In recent years, politicians across the U.S. have been debating what history should be taught in the classroom. Connecticut is no exception to these debates— a 2022 press conference announcing a planned Native Studies curriculum in Connecticut's public schools turned tense when questions around the specifics of the program came up. This hour, we’re talking to historians and educators to learn what it's like to teach and study the past in all its complexity in today's polarized political climate. This panel was part of a live event hosted with The Connecticut Forum in November, less than two weeks after the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's resignation announcement halts any progress on a $48 billion proposal to reform child welfare systems on reserves. It also stalls a First Nations clean drinking water bill. Trudeau received both praise and criticism from Indigenous leaders following his resignation announcement. This week: 'Close Encounters of the Colonial Kind,' the title of a talk given by our very own Kim TallBear (University of Alberta professor of Native Studies) at “Of the Land and Water: Indigenous Sexualities, Genders and Ways of Being,” hosted earlier this year in Whitehorse, YK by the Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning. Although rooted in her by-now familiar terrains of sexuality and science, Kim's monologue was a bit of a departure from what we're used to here on the podcast: delivered in the fictionalized voice of ‘IZ,' she's the personification of an Indigenous-driven movement of ‘unapologetic intellectual promiscuity,' or what IZ herself calls “critical polydisciplinamorous engagement.” An adaptation of her 2023 Substack post / 2021 essay by the same name, Kim's keynote so aroused our curiosity we had to have her flesh out the body of thought behind it. Dr. Nicole (Nykkie) Lugosi-Schimpf is a world traveler and polyglot. She is also an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta and a qualitative scholar specializing in: International Indigeneity, BIPOC-Indigenous relations (Canada and Central Europe), nation(hood), identity, and structural racism. This week: controversy at the Congress. The National Congress of American Indians, that is. And according to its website, NCAI is “the oldest, largest, and most representative American Indian and Alaska Native organization serving the broad interests of tribal governments and communities.” A little too representative, claim critics, who allege entities are permitted if not encouraged to join the Congress as tribes with insufficient claims to being tribes. The core concern: recognition. Not just how, but by whom. A concern which came to a head last month at NCAI's 80th annual convention, when a pair of resolutions pushed to restrict full membership rights to federally-recognized tribes, thereby limiting state-recognized tribes to non-voting associate membership. But is federal recognition the be-all and end-all of what makes a tribe truly tribal? Isn't outsourcing who you are to outsiders itself oppressive? And why would the approval of a colonial country hellbent on your destruction be of help to anyone? We note that the colonization of lands and Indigenous Peoples worldwide has resulted in the placement of foreign borders upon territories Indigenous peoples have inhabited since time immemorial. The results of these impositions adversely affect the nationhood and identity of Indigenous peoples everywhere. Colonial border-policy enforcement, coupled with settler-state immigration laws, are some critical factors in eroding Indigenous Peopless customs, traditions, and national identities through displacement, restriction of traditional movement, and ongoing encroachment on Indigenous territories.Sikowis Nobiss is Plains Cree/Saulteaux of the George Gordon First Nation in Saskatchewan, Canada, and grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and is the founder and Executive Director of Great Plains Action Society. She has a Master's Degree in Religious Studies and Graduate Minor in Native Studies from the University of Iowa. In 2021, she received the Impact Through Advocacy Award from the Iowa Environmental Council. In June 2022, her dedication to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community earned GPAS the OneIowa Community Partnership Award. In March 2023, her work earned Great Plains Action Society recognition for being a women-led organization doing excellent work in the realm of sustainability from the Johnson County United Nations Association Chapter. This week, Emma Needham shares about upcoming events and an annual survey for native people across the US. Indian Country's largest survey is back for its third year. The Indigenous Futures Survey or IFS, is a multi-year Native-led research project. Its goal is to shed light on the authentic experiences, systemic challenges, and priority issues of Native peoples today. According to the organization Illuminative, the IFS 3.0 data will be shared with Tribes, organizers, and communities throughout Indian Country. The survey results will help leaders and allies better understand Native priorities ahead of the upcoming 2024 presidential election, be used for future policy creation, and more.Self-identifying indigenous people ages 18 and older can take the survey at indigenousfutures.org . This year's Indigenous Futures survey is co-led by the Illuminative and Native Organizers Alliance and available on their websites. Marie: One priority for native people in Minnesota is wild rice. Many organizations, environmental advocates, students, and community members will gather near Duluth, MN, for a special symposium to discuss Wild rice in Minnesota The event will include a tour and ceremonies for wild rice. Attendees will receive education and how to foster relationships around good stewardship of wild rice. Registration is free to Indigenous and Tribal attendees, with reduced student fees. There is also a lodging scholarship available for those in need. There is also a call for potters and artists at this event. The Manoomin-Psin Symposium runs from November 13-November 15th at Black Bear Resort and Casino. Marie: Also coming up in November is NativeRise 2023 Tickets are now on sale for NATIVERISE 2023. Guess which one the Canadian government funds way more than the other for First Nations emergencies like floods and fires? Karen Hogan knows the answer: in fact, the Auditor-General dedicated a whole chapter to it in her latest report, much like her predecessor did nine years prior. Since then, it's been the usual flood of excuses and the burning through of budgets as Canada perpetually reacts after-the-fact to disasters it arguably helped enable through its seemingly unmitigated support for oil and gas extraction. A question very much on the minds of Indigenous people in Canada these days, still digesting the exhaustive and explosive CBC News investigation into her public and private life—not least, her repeated claims to being a treaty Indian as a daughter of a Cree man from a northern First Nation in Manitoba. A man the CBC could only verify as the B.C.-born settler son of settler parents of Euro-American ancestry. Just some of the troubling discrepancies documented by an exposé that's thrown virtually everything about Turpel-Lafond's life story into question. A narrative that, ‘til now, presented her rapid rise to influence as a remarkable journey against the odds. One the CBC seems to show goes largely against the facts. Many Indian agents disallowed people to leave the reserve without a pass.Difficulty (1.09.33)Residential schools not only affected the students, but also the parents who had to live without children on their reserves. he can see how addictions could arise in such situations.Relationships (1.15.05)The most important aspect of this era is a willingness to have a relationship with Indigenous peoples, with their variety of life experiences and views. Allyship (1.21.13)As treaty partners, we all have to believe that Indigenous peoples have political rights, which will form the basis of the political relationships between us.Partnership (1.26.07)We have to put more effort into thinking about how Indigenous peoples will prosper and become true treaty partners in recognizing the political relationship. The episode focuses on the relationship between absence and presence, destruction and reconstruction, in abolitionist narratives and thought, and makes reference to Angela Davis's Abolition Democracy: Beyond Empire, Prisons, and Torture (2005), Mariame Kaba's We Do This ‘Til We Free Us: Abolitionist Organizing and Transforming Justice (2021), Tiffany Lethabo King's The Black Shoals: Offshore Formations of Black and Native Studies (2019), and works by W. Which is why, when it comes to Indigenous content, some fear much of artificial intelligence remains superficial ignorance. But can ‘The Cloud' incorporate culture? Can we Indigenize as we digitize? And can the digital be made relational?
