Martha and the Fairy is a singer and songwriter from London. She is inspired by the likes of CBGB's era Blondie, Blond Ambition era Madonna, The Strokes, Blur, YUNGBLUD and Phoebe Bridgers. She has been singing all her life, forming her first band at the age of 7, but she started taking songwriting seriously when she was 15. Since then, she has performed at venues across London such as The Bedford and The Camden Club and released her first single Someone That I'm Not in September 2023. I've brought on an ICON, in more ways than one, to help me with this episode. Ron Radvinsky is a founding member of Madonna's official fan club and fanzines “Like A Fanzine” and “ICON.” He shares his Madonna journey, his almost dance career after a dance audition for Blond Ambition, and his chance run-ins with the queen herself. Run also gets “vulgar” as we chat about Madonna's grand re-entrance into the top 100 for the 5th decade with her Weeknd collaboration and his thoughts on the upcoming tour. Come sit at the “popular” table with us as we get together. Guest: Ron Radvinsky IG: /ron_radvinsky Music Credits: "Glamorous Etoile" by Kinemesis Music

Viktor Devonne presents: PASSION PROJECT, a series devoted to artists and creators behind really neat stuff. The latest episode is ENCYCLOPEDIA MADONNICA, with the author Matthew Rettenmund, who published his first edition in 1995, and then again in 2005, and the latest September of 2022. A literal a-z on the subject of global superstar Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone, born in Bay City Michigan and subsequent queen of the pop world (and one of our last remaining icons who began their domination in the 1980s), the book is a mammoth collection of trivia, fascinating factoids, speculation, and commentary on the star's body of work, love life, activism, narcissism, fragility, strengths, and missteps along the way. One of the most "fun" icons to be a fan of, there are just as many heights (Blond Ambition! Evita! Hung Up!) as fails (Sean Penn! Body of Evidence! TikTok?) and projects that must be re-evaluated (Bloodhounds of Broadway! Sex! Bedtime Stories!) after loads of criticism was heaped upon them during their initial run. Rettenmund is one of the great masters behind maintaining perspective on Madonna's legacy whilst keeping a clear head on the present day. The result in the definitive encyclopedic compendium, in the latest and greatest form with exclusive interviews, culled quotes, forgotten lore, and necessary snark. Matt talks about how the initial publication almost never happened, his favorites and less favorites (what beloved M track is he less than delighted by? You may gasp.), and how he managed to get a snapshot with the legend herself (and what she said to him!) during the tour and press events he experienced and compares notes with Viktor on whether or not she really should try another movie. Dennis is joined via Zoom by author and blogger Matthew Rettenmund to talk about the brand new revised edition of his book Encyclopedia Madonnica, which is just like it sounds, a 700+ page guidebook for all things Madonna. He talks about the starting work on the first edition of the book back in 1995, what makes this new edition special, the process of choosing the photos and why he chose to make a hardcover edition for the first time. He also recalls his first exposure to Madonna, his massive collection of Madonna memorabilia, the multiple times he's encountered her in person and the time he finally got to get a photo with her and the sassy thing she said to him. Dennis shares his own Madonna touchstone moments, like the failed Blond Ambition dance audition that started his writing career and getting to interview her for Bedtime Stories and asking her if she ever had sex to her own music. Other topics include: getting to interview Madonna's longtime publicist Liz Rosenberg and Desperately Seeking Susan director Susan Seidelman for the new edition, the Madonna biopic that may or may not ever happen, what it'll be like when she passes, why we want some of our divas to be rude and what working on the book and being a Madonna fan generally has meant to him in his life. https://www.boyculture.com/

In 1990, seven young male dancers - 6 gay, 1 straight - joined Madonna on her most controversial tour: The Blond Ambition World Tour in support of her fourth studio album, Like a Prayer. Both on stage through 57 lavish shows and in the iconic film Madonna: Truth or Dare, the seven talented dancers - Luis Camacho, Oliver Crumes, Salim Gauwloos, Jose Gutierez, Kevin Stea and Carlton Wilborn -- showed the world how to express yourself. 