Millions of private gun owners are living in fear that they will be disarmed and left defenceless by legislation in the making. In this interview with BizNews, Jonathan Deal, the founder of Safe Citizen, tells Chris Steyn that the proposed legislation would be “unenforceable” - and warns that it “would invite public disobedience on a large scale”. Deal says the proposed amendments amount to “saying self-defense is not a valid reason to possess a firearm”. Commenting on the possible agenda behind the amendments, Deal charges: “They want to have every single private person, including the security industry, hobbled and disarmed as much as possible so that they can basically do what they like. We all know in history that a disarmed populace is at the complete and utter mercy of the government.” He further warns that “they will turn millions of currently law-abiding South Africans into criminals….There are millions of South Africans who are more scared of being murdered by criminals than they are scared of what the police will do to them - even if the police have the will and the resources to enforce such a ridiculous notion.”

SEAI publishes Mid-Year Review on Energy and Emission Data for 2025

Irish Tech News Audio Articles

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 23, 2025 5:07

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) has published its latest set of energy and related emission figures up to the first half of 2025. This provisional data indicates that the residential sector is likely to stay within the first carbon budget allocation, but the key energy sectors of transport and electricity will likely exceed their allocations this year. Achieving our climate targets will mean healthier, more comfortable homes, more competitive businesses and more affordable, secure energy for all. Faster technology change and ensuring we are efficient and strategic in how we use energy will be crucial. This provisional data helps us see if we're on track. Commenting on the data, Margie McCarthy, SEAI's Director of Research and Policy Insights, said: "We've made progress over the last 5 years, including the blending of biofuels for our road vehicles, scaling up of solar farms and wind generation, home energy upgrades, and EV roll-out, but these figures highlight that we need to do a lot more, and fast, to reach our targets." This latest data shows that, barring an extended cold snap at the end of 2025, emissions from the residential sector are likely to remain within their sectoral ceiling in the first carbon budget. Residential demand for both natural gas and heating kerosene was lower in the first half of 2025, compared to the same period last year, driven by a combination of warmer weather, higher energy prices and household retrofits. Future progress on residential emissions in the second carbon budget (2026-2030) will be further boosted by the Government's recent allocation of a further €568 million towards energy efficiency measures in Budget 2026. Demand for road diesel in the first half of 2025 was 3.2% lower compared to the same period last year. The record levels of biofuel blending at garage forecourts and a record number of electric vehicles on our roads have positively impacted transport sector emissions. SEAI's data shows that transport emissions in the first half of 2025 were 2.0% lower than the same period last year. However, despite this welcome reduction, SEAI's analysis indicates that Ireland exceeded its transport emission allocation for the first carbon budget earlier this year. Since September 2025, Ireland's transport sector has effectively been emitting against its future allocations in the second carbon budget, which is meant to cover the 2026-2030 period. Despite a 2.8% increase in electricity demand, SEAI's data shows that Ireland's electricity sector emissions in the first half of 2025 were largely unchanged from the same period last year. Increased demand was largely met through greater use of imported electricity via international interconnectors. SEAI's best estimate is that Ireland's electricity emission allocation for the first carbon budget could be exceeded sometime in November 2025. Renewable generation in the first half of 2025 has not increased significantly, compared to the same period last year. Commenting on the data, Margie McCarthy, SEAI's Director of Research and Policy Insights, said: "As we near the end of our first national carbon budget, this data provides timely updates on Ireland's energy and related emissions. "Taking stock of what's been achieved and where we have lagged at the end of this first carbon budget should be a decisive moment for both our economy and climate. If we achieve net demand reductions and deploy clean energy faster, then Ireland can build an energy system that's secure, affordable, and healthier for everyone, and gives us a chance to meet our climate obligations." "While Ireland's energy transition presents short-term challenges, its long-term benefits will be enormous. From warmer homes and more energy-efficient businesses to a more resilient and future-proof economy. We simply cannot afford not to act. Either as individuals or as a society", Margie McCarthy concluded. SEAI's mid-year Review for the first half of 2025 can be viewed he...

Equally fascinating is how he managed to design experiments to confirm and prove it all! Hope you enjoy as much as I do! Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie is today celebrating two historic by-election wins. In this edition of the Electoral Roadshow, Elections Analyst Wayne Sussman tells Chris Steyn: “It is absolutely historic that the Patriotic Alliance have won a ward in Soweto and they did it by totally eviscerating the Democratic Alliance and the ANC and all other parties." The PA is also celebrating a historic win in the Overberg. “So you continue to see the PA make inroads in different parts of the Western Cape.” Commenting on McKenzie's leadership style, Sussens says: ….similar to Donald Trump, Gayton McKenzie knows where the camera is and he knows how to be the centre of attention. It is a great political skill….This is a person who isn't politically correct. He calls a spade a spade and he uses leverage against the ANC in the GNU…This is a politician whose party stock is clearly continuing to rise..” Another party celebrating this morning is ActionSA. “ActionSA made history by winning their first ever ward in the Northwest and their first ever by-election…Unbelievable result.” As for the possible impact of the merger between both BOSA, GOOD, and Rise Mzansi, Sussman says if they run good mayoral campaigns, "maybe they can be kingmakers in some metros".

