Great duets have surfaced throughout the history of popular music, evoking a magic that one voice simply can't convey by itself. Duets between Bruno Mars and Rose ("APT.") as well as Kendrick Lamar and SZA ("Luther") have commanded the top of the charts in the past year, and you'll turn up other smash duets no matter how far you go back in time - Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus (2019), Lady Gaga and Beyonce (2009), Nelly Furtado and Timbaland (2009), Brandy and Monica (1998), Michael and Janet Jackson (1995) ... Keep going and you'll find everything from Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks to Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers to Elton John and Kiki Dee - even Frank and Tina Sinatra. This week the hosts of "How We Heard It" explore their favorite duets - by both the dream teams and the unlikely duos - and why they hit so well. And since these music vets can't resist throwing a dig now and then, they also look at the duets that underperformed and even some that flat out bombed. Not ever pairing is a match, you know.

If you've ever turned up the radio and belted out Footloose at the top of your lungs — or strutted around the house pretending you're Maverick flying a fighter jet to Danger Zone — then you already know the magic of Kenny Loggins, the undisputed king of the ‘80s movie soundtrack and a bonafide soft rock legend. But there's way more to Kenny Loggins than just toe-tapping anthems and blockbuster film credits. His story is pure classic rock gold, filled with sun-soaked California beginnings, powerhouse collaborations, and an uncanny knack for writing hits that stand the test of time.Born Kenneth Clark Loggins in Washington, Kenny grew up in the golden haze of Southern California's music boom. While his friends were trying to score surfboards, young Kenny was writing songs in his bedroom and dreaming up hooks that would one day echo through stadiums. He cut his teeth as a songwriter for hire, landing cuts with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.Kenny's story really kicks in when he teams up with ex-Poco and Buffalo Springfield member Jim Messina. Enter Loggins & Messina, the folk-rock duo that ruled the early ‘70s with feel-good harmonies and radio-friendly hits. These guys were the ultimate laid-back rock bros — they sold millions of records, filled arenas, and gave Kenny the confidence to step out on his own when the partnership ended in '76.When he did go solo, he doubled down. He scored a huge hit with “Whenever I Call You ‘Friend',” a dreamy duet with Stevie Nicks He co-write with Michael McDonald, “What a Fool Believes” — a song that scooped up the Grammy for Song of the Year in 1980.Then came the era that made Kenny a household name: the Soundtrack King phase. First up, Caddyshack. Next, Footloose — released in 1984, it shot straight to No. 1 and never left the pop culture dance floor. But Kenny Loggins wasn't done. Not even close. Two years later, the Top Gun soundtrack landed in his lap — and he strapped in for one of the most turbo-charged hits of his career: Danger Zone. But here's the thing — the Soundtrack King crown didn't box Kenny in. He's always been more than a hit machine. Albums like High Adventure and Vox Humana show his softer, more introspective side. Songs like “Heart to Heart” and “This Is It” gave us smooth sax solos and heartfelt lyrics. Kenny could be funky, he could be breezy, he could make you want to dance — or just chill on the porch.Through it all, Kenny stayed a collaborator at heart. He's jammed with Michael McDonald, Steve Perry, Stevie Nicks. He even dipped into children's music with Return to Pooh Corner. He's done Christmas albums, live records and acoustic sets. His catalogue is a masterclass in versatility.Today, Kenny Loggins is still out there, doing what he does best — playing sold-out shows for die-hard fans who never get tired of that big, warm, unmistakable voice. His book Still Alright: A Memoir tells the stories behind Kenny's legendary five-decade career and shares behind the scenes tales. The celebrated songwriter and chart-topping collaborator shares an entertaining perspective on his life and career as one of the most noteworthy musicians of the ‘70s and '80s and addresses his personal challenges and obstacles of his life and work -- including two failed marriages, a difficult but motivating relationship with the older brother for which “Danny's Song” is named, struggles with hisaddiction to benzodiazepines, and the revelations of turning seventy and looking back at everything that has shaped his music - as well as coming to terms with his rock-star persona and his true self.I hope you enjoy Kenny Loggins' candid conversation with me during this episode. To learn more about Kenny head ot his website: https://kennyloggins.com/