25 years following Blond Ambition, STRIKE A POSE, from directors Ester Gould and Reijer Zwaan, reveals the truth about life during and after the tour, when the seven men were ambassadors to the world on behalf of the LGBTQ community during the height of the AIDS epidemic. This acclaimed documentary portrait is a dramatic tale about overcoming shame and finding the courage to be who you are. Nominated for a Teddy for Best Documentary Film at the Berlin International Film Festival, STRIKE A POSE, being re-released by Film Movement in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of Madonna: Truth or Dare, also captured the Jury Prize for Best LGBTQ Film at the Key West Film Festival and was a Top 20 Audience Favorite at Hot Docs. Madonna's Blond Ambition & Girlie Show Tour Dancer, Carlton Wilborn, steps Behind The Rope. One of the Iconic Seven chosen by Madonna herself to be part of the Record Breaking Blond Ambition Tour and subsequent Game Changer Film (the Real World and “Reality TV” did not exist!), Truth or Dare. After a brief foray into Carlton's early career in dance, where he attended classes with Michelle Obama, we get right into how he was hired as one of Madonna's Seven Blond Ambition Tour Dancers - the audition process, the answering machine message from M, the wild night out with Madonna, and the ultimate tour offer. In true Madonna fashion, she was the first, not only in the “reality” format but the first to show gay men with full actualized lives on screen. Carlton reflects about the 1980s and 1990s Madonna of yesteryear, what the country was like at the time with the initial onset of AIDS, and how he was able to perform night after night living with his own secret of being HIV positive. He also discussed what it was like to be on a tour that the Pope tried to ban, that was one of the highest grossing tours at that point to date, and which Rolling Stone lists as one of the 50 greatest of all time. Carlton details all the late night talks with Madonna, the after parties, and her advice. He talks about the constant parade of Celebrities backstage coming to pay respects and bow to Queen M. Carlton describes how he heard from Madonna years later when it was time to go back out on the road for The Girlie Show Tour. Carlton discusses the differences in himself, the production, the choreography, the music, and last, but certainly not least, in Madonna from The Blond Ambition Tour in 1990 to The Girlie Show Tour in 1993. Carlton discusses his relationship with Madonna after the end of that tour and how in 2016 Hollywood came a knocking, this time in the form of the phenomenal documentary Strike A Pose about the lives of the 7 male dancers who joined Queen M on her Blond Ambition Tour. Madonna's Blond Ambition & Girlie Show Tour Dancer, Carlton Wilborn, steps Behind The Rope. One of the Iconic Seven chosen by Madonna herself to be part of the Record Breaking Blond Ambition Tour and subsequent Game Changer, Ahead of Its Time Film, Truth or Dare staring the Queen of the World, Madonna. After a brief foray into Carlton's Chicago born childhood and early career in dance, where he attended classes with Former First Lady Michelle Obama, we get right into how he was hired as one of Madonna's Seven Dancers to Tour the World with her on her Blond Ambition Tour. Carlton spares no detail in the audition process, the answering machine message from M herself, the wild night out with Madonna to prove if he could hang and the ultimate tour offer. Carlton describes at what point he realized the Blond Ambition Tour was also being made into one of the first musical documentaries of its kind, at a time when The Real World was not even on TV yet and the words “Reality TV” were not in anyones vocabulary. In true Madonna fashion, she was the first. A pioneer if you will, not only in the “reality” format but one of the first to show gay men being, well, human beings with full actualized lives on screen. Carlton reflects about the 1980s and 1990s Madonna of yesteryear, what the country was like at the time with the initial onset of AIDS, a word the President said was only for “other people”, how he was able to perform night after night living with his own secret of being HIV positive - a secret he was not yet willing to share. He also discussed what it was like to be on a tour that the Pope tried to ban for being too controversial, that was one of the highest grossing tours at that point to date, and which Rolling Stone lists as one of the 50 greatest tours of the last 50 years. Carlton describes how accessible Madonna was and how she really treated her dancers off camera and it is not at all what one would think. He details all the late night talks with Madonna, the after parties, her advice, her vision for both the Blond Ambition Tour as well as Truth or Dare. He talks about the constant parade of Celebrities backstage coming to pay respects and bow to Queen M. Carlton talks about what life was like when The Blond Ambition Tour ended and his feelings when three of The Blond Ambition Tour Dancers, his colleagues, sued Madonna, her production company Boy Toy Inc., Miramax and Propaganda Films for “invasion of privacy, fraud and deceit, and misrepresentation claiming they did know parts of their lives were being filmed. We also discuss whether he understands the full cultural impact the film has had on society being a “reality” film before anyone knew the words “Reality TV” (yes, Truth or Dare was prior to even MTV's The Real World) and was one of the first films to show the full actualized life's of gay men as humans and not just sex objects. Switching gears, Carlton describes how he heard from Madonna years later when it was time to go back out on the road for The Girlie Show Tour. Carlton discusses the differences in himself, the production, the choreography, the music, the other dancers and last, but certainly not least, in Madonna from The Blond Ambition Tour in 1990 to The Girlie Show Tour in 1993. Carlton discusses his relationship with Madonna