catch up. Seven in ten drivers (69%) believe electric vehicles are more expensive to buy than petrol or diesel alternatives, despite increasing price parity and a growing number of more affordable models entering the market. Concerns around depreciation also persist, with six in ten (59%) believing EVs lose value faster. Nearly half of drivers (47%) think electric vehicles cost more to run, although more than one in five (22%) actively disagree, highlighting a clear gap between perception and real-world ownership experience. Charging infrastructure is also front of mind. Seven in ten drivers (71%) say there are not enough public charging points in Ireland, while 62% believe charging an electric vehicle takes too long. More than half (58%) say electric vehicles do not offer sufficient range for everyday driving. For those who have already made the move, experience differs from perception. Among current EV owners, 86% cite lower running costs as a key benefit, while 65% say they primarily charge their vehicle at home. Commenting on the findings, Conor Faughnan, Carzone's Independent Motoring Expert, said: "Irish drivers are taking a thoughtful approach to electric vehicles. Interestingly, the survey shows that while 18% of those planning to buy new are considering an electric vehicle, that figure drops to just 4% among used car buyers. This demonstrates what motorists are weighing up, from cost and charging to reliability. The findings also show that for those who already own an EV, the experience around running costs can differ from expectations. Having access to clear, independent information and advice is key as drivers consider making the EV switch." The Carzone 2026 Motoring Report is based on a nationally representative survey of 1,000 Irish drivers conducted in November 2025. The report forms part of a wider examination of how motorists are navigating changing fuel choices, ownership costs and vehicle technology. 65% of respondents use free external GenAI in work or pay for the tool themselves, Deloitte's third GenAI pulse has found. Only 35% work for an employer that pays for their external GenAI. Despite this, the number of companies encouraging GenAI use has nearly doubled compared to 2024; nearly half (46%) of respondents work for a company that encourages the use of GenAI. In contrast to 2024, when less than one-quarter (24%) strongly agreed or agreed that their company encouraged its use. The findings come from Deloitte Ireland's third GenAI pulse survey as part of the Digital Consumer Trends report, where 1,000 people between the ages of 18 and 75 were surveyed in Ireland. The number of respondents who said their workplace has policies or guidance about the use of GenAI for work purposes has jumped. In 2025, just 19% of those surveyed said their company does not have a policy or guidance, but in 2024, 90% of employees reported a lack of guidance or policies. Talent remains the biggest challenge for embedding AI, with 84% citing skills gaps as the main barrier, according to additional Deloitte AI research published last week, which gathered views of C-suite leaders and directors in Ireland. Commenting on the report's findings, Lynn Guilbaud, Technology, Media & Telecommunications Leader in Deloitte Ireland, said: "Everyone has heard the expression people won't be replaced by AI, but will be replaced by people using it. This is why it's positive to see a growing number of organisations with policies and guidance around its use. This technology isn't just a tool; it's a game-changer that can revolutionise how we work, boosting efficiency, unlocking new levels of productivity and fundamentally transforming the competitiveness of organisations that embrace it. "But this won't happen overnight. To harness AI's potential, organisations need to invest in ongoing training and support, guiding their teams every step of the way." There is a clear gap between generations' GenAI use, despite awareness being high across age groups. The GenAI pulse survey shows more than 4 in 5 (83%) of Gen Zs and 76% of Millennials use GenAI, but this drops to just over half (57%) in Gen X and only one-in-three (33%) of those aged 60-75 years old. The most common reason to use the technology is for personal purposes (75%), followed by work (42%) and education (36%). The reasons for using GenAI are consistent with those reported in 2024, although there was a 12% increase in people using it to look up information (44% vs 56%). Searching for information, writing and editing emails, and generating ideas are the top three reasons GenAI is used. Since 2023, a consistent number of GenAI users (more than one-third) believe AI always produces factually accurate responses – 35% in 2023, 34% in 2024, and 34% in 2025. This is similar to the number of users who believe the technology's responses are unbiased – 31% in 2023, 28% in 2024, and 32% in 2025. 64% actively use AI tools. In contrast, 4 in 5 passively engage with GenAI, including web search summaries or AI-generated content on social media. Nearly two-thirds (62%) have noticed AI-generated web search summary and 64% AI-generated content on social media. 40% come across AI-generated news articles written by AI. In this interview with BizNews, energy expert Thomas Garner looks at the reasons behind the warning in ESKOM's Medium Term Adequacy Report that loadshedding could return in 2029. He describes the various challenges ESKOM would have to overcome to prevent that, and shares what is possible to achieve in new grid capacity with different technologies: coal, nuclear, gas, solar and wind. He stresses that the challenges are “systemic and it comes a long way” and is also as a result of “the monopolistic nature of the animal ESKOM”. Commenting on President Cyril Ramaphosa's SONA statement that the National Transmission Company will be independent being contrary to what ESKOM and the Minister of Electricity had wanted, he says: “There's different factions within ESKOM. There's the faction that wants to see privatisation, a market, and full unbundling and then there's a faction that doesn't want to see it and wants to see the monopoly stay intact as it has been for the last hundred years. So it depends who's the management and it depends who's allowed to have the loudest voice.”