Beyond The Outer Realm welcomes back Luke Eastwood from Ireland Date: October 14th, 2025 EP: 627 TOPIC: Luke will be discussing his book " Samhain- The Roots of Halloween" About The Book: A full history of the festival of Halloween ‘An excellent and comprehensive exploration of this fascinating subject.' - Philip Carr-Gomm, author Druid Mysteries ‘Samhain was the entry point into winter, a time of hardship, cold and hunger … It was also a time of introspection, of communing with the dead and the otherworld – themes that have somehow survived, albeit distorted, into the modern era.' The modern celebration of Halloween is derived from the ancient festival of the dead known in Ireland as Samhain. It is from Ireland that we have inherited most of our Halloween traditions, mainly through the diaspora. Delving into the ancient past, this book uncovers the history of this festival in Britain, Ireland and Brittany, including the forgotten goddess Tlachtga and the sacred temple of the Druids in Co. Meath, where the first Halloween fires were lit. Thank you all !! About Luke: I have been involved in the arts in some shape or form since I was a teenager. I was born in Aberdeen, Scotland but spent most of my childhood and all my teenage years in Kent and Surrey, England. At 19 I moved to London to study at university and this was the beginning of my development into a semi-professional or professional artist, designer, musician, photographer and writer. In 1990, at university, I discovered the Apple MacIntosh computer which I immediately fell in love with, leading to my interest in digital art and Graphic Design (which became my career), following a stint in Mitre House Publishing for my degree industrial placement and writing for the university magazine Cityscape. I began writing poetry at the age of 15, pretty badly I might add. Over time I developed my own style of both poetry and prose. My first article was published in 1991 but a year after leaving university I left journalism aside for other activities (mainly music) until the early 2000s when I began to write more frequently. For most of the 1990s I concentrated on my band Children Of Dub and released several albums and singles during that time. A multitude of my articles in magazines and websites have been appearing in recent years, which you can find on my articles page. In 2005 my first book, on spiritual wisdom, "The Journey" was published under the pseudonym Joseph Dawton. In 2006 I was editor of a collection of poetry entitled "Where The Hazel Falls", featuring some of my poems, as well as eight other authors in Ireland. My first book to be published without the use of a pseudonym was "The Druid's Primer" in 2012, which is a non-fiction book on Druidry. A revised and expanded edition of "The Journey", was published in UK and USA by Moon Books, in late 2012. My first solo collection of poetry "Through The Cracks In The Concrete The Wilderness Grows" was published in 2016 through Killkenny Druidry College Press and "Kerry Folk Tales" (with Gary Branigan) was published in summer 2019 through The History Press. "How To Save The Planet" was published by Electric Publications in November 2019. "5th Element" by Children Of Dub was released on CD in March 2020, followed by a 2xCD best-of compilation "Evolution 1993-2020".