after the end of that tour and how in 2016 Hollywood came a knocking, this time in the form of the phenomenal documentary Strike A Pose about the lives of the 7, 6 living and one sadly deceased, male dancers who joined Queen M n her controversial Blond Ambition Tour. (S5, EP 1) As we wrap up #AAPIMonth and begin #PrideMonth Longtime dancer, artist and model Kevin Stea kicks things off as my 1st guest for this Season 5's "Our Becoming: An Asian LGBTQ experience" on The Banh Mi Chronicles Podcast. This interview was recorded in mid March right after the Atlanta shooting. Kevin is of biracial, mixed Chinese American descent who danced for Madonna's worldwide hit tour, "The Blond Ambition" in 1990. He would go on to perform as an actor, model, and choreographed for many other icons, and still dancing today. We talked about the disconnect he felt in not being able to connect to his Chinese heritage, and his father, also of Chinese descent, who was largely absent during his childhood. We discussed about what it meant being queer during the volatile AIDS / HIV crisis during the 80s and early 90s which wreaked havoc on the LGBTQ commmunity. I got Kevin to talk about his experience working with some of the biggest icons as a dancer / choreographer, and being in a white-led entertainment industry that was not very welcoming to Asian Americans. Check out Kevin on his IG @kevinstea or his FB at Kevin Stea /// Bio: After only 18 months of training, Kevin was hired as associate choreographer to legendary choreographer Vincent Paterson for Madonna's Blond Ambition Tour. He quickly became dance captain and dancer for the World Tour, for which both the movie “Madonna: Truth or Dare” and the video for “Vogue” were made, and performed in Madonna's iconic performance on the 1990 MTV Music Video Awards. Soon after, he was working with Gloria Estefan, Prince, and Michael Jackson, among others, as associate choreographer/dancer, and won the Grand Prize on the television show “Star Search.” He modeled for major designers like Jean Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler, Tommy Hilfiger, Romeo Gigli and Exté, and worked with celebrity photographers David Lachapelle, Matthew Rolston, Peggy Sirota, Herb Ritts and Santo D'Orazio, at a time when Asians were not accepted in the industry. He has choreographed for other artists such as Britney Spears, Cher, David Bowie, Rihanna, Beyonce, Ricky Martin, among others. Kevin performed in movies such as Sister Act 2, as Daryl in Showgirls, as Swifty the Rake in Newsies and as Goldman Girl Yum Mee in The Birdcage, for which he won a SAG award. In 2016, he reunited with his fellow dancers from Madonna's Blond Ambition Tour for the critically-acclaimed documentary, "Strike A Pose." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/banhmichronicles/support

In this episode of our Secrets and Lies series we've delved into the archive to bring you incredible stories of secrets hidden in music. Advertising executive Juan Carlos Ortiz grew up in Colombia, a country which has suffered decades of armed conflict and has long been among the major producers of illegal drugs. Juan Carlos ran an award-winning campaign against the addictive qualities of cocaine, and made powerful enemies of FARC guerillas who relied on the drugs trade. A few years later, Juan Carlos was asked to get a secret message to hostages being held by FARC rebels in the middle of a jungle. And he chose music as his disguise. Ata Kak's musical career would never have got off the ground had it not been for the help of a little white lie. But when the Ghanaian musician released his first record in 1994, things stalled again - he sold only a handful of copies. The story would have ended there had it not been for an American student who made a chance discovery at a market stall in Ghana several years later. Salim Gauwloos became famous dancing with Madonna on her iconic Blond Ambition tour. Madonna used the tour to promote freedom of sexuality and sexual health. All of this made a young Salim feel extremely uncomfortable. The reason he was so anxious was that he was harbouring a secret. Do you have a story about how a secret or lie changed a life? An exclusive interview with Madonna's background singer and dancer, Donna Delory. This part explores the era from the Who's That Girl tour to Blond Ambition and Donna's first solo LP.
Released as a single in 1990 and performed as the closing song for Madonna's Blond Ambition tour, it's the single-that-never-was for many territories where it was held back in favour of Vogue. Nonetheless, Keep it Together is one of the highlights from the Like A Prayer album and now we learn more about its recording and hear those individual instruments clearer than ever before.
We're back at it with DJ Joey chatting about GHV2, 93:99, Celebration (AKA: Trash), and we of course go off topic and provide thoughts on the Blond Ambition tour and lack thereof of an official release (except a laserdisc). I also include some corrections to mistakes made or questions unanswered in previous episodes. A dive into the most famous of all Madonna's remixes - and a listen to the changes made for the single remix, too. We try to examine why Madonna would become so smitten with this version that it would be what she took on the road for 1990's Blond Ambition tour.