Irish drivers continue to show interest in electric vehicles and hybrids, while carefully weighing cost, charging confidence and real-world ownership considerations, according to new findings from the Carzone 2026 Motoring Report. The latest national survey shows that a third (32%) of drivers plan to purchase a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle next. Hybrids remain the most popular alternative fuel choice, with a fifth (19%) planning to buy a hybrid, while 10% intend to buy a fully electric vehicle, indicating a gradual shift away from petrol and diesel rather than a complete behaviour change. Cost remains the most influential factor in decisions around electric vehicles. Four in ten drivers (40%) cite upfront price as a factor preventing them from making the switch, followed by concerns around reliability (31%) and electricity costs (28%). Alongside cost, confidence around EV ownership is being shaped by widespread misinformation and uncertainty. While the EV market has evolved rapidly, perceptions have been slower to catch up. Seven in ten drivers (69%) believe electric vehicles are more expensive to buy than petrol or diesel alternatives, despite increasing price parity and a growing number of more affordable models entering the market. Concerns around depreciation also persist, with six in ten (59%) believing EVs lose value faster. Nearly half of drivers (47%) think electric vehicles cost more to run, although more than one in five (22%) actively disagree, highlighting a clear gap between perception and real-world ownership experience. Charging infrastructure is also front of mind. Seven in ten drivers (71%) say there are not enough public charging points in Ireland, while 62% believe charging an electric vehicle takes too long. More than half (58%) say electric vehicles do not offer sufficient range for everyday driving. For those who have already made the move, experience differs from perception. Among current EV owners, 86% cite lower running costs as a key benefit, while 65% say they primarily charge their vehicle at home. Commenting on the findings, Conor Faughnan, Carzone's Independent Motoring Expert, said: "Irish drivers are taking a thoughtful approach to electric vehicles. Interestingly, the survey shows that while 18% of those planning to buy new are considering an electric vehicle, that figure drops to just 4% among used car buyers. This demonstrates what motorists are weighing up, from cost and charging to reliability. The findings also show that for those who already own an EV, the experience around running costs can differ from expectations. Having access to clear, independent information and advice is key as drivers consider making the EV switch." New data published by LinkedIn has revealed that despite Europe showing lower levels of hiring and signs of candidate fatigue in major markets, the Irish jobs market remains competitive. Trends in LinkedIn's December jobs data illustrated the candidate fatigue in Europe, with applications per jobseeker falling, with the largest drops in activity recorded in the United Kingdom (down -7.9% YoY), France (-5.7% YoY), and Germany (-3.7% YoY). In contrast, Ireland saw a +2.4% year-on-year rise in applications per candidate. An applicant's network is becoming more important than ever, with LinkedIn data showing that applicants are 3.6× more likely to get hired if connected to an employee at the organisation they are applying for a role at. In the near term, AI is creating more jobs globally than it is replacing. In the past two years, employers across the world have created at least 1.3 million "new collar" AI-related job opportunities, including data annotators, AI engineers, and forward-deployed engineers. Demand for AI talent is outstripping supply in Ireland, with the country becoming a net importer of skilled workers. AI engineering talent is 8x more likely to move across borders than the average LinkedIn member. The LinkedIn data showed a +2.2 net increase in net migration of AI engineering talent (per 10k members) to Ireland, placing Ireland second in terms of net beneficiaries globally. The UAE (+4.2) was the biggest AI talent magnet globally, with the top five rounded out by Germany (+2.1), Australia (+1.5) and Singapore (+1.2). Finding The Talent For "New Collar" Jobs Many "new collar" jobs did not exist five years ago, and demand for talent outstrips supply. Organisations having the greatest success in filling their AI talent bench are those that are upskilling existing staff. Skills, not degrees, are becoming the differentiator. Companies can grow their internal AI-capable talent pipeline 8.2× by focusing on skills over job titles or degrees. Interest in AI skills among employees is there, as demonstrated by the time spent on AI-related learning courses on LinkedIn, accelerating over the past year. Commenting on the data, LinkedIn Ireland Country Manager Cara O'Leary said: "While many European