The Outer Realm welcomes back Brian Baker from Superstitious Times Date: October 8th, 2025 EP: 625 TOPIC: Brian returns and will talking about his new book “Eerie Whispers” - Exploring Canada's Reluctant Relationship With It's Ghostly Lore! Contact for the show - theouterrealmcontact@gmail.com Michelle Desrochers and The Outer Realm :https://linktr.ee/michelledesrochers_ Please support us by Liking, Subscribing, Sharing and Commenting. Thank you all !! About Brian: Brian Baker is a Toronto-based journalist captivated by pop culture and the paranormal. His journey began at age 4. While living in British Columbia, he encountered a shadowy apparition that sparked a lifelong fascination with the supernatural. This passion eventually led him to launch The Superstitious Times in April 2018, a news site dedicated to Canada's strange and unexplainable tales, and write his first book, Eerie Whispers: Canada's Reluctant Relationship with its Ghostly Lore. Before diving into journalism, Brian studied archaeology at the University of Toronto, driven by a lifelong curiosity for ancient civilizations and the mysteries therein. He grew up immersed in paranormal lore, a passion he now shares with his family, including his wife, two children and their ever-watchful cat. With two decades of work with publications like the Town Crier, the Canadian Press, Torstar Digital, the Globe and Mail, Sun Media, Urban Male Magazine and Chrome Magazine, Brian is all about capturing the unique and quirky in his articles. Oh, and he loves puffins. About The Book: Canada's paranormal roots run deep. We tell ghost stories around flickering campfires and share unexplained encounters with family and friends. Yet our polite, risk-averse nation often buries these experiences, rarely encouraging them in the places we live or in our arts and entertainment. Fear of stigma and discomfort with the unknown — especially death — keep the supernatural in the shadows. We allow only flirtations with ghosts, ghouls, and goblins, mostly at Halloween. Eerie Whispers explores Canada's haunted history, drawing from the diverse folklore of its immigrant communities and the traditional stories of Indigenous Peoples. It asks why Canadians, unlike Americans or the British, are reluctant to celebrate this part of our culture. Brian Baker encourages us to embrace the uncanny and find the courage needed to amplify our nation's supernatural voice. Beyond The Outer Realm welcomes back Maxim W. Furek Date: September 30th, 2025 EP: 621 TOPIC: Maxim joins me today to talk about his book " Paranormal Apocalypse" . - Book Overview - - What if our obsession with the end times reveals something extraordinary about human nature? From a forgotten 1969 song that predicted our technological nightmare to the mysterious drone swarms of 2024, something dark threads through human consciousness—an inexplicable attraction to our own destruction. The Secret Psychology of Doomsday Why did a simple folk song about the year 2525 become a massive hit during the Summer of Love? What drives ordinary people to abandon everything and follow apocalyptic cult leaders? And why can't we look away when the world seems to be ending? Author Maxim W. Furek has uncovered a hidden pattern—a psychological phenomenon he calls "Apocalyptic Awe" that explains everything from ancient prophecies to modern conspiracy theories, from Hollywood blockbusters to political movements. The Questions That Will Haunt You: What did H.P. Lovecraft see coming that we're only now discovering? Why do the same apocalyptic fears resurface generation after generation, just wearing different masks? How are online "rabbit holes" weaponizing humanity's oldest anxieties? What connects the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse to your social media feed? The Dark Discovery Through shocking case studies—from Jonestown to January 6th, from nuclear panic to AI anxiety—Furek reveals how apocalyptic thinking isn't just shaping our entertainment and politics. Microsoft's Work Trend Index reveals a record 38% moved roles this year

New insights from Microsoft Ireland reveal Ireland's workforce is navigating a period of transformation. The Microsoft Ireland Work Trend Index 2025 is based on a nationally representative survey of 1,000 Irish workers, conducted annually as part of a general population study, ensuring a demographic balance year-on-year. The results show that AI is emerging as a career catalyst, while job turnover hits a record? 38%, according to the respondents who took part in the survey,?while workplace satisfaction trends marginally downward. With AI adoption up 27% year-on-year, 41% of workers say it helps them work smarter. Half (50%) believe AI skills are critically important to remain competitive in the job market, while 54% say having these skills will broaden their job opportunities. Additionally, 40% believe knowing how to use AI at work will help them get promoted faster, and 34% say AI has made them consider other career paths. Yet, this optimism is tempered by uneven access and training gaps, with over half of workers calling for structured or employer-led AI training to help speed adoption. A Workforce in Flux and Under Pressure - Employees call for Balance Despite 57% of workers seeing opportunities for growth within their current roles, Ireland's labour market is in motion. Based on the survey results, turnover has surged from 19% in 2023 to 38% in 2025, positioning Ireland as a market with significant talent volatility. This churn underscores the importance of investing in retention strategies that empower employees to thrive by supporting their well-being, balance, and growth, which in turn help organisations to remain resilient in a rapidly changing workplace. Ireland's workforce trends align with global insights that highlight how emotional strains are compounded by the realities of today's workday, where digital overload and constant interruptions challenge even the most flexible environments. Linking this workforce feedback to Microsoft's global telemetry, a picture emerges showing the modern workday is increasingly distracted. Workers are interrupted every two minutes or 275 times per day, receive 117 emails daily, and spend 57% of meetings in unscheduled sessions. AI Eases Employee Strain - But Wider Access and Training is Required AI offers a practical remedy, helping employees manage their workload, reduce stress, and focus on higher-value tasks. It is increasingly seen as a solution to workplace pressure, with 91% of users in Ireland saying it improves the quality of their work. Additionally, 34% of workers say AI has made them reconsider their career path, highlighting its influence on professional ambition and future career opportunities. However, AI use remains uneven: · Board-level executives: 91% use AI at work · Non-managers: Only 39% use AI at work (versus 66% of managers) · Gender imbalance: 63% of men versus 47% of women use AI at work · Generational usage: 55% of Gen Z (18-24) use AI at work, compared with 62% of younger millennials (25-34), 59% of older millennials (35-44), 47% of Gen X (45-54), and 48% of Boomers (55-64). These disparities raise concerns about who has access to AI tools and benefits from them, and who risks being left behind. Lower engagement with AI could limit opportunities for efficiency and relief from routine tasks, potentially exacerbating stress levels for employees under pressure. It's perhaps no surprise, therefore, that over half (61%) of Irish workers are calling for structured AI training, saying their employer could support adoption by offering more training either in-house or through external providers, and 47% believe they should be given more time to research AI independently. Commenting on the alignment between Irish trends and the broader global perspective, Microsoft Ireland General Manager, Catherine Doyle said: "Ireland is at a turning point. As AI transforms the world of work, Irish employees and employers are navigating rapid change and new opportunities. The me...

