This episode will explore a different avenue involving Pearl Jam outside of their live shows. As many know, multiple members of the band are considered avid fans of baseball - most notably Eddie Vedder. From shows in legendary ballparks such as Wrigley Field and Fenway Park, to their music that's been provided as a soundtrack to the game over the years, there are about a hundred different connections that you can make with the band and the game. On the eve of Opening Day, we'll dig deep into what makes Pearl Jam and baseball the perfect match, from drawing a parallel line to the fandoms and exploring Ed's history as a rockstar ambassador to the game. Listen in as we'll have a great conversation with long time acclaimed baseball writer, Peter Gammons. Peter has been long known for his affinity for both fandoms, and we'll get to talking with him about the Hot Stove Cool Music benefit, playing on stage alongside Bernie Williams and his personal hero Buddy Guy, his relationship with Eddie, some of his favorite Pearl Jam lyrics and how they connect to baseball, Fenway Park as a music venue, and he'll even share some of his bold predictions for the upcoming 2025 season. It's a can't miss interview, make sure you tune in! We'll also talk to a panel of great friends who share passions for both the band and the game, and we'll share a lot of stories about ballpark shows and experiences. We have fan representation for the Mets, Cubs, Phillies, Red Sox, Yankees, Padres and Braves, and somehow we all made it out alive! We also put together our favorite Pearl Jam live moments that incorporate baseball, so you won't want to miss it! October 19, 2004 --The Yankees hold a 3-2 lead over the Red Sox in the ALCS with Game 6 to be played at Yankee Stadium. The starting pitchers were Curt Schilling of the Red Sox and Jon Lieber of the Yankees. Schilling pitched with a torn tendon sheath in his right ankle, which was sutured in place in an unprecedented procedure by Red Sox team doctors. The game was scoreless till the fourth inning when Sox second baseman Mark Bellhorn hit a shot into the leftfield stands. The ball struck a fan in the chest and dropped back onto the field, where Left field umpire Jim Joyce signaled that the ball was still in play. After a discussion with Sox Manager Terry Francona, the umpires huddled and overruled the call giving Bellhorn a three run homer and the Sox a 4-0 lead. Despite his injury, Shilling provided seven strong innings giving up only 1 run on a Bernie Williams homer before leaving the game completely exhausted and his sock soaked in blood. Bronson Arroyo would take over for Schilling in the eighth and give up a quick run on a Miguel Cairo double and a Derek Jeter single. With Alex Rodriguez up what followed was truly bizarre. ARod grounded a pitch back to Arroyo who scooped up the ball and ran down the first baseline to tag Rodriguez out, who slapped at Arroyo's arm and glove, knocking the ball loose. As the ball rolled down the baseline, ARod advanced to second and Jeter scored. The umpires huddled again and called Rodriguez out on interference and ordered Jeter back to first. Yankee Stadium erupted as fans rained debris onto the field prompting Francona to remove his players from the field for safety. The NYPD, in full riot gear, restored order and remained on the field for a full inning. Sox closer Keith Foulke would keep the Yanks off the board in the 9th and secure the game for Boston. The Red Sox, the 26th team in Major League Baseball playoff history to face a 3--0 series deficit, became the first to force a Game Seven.

He was co-founder of Television Production Partners, an award-winning branded entertainment company that was nominated for an Oscar, Emmy and won a Peabody Award for Hank Aaron Chasing The Dream. Rick has produced benefit concerts with Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, and Joan Jett. He executive produced the documentary My Old Friend with Paul McCartney and Carl Perkins and Rick and Perkins collaborated on several documentary concerts, benefits, and an album called Go Cat Go which included Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, John Fogerty, and Paul Simon. Recently, Rick directed and wrote the docu-concert Do Something and Vote which included performances from Bruce Springsteen, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Black Puma's, Nathaniel Rateliff and Alabama Shakes, and featured many prominent activists fighting for a safer and healthier world. The film A Father's Promise — Rick's latest documentary — tells the inspirational story of one man's journey from devastating tragedy to personal triumph. When his young son Daniel is murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a grief-stricken Mark