countries are showing clear signs of jobseeker fatigue, Ireland is moving in the opposite direction. At a time when applications per candidate are falling in the likes of Germany and the UK, Irish jobseekers are switched on and still confident of finding their next role regardless of economic uncertainty." "Our data shows who you know is just as important as what you know, with candidates significantly more likely to be hired when they know someone at the organisation, reinforcing the importance of relationships alongside experience. For employers, this highlights the growing influence of their own people in attracting talent, with referral schemes one option to incentivise staff." "Demand for 'new collar' jobs continues to outpace supply, but Ireland is proving to be an AI talent magnet, successfully attracting more AI engineers to these shores than those departing. Given that many of these jobs simply didn't exist five years ago, with the pipeline from the education system playing catch-up as a result, companies need to realise that upskilling is the solution. We have never seen higher levels of interest in AI content on LinkedIn, so people are clearly eager to learn. Broadband network operator, SIRO, has concluded an agreement with broadband retailer, Imagine, which will give the retailer access to SIRO's full fibre network. The deal will allow Imagine to sell fibre broadband products and services to over 700,000 residential consumers across Ireland who have existing access to the SIRO network. SIRO's network now reaches over 150 towns and cities in every county in Ireland as it continues to roll out its network. As a wholesale network operator, SIRO partners with broadband retailers, such as Imagine, who resell its network to residential and business customers. The agreement enhances Imagine's offering to provide an extensive fibre to the home (FTTH) network across Ireland and complements their ambitious plans to significantly grow its customer base. In addition to providing access to SIRO's fibre network, new and existing Imagine customers will enjoy SIRO's high-quality, high-speed fibre broadband offering speeds of up to 5 gigabits for residential consumers. SIRO's broadband network is built with a capacity of up to 25 gigabits, ensuring that it is primed and future-proofed to meet bandwidth requirements as they grow over time. Commenting on the agreement, SIRO Chief Commercial Officer Ronan Whelan noted that: "Today's partnership is good news for Imagine customers, ensuring they can enjoy SIRO's fast, reliable and trusted fibre broadband. Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment Darragh O'Brien has announced significant new funding of almost €35 million to further support local authorities as they continue to drive forward climate action in our communities. This funding underpins the continued commitment of Government to local climate action and recognises the key role of local authorities in supporting communities as we transition to a climate neutral economy. €35 million for climate action in communities €30 million START Scheme to support local climate action As part of the European Union's Just Transition Fund (EU JTF) programme, which is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the EU, €30 million is being provided to local authorities in the Midlands EU Just Transition Territory to support their local climate action. The new scheme, Supporting a Sustainable Transition through Climate Action for a Resilient Territory (START) will support Local Authority-led Climate Action Plan infrastructure projects and feasibility studies that align with the EU JTF programme. The types of projects that local authorities can submit for consideration under this closed call include but are not limited to: Renewable energy solutions, enhancing community engagement, promoting sustainability; Enhancing energy efficiency of public and community buildings; Active travel and sustainable transport; Transforming former landfill sites into tourism/recreational spaces, developing community/heritage spaces, enhancing public amenities. Additional €4.9 million for Local Authority Climate Action: A further €4.9 million is also being made to support Local Authority climate action across Ireland. This will break down as follows: The three Irish cities in the EU Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Mission – Cork, Dublin and Galway – will be able to access funding of €2 million next year. This will help the cities to deliver projects which move them to becoming climate neutral by 2030. A new fund of €1.5 million will be set up to assist local authorities with their Decarbonising Zones (DZs). DZs are spatial areas which have been selected by local authorities as the focus for climate mitigation, adaptation and biodiversity projects. There is a new €2.5 million European Regional Development Fund scheme for local authorities in the northern and western region. It offers funding for local projects in Decarbonising Zones on adaptation or the protection of biodiversity and green infrastructure. The Department is committing €1 million in funding. Climate Action Regional Offices (CAROs) will receive €2.4 million in 2026 – an increase of €400,000. The offices support local authorities to deliver climate action, helping them develop local climate plans and sharing best practice across the regions. These announcements follow a funding commitment at the end of 2025 of €26.9m to fund community climate action projects and a Community Climate Action Officer in each Local Authority to 2027. Commenting on the funding, Minister O'Brien said: "Our local authorities are the leaders in making sustainability at a community level a reality. Through the Community Climate Action Programme, hundreds of projects across communities have been and will be funded with the support of over €50 million from the Climate Action Fund from 2023 to 2027. I'm delighted now to announce, in addition, the launch of a new €30 million Just Transition scheme investing further in the Midlands, and to increased climate funding for local authorities in 2026 of almost €5 million. This funding demonstrates our commitment to local authorities and communities, supporting them to deliver the meaningful, place-based climate action required for their specific needs." A major new European initiative, Photonics for Quantum (P4Q), will launch in 2026 across twelve countries, marking a decisive step in Europe's effort to accelerate quantum technology development and manufacturing. In Ireland, P4Q is hosted at Tyndall National Institute (based at University College Cork), and is co-funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Skills (DFHERIS), reflecting the strategic national priority to build sovereign capability in advanced semiconductors and quantum technologies. Coordinated by the University of Twente (NL), P4Q brings together Europe's leading research institutes, semiconductor foundries, and deep-tech companies. The consortium's mission is to create the manufacturing ecosystem Europe needs to produce high-quality quantum photonic chips at scale, a critical capability as the global race for quantum accelerates. Photonic chips are a key quantum technology, enabling breakthroughs in quantum sensing, communication, and computing. The major challenge today is scale: future quantum systems will require large numbers of high-quality photonic chips, produced reliably and in high volumes. Ireland's Contribution to Advanced Quantum Packaging, Supported by DFHERIS As a key partner in P4Q, Tyndall will contribute its specialist expertise in advanced packaging of quantum photonic chips, a critical component in the development of scalable quantum systems. Tyndall's work will focus on one of the major challenges in quantum technology: packaging chips designed to operate at ultralow (cryogenic) temperatures. These processes must deliver extreme precision and performance, while also being scalable for high-volume production as quantum markets emerge. Ireland's transition to electrified mobility continues to strengthen, with two in five Irish consumers (40%) planning to purchase an electric vehicle (EV) in the next 24 months, according to new research from EY's Mobility Consumer Index (MCI). The findings, which are based on over 500 Irish respondents in the global survey of 32 countries, reveal that environmental concerns (37%), lower running costs (31%), increased EV range (30%) and high fuel prices (27%) are the primary drivers behind Irish consumers' growing interest in electrification. However, barriers still persist, with more than one-third (36%) citing uncertainty around charging and running costs as a deterrent, while 31% point to a lack of charging infrastructure in their area. The research comes at a time when Ireland's private car market is undergoing significant change. Recent CSO figures show that in 2025, electric and hybrid vehicles represented 57% of new registrations, an increase of 11 percentage points from 2024. The higher proportion of EVs in actual registrations compared to consumer intent may reflect several factors, including the influence of incentives and market conditions at the point of purchase that may shift consumer decisions beyond initial intentions. Commenting on Ireland's evolving automotive market, Julia Ann Corkery, EY Ireland Transport Leader, said: "What we're seeing in the Irish market is sustained and growing demand for electrified vehicles, with 40 per cent of prospective buyers indicating an intention to choose an electrified option. Building on last year's rebound in EV sales, the findings highlight strong consumer motivations around sustainability, lower running costs and improved vehicle performance, which continue to underpin Ireland's transition to cleaner mobility. "Alongside these factors, broader market trends are also contributing to interest in EVs, including the increasing availability of more competitively priced EV models. We have seen clear movement across Europe toward lower-cost options entering the market, which is helping to make electrified vehicles more accessible. "While consumers still have practical questions around charging and overall running costs, a lot of which relates to their specific housing circumstances and associated off-street parking, or not, these are typical considerations in any maturing market. Ongoing investment across the public, private and local authority landscape in Ireland is helping to build confidence, and as infrastructure and technology continue to progress, the fundamentals for EV adoption in Ireland remain very solid." Car buying preferences align with market reality Among the 40% of Irish respondents planning to purchase an electrified vehicle, preferences closely mirror current market composition: — 15% intend to buy a full hybrid — 15% plan to purchase a battery electric vehicle (BEV) — 10% are considering a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Meanwhile, 51% of prospective car buyers still plan to purchase an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle, with the remainder undecided. This underlines that despite the momentum towards electrification, there is still some way to go in the transition.