Ahead of the historic Steelers Vs. Vikings NFL game this Sunday (28th September) in Dublin, the Irish government's trade and innovation agency, Enterprise Ireland has launched a report, powered by PItchBook data on Ireland's sports tech sector. The report points to Ireland's robust domestic sports tech sector, home to 93 VC-backed sports tech companies, including 40 homegrown global innovators. These companies include Orreco, Kitman Labs and Output Sports, who joined Enterprise Ireland for the launch of the report. All three companies are working with NFL teams and many other global sporting brands, including NBA, NHL, PGA Tour, F1, Olympians, Premier League and Premiership Rugby. Orreco the global leader in bio-analytics solutions for professional athletes, also announced today that they are supporting the Harvard Football Players Health Study, funded by the NFL and NFLPA. The study leads efforts to develop and support innovative research that has the potential to impact the health of current, former, and future NFL players. Examining the VC level of activity in Irish sports tech, the report, powered by PitchBook data reports that Ireland's sports tech ecosystem has notably defied the recent downward trend in VC activity seen in other regions since 2022. Irish sports tech VC deal count grew by more than 50% in 2023, compared with a drop of more than 30% for Europe overall in the same period. In 2024, Ireland's deal count grew an additional 47.1%, while broader European deal count declined again by 15.5%. Since 2014, Irish sports tech start-ups have collectively raised over €224 million in VC funding across 181 transactions. Notable VC funding rounds include Kitman Labs (€71.1 million raised) and Xtremepush (€18.6 million) and Output Sports with €4.5 million raised in 2025. Year to date 2025 data show that Ireland ranks seventh in Europe for total sports tech VC deal count, despite its relatively small population. On a per-capita basis, this ranking rises to first, and Ireland has maintained a top four ranking nearly every year over the past decade. Enterprise Ireland has emerged as a central force in shaping the sports tech investment landscape, not only in Ireland but across Europe. Since 2024, it has led the region in deal activity with 19 sports tech investments - more than triple the number recorded by the next most active investors. Commenting on the report, Keith Brock, Enterprise Ireland's Senior Client Advisor for Enterprise Solutions, said: "The Irish sports tech industry has expanded rapidly over the past ten years, both in terms of the number of companies, but also in the level of investment they have attracted and the impact they are achieving internationally working with global sports leagues. Across Enterprise Ireland's portfolio of sports tech companies, there are 89 active or pending patents covering wearable devices, augmented reality, diagnostic, exercise equipment and equine health. This level of patents points to the strong level of R&D and innovation happening in the sector, which in turn is accelerating the international sports industry from athlete performance to fan engagement. "We are proud of Enterprise Ireland's role in supporting the Irish sports tech industry, leading sports tech investment not only in Ireland, but in Europe, with 19 sports tech investment since 2024 alone. However, while Enterprise Ireland has been backing the Irish sports tech industry, the industry has also attracted major global VC investment including from Octopus Ventures (UK), Partech (France) and Apex Capital (Portugal)." Irish companies working with NFL Teams: Kitman: Kitman Labs' Intelligence Platform (iP) is an advanced operating system for performance, health, and talent development, unifying data across medical, performance, coaching, and operational domains to deliver AI-driven, evidence-based insights. iP enables leagues, federations, and elite organisations to connect data, streamline workflows, and optimise ath...

He is a regular guest on the Where Did the Road Go? podcast and maintains an online presence at JoshuaCutchin.com About The Book ( borrowed from Amazon) Few of us ever expect to encounter flying saucers, monsters, or ghosts in our lifetime. Yet those who do inevitably face an unsettling realization: that reality is far stranger than we've been led to believe. As shocking as these revelations might seem, they pale in comparison to an even more controversial phenomenon lurking in the shadows: encounters with fictional characters made real. Over the centuries, countless individuals have reported coming face-to-face with characters and creatures seemingly ripped from our collective imagination—everything from literary heroes to mythical beasts, even comic book superheroes. What at first seems like a rarity soon reveals itself as a pervasive aspect of the paranormal writ large. UFOs mimic elements of pulp depictions. Cryptids emerge from folklore and fiction. Urban legends materialize as authentic ghostly phenomena. Evidence abounds for those willing to listen with open minds… and confront the impossible. In Fourth Wall Phantoms, acclaimed paranormal author Joshua Cutchin dares to explore one of the few remaining taboos of High Strangeness: the permeable “fourth wall” separating fiction from reality. Through a mixture of both celebrated cases and rare or never-before-published accounts, Cutchin invites readers to venture beyond the page in a search for truth in the unlikeliest of places: the crossroads of the paranormal, the imaginary, and the real. “The story in which fiction becomes fact saved Joshua Cutchin's life. It can save yours, too. That's because it is you. This was once called ‘myth,' by which our intellectual ancestors did not mean untruth but something like, ‘This is really weird.' I laughed a lot reading this book, giggling in recognition and realization. This is really weird, even more so because it is so.” - Dr. Jeffrey J. Azets Ireland has unveiled new data which reveals that 60% of Irish businesses are using AI in some form as part of everyday operations. AI adoption grows among Irish firms The survey of 119 firms across Ireland in May 2025 reveals how Irish SMEs are using technology to future-proof their operations amid the accelerating digital transformation. Findings reveal growing rates of adoption of AI tools and technology, with the number of organisations using AI across their organisation every day rising by 11% since last November. Despite growing levels of adoption, a significant proportion of firms remain at an early stage on their AI journey. 21% of firms have not yet integrated AI in their business, while 19% of firms are researching the technology but have yet to implement it within operations. Only 1% of firms consider themselves to be at the forefront of AI adoption and innovation in their sector. Smaller firms lagging behind There are also signs of a correlation between company size and adoption, with smaller companies struggling to keep pace with larger counterparts. 71% of micro businesses (10 employees or less) have yet to adopt AI within operations, compared to only 12% of large organisations. The Finance sector has the highest level of AI adoption, with 76% of organisations having implemented AI in some capacity. This compares to 54% of firms in the construction sector and 53% of firms in the retail sector. Cybersecurity tops business priorities Findings show that cybersecurity is the top business priority for firms in Ireland, amid the rapidly evolving AI landscape. Data on key growth indicators show that firms expect to significantly strengthen cybersecurity over the next 12 months, scoring a projected change in capabilities at 6.7 out of 10. Digitalisation and future turnover follow at 6.4 out of 10, indicating an elevated focus on growth and technology investment. Irish firms experience a lower level of cybersecurity incidents across Northern Europe The results show that Irish organisations experienced the lowest level of cybersecurity incidents (30%) across the six northern European countries surveyed. This compares to an average of 38% across the UK, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Only 8% of Irish firms reported multiple cyber incidents across the year, demonstrating a high level of cyber resilience across the Irish business community. The construction sector experienced the highest average rate of cyber incidents, with 45% reporting at least one incident over the past 12 months. This is followed by the finance sector, with 43% of surveyed firms reporting a minimum of one incident. More than 1 in 3 (37%) medium-sized businesses reported a cyber incident over the past 12 months. Commenting on the findings, Neil Hughes, CEO of Azets Ireland, said: "In an era of heightened economic and trade volatility, business leaders need to navigate their organisation through short-term turbulence while planning effectively for the future. "Many SMEs in sectors such as hospitality, retail, and other family-owned businesses are under pressure as a result of the rising cost of business and need greater support if they are to grow and thrive into the future. Reducing the cost and regulatory burden on these businesses must be a priority in the months ahead. "Despite these challenges, our findings show that leaders are taking decisive steps to future-proof their organisation and drive growth from harnessing the power of AI to strengthening cybersecurity. It's clear that leaders increasingly recognise the potential of AI to enhance productivity and efficiency across their organisation and are embracing the technology in their business. "Not every business has the resources to keep pace with the rapid pace of innovation. Our findings show that small, owner-managed businesses in particular are struggling to advance innovation and embrace AI tools and technology. With a growing skills gap at many of these firms, it's crucial that d...