In this highly scientific and not at all petty episode of Past Tens, Dave and Milt throw down in the only arena that really matters anymore: pop culture debates. It's the Past Tens Riff-Off, where no sacred cow is safe, every cow is delicious, and every opinion is shouted like it's 1986 and you just lost your cassingles collection. The format? Timed debates. The stakes? Imaginary. The judgment? Left up to you, our dear listeners with way too much time on your hands. From Freddie Mercury vs. Mick Jagger (tight pants vs. tighter pants) to the eternal dilemma of whether a hot dog is a sandwich (it's not, calm down), Dave and Milt spar over music, movies, TV, theme park rides, game show hosts, and more. Along the way, you'll hear grunts, woos, awkward impersonations, and the occasional moment of clarity. Then you vote on our Facebook page to settle the debates because we're way too biased to be trusted. Timestamps for your convenience (or if you're hate-skimming): 00:00 – Welcome to Past Tens (you know the drill) 00:56 – Warning: Musical debates ahead 01:56 – The Riff-Off explained (kind of) 05:43 – Debate 1: Freddie Mercury vs. Mick Jagger (glam vs. strut) 11:26 – Debate 2: Pirates of the Caribbean vs. Space Mountain (eyeliner vs. nausea) 18:40 – Debate 3: Chrissie Hynde vs. Stevie Nicks (scowl vs. shawl) 24:20 – Debate 4: Top Gun ‘86 vs. Maverick ‘22 (volleyball vs. trauma) 29:52 – Debate 5: “Holiday Road” vs. “I'm Alright” (Lindsey Buckingham tries, Kenny Loggins is alright) 35:36 – Coin flips and shameless begging for votes 36:26 – Debate 6: Trebek vs. Sajak (intellect vs. wheel-spinning) 41:35 – Debate 7: “Woo” vs. “Uh!” (James Brown intensifies) 47:44 – Debate 8: Al Michaels vs. John Madden (miracle calls vs. turducken) 53:07 – Debate 9: “Come On Eileen” vs. “Turning Japanese” (one-hit wonderland) 58:45 – Final Debate: Is a hot dog a sandwich? Get ready to rock, roll, and raise your devil horns as the Vinyl Boyz dive into the electric soundtrack that taught a generation to never stick it to the man—the School of Rock Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Released in 2003 alongside the cult-classic film starring Jack Black, this album is a headbanging blend of classic rock anthems and original tracks that capture the spirit of rebellion and the soul of rock 'n' roll. From The Who’s thunderous “Substitute” and AC/DC’s “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)” to Jack Black’s powerhouse vocal performance on “School of Rock,” this album doubles as both a love letter to classic rock and a beginner’s guide to the genre. With tracks from Cream, Stevie Nicks, The Ramones, and Led Zeppelin (yes, they cleared a song for this!), the soundtrack honors the legends while igniting a passion for guitar riffs and freedom of expression. Whether you were a kid who wished Dewey Finn was your substitute teacher or just someone who believes rock will never die, this soundtrack hits all the right notes. Tune in as we kick off Week 2 of our 8-Week Soundtrack Summer, spinning one of the most fun and empowering compilations in movie music history. Let’s rock!!!!

What do David Bowie, Stevie Nicks, Keanu Reeves have in common? They are - by almost anyone's standards - "cool". A new psychology study has been making the rounds, and it tries to get to the bottom of a simple question: What does it mean to be a cool person? The authors widdled the answer down to six specific traits. Caleb Warren is a professor at the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona, and one of the authors behind this study, he chats to Jesse.

Fleetwood Mac's mid-'70s merger with the musical duo of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks changed the course of the band forever, propelling them to Top 40 mega-fame and cocaine-fueled excess. At the core of it all were rampant Rumours — both the album and the literal gossip. Breakups, divorce, drama: the same intra-band personal dynamics that stressed the group simultaneously led to the creation of one of the top-selling albums of all time. For Fleetwood Mac, Rumours was how the truth came out. And over 40 years later, there's still a lot that needs clearing up.

BT and Sal dive into the Mets' walk-up music from the previous day's game, dissecting the choices with humorous takes. Sal particularly lambasts Reid Garrett's choice of Cher's "Believe," arguing for more pump-up, rock-oriented anthems like AC/DC or Guns N' Roses, playfully debating whether it's "directly attaching a gender" to musical taste. They ponder alternative female artists for "Woman's Night" walk-up songs, including Nicki Minaj and Stevie Nicks, before veering into a lively argument about the perceived end of the game after Soto's strikeout and the ongoing debate of who's having a better season: Juan Soto or Pete Alonso.
We had a great time talking with KC Johns on this episode! KC told us about growing up at the Rodeo, learning guitar from her grandpa and growing into her vulnerability insongwriting! Born in Memphis, Tennessee and raised in Hernando, Mississippi, a small town along the Tennessee-Mississippi line, KC was surrounded by music for as long as she can remember. Named after KC and the Sunshine Band and raised on the greats like Led Zeppelin, StevieNicks, and Sheryl Crow. “My mom is a championship barrel racer, and my stepdadwas a bull rider,” she recalls. Although the energy of the rodeo was intoxicating for a young KC, so was making music. So, by 17, with her acoustic guitar, KC and her mom headed to Nashville to make her dreams of becoming a recording artist a reality. “I just took my guitar and started hitting all the clubs on Broadway asking people if I could sing on stage,” KC adds. One thing led to another, and ultimately, she landed an offer to work on Carnival Cruise Lines as a cruise ship performer. Having discovered and honed her stage legs at such a young age, KC was featured in Dolly Parton's “Coat of Many Colors” at Dollywood. However, the recording/touring artist life was calling once again, so KC took another leap of faith. “I moved to Nashville on a whim,”she explains. “I had nowhere to stay. I just packed up all my stuff and took a chance, sleeping on friends' couches and singing on Broadway again. Before I knew it, I started meeting incredible and influential people.” She made her way up the mainstream ladder opening for artists like Luke Bryan, Chris Young, Randy Houser, Trailer Choir and Morgan Wade. KC's now playing fairs, festivals and venues around the country. Check KC out here: Website: KCJohns.rocks IG: KCjohnsmusic Facebook: KC Johns TikTok: KCJohnsmusic YouTube: KC Johns

