Os Estados Unidos festejaram este fim-de-semana os 250 anos da sua independência, numa festa com pompa e circunstância assegurada por Donald Trump, mas perturbada desde logo pelas condições meteorológicas, mas também micro-escândalos como a ingerência do Presidente no Mundial de Futebol e as ameaças iranianas durante as cerimónias funerárias de Ali Khamenei, em plenas negociações de paz. Nos discursos oficiais, Donald Trump afirmou que os norte-americanos devem estar "mais orgulhosos que nunca" com os feitos do país, mas não mencionou as desigualdades e assimetrias vividas na prática entre estados, mas também entre zonas rurais e urbanas ou até mesmo entre bairros vizinhos, tendo em conta a cor da pele dos habitantes. Nos Estados Unidos, a classe mais rica possui 71 vezes mais riqueza que a classe média, com a Oxfam a estimar que há actualmente quase 44 milhões de norte-americanos pobres, entre eles quase 10 milhões de crianças, um dos números mais elevados nos países da OCDE. Ao mesmo tempo, há quase 24 milhões de milionários nos Estados Unidos. João Pedro Ferreira, economista e director de Economia e Políticas Públicas do Centro Weldon Cooper, da Universidade da Virgínia, nos Estados Unidos, explicou em entrevista à RFI que os Estados Unidos são, desde o início, uma manta de retalhos e que muitas garantias da Constituição, que visam desde a fundação a coesão no país, estão hoje em perigo. Não é, de facto, um país homogéneo. E é importante reconhecer isso", detalhou. "Quando se tem um sistema económico que, por exemplo, nos últimos anos tem privilegiado os 1% mais ricos e os 99% restantes estão cada vez mais pobres, não se pode ter uma democracia na prática, porque isso significa que há pessoas que têm o poder de fazer coisas que estão muito acima do que o resto do comum dos mortais pode fazer. Isso tornou-se mais evidente com esta última administração federal, com esta administração Trump, com um conjunto de oligarcas que têm acesso privilegiado a leis e à ausência de regulação. E isso distorce a democracia, porque a democracia foi feita para o povo, para a maioria. E está claramente em causa agora. Por exemplo, quando olhamos para os dados da segregação racial e da pobreza, percebemos que há comunidades inteiras com determinado tipo de identidade, que são as que mais sofrem com as questões da pobreza. Trump said Wednesday that he heard the United States had a deal with Harvard. “I hear we have a deal but who the hell knows with them,” Trump told reporters.