Leading hiring platform IrishJobs has today published new data, revealing that nearly 8 in 10 employers in Ireland are using AI in the hiring process. Recruiters report that AI tools are helping to enhance productivity and enabling more efficient hiring. The IrishJobs Hiring Efficiency survey gathered insights from 475 recruiters and 824 job seekers in Ireland to identify changing attitudes and actions on hiring processes in a fast-evolving labour market. Findings from the survey reveal that 78% of recruiters in Ireland are using AI at some point in their recruitment process to enhance productivity. Adoption of AI among recruiters has increased by 50 percentage points over the past 12 months. 28% of employers reported using the technology in recruitment in August 2024, according to previous research by IrishJobs. Recruiters in Germany, the UK, and Austria also took part in the research, with results indicating that Irish recruiters are following a similar trajectory to international HR professionals regarding the adoption of AI. Over half of employers in Germany (60%) use AI in their hiring processes, while 77% of recruiters in the UK report using the technology to boost productivity and efficiency. In Austria, more than two-thirds of recruiters (66%) reported leveraging AI to support recruitment activities. Impact of AI 52% of recruiters in Ireland report that manual administrative tasks take up too much time in their everyday role and slow down the hiring process. The use of AI tools and technology is having a direct impact on reducing the time spent on these tasks and streamlining the hiring process. Writing and publishing job adverts (28%) is the top way in which recruiters are using AI to automate the recruitment process and enhance productivity. Reviewing job applications and CVs (23%) is the second most frequent use of AI among recruiters. This is followed by preparing and sending offer/contract documents (17%). 13% of employers are using AI technology to conduct interviews. Despite the rapid growth in AI adoption, a sizable minority of recruiters remain uncertain about the adoption and implementation of the technology in operations. 19% of recruiters reported that their current IT systems do not support integration of AI tools. Candidate dissatisfaction with recruitment processes The survey reveals several factors that are affecting hiring success, including the length of recruitment processes and the number of stakeholders involved. 23% of job candidates report that there are too many steps involved in the hiring process and drop out before it is complete. Overall, more than 1 in 4 job candidates who apply for a role do not complete the hiring process. Many employers are considering reducing the number of interviews in response to candidate dissatisfaction, with 36% of HR leaders admitting there are now too many interviews in the hiring process. A further 44% of employers call out the need for quicker internal processes, saying it takes too long to receive feedback from hiring managers. Commenting on the findings, Christopher Paye, Country Director of The Stepstone Group Ireland with responsibility for IrishJobs, said: "The Irish economy is set to face a new period of elevated economic uncertainty over the coming months, prompted by the introduction of international trade tariffs. However, despite this heightened volatility, the outlook for the labour market remains positive, with Davy recently forecasting that the workforce will grow by 2-3 per cent in 2025, while recent data from the CSO reported that the number of people employed in the state has risen above 2.8 million for the first time. This resilience will mean that many employers in Ireland continue to navigate a highly competitive market for talent and face skills shortages across various sectors. The IrishJobs Hiring Efficiency survey provides a timely insight into the opportunities and challenges facing recruiters in this evolving environment. It's clear...

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
The Obligation to Recite 100 Berachot Each Day: Introduction

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

The Gemara in Masechet Menahot (43) cites a verse in the Book of Debarim (10:12) in which Moshe Rabbenu turns to Beneh Yisrael and says, "Ma Hashem Elokecha Sho'el Me'imach" – "What does Hashem your G-d ask of you?" Moshe proceeds to explain that Hashem asks that we fear Him and obey His commands. The Gemara, however, comments that the word "Ma" in this verse may be read as "Me'a" – one hundred. This means that we are required to recite 100 Berachot each day, and this is what Hashem wants from us. It seems from the Gemara that source of this obligation is the word "Ma," which is read as though it is written "Me'a." Some commentators, however, understood the Gemara's inference from this verse differently. The Shiboleh Ha'leket (Rav Sidkiya Ben Abraham Ha'rofeh, Italy, 13 th century) noted that this verse contains 100 letters, and thus the Sages found in this verse an allusion to the requirement of 100 daily blessings. In truth, this verse contains only 99 letters, but since the Gemara reads the word "Ma" as "Me'a," which contains an additional letter (an Alef), the total reaches 100. Others explain that this inference is based on the "Atbash" system, whereby a letter can be substituted with its corresponding letter at the opposite end of the alphabet (e.g. Alef is replaced by Tav; Bet is replaced