Alright divas, this week Allen interviews current Las Vegas teacher and former costume designer to the stars, Joe Kennedy (@josephak13) and we talk about the Queen of Pop herself: Madonna! Get ready, because Joe is an expert, and has been since his mom played "Papa Don't Preach" on repeat while she was pregnant with him. A diva of divas, she has 300 million records sold, $1.2 billion in concert sales, and she's even banned from Hamilton. Can you even?? Joe reminds us to watch Madonna: Truth of Dare, the behind the scenes documentary of the Blond Ambition Tour. She took risks putting queer culture front and center. She was the first person banned from MTV because of it. And excommunicated from the Catholic Church! JP2 was not having it. Madonna is a beautiful contradiction in her music videos of being saintly and slutty. We love to see it. And never forget she went to U Mich on a dance scholarship. Step ball changed her way to the top! Joe then dives deep into her international influences and asks her to be a bit more thoughtful in her artistic choices. Is it appropriation or is it appreciation? Finally, Joe defends Madge's acting - she's got a limited range but isn't dead behind the eyes, okay, Lupone!? Lastly, Joe thanks Madonna for all she's done for the community. All the way from London, author Matthew Todd joins Dennis via Skype to talk about his beautiful new coffee table book Pride: The Story of the LGBTQ Equality Movement. Matthew talks about how the book came about, some of the unsung heroes he writes about in the book, the similarities between the US and the UK in terms of the movement and how moments in pop culture like gay characters on soap operas and shows like Will and Grace helped move the mainstream culture forward. Matthew also talks about being profoundly moved by Princess Diana's AIDS activism as a teen, recalls how one journalist at the time called her "the patron saint of sodomy" and shares the power of the photo of Diana that appears in the book. Matthew also tells the story of how he was able to score Prince William for the cover of Attitude when he was editor there...and how and why William used the f-word on the record. Matthew and Dennis share what Pride month means to them and how that's changed over the years. Other topics include: the beginnings of P-Flag, the insane state of the world, writing about hot-button gay issues like chemsex and open relationships, Matthew's favorite memory of Elton John, how awesome Madonna was circa Blond Ambition, the British and American Queer as Folk, the sweetness of Love Simon, why the Spice Girls matter, the private George Michael mini-concert he got to attend, his favorite Pride dance song, and that time he drunkenly thanked Sir Ian McKellen for his activism while standing in the bathroom line at the gay bar Heaven. www.matthewtodd.net

It's documentary week at The Spark Parade. How intellectual! I had a chat with author Niven Govinden about his love for a coupla queer classics: Paris Is Burning (Jennie Livingston's legendary examination of ball culture in late 1980's Harlem) and Truth Or Dare (Alek Keshishian's 1991 film which famously followed Madonna's Blond Ambition world tour). Sounds delightful, doesn't it? Well, guess what? It IS delightful. And you'll also hear my musings about the benefits of broad representation in art. It's your lucky day. Madonna: Truth or Dare (1991) - Documentary following singer Madonna on her controversial Blond Ambition tour in 1990.
Madonna: Truth or Dare (1991) - Documentary following singer Madonna on her controversial Blond Ambition tour in 1990.
(Snippet taken from an article written by Lynn Hirschberg for Vanity Fair magazine in 1991) In 1990, Forbes estimated Madonna's pre-tax income to be $39 million (and her earnings since 1991 at $125 million); her Blond Ambition tour sold out in twenty – seven cities; her concert on HBO was the highest-rated non-sports event ever on that network; and her albums went double-platinum. “But at what cost?” asks Christopher Ciccone, who was the art director of Madonna's Blond Ambition tour that same year. “People who don’t think the controversies and the press affect her are wrong. She doesn’t work up a strategy for all this attention. It’s just who she is and what she does. And there is definitely a cost.” Which isn’t to say that Madonna has any real regrets. Or, to he exact, “I have so many,” she says, “and I have none. I wish I hadn’t done a lot of things, but, on the other hand, if I hadn’t I wouldn’t be here.” She pauses. “But, then again, nobody works the way I work.” It’s that discipline, matched with talent, drive and ambition, that propels her: “I have an iron will,” she says, eating her Caesar. “And all of my will has always been to conquer some horrible feeling of inadequacy. I’m always struggling with that fear. I push past one spell of it and discover myself as a special human being and then I get to another stage and think I’m mediocre and uninteresting. And I find a way to get myself out of that. Again and again. My drive in life is from this horrible fear of being mediocre. And that’s always pushing me, pushing me. Because even though I’ve become Somebody. I still have to prove that Somebody. My struggle has never ended and it probably never will.” Does this sound like ANYONE YOU KNOW? I've included a link to the full article in the supplementary materials section for those who'd like to read further.
