All I want to do is talk about Madonna

Kenny and Mark celebrate the return of the power ballad with Boy Culture himself (and author of the essential Encyclopedia Madonnica) Matthew Rettenmund! Topics include: nepo babies, Celine Dion, potential cover albums, illegal downloads, the value of spite, Jason Derulo, My Two Dads, vocal “edging”, lyrical warnings and promises, bringing a golf club to an apocalypse, Stevie Nicks, Terrence Howard, Ariana Grande, mature dance breaks, resistant industry tides, Taylor Swift, the Ellen residency, Andy Cohen and Sandra Bernhard, and Matt makes a strong case for Rebel Heart as the ultimate embarrassment of riches. Plus, Matt shares the inspiration behind Encyclopedia Madonnica, his evolving embrace (and flexibility) of the fandom ride, rejecting the binge mentality, and another encounter with the legendary (and witty) Liz Rosenberg. “I don't want to focus on the hair."Matthew Rettenmund's BoyCulture website & blog

Bibliophiles everywhere know the sweet feeling of getting lost in a book. And like all good literary snobs, we tend to think that full immersion requires a distraction-free relationship between reader and text. But was it always so? After examining early modern French literature, Geoffrey Turnovsky (Reading Typographically: Immersed in Print in Early Modern France) thinks that the answer might not be so simple. In this episode, Jacke and Geoffrey discuss the stereotypes and myths centering around the act of reading a print-based book - and what insights they might deliver to readers in an age of digitization. PLUS Liz Rosenberg (A Strange Life: Selected Essays of Louisa May Alcott) stops by to discuss her choice for the last book she will ever read. Enjoy this episode? Looking for something else? Since the publication of Little Women in 1868, millions of readers have gotten to know (and love) Louisa May Alcott through her fiction. But in her own day, Alcott was well known as an essayist who wrote on a wide range of subjects, including her father's failed utopian commune and her experience as a Civil War army nurse. In this episode, Jacke talks to Alcott biographer and editor Liz Rosenberg (Scribbles, Sorrows, and Russet Leather Boots: A Life of Louisa May Alcott) about her new book, A Strange Life: Selected Essays of Louisa May Alcott. Dennis is joined via Zoom by author and blogger Matthew Rettenmund to talk about the brand new revised edition of his book Encyclopedia Madonnica, which is just like it sounds, a 700+ page guidebook for all things Madonna. He talks about the starting work on the first edition of the book back in 1995, what makes this new edition special, the process of choosing the photos and why he chose to make a hardcover edition for the first time. He also recalls his first exposure to Madonna, his massive collection of Madonna memorabilia, the multiple times he's encountered her in person and the time he finally got to get a photo with her and the sassy thing she said to him. Dennis shares his own Madonna touchstone moments, like the failed Blond Ambition dance audition that started his writing career and getting to interview her for Bedtime Stories and asking her if she ever had sex to her own music. Other topics include: getting to interview Madonna's longtime publicist Liz Rosenberg and Desperately Seeking Susan director Susan Seidelman for the new edition, the Madonna biopic that may or may not ever happen, what it'll be like when she passes, why we want some of our divas to be rude and what working on the book and being a Madonna fan generally has meant to him in his life. https://www.boyculture.com/