You grow up in a rough neighborhood in Brooklyn. You drop out of college. Your dad is your best friend but you don't want to work the docks like him. You're determined to “do something special.” You get a job sweeping the floor at recording studio. You get fired—twice. You'll do anything to work in the music business, including working on Easter Sunday. That's how you meet John Lennon. This is the day your life begins. You focus on being of service. You stay in the room and in the saddle. Bruce Springsteen teaches you what work ethic really means. You work with Tom Petty, Bono, Patti Smith, Stevie Nicks, and countless others. You'll produce hundreds of songs. You get restless, start a family, and start a record company. You get advice from David Geffen. You figure out your edge is producing the producers. You work with the absolute best, hand them the keys, and tell them to drive. You're a scrapper, you're persistent, you use fear as a tailwind, you keep the main thing the main thing, you work all the time, you put 100% into whatever is in front of you. You're described as fiercely competitive, insanely driven, and brilliant. You can never turn it off and you don't understand why everyone else isn't like that too. You start multiple companies, make billions of dollars, and tell the best stories when you go on podcasts after you retire. You are Jimmy Iovine. This episode is what I learned from rewatching the documentary The Defiant Ones and listening to these excellent interviews with Jimmy Iovine. ----- Ramp gives you everything you need to control spend, watch your costs, and optimize your financial operations —all on a single platform. Leland Sklar Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Happy Happy Joy Joy, that's spending time conversing with our good friend, Leland Sklar, who's made it all about the bass with everybody on everything, from Phil Collins, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Billy Cobham, Carole King, Hall & Oates, Crosby Stills, & Nash, Barbra Streisand, Joe Cocker, Toto, Lyle Lovett, and the list goes on and on, and on, and on… over 2500 + albums worth. I'm exhausted typing this. How the hell does he do it? An activist, Lee's stood up, spoken out, and paid the price innumerable times. A voice of clarity, passion, and reason, we got into it big time… the LA protests, the insanity surrounding them, the terrifying regime, our hope for Newsom, the unknowing of how to stop it, or how it will ultimately shake out… the fires, the transition back to living post the pandemic. Of course, we did talk music too. Respects to Brian Wilson and Sly Stone, Lee having played with the former, and influenced by the latter… how health has befallen so many heroes, Phil Collins, Linda Ronstadt, Billy Joel, Neil Diamond… and the wonder of Leland, currently doing 3 hr concerts with Lyle, still standing. That boy has good genes. Levis. The ongoing and upcoming big tour with Lyle and the sad putting aside, for now, of The Immediate Family. We talked about the lads, his brothers, Russ Kunkel, Danny Kortchmar, Waddy Wachtel, and Steve Postel, what makes that band so rockin' special, we talked about James Taylor, Peter Asher, who Lee holds responsible for launching his career, Phil Collins, and his amazingly talented son, Nick, Toto, Stevie Nicks, his book, Everybody Loves Me, which I'm blessed to be in, and Lee's marriage that has endured for 54 years and counting. Lee's one of the most universally adored musicians for his playing, his humanity, his humor, and his great big heart. I adore him. Who doesn't? Well, maybe a couple of fools on Capitol Hill. The man's a marvel. By 1975, Fleetwood Mac had already had many iterations and lineups. Started by veterans of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, early Fleetwood Mac were a blues based band with limited success on the US Billboard chart. By 1975, they had lost their main singer, lead guitarist and main songwriter in Bob Welch and remaining members Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood were on the search for a spark. While working at Sunset Studios, they heard the debut album from a duo that was also a couple, Buckingham Nicks. Though at first they were interested in hiring on Lindsey Buckingham as their singer and guitarist, they soon found out that he would only join if they took his singer/songwriter girlfriend Stevie Nicks as well. The rest is pop/rock history as the 1975 product of the five piece, Fleetwood Mac, would go on to sell over 7 million copies in the US alone. Now with three lead singers/songwriters in the band, they could choose the best of the best for inclusion on the record. While the choices for singles didn't always make sense (Warm Ways was the 1st UK single, World Turning wasn't released as a single), the chemistry did and the world heard harmonies that were unknown before. While Christine McVie held her own with lilting love songs (Warm Ways, Over My Head, Say You Love Me), Lindsey Buckingham offered more upbeat rockers like Monday Morning and the brooding So Afraid. However, the real star in the making was Stevie Nicks who turned the album's and the band's fortunes with her all-time classic Rhiannon. It really introduced the world to Stevie Nicks and the power she possessed in her voice and songwriting. She also offered the sweet Landslide, another track on this album that would go on to be a rock radio staple and part of their live show. The success of Fleetwood Mac gave them the opportunity to release Rumours in 1977, an album that would sell over 40 million copies worldwide. But this album laid the groundwork for Rumours and all the future success for the band for the next 50 years.
