541 Ethical Dilemmas in Healthcare: Insights from a Medical Ethicist with Camille Renella

As a legal nurse consultant, when you go through medical records, you may see indications that an ethics consult was called or that ethical issues were considered. You may also find yourself struggling with aspects of the decisions made regarding the patient and feel the need of advice from an expert in medical ethics. Camille Renella opens the door to this little-understood aspect of medicine. She begins by pointing out that ethics has lower regard than the law in terms of application simply because legal violations generate so many more repercussions. At an earlier time, doctors and administrative personnel didn't even want to deal with issues like setting up ethics committees in their institutions. Today no formal qualifications exist for sitting on such a committee. In contrast, medical ethicists receive formal, usually post-doctoral, education in their field. They look at those who are working around the patient and consider the standard of care and code of ethics of each group of practitioners and how their application of these values can benefit the patient. The need for a clinical medical ethicist particularly arises in continuation of life issues. This can involve conflicts between family members and clinical staff, issues around advanced directives, and other considerations. Camille raises important ethical and practical issues in this informative podcast. It will broaden your perspective about what is involved in medical decisions. Join me in this episode of Ethical Dilemmas in Healthcare: Insights from a Medical Ethicist with Camille Renella What does a medical ethicist do? What are the requirements for sitting on an ethics committee? How do issues of life support get involved with ethics? How do hospital and medical costs impact ethics decisions? Across the globe, disaster can strike at a moments notice. While news headlines often focus on the death toll or economic cost, there's another hidden expense when natural disasters wreck havoc – the mental health of those who survive. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck along the border of Turkey and Syria has killed more than 50,000 and caused billions in damage for two countries ill-equipped to handle such devastation. What better way to support young kids to be happy and healthy students than to encourage them to play. Unfortunately, that's not the way we operate in the U.S. Instead, we prioritize test scores and sitting quietly and academically-charged preschools.   It's no wonder that our youth are depressed and unhappy. We're so busy believing the myths about education and children that social media and the media feed us that we aren't looking at the hard facts. That kids are not meant to sit quietly every day. We can't do that as adults…why are we expecting three-year-olds to?   This week on the podcast, author and early childhood education consultant Rae Pica debunks four big myths about early childhood education. You can hear the passion in her voice when she shares examples from teachers she's talked to and classrooms she's visited.   This was such a refreshing conversation from someone who gets it. And I love the tips she shared to help us get active and speak out for the benefit of our kids. About Rae Pica: Rae Pica has served as a consultant in early childhood education for more than four decades. The author of 22 books, including her latest, Spark a Revolution in Early Education: Speaking Up for Ourselves and the Children, Rae is also a keynote speaker and online course creator. One of our goals as parents is to raise confident, independent human beings who can take care of themselves so they can one day leave home and start a life of their own. The problem is, today's culture of gentle hands-on parenting is often construed as not letting your child make any mistakes, and doing everything for them. So how can we encourage autonomy in our children from a young age in a kind and supportive manner? What are some things we can let our toddlers do on their own to help build their confidence? In this episode, I talk to early childhood consultant Rae Pica about ways to develop and educate your child as a whole by letting them take action on their own and make their own decisions and mistakes. Author of 22 books, including What If Everybody Understood Child Development? and What If We Taught the Way Children Learn? In the 9th episode of Season 2 of the Demystifying Diversity Podcast follows host Daralyse Lyons as she dives deeper into Ageism as it is interwoven into the fabric of American society. Daralyse is joined by gerontologists, activists, and researchers for an in-depth examination of the implications that ageism has on both our personal lives and how we operate within society at large. None of us are immune to ageism, especially older and younger individuals. While the previous episode focused on the abuses caused by ageism, this episode offers tangible suggestions for overcoming ageism in ourselves and in others. In this episode, you will learn about: How markers such as a person's age can be reframed through inclusive language. The importance of recognizing and understanding someone's entire lived experience, and appreciating the myriad ways our accumulated experiences shape each of us as individuals. The societal forces that are needed in order to make our society more age-inclusive. The direct links between how a person perceives their own age, and its impact on their overall health and well-being. Ageism's role in furthering capitalism and whiteness, and how if unchecked, it can promote other -isms as well. Our guests in this episode include: Ryan Backer - Ryan is the co-creator of OldSchool, an anti-ageism clearinghouse. He is an age activist striving to undo ageism within an intersectional framework. They aim to eradicate ageism, along with white supremacy, gender bias, ableism, body shaming, homophobia, classism and all other forms of oppression. Lena Makaroun - Lena is an ex-officio board member with the American Geriatrics Society, a nationwide, not-for-profit society of geriatrics healthcare professionals dedicated to improving the health, independence, and quality of life of older people, is a Geriatrician and Research Fellow who also sees patients at the VA Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion in Pittsburgh. She studies the intersection between health policy and health equity, with a particular interest in assessing the social determinants of aging on health and in reducing and preventing elder abuse. Trish D'Antonio - Trish is the Vice President of Policy and Professional Affairs for the Gerontological Society of America, an organization that is dedicated to supporting individuals in living meaningful lives as they age, something which requires a multidisciplinary and intersectional approach. Mia Mullen & Kiersten Jacobs - Two members of LeadingAge's executive team, Mia is LeadingAge's Associate Director of Strategic Initiatives and Kiersten is Senior Director of Shared Learning Initiatives. Together, they work to address the effectiveness of internal and external initiatives and to advance LeadingAge's ageism work, with a strategic focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Theresa Reid - Having spent much of her working life in the nonprofit sector, Theresa has spent time to establish and then run the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, The Chicago Children's Advocacy Center, ArtsEngine and Living Arts and the Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities. She has chaired her county's chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. And she is the innovator behind Aging For Life. Theresa sees the connections between social neglect and insufficient resources early in life and the ways these failures haunt us throughout the life course. Kyrié Carpenter - One of the co-founders of OldSchool, Kyrie has worked to shift the tragedy-only narrative of ageism and dementia through her work on the ChangingAging tour. Prior to ChangingAging, she worked with elders living in long-term care and she wrote her thesis on the Anti-Aging Myth in America. Lise Jamison - Lise is a licensed clinical social worker and Executive Director of At Home In Greenwich, a nonprofit membership organization that supports older folks in remaining at home as long as they choose to do so and that provides everything from community engagement to structures of support for individuals as they age. None of us are immune to ageism, especially older and younger individuals. In this episode, you will learn about: Ageism's far reaching implications, and how every person is simultaneously the victim of, and a perpetrator of ageist views, actions, etc. How ageism, being something that no one is immune to, creates inherent intersectionality in our identities for all of us. The importance of factoring an individual's entire life experiences into their identity, and not just their age. The critical role of autonomy in an individual's life experience and humanity. The insidious nature of ageism, and that abuse is typically perpetrated by those we know, rather than by strangers. The Chicago Children's Choir is amazing, too and they often collaborate with the CSO and Lyric Opera. All you need to know about the totally awesome Chicago Flag, and why it's better than most city flags.
