In this captivating episode of Reading with Your Kids, host Jed Doherty takes listeners on an incredible journey through groundbreaking children's books that do more than just entertain - they educate, inspire, and challenge young minds. First up, we explore the remarkable story of J. Robert Oppenheimer through the lens of a middle-grade book that transforms complex historical narratives into accessible learning. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Kai Bird and co-author Eric Singer discuss their collaboration on "Oppenheimer and the Atomic Bomb," a powerful adaptation that introduces young readers to one of the most significant scientific figures of the 20th century. They delve into the ethical dilemmas of scientific discovery, the importance of understanding historical context, and how even complicated stories can spark meaningful conversations between parents and children. But the learning doesn't stop there! The episode shifts gears with Tina Cho, a kindergarten teacher who's revolutionizing children's science books by seamlessly blending STEM education with faith-based perspectives. Her book "God's Little Oceanographer" offers a unique approach to teaching children about the wonders of the natural world, complete with biblical references that inspire curiosity and wonder. What makes this episode truly special is its commitment to showing that learning can be fun, engaging, and transformative. Whether it's exploring the moral complexities of scientific innovation or discovering the magical world beneath the ocean's surface, these authors prove that children's literature is about so much more than just storytelling. What does it really mean to feel safe - in your body, your mind and your relationships? In this episode, I sit down with Rae, a psychologist who specialises in working with children, teens, and neurodivergent young people navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, and emotional regulation. Rae brings a rare mix of clinical insight and deep humanity to this conversation. We explore the complexities of growing up neurodivergent in a world that often misunderstands you, and how that experience can shape everything from identity to self-worth.We dive into the impact of early childhood trauma, what healthy emotional validation looks like, and why so many young people today are emotionally overwhelmed but under-supported. Rae also shares practical tools for parents, teachers and caregivers trying to create safer emotional environments for kids and we connect those ideas to some recurring themes from past guests who've spoken about their own inner child work, school struggles and misdiagnoses. This is a deeply compassionate and eye-opening episode about healing, understanding and giving young people what they actually need - not what we think they need.Don't miss out — hit FOLLOW or SUBSCRIBE to stay updated with our latest episodes! Guest Colleen Kelley Creating fun and accessible chemistry stories has been a labor of love for Colleen, as a retired chemistry professor and author of a series of kid's chemistry comic books. In 2023, the PBS short documentary, “Comic Book Chemistry,” was awarded an Emmy. Colleen holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from Penn State University and was a tenured professor with research expertise in environmental toxicology, medicinal chemistry, and chemistry education. Why This Episode Matters In this interview, Dr. Colleen discusses her journey from teaching college chemistry to developing "molecular literacy" programs for children ages 4-10. Inspired by her childhood experience with the Three Mile Island incident and challenges teaching college students, she created comic books with character-based storytelling to make chemistry accessible. She believes building neural pathways for understanding chemistry symbols early helps overcome traditional learning barriers and promotes lifelong scientific curiosity. Three Important Takeaways Chemistry education faces significant challenges, with a 50% failure rate among college students, often because they lack foundational understanding of molecular symbols and concepts. Teaching "molecular literacy" through storytelling and character-based learning engages young learners and creates neural pathways that make advanced chemistry concepts more accessible later in life. Chemistry education should extend beyond traditional classroom settings to help people of all ages (8-108) understand scientific concepts relevant to climate change, health issues, and daily life. Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming education, but when we think about AI in the classroom, we often picture high school or college students using it for research, coding, or content creation. But what about elementary school? Can AI be a valuable tool for our youngest learners? In Episode 260 of House of #EdTech, I sit down with Dan Gallagher, an experienced ed tech coach, to explore how AI can be integrated into elementary education. We dive into the best tools, practical applications, and strategies to ensure AI enhances learning while keeping students safe and engaged. Why AI Belongs in the Elementary Classroom Many educators hesitate to introduce AI to young students, concerned about privacy, ethics, and age-appropriate usage. But as Dan explains, AI isn't about replacing teachers—it's about enhancing personalized learning and supporting creativity. AI can act as a creative brainstorming partner, a writing assistant, and even a storytelling coach, helping students generate ideas and refine their work in ways that keep them engaged and excited about learning. And the best part? When used correctly, AI doesn't replace human interaction—it amplifies a teacher's ability to provide personalized feedback. Real-World AI Applications for Young Learners So, how does this work in a real classroom setting? Dan shares some inspiring examples: 1. AI-Powered Creative Writing & Storytelling Using AI chatbots like “Waffles” (a controlled, kid-friendly chatbot), students can interact with a virtual writing partner that helps them develop their storytelling skills. The AI can ask them engaging questions, suggest details, and even provide feedback on their writing. Example Activity: A student writing a story about a time traveler can ask the AI for historical facts, unique setting ideas, or character inspiration. The AI generates possibilities, but the student makes all the creative decisions! 