by Shin, Gimmel is replaced by Resh, etc.). In the system of "Atbash," the letters that form the word "Ma" – Mem and Heh – become Yud and Sadi, which have the combined numerical value of 100, alluding to the 100 daily Berachot. Another allusion to this requirement is found in the verse in Tehillim (128:4), "Hineh Ki Chen Yeborach Gaber Yereh Hashem" ("Behold, this is how a G-d-fearing man shall be blessed"). The word "Ki" in Gematria equals 30, and the word "Chen" equals 70, for a total of 100, such that the phrase "Ki Chen Yeborach Gaber" may be read to mean that a man should recite 100 Berachot. As the Gemara inferred this requirement from a verse in the Torah, we might conclude that this constitutes a Biblical obligation, mandated by the Torah. This is, in fact, the view taken by the Ba'al Halachot Gedolot, in his listing of the 613 Misvot. Rav Shlomo Ibn Gabirol, in his "Azharot" poem which lists the 613 Biblical commands following the view of the Behag (and which we customarily chant on Shabuot), makes reference to this requirement ("U'mi'berachot Tasmid Me'at Ha'nigmarim"). By contrast, the Rambam maintained that this obligation was enacted later, by the Sages. The Sefer Ha'yere'im (Rav Eliezer of Metz, France, 1140-1237) similarly maintained that this requirement was instituted by the Ansheh Kenesset Ha'gedola ("Men of the Great Assembly") at the beginning of the Second Commonwealth. According to this view, the inference from the verse in Debarim is meant as an allusion to a law enacted by the Sages, and is not the actual source of this requirement. A third opinion is that of the Shiboleh Ha'leket and others, who maintained that this obligation was verbally transmitted as a "Halacha Le'Moshe Mi'Sinai" – a law taught to Moshe at Sinai, without having been written in the Torah. At first glance, we might question the view of the Behag and Shiboleh Ha'leket based on the Midrash's comment that it was King David who instituted the recitation of 100 Berachot each day. The Midrash relates that a devastating plague ravaged the nation during the reign of King David, killing 100 people every day. David determined that to end the plague, everyone must recite 100 daily blessings. (David later refers to himself as "Hukam Al" (Shemuel II 23:1), which could be read to mean, "the one who established 'Al,' as the word "Al" in Gematria equals 100, an allusion to the 100 Berachot which David instituted.) Seemingly, if this constitutes a Biblical obligation, or a requirement transmitted orally since the time of Moshe Rabbenu, then there would be no need for David to introduce this law. The answer, it would seem, is that the people were lax in their fulfillment of this obligation, and so David ordered the people to be more scrupulous in this regard and ensure to recite 100 blessings every day. A fascinating theory regarding the origins of this obligation was advanced by Rav Aharon Amarillo (1700-1772), in his work Peneh Aharon. He writes that Moshe Rabbenu instituted the requirement to recite 100 Berachot each day at the time of the construction of the Mishkan. The wooden planks that formed the structure of the Mishkan were inserted into "Adanim" – sockets embedded in the ground. In all, there were one hundred sockets, which together formed the base and foundation of the Mishkan. The word "Me'a," Rav Amarillo writes, is an acrostic representing the words "Me'at Adneh Ha'Mishkan" – "the one hundred sockets of the Mishkan." The 100 daily blessings were instituted to correspond to the 100 sockets of the Mishkan. The question naturally arises, what connection is there between the "Adanim" and Berachot? Why are the 100 daily blessings associated with the sockets that formed the base of the Mishkan? We can perhaps answer this question based a discussion by Rav Yosef Salant (Jerusalem, 1885-1981), in his Be'er Yosef, regarding the symbolism of the "Adanim." He writes that the Mishkan itself represents the Misvot that the Torah commands us to observe, and the sockets represent the foundation of it all, the pillar upon which the entire Torah rests. And that pillar, Rav Salant explains, is Emuna – faith in Hashem. Our faith in Hashem as the Creator who governs and controls everything is the foundation upon which all of Torah is based. If so, then we can perhaps understand the association between the "Adanim" and the Berachot that we recite. Numerous times each day, we are required to take a few moments and recite a Beracha, with Kavana (concentration), reminding ourselves of Hashem's involvement in the world and in our lives. Indeed, the word "Beracha" in Gematria equals 227 – the same Gematria as the word "Zecher" – "remembrance." The purpose of Berachot is to remind us of Hashem's existence and control over the world. And, in fact, the verse from which the Gemara derived this obligation tells us that what Hashem asks is "Le'yir'a Et Hashem Elokecha" – that we "fear" Hashem, meaning, that we live with an awareness of His unlimited power and His greatness. Accordingly, the 100 Berachot we recite each day are truly the ''foundation" of Torah life, as they serve to reinforce our Emuna. For good reason, then, the Berachot we recite are associated with the "Adanim," which comprised the foundation of the Mishkan and thus symbolize faith, the foundation of the entire Torah. A number of sources speak of the great reward which one earns through the proper fulfillment of this obligation – reciting 100 Berachot each