Barden, a world class guitarist, loses all joy in the music that had defined much of his life. But, in time, Mark rewires himself to become a powerful voice for change, becoming the co-founder of Sandy Hook Promise and a tireless advocate for gun violence prevention. Mark is a father on a mission, and, with the help of his many famous music artist friends, he slowly rediscovers himself, eventually playing and performing the music that had always meant so much to him and his family. In A Father's Promise Rick takes you on Mark's powerful 10-year journey as he gradually finds his way back to music with the help of friends Sheryl Crow, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, Bernie Williams, Jimmy Vivino, the Alternate Routes, and many others. The film impactfully mixes live music performances into the storyline, underlining powerful emotions, as Mark continues to find ways to empower his music with his activism, and vice versa. A Father's Promise finds Mark honoring his son by working for change, playing his music, and building hope for a better tomorrow. In this episode host Michael Shields and Rock Korn discuss the intriguing story of how Rick came to know Mark Barden and began to work with him to tell his inspirational story.. They dig deeply into what A Father's Promise says about the power of music to heal and unite and fight for change in the world while also celebrating Mark's daughter Natalie's journey into activism. They highlight what Mark's work with Sandy Hook Promise aims to accomplish, the inspiring work of the Where Angels Play Project and the Artist For Action movement, and so much more. Hosted on Acast. Hour 1 Boomer is sick and is blaming Jerry for that. He's wearing a turtleneck today and taking Mucinex. Aaron Rodgers was on with Pat McAfee and it seems like they are running it all back. All except for Zach Wilson according to most people. Boomer wants him in Minnesota so Gio can deal with him all over again. Mike McDaniel was on Hard Knocks calling the Jaylen Waddle one play score and he was right. And then he was giggling about it. Jerry is back and here for his first update but first we told him about Peter's lack of knowledge on food. For example, he thought veal was ‘like a fake chicken'. Aaron Rodgers talked about playing a few more years. He also said Joe Douglas has put together a lot of great drafts. He called Rob Saleh a fantastic coach. He said Nate Hackett's offense is ‘quarterback friendly'. Jerry has sideline audio of Mike McDaniel predicting the Jaylen Waddle 1-play drive. Boomer said Joe Douglas needs to find players that want to compete. Tommy DeVito made good with the pizza place in NJ. Boomer said he has to get rid of all this nonsense off the field. Ja Morant was back on the court and was booed by the fans in New Orleans. We also talked about free agents not wanting to go to San Francisco because of the crime. In the final segment of the hour, George Pickens of the Steelers said he didn't block when he should have in the game against the Colts because he didn't want to get injured. He was trying to prevent the ‘Tank Dell situation'.  Hour 2 Tommy DeVito straightened everything out with the pizza place in NJ he was supposed to do an appearance at. Yesterday at one of these appearances he took a pic with Snooki. Boomer wants him to focus on the remaining three games of the season. Boomer thinks the Giants can beat the Eagles right now. ‘They're not right', said Boomer. Gio thinks he injured his achilles while plugging in his phone charger. Jerry returns for an update but first we talked about Fionna Apple and Brenda Lee's Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree. Aaron Rodgers was on with Pat McAfee and said a lot more amazing things are to come with him in a Jets uniform. Zach Wilson's mom took to Instagram and talked about him fighting through some big hits. George Pickens said he gets criticized by media members who don't play the game. Micah Parsons can't understand the Cowboys hate. Shannon Sharpe and Ochocinco talked about how long it's been since the Cowboys went past the second round of the playoffs. Michael Irvin didn't like Sean Payton yelling at Russell Wi lson on the sideline. He also said he never saw him do that to Drew Brees. In the final segment of the hour, Gio was amused by McMonigle talking about the lyrics to Rudolph The Red-nosed Reindeer and somehow turned it into a Yankees point. It seems like the Yamamoto decision could go past Christmas and after the New Year.  Hour 3 Boomer tells us which coordinators are going to get interviews for head coaching jobs, and which head coaches will be out. Names like Bill Belichick and Mike Tomlin. Gio said he would never hire a defensive head coach again. Just go get a good defensive coordinator. Boomer asked Gio why he thinks the Giants had this kind of bad year. Gio thinks it was a tough, early schedule. Also, the defense not playing up to their potential. And then they lost their starting QB. Boomer blamed the offensive line early and the defense not being great early in the season. They lost games to the Jets and Bills they should have won. Jerry returns for an update but first we go through a few gifts people brought to our live show. We go yo-yos as well. Boomer claims he can yo-yo. A caller to Evan & Tiki said the media is eating out of Aaron Rodgers' hand. Jake Browning talked about his comments after the win over the Vikings. The Knicks play the Nets tonight in Brooklyn. Shaq can't believe the Lakers hung a banner for winning the in season tournament. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer does a Todd Bowles impression about Baker Mayfield putting his face in a fan. Gio has done zero Christmas shopping so far. His wife doesn't trust him getting her a good gift. She wants to go shopping with him where she picks her gift out. Gio is proposing no more gifts between him and his wife. We also talked about what we'll be doing in Vegas the week of the Super bowl.  Hour 4 Forbes has the values for all of the sports franchises. They do this at the end of every year. The Cowboys would go for at least $9 billion. 4 New York teams are on the list. Yankees are 1, Giants are 2, and the Knicks and Jets are tied. The Mets are not on the list of Top 15. Overall the Cowboys are 1, Yankees are 2, Patriots and Warriors are tied at 3, then Rams and Giants. A caller wonders if the Dolphins could beat the 49'ers. Gio does not want the Ravens in the Super Bowl as it would be a ‘snooze fest'. Jerry returns for his final update of the day but first Gio tells us about some guy that was jerky near the elevator. Jerry also talked about driving by couples in cars that look miserable. Shannon Sharpe and Ochocinco talked about a hotel in Japan that's only $1 a night but you are live streamed the whole time. Ochocinco said he used to do amateur porn. Jerry Rice said Brock Purdy is cool under pressure like Joe Montana. Brandon Tierney wasn't thrilled that Hoffman interrupted the show to say the Yankees are in talks to bring Bernie Williams to YES. The Moment of The Day involves taking a bat out of Joe DiMaggio's hand and Boomer kicking Gio in the achilles. In the final segment of the show, Paul Skenes and Livvy Dunne came to NYC for the holidays. Gio wonders why tourists still come here.

Today we are joined by director Rick Korn to discuss his documentary film A FATHER'S PROMISE The film, produced by Sheryl Crow, tells the story of professional musician Mark Barden whose life changed instantly when his son Daniel was murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary. After the loss of his son, Mark lost all interest in music and vowed to do everything in his power to help prevent gun violence so that no one else must go through what he and his family went through. The film follows Mark as he turned his tragedy into activism and in doing so rediscovered his lost passion for music. The documentary features performances and interviews from Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, Karen Fairchild of Little Big Town, Darryl DMC McDaniels, Bernie Williams, and more, as well as music by John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, Steve Winwood, David Shaw (The Revivalists), and others. Ultimately, this documentary was another way for Barden to connect and heal through music, as well as to honor Daniel's life and memory. A FATHERS PROMISE world premiere and North American theatrical run begins on December 8th in New York City. The New York Yankees could have Bryce Harper, and Harper was on the Pat McAfee show on ESPN talking about how he grew up a Yankee fan and idolized guys like Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada, and Derek Jeter. But the Yankees, according to GM Brian Cashman, already had six outfielders and didn't need Bryce Harper at the start of the 2019 season. So Steve and Stacey played a game of what if. What if the Yankees did get Bryce Harper? Which subsequent moves wouldn't have been made? Which trades wouldn't have happened? How would the Yankees have performed in the playoffs from 2019-2022 if Bryce Harper was a Yankee? Then, they discuss an article written by Joel Sherman, who compares the current-day Houston Astros to the dynasty-era New York Yankees. Is he right? Stacey tries not to get sick when comparing the two teams. And finally, the Astros are taking on the Texas Rangers in the ALCS, and Jordan Montgomery pitched a gem for the Rangers. Montgomery has been pitching well so far in October for