What does it mean to recover a vintage faith—and why does the church need it today? In this episode of the Sound Words Podcast, Dr. Cory Marsh discusses his book Recovering a Vintage Faith and explains why Christianity doesn't need to be reinvented, but recovered. He addresses the pull toward theological minimalism and novelty-driven spirituality, the loss of historic convictions in modern evangelicalism, and how historical theology helps believers remain faithful to Scripture while engaging today's culture.Dr. Marsh also clarifies the difference between biblical faith and mere traditionalism, and offers practical steps pastors and believers can take to cultivate a faithful, rooted Christianity. This episode includes an affiliate link. Marsh, a TEDx Speaker, Wealth Advisor, and transformational leader who lived through a season of losing nearly everything, financially, emotionally, and personally… and rebuilt from the inside out through faith, truth, and alignment.   Curtis teaches something powerful:  You can't always control the storm around you… But you can choose who you become within it.   If you're in a hard season, this episode will meet you right where you are.

Turn Boring Sales Pitches Into Conversations That Close

Sales Gravy: Jeb Blount

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 15, 2026 43:24 Transcription Available

You are on slide 34 when the CFO's phone buzzes. She glances down. The VP to her left is nodding, but you can tell he checked out ten minutes ago. You know this pitch cold. You have rehearsed it. You built the deck. You covered every feature, every capability, every objection. And still, you are dying up there. You spent weeks on this presentation. None of it matters because everyone in that room has already sat through the same pitch from three other vendors this month. “Pitching sucks,” says Danny Fontaine, author of Pitch, on an episode of the Sales Gravy Podcast. “It sucks for the people doing it because we get so stressed out, and we spend weeks doing mountains of work. Meanwhile, there is a whole audience who has just as bad of a time as us because they have to sit through an hour of 100 PowerPoint slides and they're bored.” He is right. The audience suffers just as much. They sit through identical presentations, back to back, trying to remember which vendor said what. Both sides leave exhausted. No one wins. There is a better way. Effective sales pitch techniques don't rely on slides. They create engagement, tell stories, and turn monologues into conversations that actually move deals forward. Why Traditional Pitches Fail The standard pitch follows the same predictable pattern. Company overview. Capabilities. Case studies. Pricing. Questions at the end. Every competitor uses the same structure. That means you are asking your prospect to choose between nearly identical presentations. When everything looks the same, decision makers default to price or familiarity. Your carefully crafted message gets lost in the noise. You are treating the pitch like a presentation when it should be a conversation. You are trying to inform when you should be persuading. Experience Beats Information In 1979, a small advertising agency called Allen Brady and Marsh (ABM) competed against industry giant Saatchi & Saatchi for the British Rail account. ABM's founder, Peter Marsh, knew he couldn't win by playing it safe. When the British Rail executives arrived for the pitch, no one answered the door. They rang the buzzer three times before it finally opened, with no one behind it. The receptionist ignored them while filing her nails. The waiting area was filthy. After a while of being dismissed, the chairman stood up to leave. That is when Marsh burst through the doors and said, “Gentlemen, you have just experienced what your customers go through every single day. Shall we see what we can do to put it right?” ABM won the account. And it worked because the executives didn't just understand the problem. They felt it. Most sales pitches fail because they ask buyers to care before they are emotionally engaged. Information alone doesn't create urgency—experience does. Start With Them, Not You Pitches always start the same: ‘Thanks for your time. Here's our agenda. Let me tell you about our company.' Your prospect stops listening after the first sentence. If you want engagement, start with a question. Ask what matters to them. Ask what would make the time valuable. Ask what problem they are trying to solve. Before you show a single slide, say something like, “Before we start, what would make this conversation worth your time today?” Or, “What is the biggest challenge you are facing with this right now?” Those questions do three things immediately. They show respect. They give you intelligence. And they turn the pitch into a conversation from the first minute. This works even better over Zoom, where attention is fragile and distractions are everywhere. When you ask early questions, you pull people in instead of competing with their inbox. Stories Create Memory The most powerful stories aren't pulled from case studies. They come from real life. Every meaningful achievement involves obstacles. Those obstacles contain lessons. Those lessons connect directly to the challenges your prospects are facing. A story without relevance is just noise. A story with a clear lesson becomes a lever. A consultant once shared a story about buying a secondhand Lego set. She started building it, only to discover key pieces were missing. After hours of searching for replacements, she had to start over. When pitching a complex implementation, she said, “That taught me something. At the beginning of any project, we have to make sure all the pieces are in the bag.” That story worked because it made preparation tangible. It made risk visible. It connected emotionally and logically. If the story does not clearly support the point you are making, don't tell it. Ask Before You Lose Them Most salespeople cling to their script even when they can see the room drifting away. They are afraid of losing control, so they keep talking. That is how you lose the deal. Don't wait until the Q&A to ask questions. Sprinkle them throughout your pitch to keep your audience engaged and the conversation alive. Ask if you're hitting the mark, what they want to explore deeper, and what matters most to them. When you ask questions, you aren't giving up control. You are gaining it. The person asking the questions is always in control of the conversation. Emotion First, Logic Second Buyers like to believe they are rational. They are not. Emotion drives decisions. Logic justifies them. If you want someone to care, you have to make them feel something. Frustration. Relief. Possibility. Urgency. That is why the British Rail experience worked. Marsh didn't argue that customer service was bad. He made them experience it. The feeling came first. The logic followed. Once a buyer is emotionally engaged, they start looking for reasons to say yes. They look for data to support the decision they already want to make. This is why information-first pitches fall flat. You are asking people to care before you have given them a reason to. Create the emotional connection first. Then give them the facts. When the Room Goes Cold Even the best sales pitch techniques don't work every time. Sometimes the wrong people show up, there is a fire you didn't know about, or your message just doesn't land. When that happens, don't push harder. Pivot. Call it out. Ask what would be more valuable. Acknowledge the moment instead of pretending it is not happening. That level of honesty builds trust. It shows you are there to solve a problem, not deliver a performance. Why This Matters Your prospect didn't show up to be entertained or to be bored. When you give them an experience they didn't expect, you separate yourself from every competitor running the same tired deck. You become memorable. You become relevant. You become human. The pitch that feels risky is usually the one that wins. The personal story. The direct question. The willingness to have a real conversation. Because the alternative is being forgotten the moment you leave the room, no matter how many slides you showed. Want to take your pitch from forgettable to unforgettable? Download the FREE A.C.E.D. Buyer Style Playbook, which shows you exactly how to read your buyers, adapt your approach, and turn every conversation into a deal-closing opportunity.