2. Visual Learning & Digital Art with AI Tools AI-powered platforms like Canva's text-to-image generator allow young students to turn their ideas into visual representations. Example Activity: A class studying idioms might create posters using AI-generated images. If a student picks "It's raining cats and dogs," AI can generate an imaginative illustration, sparking discussion about figurative language. 3. Personalized Learning & AI Tutors AI can function as a virtual tutor, adapting to each student's needs. Platforms like Magic School AI provide instant feedback on writing assignments, while School AI can assist with generating lesson plans tailored to students' learning levels. Example Activity: A teacher might use AI to provide instant feedback on students' sentence structures, guiding them to refine their writing step by step instead of waiting for the teacher to get to each student individually. Addressing Safety & Ethical Concerns Of course, introducing AI in elementary education requires a responsible approach. Privacy, misinformation, and ethical use are all valid concerns. Dan and I discuss some best practices to keep AI use safe and effective: Use AI platforms with built-in content moderation (e.g., School AI, which ensures safe interactions). Set up AI usage in a controlled, “walled garden” environment where students can explore safely. Teach students critical thinking skills to evaluate AI-generated content—just because AI provides an answer doesn't mean it's always correct! Engage parents and school administrators by explaining how AI is being used responsibly in the classroom. Parents, in particular, may be hesitant, so educators should communicate the benefits while addressing concerns about safety. Tools like Common Sense Media can be great resources for helping families navigate AI responsibly. How Teachers Can Get Started with AI in Elementary Classrooms If you're an educator wondering how to introduce AI to younger students, here are some practical first steps: Start with simple AI tools like Google AutoDraw, which turns students' rough sketches into polished images. Use AI for brainstorming, not answers—help students see AI as a tool for sparking ideas, not just getting solutions. Model AI usage during lessons—demonstrate how you use AI to generate ideas or enhance lesson materials. Encourage creativity—have students work in groups to refine AI-generated content rather than taking it at face value. Final Thoughts: AI as a Partner in Education This episode is a reminder that AI is not just for older students or tech-savvy classrooms—it has the potential to unlock creativity, enhance engagement, and support personalized learning for young learners as well. AI won't replace teachers, but it can help them provide better support to more students—a true game-changer in today's classrooms.

Jonathan Arthur is the Executive Headteacher of Badock's Wood E-ACT academy and discusses the complexities and rewards of modern education. Jonathan articulates that while the educational landscape is more challenging than ever, it remains profoundly gratifying to enact positive change in students' lives. He emphasises the importance of cultivating a nurturing environment where aspirations are not merely raised but made achievable through support and commitment. He highlights the necessity of building a learning culture that fosters continuous growth for both educators and students. Jonathan passionately advocates for the integration of technology in the classroom, asserting that it should be embraced and used to equip children with the skills necessary for the future. Community engagement is important with schools serving as central hubs that inspire and empower their local populations. Jonathan's insights into behaviour management reveal his belief that all behaviour is a form of communication, often indicative of underlying discomfort or distress. He encourages educators to approach behavioral challenges with empathy and understanding, fostering an environment where students feel safe and respected. Education is not just a profession but a lifelong vocation that requires passion, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the betterment of each child's future. Takeaways: Education currently presents immense challenges, yet it remains an unparalleled vocation within society. The privilege of impacting lives and fostering aspirations in children is a daily reward for educators. Inspiring children to believe that their dreams are achievable is essential for their development. A culture of learning must be cultivated within schools, reflecting the continuous growth of educators. Technology should be embraced as an educational tool, promoting safety and future readiness among students. The importance of modeling expectations and being visible within the school environment cannot be overstated.
