The Fatal Night in Englewood: The Story of T'Anda Hall

Texas Wine and True Crime

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 19, 2025 30:05 Transcription Available

Send us a textWhen neighbors felt the walls of their Chicago apartment growing hot on a summer night in 2018, they knew something was terribly wrong. Behind those walls, 38-year-old bartender and mother of three T'Anda Hall lay beaten and dying as flames began consuming her bedroom — the tragic culmination of what had started as a friendly card game hours earlier.T'Anda had recently met Wes Arnold, a man whose violent history remained hidden from her until it was too late. Friends who'd been playing cards with them that evening described Arnold growing increasingly agitated, particularly when money from T'Anda's "Rainy Day Fund" went missing. Sensing danger, they left. Minutes later, neighbors heard running footsteps down the stairwell. The investigation revealed a pattern all too familiar in cases of domestic violence. Arnold, on parole for battery at the time, had an extensive history of abusing women — so severe that even his own family refused to shelter him. Security footage, witness testimony, and forensic evidence painted a clear picture of what happened after T'Anda's friends departed: a brutal beating followed by arson meant to cover his tracks. Most disturbing was the medical examiner's finding that T'Anda had smoke in her lungs, meaning she was still alive when Arnold set the fire. While evading capture, Arnold's violence continued. He assaulted another woman who had briefly given him shelter, leaving her with 17 stitches. This pattern of escalating violence ultimately led to his conviction and life sentence plus 50 years for arson.T'Anda's story serves as a haunting reminder of how quickly violence can escalate and the importance of recognizing warning signs in potentially dangerous relationships. Through our exploration of this case, we honor her memory while examining the factors that led to this preventable tragedy.Have you witnessed warning signs in a friend's relationship? Sharing your story might help others recognize dangerous situations before they escalate. This week, we enjoyed a delicious selection from Robert Clay Vineyards. The 2017 Texas Hill Country Ruby Cabernet is a mellow, long-aged wine with unique aromas and flavors of maple, brown sugar and vanilla bean, but bone dry and medium bodied with rounded tannins. Absolutely phenomenal.Magic Mind

Let's Talk Through It Our first friend makes significantly more money than her fiance, and did not feel obligated to tell him how much she makes. They discussed purchasing their first home together and after getting married she doesn't want him to bank on her income to contribute to half of the bills. Nate Benefield, Senior VP at the Commonwealth Foundation joins Dawn LIVE! Nate expands on the recent Commonwealth report expanding on the Shapiro budget, and the deficit that PA residents could face long after Gov. Shapiro's stint as Governor...  From the report: Gov. Josh Shapiro proposed a $48.3 billion 2024–25 General Fund budget, a $3 billion or 7.1 percent spending increase compared to last year's ongoing general fund spending. The proposal overestimates revenue growth and underestimates spending growth compared to projections from the Pennsylvania Independent Fiscal Office (IFO), meaning deficits under Shapiro's plan may be even higher than projected.Shapiro's budget would balloon the structural deficit to more than $6 billion. His proposed series of startling increases and new initiatives would empty Pennsylvania's checking account and illegally raid the Rainy Day Fund, necessitating a tax hike of more than $2,000 per family of four.Pennsylvania's aging population and the persistent, troubling outmigration of its working-age residents present long-term budgetary challenges for policymakers. Shapiro's budget, as proposed, fails to address our economic competitiveness, exacerbating these trends. California's budget deficit continues to grow, and state lawmakers have less than a month to cut a deal with Governor Newsom on how to erase it. The governor's revised budget reveals the state went from a 97 billion dollar surplus exactly a year ago, to more than 31 billion dollars in the red now. The governor is not projecting a recession just yet, unlike some economists, so he's not ready to tap into the state's Rainy Day Fund, which is still there just in case this deficit gets even larger. And he says he will not support raising taxes, which some Democrats in Sacramento want to do, especially on the Assembly side. But he and the legislature don't necessarily see eye to eye on what to cut and where to spend. For more, Brett, Patti, and Doug spoke with State Assemblyman Phil Ting of San Francisco, the Democrat who chairs the Assembly Budget Committee.

(KMAS) Dan Griffey made his weekly appearance this week on Daybreak and he and Jeff Slakey discussed the new transportation-construction package in the House, among other things.  The controversial cross-border tax was struck from the bill.  Unfortunately, according to Griffey, the money would now be taken from the Public Works Trust Fund. Many communities use this fund for a variety of infrastructure projects. Representative Griffey does not think that this redirecting of the Trust Fund money will stand in final reviews.  Jeff asked who constituents should reach out to should they want to contact someone about this legislation. Representative Griffey suggested contacting the committee chairs, who know the ins and out of the process. Constituents can also call Representative Griffey's office at (360) 786-7966, and they can help state their case to the committees. His website is dangriffey.houserepublicans.wa.gov.The two also addressed the “Rainy Day” Fund and how low it is as a percentage of the budget. Griffey guesses the strategic reserves will be somewhere in the amount of $100 million out of a total spending amount of around $65 billion.   “With $13 billion in unexpected revenues, I think we could have done a lot better,” said Griffey.  Representative Griffey also suggested we should be prepared in light of the war in Ukraine, saying the events between Ukraine and Russia will have global implications.  He said that the state's ability to repay debts is similar to an individual's ability to repay debts and that the more money a state has in reserves, the higher the state's bond rating. This has a big influence on Washington's ability to borrow money and to pay it back. The upcoming fire season was also a subject of discussion in the interview.  “A resilient forest is one that resists the effects of wildfires."“When you look at the treated sections and the non treated sections, it's night and day as far as resistance,” Griffey said. It's the difference between a fire hitting a forest at a “snail's pace” versus the swiftness of a “freight train.”Representative Griffey, a local firefighter as well, explained we can't let our guard down.“We will need to make sure our firefighting equipment remains state of the art and that it can be deployed quickly”, said Griffey.  Representative Dan Griffey represents the 35th District and appears weekly on Daybreak during the Legislative Session.