day with concentration, and pronouncing each word correctly. (For example, one must ensure that the words "Baruch Ata" do not sound like "Baru Chata," and to recite "Melech Ha'olam," and not "Melecholam," skipping the syllable "Ha-.") The Ba'al Ha'Turim (Rabbenu Yaakob Ben Asher, 1270-1340) writes that those who fulfill this Misva are rewarded with long life. Commenting on the verse, "And you who cling to Hashem your G-d, you are all alive today" (Debarim 4:4), the Ba'al Ha'Turim observes the custom followed in some communities to add a crown in the Torah scroll above the letter Kof in the word "Ha'debekim" ("who are attached") in this verse. This crown, he explains, emphasizes that we attach ourselves to Hashem through the 100 blessings we recite each day – as the letter Kof in Gematria equals 100, and the reward for reciting these Berachot is "Haim Kulechem Hayom" – long life. The Seder Ha'yom (Rav Moshe Ben Machir, Safed, 16 th century) adds that when one recites a Beracha properly, the Beracha ascends to G-d in the heavens, and He takes the Beracha and embeds it into His "crown." Hashem's "crown," as it were, is made from the Berachot which we recite properly with Kavana. Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (Jerusalem, 1910-1995) would advise people experiencing hardship to devote themselves to the meticulous observance of this Misva, and try to recite 100 Berachot each day with proper attention and concentration. The verse from which the Gemara inferred this obligation begins with the letter Vav ("Ve'ata Yisrael") and ends with the letter Chaf ("Nafeshecha"), and these letters have the combined numerical value of 26 – the Gematria of the divine Name of "Havaya." The Hida (Rav Haim Yosef David Azulai, 1724-1806) thus writes that the fulfillment of this Misva saves a person from the dreadful punishments described in the section of the "Kelalot" ("curses") in Parashat Ki-Tabo, a section in which the Name "Havaya" appears 26 times. Moreover, this section contains 98 curses, and also includes a warning about "every ailment and every punishment which is not mentioned in this book" (Debarim 28:61) – adding another two curses, for a total of 100. We protect against these 100 curses through the recitation of 100 Berachot each day. Additionally, the Zohar Hadash teaches that we remain in exile because of our failure to properly observe this requirement to recite 100 Berachot each day. It emerges, then, that our commitment to properly fulfill this obligation helps end our long, bitter exile and bring our final redemption. The Arizal taught that the 100 daily Berachot allow us to harness the power of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet – the letters that Hashem used to create the world. The 100 daily blessings are, according to Kabbalistic teaching, associated with the 22 letters, and we thus benefit from the spiritual force of these letters by properly reciting 100 Berachot every day. The Gemara in Masechet Menahot (43b) tells that Rabbi Hiyya went out of his way to purchase special foods for Shabbat and Yom Tob in order to ensure he would recite 100 Berachot. On Shabbat and Yom Tob, the Amida prayer contains far fewer blessings than the weekday Amida prayer, making it more challenging to reach a total of 100 Berachot. Rabbi Hiyya thus made a point of having additional foods on Shabbat and Yom Tob so he would have more Berachot to recite. The Hida, in his work Mahazik Beracha (290), noted the Gemara's implication that this practice marked a special measure of piety on Rabbi Hiyya's part. The Gemara appears to laud Rabbi Hiyya for his piety – indicating that this was not strictly required. The Hida thus suggests that reciting 100 Berachot each day does not constitute a strict Halachic obligation, but is rather a worthwhile practice to follow. The consensus view among the Poskim, however, is that this is indeed a strict obligation. The Petah Ha'debir (Rav Haim Binyamin Pontremoli, Turkey, d. 1872) explains that Rabbi Hiyya was praised for fulfilling the Misva at the highest standard – going out of his way to buy special delicacies, rather than buying simpler foods. But ensuring to recite 100 blessings is a strict requirement, and not just a measure of piety. Hacham Ovadia Yosef adds that there are ways to reach a total of 100 Berachot without actually reciting Berachot, but Rabbi Hiyya chose not to rely on these leniencies, and instead went out to buy food so he could recite 100 blessings on Shabbat and Yom Tob. Indeed, the Shulhan Aruch explicitly rules that one is required to recite 100 Berachot each day. The Poskim indicate that 100 Berachot is a minimum amount, and not an exact amount. Hacham Ovadia notes that from the explanation mentioned earlier associating the 100 daily Berachot with the 100 sockets beneath the Mishkan, one might conclude that we must recite precisely 100 Berachot, and no more, but this is not the Halacha. One must recite at least 100 Berachot, but certainly may recite more. The Rambam, in Hilchot Tefila, brings a custom that some observed to count the Berachot that one recites over the course of the day. This was the practice of Hacham Ovadia Yosef on Shabbat, when it is more difficult to reach a total of 100 blessings, as he wanted to ensure to fulfill this obligation. It is told that the Brisker Rav (Rav Yitzchak Zev Soloveitchik, 1886-1959) would count the Berachot he recited every day, following this custom mentioned by the Rambam.