ISAIAH 35Even the wilderness and desert will be glad in those days.   The wasteland will rejoice and blossom with spring crocuses.Yes, there will be an abundance of flowers   and singing and joy!The deserts will become as green as the mountains of Lebanon,   as lovely as Mount Carmel or the plain of Sharon. There the Lord will display his glory,   the splendor of our God.With this news, strengthen those who have tired hands,   and encourage those who have weak knees.Say to those with fearful hearts,   “Be strong, and do not fear, for your God is coming to destroy your enemies.   He is coming to save you.”And when he comes, he will open the eyes of the blind   and unplug the ears of the deaf. The lame will leap like a deer,   and those who cannot speak will sing for joy!Springs will gush forth in the wilderness,   and streams will water the wasteland. The parched ground will become a pool,   and springs of water will satisfy the thirsty land.Marsh grass and reeds and rushes will flourish   where desert jackals once lived. And a great road will go through that once deserted land.   It will be named the Highway of Holiness.Evil-minded people will never travel on it.   It will be only for those who walk in God's ways;   fools will never walk there.Lions will not lurk along its course,   nor any other ferocious beasts. There will be no other dangers.   Only the redeemed will walk on it.Those who have been ransomed by the Lord will return.   They will enter Jerusalem[a] singing,   crowned with everlasting joy.—-Sorrow and mourning will disappear,   and they will be filled with joy and gladness.PRAY:Father, we thank you for this time of joyful waiting. May the hope and joy of this season fill our hearts and make us living signs of your love for a world that hungers for your peace. Immanuel, God with us. Amen

It's the first “class” of the recent Try This series on giving. What's really going on inside the brain of an altruist? Why do altruists care so much more for a stranger who needs help? Why are they so willing to give away a kidney? In this episode, host Cristina Quinn explores what it means to be an altruist with Abigail Marsh, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Georgetown University. Together, they break down how altruists view their own actions and how others can become more altruistic too.Marsh offers insight into what scientists know about altruists and shares surprising findings from her own research. She also tells us how you can build the muscle of giving more in simple steps that fit your lifestyle.Read more about Marsh's work on altruism here. Research Highlights and Innovations Shaping Our Field

