This week on APTN News InFocus, host Cierra Bettens examines the years-long fight to search the Prairie Green landfill and the delays that kept families waiting. In December 2022, Cambria Harris stood on Parliament Hill, pleading for a search of the landfill where her mother, Morgan Harris, and others were believed to be. Despite her calls for action, it took two more years for the search to begin. APTN News senior online journalist Kathleen Martens joins us to break down the timeline and the latest developments. • • • APTN National News, our stories told our way. Two journalists, Kathleen Martens and Brandi Morin, have been closely following the ongoing crises faced by unhoused people, largely Indigenous, in so-called “tent cities”. They have been documenting the political and police action to remove the encampments. In Brandi's case, she was arrested for doing her work as a journalist, which brought the eyes of the world on her. But the story isn't about Brandi, it's about the people she has been speaking with. Editor-in-chief Karyn Pugliese sits down with Kathleen and Brandi to talk about the people they have met, their experiences, and what some of the causes of homelessness are for them.Have tent cities and homelessness become the new normal?Host: Jesse Brown Credits: Tristan Capacchione (Audio Editor and Technical Producer), Bruce Thorson (Senior Producer), Annette Ejiofor (Managing Editor), Karyn Pugliese (Editor-in-Chief)Featured guests: Kathleen Martens, Brandi MorinFurther reading: Our Relatives — APTNPolice raids rock Edmonton, as Indigenous encampment dismantled — RicochetIndigenous reporter fears more journalists will be targeted after arrest as police cleared Canada camp — The GuardianAdditional music by Audio NetworkSponsors: Communauto, Douglas, ArticleIf you value this podcast, support us! Last week, Canada asked France to extradite a Catholic priest accused of crimes against Inuit children in Nunavut decades ago. RCMP have said Rev. Johannes Rivoire is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant related to a sexual assault charge laid in February. Rivoire had previously been charged with sexually abusing children in Nunavut, but those charges were stayed in 2017. In Iqaluit on Friday, as part of the Pope's final stop in his "penitential pilgrimage" in Canada, a delegation once again called on the pontiff to personally intervene. Today, we're talking to investigative journalist Kathleen Martens about the long fight to put Rivoire on trial. This episode will also feature clips from Martens's exclusive interview with Rivoire for APTN.

For residential school survivors across Canada, the process of being compensated for physical and sexual abuse stirs up feelings of shame and pain. It's a complex process involving lawyers at every level and it’s creating anger among survivors who say its attracting people who are taking advantage of them all over again. Kathleen Martens presents IAP Investigation Follow-Up, originally aired March 9, 2012.

When kids "age out" of the foster care system, they're on their own. If the foster child has serious disabilities. Then that's it. They must live in a group home. Those are the rules a Saskatchewan foster family is fighting. Kathleen Martens presents For the Love of Matty, originally aired February 6, 2015.

Kathleen Martens knows this. She’s proved time and again that government did not fairly compensate survivors and some lawyers fleeced them. She’s broken stories, held those in power accountable, some lawyers were disbarred as a result of her exposés. Her documentary “Truth? Or Reconciliation” was another deep dive winning the 2017 Canadian Association of Journalists award in the Open Broadcast Feature category with one judge calling it a “perfect” documentary.

Kathleen Martens has done it all, from covering agricultural stories for a small-town paper in rural Manitoba to taking on the complexities of the federal bureaucracy, not to mention just about the entire legal profession. First in local print and then in long form TV investigations for a national audience and now on the APTN National News web site, there’s not much Kathleen Martens hasn’t done in the world of journalism. And by bringing a handful of national awards to APTN Investigates, the evidence is clearly there that she’s done it very well. Karyn Pugliese and Kathleen Martens discuss the Independent Assessment Process and so much more on APTN Investigates: A Retrospective.