the Rangers. Are Yankee fans happy for him? Stacey is. October 9, 1996 - Bernie Williams hit a home run in the11th inning to give the New York Yankees a 5 - 4 victory over Baltimore in Game1 of the American League Championship Series. The Yankees were also aided by anassist from a young fan, which proved to be a game changer. The O's held a 4-3lead when Derek Jeter hit a ball to deep right field. Right fielder TonyTarasco positioned himself to make the play when 12 year old Jeffrey Maierreached out and deflected the ball into the stands and Umpire Rich Garciacalled the hit a home run. Garcia lateradmitted that there was spectator interference, though he maintained the ballwas not catchable despite overwhelming visual evidence to the contrary. October 9, 1910 - Nap Lajoie, in a batting race with TyCobb, collected eight hits for Cleveland in a season-ending doubleheader withthe St. Louis Browns. The hits were somewhat tainted; however, as St. Louisthird baseman Red Corriden played back as Lajoie bunted safely six times.Regardless, Cobb was awarded the batting title by a fraction of a point. October 9, 1920 - Several hours before the start of Game4 of the World Series, Brooklyn's Rube Marquard, a Cleveland native, isarrested when he tries to sell a ticket to an undercover cop for $350. He willbe found guilty and fined one dollar and court costs ($3.80). For their first WorldSeries game on the lakefront, 25,734 Indians fans watch their home team win thegame 5 - 1. October 9, 2005 - The Houston Astros defeated the AtlantaBraves 7 - 6 in a record setting NLDS Game 4 in extra innings. The game setseveral records, including longest post season game ever at 18 innings, longestpost season game by time (5 hours, 50 minutes), and first post season game withtwo grand slams. SEASON 2 EPISODE 48: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Kevin McCarthy is out and the ensuing chaos mainlines directly back to an episode of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." House Republican Radicals caught that proverbial car they've been chasing and they had no idea what to do next and they look like idiots. The offing of Kevin McCarthy is actually notable only because a) it underscores the reality that the Republicans have bluster and the novelty of having opened the pandora's box of fascism and political violence, but they don't have any leaders, as evidenced by b) Kevin McCarthy saying on Face The Nation, two days before they garroted him, that he'd survive and they should bring it on and now THAT'S probably the worst political TV interview of our time leading to c) his epic news conference last night in which he compared Vladimir Putin to Hitler in the ‘30s and concluding with d) McCarthy's only actual accomplishment – he lasted 270 days in the job, 12 more than the record holder for shortest speakership. But the REAL lead story did not happen in Washington yesterday. WHICH idiot Republican becomes the NEW Future Former Speaker of the House doesn't much matter. Because the real lead story is summarized by the phrase AND NOW WE WAIT. Turns out that not only did Judge Arthur Engoron issue a gag order against Trump hours after Trump attacked the clerk of Engoron's court room yesterday, but he issued a gag order against Trump less than a day after he WARNED Trump's lawyers informally that their client needed to shut the eff up. Engoron – of whom they should be installing a statue outside his courtroom – provided a template for Judge Tonya Chutkan for a week from next Monday. Judge Engoron not only gagged Trump but HOW he gagged him ALSO gags Junior Trump and Eric Trump: “Personal attacks on members of my court staff are unacceptable, inappropriate, and I won't tolerate it. Consider this statement a gag order forbidding all parties from posting, emailing or speaking publicly about any of my staff.” But this trial is ultimately MOST valuable because what we just saw was the if-then scenario play out. Engoron didn't just issue a gag order because Trump attacked the clerk. He had WARNED HIM, via his lawyers, informally but clearly. And twelve hours later Trump did it anyway. Memo to Judge Chutkan: Get ready to issue a gag order, on penalty of revoking his bail, after that hearing October 16. And get ready to have to enforce it. B-Block (24:15) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Campbell Brown is out as news chief at Meta/Facebook so I have to tell you the story of how CNN's president was forced to hire her instead of me at 8 PM there (and they then all got fired), which in turn means I have to tell the story of how Brown's Meta colleague Anne Kornblut wound up being interviewed by the MSNBC anchor (Savannah Guthrie) her husband left her for. And then there's Rep. Jamaal Bowman, who apologized for referencing Nazis in the Republican Party. Why? There ARE Nazis in the Republican Party. We call them...Nazis. C-Block (33:25) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It's baseball playoff time again, so it's time for me to tell you about the year I was in the middle of a riot in Fenway Park, and I overheard a Yankee swearing at his manager in the clubhouse, and I bought - and chose not to air - videotape of Roger Clemens nearly getting into a fistfight with a Yankee fan before Game 3 of the World Series.