EMS Today

The world of prehospital medicine is constantly evolving, driven by new research, technological advancements, and a shared commitment to improving patient care and provider well-being. As EMS professionals, staying informed about these developments goes beyond a professional obligation; it is an opportunity to improve our practice, champion our profession, and ultimately make a greater impact on saving lives. In this article, we will explore some of the latest research findings that are reshaping our field, from workplace culture to cutting-edge technology.   The Culture of Care: Supporting EMS Providers Our work is demanding, both physically and emotionally, and the culture within our agencies plays a critical role in our well-being. A recent systematic review in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health revealed that many EMS providers avoid using organizational mental health services due to stigma and a perception that these programs lack genuine care. The study emphasizes the need for person-centered support and a cultural shift that normalizes seeking help as a sign of strength (Johnston et al., 2025). This cultural component also impacts retention. Another study in the same journal found that agencies with collaborative, team-oriented "clan" cultures had significantly lower turnover rates compared to those with rigid or chaotic structures. For leaders in EMS, fostering a supportive environment is not just about morale. It is a strategic imperative for retaining skilled clinicians (Kamholz et al., 2025).   Professional Recognition: Breaking Barriers Across the globe, paramedics are striving for recognition as integrated healthcare professionals. A qualitative study in BMC Health Services Research identified common barriers, including outdated legislation, inconsistent regulation, and insufficient funding. While the pandemic temporarily highlighted our capabilities, the momentum has waned. The study calls for targeted policy reforms and investments in education and leadership to solidify our role in the broader healthcare system (Feerick et al., 2025). Physical Demands and Injury Prevention The physical toll of our work is undeniable. A scoping review in Applied Ergonomics confirmed that musculoskeletal injuries, particularly to the back, are rampant in EMS. Tasks like handling stretchers and patient extractions are among the most strenuous. The review also highlighted fitness disparities, with male paramedics generally showing more strength but less flexibility than their female counterparts. These findings underscore the need for targeted injury prevention programs and realistic physical standards to keep us safe throughout our careers (Marsh et al., 2025).   Advancements in Cardiac Arrest Care When it comes to cardiac arrest, every second counts. A study in Resuscitation reinforced the value of bystander CPR, showing that dispatcher-assisted CPR significantly improves outcomes for untrained bystanders. For those with prior CPR training, acting independently yielded even better results. This highlights the importance of public CPR education alongside dispatcher support (Tagami et al., 2025). On the scene, our interventions matter immensely. Research in The Journal of Emergency Medicine found that for traumatic cardiac arrest patients, aggressive interventions like prehospital thoracostomy can be lifesaving (McWilliam et al., 2025). Meanwhile, a study in Critical Care Medicine revealed that extracorporeal CPR (ECPR) significantly improves outcomes for patients with refractory ventricular fibrillation, emphasizing the need for early transport to specialized centers.   The Role of Technology in EMS Technology is poised to revolutionize EMS, from dispatch to diagnosis. A study in The American Journal of Emergency Medicine demonstrated that large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT could prioritize ambulance requests with remarkable accuracy, aligning with expert paramedic decisions over 76 percent of the time. This proof of concept suggests that AI could one day enhance resource allocation in dispatch centers (Shekhar et al., 2025). On the diagnostic front, machine learning is opening new possibilities. For example, a study in Bioengineering showed that analyzing photoplethysmography waveforms could estimate blood loss in trauma patients, offering a non-invasive way to guide resuscitation (Gonzalez et al., 2025). Similarly, research in Medical Engineering & Physics explored using multidimensional data to differentiate ischemic from hemorrhagic strokes in the field, potentially enabling more targeted prehospital care (Alshehri et al., 2025).   Addressing Disparities in Care Equity in EMS is a cornerstone of our profession, yet recent studies highlight troubling disparities. Research in JAMA Network Open found that ambulance offload times were significantly longer in communities with higher proportions of Black residents (Zhou et al., 2025). Another study in JAMA Surgery revealed that Black and Asian trauma patients were less likely to receive helicopter transport compared to White patients. These findings are a call to action for all of us to examine our systems and biases to ensure equitable care for every patient (Mpody et al., 2025).   Looking Ahead The research discussed here represents just a fraction of the advancements shaping EMS today. From improving workplace culture and injury prevention to leveraging AI and addressing systemic inequities, these findings have real-world implications for our protocols, training, and advocacy efforts. As EMS professionals, we have a responsibility to stay informed and apply these insights to our practice. Since taking effect in 2020, the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) has supported nearly US$2 trillion in annual trade, providing a stable framework for the duty-free movement of qualifying goods. Today, however, stricter rules of origin, evolving tariff policies, and geopolitical pressures are reshaping supply chains and raising new risks for manufacturers. As CUSMA approaches its 2026 joint review, manufacturers across North America are facing growing uncertainty in an increasingly complex trade environment. We're joined by Falak Kothari, Manufacturing Industry Leader at Marsh Canada, to discuss key findings from Marsh's report, Trade Policy Outlook for North American Manufacturing. Find out what manufacturers need to know as the 2026 review approaches, how tariffs and trade rules factor into day-to-day operations, and how companies are strengthening resilience through smarter risk management, supply chain strategies, and insurance solutions.Sponsored By:

What's really going on inside the brain of an altruist? Why do altruists care so much more for a stranger who needs help? Why are they so willing to give away a kidney? In this episode from the Washington Post's “Try This” podcast, host Cristina Quinn explores what it means to be an altruist with Abigail Marsh, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Georgetown University. Exhausted from late diagnosed autism masking as an adult? In this episode of Adulting with Autism, host April chats with Wendela Whitcomb Marsh (Dr. Wendy), award-winning author, TEDx speaker, and US Autism Association board member, on neurodivergent self-acceptance, workplace accommodations, and advocacy for high-masking autistic adults—especially women/girls/trans/ND folks. After 40 years in special ed/psychology, Dr. Wendy founded (and sold) Adult Autism Assessment & Services, drawing from her autistic family (late husband + 2/3 adult kids). Her Adulting While Autistic series (Independent Living, Dating, Relating, Parenting, Working While Autistic) and SWAN Church (Scripture & Worship for All Neurotypes) empower underserved voices. Key insights: Adult vs. child autism: Masking hides symptoms (e.g., routines for eye contact/socializing); exhaustion from "faking normal." Late-dx challenges: Women/trans/non-binary often missed (3-6x overlap with autism); bullying/shame leads to self-doubt. Workplace/family support: Frame needs as productivity wins (e.g., noise-canceling headphones/WFH); believe autistic voices—no "faking." Clinician tips: Read autistic authors, seek ND-affirming pros; self-ID valid if no paper needed (for disability/accommodations). Advocacy ahead: Boa constrictor squeeze (hard times)—stay safe, speak out; churches need inclusivity (SWAN as model). For autistic young adults unmasking or parents advocating, Dr. Wendy's optimism shines: "Nothing wrong with you—world's not built for you." Offense vs Maryland Starts at :51 It doesn't feel good to just beat up on Maryland the week before The Game. Dave explains a soft and gooey snack for all of you to enjoy. Bryce was okay! He's worked on a nice seam route with an arc to Marlin Klein that he didn't have before the bye. And a dig route! There was one bad pass which was a tough throw to make anyways. Can he go and win The Game? Probably if the defense can do enough. This was never going to be a challenge for the offensive line but they exceeded expectations anyways. The Ohio State game might be a bridge too far, though. Kuzdzal is a step down from Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall but he's got some juice. They succeeded on wedge! Andrew Marsh almost completed the Odell Beckham?? He's a star going forward. Marlin Klein hurdled a fool, Goodwin had a few catches. It was nice of Maryland to just run into themselves and let Michigan do what they wanted.  2. Defense vs Maryland Starts at 34:09 There was an opening drive touchdown with various guys being offsides again, but then there wasn't much until the backups came in. Pleeeease do not be rotating the back-seven against Ohio State all game. Derrick Moore has 11 sacks, imagine if he played more! Ernest Hausmann did not travel, Cole Sullivan was back (and possibly a little rusty). This performance didn't build confidence in holding Ohio State to 10 points again, a lot of Maryland receivers were running open. Brandyn Hillman had another good game, maybe that mini-suspension was the best thing for his career. He was even directing players into position. Some of Maryland's drops count as triple drops. There's just not much interior rush from this defensive line, maybe play Barham at linebacker against OSU so you can blitz him. Does Wink actually call plays without knowing or caring which personnel are out there? This year you don't have the two best defensive tackles in America and you can't bait Ryan Day into running into a six man box.  3. Hot Takes, Game Theory, and Special Teams Starts at 56:08 Takes hotter than yours truly after he got through the hot takes intro and had to re-do them because the Sklars dropped out of the call. Brian broke Zvada. Chase Taylor gets +4 on the onside kick recovery, that did not feel good. There was no punting from Michigan so we don't have to complain about punting. Marsh had some nice punt returns?? End of first half time management was less than ideal, Goodwin lined up in the wrong spot and they should've called timeout. Stop jumping offside! The late hit by Brandt was a weak call, so was the one on Bryce Underwood. Every replay angle was field-level and somehow they're contradictory?  4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac Starts at 1:19:43 Oregon 42, USC 27 A close-ish looking boxscore but Oregon scored 28 first half points. Oregon has figured out some things after the Indiana game, they're in the 99th percentile in opportunity run rate. They're starting to look like the championship team they were hoping to be.  Iowa 20, Michigan State 17 Iowa pulls out a classic game that they don't deserve to win. MSU QB Alessio Milivojevic punted three times. Michigan State's 8 game losing streak is tied for the 2nd longest, the program record is 10. Tickets for MSU vs Maryland at Ford Field after the game are free!  Northwestern 38, Minnesota 35 An offensive explosion game! Northwestern wins at Wrigley for the first time in 8 attempts.  Wisconsin 27, Illinois 10 Neither team gets to 300 yards of offense. This was the first time all season that Wisconsin scored in the first and second quarter.  Penn State 37, Nebraska 10 The Grunk throws 12 times for 181 yards, that'll do it. Nebraska goes 1 of 6 on 4th down. Who is Penn State's number 1 coaching candidate?  Washington 48, UCLA 14 The Huskies continue to play without some of their stars but still blew out UCLA Ohio State 42, Rutgers 9 Ugh MUSIC: "Feel It Again"—Winyah "Drugs"—Philharmonik Live from NPR Tiny Desk "DBZ"—Your Old Droog and Method Man “Across 110th Street”—JJ Johnson and his Orchestra

