For film buffs, its import derives from its landmark status in the pantheon of Italian neorealism and political cinema. For anti-imperialists, its value comes from its hardnosed but sympathetic depictions of armed struggle. And for imperialists or right-wing strongmen, the film has been deployed as a realistic guidebook for counterinsurgency. The conversation also touches on funding models for open source projects in nonprofits, including support from individual donors, grants, and collaboration with governmental and private entities like NASA and Microsoft. Additionally, Max shares insights into the development of tools for better visualization of climate data, the impact of open source on climate action, and the challenges of ensuring software and data accessibility and reproducibility. [00:04:23] Max describes his role in leading open source initiatives at Carbon Plan. [00:03:23] The conversation shifts to the practical aspects of running a non-profit focused on open source projects, including funding mechanisms such as grants from NASA. [00:06:58] Max explains one of their projects that involve tools for visualizing large-scale climate data to assist cities in planning and decision-making. He mentions how these tools are designed to be accessible to both scientists and the general public. [00:08:13] There's a discussion about community engagement with their tools, noting that while many people reach out with questions or feature requests, there have been few contributions in terms of pull requests. [00:08:53] Max reflects on a collaboration with the Washington Post using their tools to inform public understanding of climate projections. [00:10:37] Max discusses the broader use of the tools by various agencies and the importance of transparency for reproducibility in research. [00:15:51] We hear about the size of the team at Carbon Plan which includes various roles. [00:16:28] Richard inquires about the funding landscape for open source projects at Carbon Plan. Max mentions the initial funding received through collaborations with NASA and Microsoft. He emphasizes the importance of ongoing government and agency support for both new tools and the maintenance of existing software. [00:17:51] Max talks about contributing back to open source communities, highlighting the practice of reporting bugs and engaging with upstream dependencies to improve tools. [00:18:38] The necessity of open source for transparency in climate solutions is discussed, contrasting with closed source companies that sell proprietary products to governments. Max argues for the importance of open source in ensuring accountability and better outcomes in climate solutions. [00:20:07] Max discusses the broader aspects of open resources, such as leveraging open standards, data, and hardware. He mentions collaborating with other organizations to tackle scalable computing challenges. [00:21:18] The conversation shifts to the environmental impact of computational work, with Max acknowledging the need for more efficient workflows and the broader implications of their organization's focus, which includes understanding and adapting to climate change impacts. [00:24:15] Richard and Max discuss the challenges of making data sets public in a market-driven environment. The sounds and reality of summer have set in, and many academics are running to the hills to take solace in the few months of reprieve to work on research, rethink their teaching, and more. Here at the Diversity Goes to Work podcast, we're hard at work on the next season of episodes, which will drop later this fall. In the meantime, on this our final episode of the season, we're going to share an episode of one of our sister podcast channels here at William & Mary. “Ways to Flourish” from William & Mary's Health and Wellness Initiative recently had our own Phil Wagner as a guest. The show addresses topics such as mental health and wellness, values of flourishing, and challenges that students, staff and faculty may face. Each episode of Ways to Flourish focuses on a wellness strategy, and this featured episode focuses on wellness as a business. Please enjoy, and we can't wait to be back with you again this fall. If you'd like to follow William & Mary's School of Business or learn more about the Diversity and Inclusion podcast and our programs, please visit us at www.mason.wm.edu.

Have you ever experienced any form of bullying or harassment in the workplace, which makes you wonder why you accepted that job in the first place? How exactly do you deal with workplace issues without sacrificing your future in the company? Today's episode is a bit different from the norm: Attorney Ryan, aka The Labor Lawyer & Working Class podcast host, and I are joining forces to deliver a joint episode. We borrowed Working Class's long-form, unfiltered interview style for this one, which was a lot of fun. We took turns discussing workplace issues we have experienced, and Ryan explained what the law says about them. Even though we both have some crazy stories from our past employment, I'm pretty sure many of you can relate to the things we go over. You might not feel safe discussing these things with others, but this episode will guide you in advocating for yourself when no one else will. We also get into some raw, funny, and vulnerable discussions about our past as well as the future of our country.Join me as I speak with Attorney Ryan Stygar, a former firefighter for Cal Fire and San Diego County. He spent several seasons as a desert rescue specialist and wildland firefighter. Firefighter Ryan later left the fire department to earn a law degree and graduated Magna Cum Laude from California Western School of Law. Now well-known across social media as The Labor Lawyer, Ryan is the author of various books across several genres and hosts the Working Class podcast, where he breaks down the most outrageous, engaging, and sometimes hilarious workplace lawsuits. Ryan's videos deliver insights on workers' rights issues in plain terms, demystifying what will and won't fly at work, and inspiring workers to self-advocate or find an attorney to fight on your behalf."Nothing you tick off on a resume, no job title is going to give you peace. It's not going to complete you. Yes, money will make you happier, it will give you peace of mind, but it will not fix that hole. And no job title is going to fix that hole if you're not sure who you are."- Attorney RyanIn This Episode:-How old is too old for the tech industry?-The pressure that comes with being around "smarter" people-Invisible Labor: Could this be the root cause of burnout in working women?-Can we cope with the current layoff situation in tech?-Where venture capitalists should be betting their money -What does an age-diverse team look like, and why does it matter?-What is psychological safety?-What makes a good leader?-What brought Attorney Ryan to Employment Law?-What is institutional inertia?-Is talking about your pay a terminable offense?-What does a hostile work environment look like?-Understanding the concept of allyship -How to advocate for yourself in the workplace-Why it's hard for people to recognize when they have a privilegeAnd much moreResources:-Fair Play Life Documentary: https://www.fairplaylife.com/documentary-HBR Research: The Average Age of a Successful Startup Founder Is 45: https://hbr.org/2018/07/research-the-average-age-of-a-successful-startup-founder-is-45-Ryan Stygar Books:
