When Stevie Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac, some critics dismissed her as frivolous, overly romantic, and lacking substance. In this highlight from my conversation with author Rachel Brodsky, we explore the sexist criticism Stevie faced early in her career, why her songwriting was often misunderstood, and how she ultimately proved her doubters wrong to become one of rock's most enduring and respected artists. This clip is taken from our discussion of Rachel's book Lessons & Lace: Everything I Know About Dreams, Heartbreak, and Magic I Learned from Stevie Nicks.

Wednesday, June 10, 2026Josh is back in studio for day three with Brock, and the show kicks off with the trending thread: “In the U.S., what should you never do?” The answers range from practical advice to very American warnings: never get out of your car during a traffic stop unless told to, never start a fistfight because someone might be carrying, never stand too close in line, never show up unannounced without a text first, and definitely never ride in an ambulance unless you are ready for the bill.Josh shares the hilarious story of getting pulled over at 16 and asking the cop if he could just pay the ticket in cash so he would not have to tell his parents. Brock follows it up with his own Tesla traffic stop story, claiming he was not speeding because technically the car was driving itself. The show also gets into plenty of “What the Heck” stories, including a California road rage attack involving a ukulele, mice spotted inside Gordon Ramsay's restaurant, 10,000 bottles of bourbon stolen from a Philadelphia warehouse, dynamite found inside a woman's old freezer, and a bizarre Alaska Senate race where two Republicans named Dan Sullivan are accusing each other of confusing voters.Brock and Josh also talk about random facts, including the origin of the Jaws theme, ancient Romans having great teeth, Voltaire gaming the lottery, Samoa skipping an entire calendar day, and why the Earth's core is hotter than the surface of the sun. Josh crushes the 7 AM Challenge with a round of Breakfast Bingo, proving he may be better at radio trivia than softball.Later, the guys cover softball season, Madonna's new music, Netflix's upcoming live-action Scooby-Doo Origins, Hulk Hogan's official cause of death, Stevie Nicks' major medical donation, and some genuinely happy news about a baby coyote rescued from cactus spines, an endangered California condor returning to Oregon for the first time in over a century, and promising cancer vaccine research. The show also dives into everyday things that used to be affordable but now feel like luxuries, including houses, concert tickets, babysitters, movie tickets, cable TV, home repairs, red meat, and vet care. Brock and Josh also talk about dangerous AI teddy bears, a gas station screw scam, and a real estate listing for seven acres in Hell, Michigan, complete with an ice cream shop, wedding chapel, and souvenir store. The episode wraps with laughter as medicine, the legendary “Ticklish Reuben” laughing song, celebrity gossip, Long John Silver's, Guitar Hero nostalgia, lake days, and Josh officially surviving his third straight morning back on the radio.

Returning Dig Me Out Union patron Josh Page is back from Australia with his second pick, and this one is geo-locked to his home country for most of the world. The Hummingbirdsformed in Sydney in 1986, signed to rooArt Records (the label founded by INXS manager Chris Murphy), and recorded their debut loveBUZZ in 1989 with producer Mitch Easter, the same man behind R.E.M.'s Murmur and Reckoning. The album hit ARIA #31, the single "Blush" reached #19, and they went Gold in Australia. Outside Australia, almost nobody has ever heard it.Jay, Tim, and Chip dig into the record with Josh, covering the intricate boy-girl vocal harmonies that draw comparisons to early R.E.M., The Lemonheads, Throwing Muses, and Belly; the punchy drumming that gives jangle pop some actual weight; and the Lemonheads connection most fans don't know: Robin St. Clair and Nic Dalton co-wrote "Into Your Arms" during this era, Evan Dando recorded it, and it became the biggest hit of the Lemonheads' career.Timestamps: 5:05 Band history and Mitch Easter connection | 6:09 The Lemonheads origin story | 14:19 "Alimony" | 19:17 "Get On Down" | 28:51 "House Taken Over" (and the unauthorized house remix) | 38:48 "If You Leave" | 42:08 VerdictsThe hosts split 2-1, and the community voted 80% Better EP. A visually stunning, definitive tribute to rock's most enigmatic, enduring, and stylish icon, Stevie Nicks, written by New York Times bestselling music journalist Annie Zaleski. This beautifully illustrated book goes beyond the glitter and shawls to explore the raw artistry, resilience, and magic that define Stevie Nicks's five-decade career. From singing "Are You Mine" with her grandfather in Phoenix to becoming the first woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice, Stevie's story is as sweeping and bold as her stage presence. Stevie Nicks in 50 Songs covers it all: her early musical roots, folk and country influences, first guitar at sixteen, and fateful harmony with Lindsey Buckingham on "California Dreamin'"-a moment that launched one of rock's most complicated partnerships. This is not just a music biography. It's a deep dive into Stevie's powerful songwriting and mythmaking. The book analyzes iconic tracks like "Rhiannon," inspired by Welsh mythology, "Landslide," written during a pivotal moment in her relationship with Buckingham, and "Stand Back," created with an uncredited synth assist from Prince. It covers breakout Fleetwood Mac hits like "Dreams" and "Gold Dust Woman," along with cult classics from the Buckingham Nicks era and her solo work, like "Edge of Seventeen." The book also offers surprising insights into her personal life: her friendships, her struggle with addiction, her political engagement, and advocacy work. Nick's unmatched fashion legacy shines through these pages, too. A dedicated section explores her famous shawls and capes, her di Fabrizio boots, the mystical Rumours look, and her real-life wardrobe inspirations. Beyond the music and style, Stevie Nicks in 50 Songs dives into the artist's cultural impact, like her pop mentorship of artists Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, and more.Featuring rare photos, extensive track breakdowns, and revealing quotes, Stevie Nicks in 50 Songs is not just a celebration of a career. It's a celebration of a woman who twirled through heartbreak and fame and emerged bolder than ever.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Don and Dude dig into two self-titled records that turned personal identity into radio gold and lifelong fan obsessions. From diva-defining ballads to California soft-rock confessions, the guys trace how these albums relaunch careers, reset expectations, and prove that sometimes the simplest album title hides the messiest feelings. The AlbumsMariah Carey – Mariah Carey (1990)A tightly controlled debut that introduces a once-in-a-generation voice through lush ballads and new jack swing bounce, balancing radio-ready polish with glimpses of the struggling songwriter behind the spotlight.Fleetwood Mac – Fleetwood Mac (1975)A reborn band finds its classic lineup and sound, blending Lindsey Buckingham's urgency, Christine McVie's melodic warmth, and Stevie Nicks' mystical storytelling into a surprisingly cohesive California rock pivot from their blues roots.Diggin' AlbumsKacey Musgraves – Middle of Nowhere (2026)Reflective, rootsy country with spacey edges, full of quiet, late-night songs about isolation and finding yourself again out past the glow of the city.Van Halen – Van Halen (1978)A swaggering, high-voltage hard rock debut that turns Eddie Van Halen's guitar pyrotechnics and David Lee Roth's big personality into one nonstop, party-starting calling card.American Football – American Football (LP4) (2026)Veteran emo craftsmen stretch out with piano, vibraphone, and brass around their signature clean guitars, turning midlife anxiety and emotional scar tissue into slow-burning, late-evening mood pieces. The Haunted Youth – Boys Cry Too (2026)Dreamy indie rock that cranks the guitars and leans into vulnerability, using bittersweet hooks to argue that sadness and softness belong in the story for boys and men, too.Follow & Support Follow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing with another music obsessive who still loves hearing whole albums front to back.“What's in a name? The 2026 Met Gala delivered chaos: Kendall, Kylie, Hailey Bieber and Kim K were all apparently doing a nip slip and we watched the whole thing unfold on the big screen. Bruce Isaacs stopped by with his Watcha Watching picks and Apex is at the top of the list right now. Listeners called in with their best life hacks including dressing the kids in tomorrow's clothes before bed, buying everything on The Iconic on Afterpay and returning what you don't like, and pouring sand on the yellow line at the beach. Today's Glossys revealed Stevie Nicks did a duet with Sabrina Carpenter which is the crossover nobody saw coming. We debated whether kids actually have to share their things with strangers at the park, a mum influencer said absolutely not, and an eight year old named Jasmine called in to say she shares everything except her sandwich. And scientists have found that men who gift flowers don't go bald, which is either very convenient or a conspiracy by the floral industry.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Chase Sue Wonders attended her first-ever Met Gala in a lilac Alexander McQueen gown inspired by ancient Roman wall murals she encountered on a trip to Pompeii. Her “Fashion is Art” look was layered with Tiffany jewels she says cost more than her life and a bodysuit underneath to keep the entirely sheer skirt camera-appropriate. The evening's highlights were countless. Emily Blunt freed her from a hedge after her dress got caught.. A bathroom visit resulted in an encounter with Tessa Thompson, who was loudly ripping off her synthetic nails and throwing them in the trash. On the dance floor during Stevie Nicks's surprise performance, Sui Wonders caught up with A$AP Rocky, a recent collaborator, who then stepped on the train of her dress. Hosts Chloe Malle and Chioma Nnadi brought their own reports from the night. Nnadi sat beside Margiela creative director Glenn Martens, who was fielding a steady stream of Rihanna fitting updates on his phone. Malle wore a persimmon gown by young American designer Colleen Allen, loosely inspired by Frederic Leighton's Flaming June. All three agreed: first stop after the gala, the GQ party; second stop, wherever the night leads. Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices

The rock group Fleetwood Mac is one of the most well-known and beloved in music history, but it certainly wasn't that way when they started in 1967. Before finding international success with the addition of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks in 1975, they had numerous personnel changes at the guitarist position. In fact, before Lindsey, they changed guitarists five times in seven years, as they ran the gamut from hardcore British blues to contemporary rock to breezy L.A. soft pop. In his latest article for the Strange Brew, Scott G. Shea tells the story of this magnificent band's development through its guitarists. He describes how they arrived at the band, what they contributed, and why they eventually broke down. If you're interested in discussing the story of Fleetwood Mac, I hope you'll consider inviting Scott G. Shea, a leading music historian and the author of the best-selling book “All the Leaves Are Brown: How the Mamas & the Papas Came Together and Broke Apart,” to your program. Scott can discuss what went wrong with the five guitarists who preceded Lindsey Buckingham and why Buckingham was able to make it work, at least for a little while.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Fleetwood Mac’s mid-’70s merger with the musical duo of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks changed the course of the band forever, propelling them to Top 40 mega-fame and cocaine-fueled excess. At the core of it all were rampant Rumours — both the album and the literal gossip. Breakups, divorce, drama: the same intra-band personal dynamics that stressed the group simultaneously led to the creation of one of the top-selling albums of all time. For Fleetwood Mac, Rumours was how the truth came out. And over 40 years later, there’s still a lot that needs clearing up.