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hour 1: The Mets and Yankees both come limping into the Subway Series starting tomorrow night. Gleyber Torres had a lazy error in last night's game that just can't happen. The Mets and Yankees will both be without their big hitter as Aaron Judge and Pete Alonso are both hurt. Gio can't believe a healthy Giancarlo Stanton didn't play last night. Buck Showalter had a closed door meeting with the team that resulted in one win. The Mets are really tough to watch right now. Jerry is here for his first update but first Boomer is pissed off that we are out of coffee beans for his fresh coffee. He starts with the Yankees losing on Sunday night baseball. We also have audio of John Sterling getting hit in the face with a foul ball on Saturday. Craig and Evan got a letter yelling at them for claiming the Rays are cheaters. The Mets lost to the Pirates yesterday and lost 2-of-3 over the weekend. Saquon Barkley talked at his football camp about the July 17th deadline between he and the Giants and the franchise tag. Zach Wilson was asked what he thought when he heard the rumors Aaron Rodgers was coming. The Nuggets are looking to win the NBA title tonight at home in Denver. In the final segment of the hour, Aaron Rodgers continues to be living his best life. He went to see Ed Sheeran at MetLife and he went to the Tony Awards last night.  Hour 2: Saquon Barkley talked to reporters at his football camp about his contract situation with the Giants. They have until July 17 to get a deal done or he will have to play under the franchise tag of $10 million. He is probably looking for $40 million guaranteed but that would be money poorly spent. Boomer did say that from Saquon's perspective, it's insulting to only get $10 million. Boomer said he wouldn't sign it either. Gio wonders if the over/under for Giants wins changes if Saquon Barkley doesn't play this year. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the Yankees loss to the Red Sox on Sunday Night Baseball. The Mets lost to the Pirates in Pittsburgh and lost the series. Jerry has audio from Danielle McCartan screaming at a caller about the Mets. The Subway Series gets underway tomorrow and the Mets have Scherzer and Verlander pitching. Jerry has audio from Saquon Barkley at his football camp. Aaron Rodgers talked about having fun coming to work in a great quarterback room. Tyreek Hill thinks he can be a 2,000 yard receiver this year. The Nuggets can win the NBA Championship tonight if they can beat the Heat in Denver. In the final segment of the hour, Gio updates us on his daughter's dance recital from Friday. Boomer was also drinking Casamigos while watching the Mets on Friday night. He was tweeting out YouTube videos of music he was watching.  Hour 3: Joel Sherman of the NY Post interviewed Steve Cohen and he said when things get bad with the Mets, he's not going to blow up. He said it wouldn't solve any problems and could be demotivating. He kept comparing the Mets situation to running a hedge fund. Boomer said the Mets just need a nice 10-game winning streak and everything can change. Gio does not see that happening with this Mets team. A caller is starting to get nervous about the Jets and Aaron Rodgers based on the Mets with Scherzer and Verlander. Jerry returns for an update but first Anthony Gallo was recognized by a listener while he was on a date. John Sterling got hit by a foul ball on Saturday. The Mets lost to the Pirates yesterday and lost the series. Saquon Barkley talked to the media at his football camp about the upcoming July 17 deadline. If a deal is not done by then he will have to play for the franchise tag or sit out. Zach Wilson talked about all the things he's learning from Aaron Rodgers. Tom Brady was on a yacht with Mr Beast and knocked a drone out of the sky and into the ocean. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer said the bacon on his sandwich sucks. He's also annoyed that people didn't come in last week because of the smoke.  Hour 4: Bernie Williams joined us in the studio and we talked about wine and cheese guys that were on his Yankees teams. We also talked about the Aaron Judge injury and the effect it's had on the Yankees. Bernie said he loved playing in the Subway Series. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the Yankees losing to the Red Sox  The Mets lost in Pittsburgh and dropped another series but at least they weren't swept this time. Jack Curry is an award-winning sports journalist. He spent 20 years covering baseball for the New York Times before shifting to television to work for the YES Network, where he has worked since 2010. He is the co-author of three New York Times bestsellers and has recently authored a new book on the 25th anniversary of the 1998 Yankees, a team that won the World Series and a total of 125 games. The book is entitled, “The 1998 Yankees: The Inside Story of the Greatest Baseball Team Ever.” Curry has won six New York Emmy Awards. In this episode, Curry explains the stories of that team. That season's headlines were dominated by the home run chase of Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, and until the World Series, the country hadn't focused on the Yankees. Still, that team featured superstars like Derek Jeter, Paul O'Neill, and Bernie Williams, and had bench players like Darryl Strawberry and Tim Raines. Also covered in this episode, Curry discusses his role with the YES Network and discusses his thoughts on the current Yankees, specifically Aaron Judge, rookie Anthony Volpe, and manager Aaron Boone. Are Invasive Jumping Worms Taking Over? Most gardeners are thrilled when they find earthworms tunneling through their gardens. Normally, they're a sign of rich soil, happy plants, and a bustling ecosystem. But one unwanted visitor is squirming its way into gardens and forests all across the country: the invasive jumping worm, known for its thrashing, restless behavior. Gardeners and scientists have become more and more concerned with these worms, which can cause damage in yards and forests. They're known for taking dense, healthy soil and churning it into a coffee ground-like mixture, which can lead to erosion and make it more challenging for plants to anchor themselves. But it turns out that most earthworms we find in the U.S. are already invasive, and the jumping worm is just the newest one to join the party. How different is this invasive worm from the ones we're more familiar with? To learn more, guest host John Dankosky speaks with Bernie Williams, a plant pest and disease specialist at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources based in Madison, Wisconsin. They talk about how to spot these worms, what kind of damage they inflict, and just how concerned we should be.   The Strange, Scrambled Genomes of Squid and Octopus Squids, octopuses, cuttlefishes, and other humble members of the cephalopod class of mollusks are many-armed (or tentacled) wizards. They change colors—despite being unable to see color themselves—to camouflage themselves. They squirt ink to escape danger. They have huge brains compared to their body sizes, which, in the case of octopuses, are distributed throughout their bodies. They can even edit their RNA to allow whole new kinds of chemistry in their bodies, potentially allowing them to adapt more quickly to changing environments. This year, SciFri continues the tradition of Cephalopod Week, celebrating the fancy tricks and ineffable strangeness of these animals. Cephalopod researchers Carrie Albertin and Z. Yan Wang talk to John Dankosky about the newest puzzles coming to light in cephalopod genomes, including genes never seen in any other animals. Plus, learn more about the dramatic, self-destructive process by which mother octopuses die after laying their eggs—powered, it seems, by steroids.   Plastic Surgery, Born In The Trenches The phrase “plastic surgery” may evoke different connotations for different people. For many, what's conjured is a procedure done for cosmetic purposes, something likely not deemed medically necessary, and probably not covered by insurance. But the history of plastic surgery goes back to a time where facial reconstruction was often a matter of life and death. The practice got its start on the gritty, European battlefields of World War I, where surgeons and nurses had to learn fast to fix the often horrific facial injuries sustained in battle. For the men with these injuries, the innovative, often traumatic procedures were life-changing. No matter the reason, the decision to get plastic surgery is very personal, and reflects a desire to change something about one's appearance. The World War I history of plastic surgery, and how it set the stage for today's uses, is the subject of the new book The Facemaker, written by medical historian and author Lindsey Fitzharris. Lindsey joins guest host John Dankosky from Washington, D.C.   Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
