Sen. Chuck Schumer — who called on Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta to resign and said President Trump should “answer” for his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein — accepted thousands of dollars in donations from the alleged pedophile throughout the 1990s, The Post has learned. Federal Election Commission records show that Schumer received seven $1,000 donations from Epstein between 1992 and 1997, first as a US congressman from New York and then when he was vying to be the state’s senator in 1998, an election he won. Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta publicly defended his role in overseeing the prosecution of Jeffrey Epstein for sex crimes committed in Florida.  Democrats have been calling for his resignation for accepting what was called a sweetheart deal that let Epstein off with very little consequences.  Acosta said that his office stepped in to make sure he served jail time when going to trial was a roll of the dice. Ursula Perano, reporter at Axios joins us for details. Next, an Asian couple from Queens gave birth to twins through in-vitro fertilization, but a huge shock came when they were delivered, the babies were not theirs, they were not of Asian descent, and the twins weren't even related.  A Los Angeles fertility clinic screwed the whole thing up and now two lawsuits have been filed over the whole ordeal.  My producer Miranda joins us for this IVF mix up. Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta held a press conference today in which he attempted to defend the outrageously lenient plea deal he negotiated when he was a U.S. attorney in Florida with the ultra-rich, well-connected financier Jeffrey Epstein. The release of Justice Department’s Inspector General report on the Mueller investigation is being pushed back because investigators spent much of June interviewing Christopher Steele. Meanwhile, Yahoo News reporter Mike Isikoff is at it again. After writing an utterly discredited book on how the Steele Dossier was a Russian intelligence operation and doubling down on the equally discredited Russia collusion narrative, Isikoff has published an article saying that reports that former DNC staffer Seth Rich was killed by a hit squad working on behalf of Hillary Clinton was, you guessed it, a Russian propaganda operation. Isikoff makes pointed accusations, but the facts in his piece just don’t add up. Jim Kavanagh, the editor of thepolemicist.net, joins the show. The US is promising to ramp up sanctions on Iran and is seeking to create a military coalition to protect commercial shipping off the coasts of Iran and Yemen. Under the plan, a coalition of nations would patrol the Persian Gulf and the Straits of Hormuz, near Iran, and the narrow Bab al-Mandeb that separates Yemen from Africa. This comes just days after the Pentagon sent an additional 2500 troops to the Middle East. Brian and John speak with Massoud Shadjareh. He is the founder of the Islamic Human Rights Commission. At least ten Syrian soldiers were killed yesterday by an al-Qaeda affiliate supported by the US and Turkey in fighting outside Aleppo. In one case, fighters from the Turkestan Islamic Party captured a Syrian border guard near Lattakia, beheaded him, posted a photo of his severed head on his Facebook page using his cell phone, and then called his mother to mock him. Francis Boyle, a professor of international law at the University of Illinois College of Law and author of the book “Destroying World Order: US Imperialism in the Middle East Before and After September 11,” joins the show. The governments of the UK and Canada are hosting an event supposedly about press freedom this week, but in a bizarre irony is refusing to allow RT and Sputnik to participate. Federal prosecutors on Monday released an indictment against billionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein charging him with sex trafficking and creating a vast network of underage victims for him to sexually exploit.  The indictment alleges that he would pay girls for massages that would then become sex acts and then paid the girls more money to recruit other girls.  This story has a lot of details and even has connections to the current Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta.  Kate Briquelet, senior reporter at the Daily Beast was in court for Epstein's arraignment and joins us for details. Next, records shared with the Washington Post are showing that the FBI and ICE are using state driver's license photos as a go-to place for facial-recognition searches.  Agents are scanning the faces of many Americans without their consent or knowledge.  Between 2015 and 2017, Utah's DMV database was alone the subject of nearly 2,000 facial recognition searches from outside law enforcement agencies. Drew Harwell, tech reporter for the Washington Post, joins us for how your state's DMV database is turning into a facial recognition gold mine. As North Carolina recovers from Hurricane Florence, state government leaders are happy to have access to a $2 billion “rainy-day fund.” The Republican-led General Assembly made a concerted effort to rebuild that fund in recent years. Joseph Coletti, John Locke Foundation senior fellow, explains why. Coletti also explains how the fund could help state government move more quickly to address issues arising from Florence’s damage. Amid recent controversies involving Facebook, some critics have called for increased regulation of the social media giant. Computer expert Bob Chandler, president of Macvantage, discusses Facebook’s recent woes. Chandler examines pros and cons related to government involvement in Facebook’s operations. The U.S. Supreme Court nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh has taken recent twists and turns. North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis recently chided Democratic colleagues and left-of-center partisan activists for refusing to engage Kavanaugh on substantive legal issues. President Trump recently traveled to Charlotte to unveil a new program designed to help more small business employees save money for retirement. U.S. Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta, Linda McMahon of the Small Business Administration, and other national and local business leaders joined the president to tout the new program. The arrival of Hurricane Florence prompted N.C. officials to trigger the state’s price-gouging law. It allows people to complain to government when they believe vendors are charging prices that are too high. Roy Cordato, John Locke Foundation senior economist, says the law creates serious negative unintended consequences. Among them: empty store shelves and dried-up gas pumps. Cordato explains why higher prices make sense during an emergency.