Things Discussed: HOOPS Craig and the Half a Head story vis a vis Tarik Skubal. Aday Mara holy crap. He was last year's on-off numbers while playing 37/45 minutes. When he was on the floor Wake Forest was 27% at the rim. M needs to figure out the rest. Loosening balls but not converting them to turnovers. Have three bigs on the floor and none know how to box out because they were the rebounding alphas. Three Bigs? Don't think it's going to work because Morez Johnson taking a three in the flow of the offense isn't going to work. The point of Yaxel is to make him a four, so you're effectively using Johnson at small forward. Maybe if you also make Mara a Wolf-level assist guy? They won a game when they shot 16% from three; if they can be 33% from three and have Mara's defense it's over. Don't overreact to Lendeborg's start: injured hand and Wake was a weird team that didn't have big tradeoffs from switching only 6'7" guy on Lendeborg to another. Loose balls: not boxing out when they're not boxing out, the way they play is everyone can be aggressive on their man and you have a behemoth, so nobody's facing the ball when he knocks it loose. Defense needs to be more aggressive: You saw Gayle got it; he overplayed on the perimeter and got some turnovers because if they cut behind you you're still covered. Wake's first shots sucked. LJ's thing is he goes in the lane, but this team doesn't have a lot of perimeter shooting. Tschetter's defense doesn't match well with this team, but he can get you threes. Was hoping he could be on the court with Johnson and Mara but he can't unless Morez can take threes. Trey McKenney was a revelation on defense. He knows where to be, has that length. Can they run offense without Cadeau on the court? Cadeau also needs to be more careful with the ball—deserved six turnovers. FOOTBALL Northwestern Preview: Low-scoring game. They're good on defense, they're interception-prone, they're best at putting two TEs on the field and running OZ and Duo; Michigan might be able to play two-DTs. When they do well they get movement on the front. Caleb Tiernan: Always loved Northwestern. If we're in a match of who can out-1950s the other give me Michigan's OL and Jordan Marshall. If M gets an explosive they can look for it in the RPO game: NWern can't go to their 3rd safety and their SS is a 6'4"/220 hybrid guy. Maybe get him against Marsh? Barham at edge or linebacker? I vote linebacker, because that makes them tell you how they're going to set up. TONY PETTITI IS GOING TO END THE BIG TEN Trying to pass their their "pay-day loan" (thank you Regent Bernstein) over the objections of Michigan and USC is the way they get Michigan to leave when the Grant of Rights expires. When all of these are mid-majors in 20 years remember this moment, and the idiots trying to solve today's problems with a cash infusion that future fans will have to pay for.
