Meryl Streep ate a Gummi Bear out of her hair. Roseanne Barr fell flat on her face while holding a cheese plate. Ed Begley, Jr. showed his butt. And audiences stayed away. Yes, 1989's black comedy She-Devil struggled to find its audience upon release and didn't even earn back its budget. But now, decades later, was this tale of romance and revenge just misunderstood? Were we really prepared to see a funny pre-Prada Streep? Were we all hoodwinked into thinking this was a Meryl vs Roseanne showdown when they only have 2.5 scenes together? And, unlike Begley's “Bob,” does this Susan Seidelman film deserve a second chance? The Old Roommates grab a strainer and sort it all out through their middle-aged lens. Join them! One of the least explored subgenres in cinema is the short-lived, radical category known as "punk film." This genre emerged in response to the rise of punk music in the late 1970s, which served as a counterpoint to the hedonistic glam of disco and dance music—a genre I also enjoy. However, punk's emergence was more than just a musical trend; it was a political reaction against the shift toward right-wing and neoliberal policies in Britain and America. Punk embraced a "DIY (Do It Yourself)" ethos that challenged the notion of expertise as an elitist barrier to creative expression. With this DIY spirit, anyone could participate and create without needing to be a skilled musician or filmmaker. Notable examples of punk cinema include Susan Seidelman's *Smithereens* (1982), Allan Moyle's *Times Square* (1980), Julien Temple's *The Great Rock and Roll Swindle* (1980), and Gregg Araki's *The Doom Generation* (1994). However, the film that arguably stands as the "Citizen Kane" of punk cinema is Alex Cox's *Repo Man* (1984). This visionary film captured the punk ethos of early 1980s Los Angeles. *Repo Man* is smart, bizarre, hilarious, and cosmic—making it one of the standout films of the underground cinema of that decade. Join Azed and Tom as they explore this remarkable work by the often-overlooked Alex Cox.

She's a film director who made a movie called Desperately Seeking Susan. It's a caper that revolves around mistaken identity starring Rosanna Arquette and a then unknown Madonna. Seidelman went on to direct She Devil with Meryl Streep in her first comedic role. But Hollywood is a tough place for women directors. Nora Ephron came on the scene and directed Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail in the 1990s. And 25 years later Greta Gerwig had a big hit with Barbie. Seidelman eventually started working in TV, directing the pilot episode of a series that was to become a cultural icon, Sex and the City. We talk about sexism, ageism and the challenge of staying on top of your game. “Now What?” is produced with help from Steve Zimmer, Lucy Little and Stacey Maltin. Audio production is by Nick Ciavatta.

Starting out in the mid-70s, a time when few women were directing movies, Susan was determined to become a filmmaker. She longed to tell stories about the unrepresented characters she wanted to see on screen: unconventional women in unusual circumstances, needing to express themselves and maintain their autonomy. Her fearless punk drama, Smithereens became the first American indie film to compete at Cannes, and smash hit Desperately Seeking Susan led to a four-decade career in film. Seidelman continued to shape American pop culture well into the nineties, directing the pilot of the iconic TV series Sex And The City, focusing her sharp lens on the changing place of women in American society and helping to fundamentally reshape our self-image in ways that are still felt today.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Susan Seidelman Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson I've been desperately seeking Susan Seidelman for 14 years… some things, some Susans, are worth waiting for! Loved every second with this film maverick whom I've admired since we were both kicking around Greenwich Village, kinda “bad girls,” who looked, good. There's so much common thread (well, except the whole success thing), as Susan points out when we traded books, do all Jewish girls from New York have the word “Mother” in their subtitles? That's how I finally got the affirmative nod. Susan's memoir, Desperately Seeking Something: A Memoir About Movies, Mothers, and Material Girls, drops on June 18th, a few days after my mother's birthday. Fitting. I've been flying through it, unable to put it down, and rewatching Susan's classics. How many times have I seen Desperately Seeking Susan, Madonna's first and best film role, how Susan fought for her, Roseanna, how she struggled a bit with her, lessons learned, and success beyond imagining. Smithereen's, Susan's first film, was also the first American Independent feature to be screened at Cannes. We get back and front story here. Casting Wren, some hardships turned into blessings. Making Mr. Right... her casting and why… and She Devil - which featured Meryl Streep's first comedic role, and Roseann Barr's first feature. Meeting Meryl for the first time… Sex and The City, where Susan directed the pilot and the first 3 episodes… with Susan, so many firsts! We didn't even get to the latter today (but, it's in the book!) there were so many films to mine! We talked about how she came to film and squeezed in a few more… Cookie, Musical Chairs, and The Boynton Beach Club, her mother's original idea which Susan honed and ran with. All of Susan's films break ground, spin things around, and are ahead of their time. Both Wren (Susan Berman) in Smithereens and Susan (Madonna) in Desperately, open the films with selfies for starters… I mean, come on! Susan Seidelman is important. As a woman, a filmmaker, and now as an author. Treat yourself! Stream her films and race to Amazon and preorder her fabulous memoir https://bit.ly/3RjlWqbn you'll get the heart and soul behind each of her treasures. Susan's writing is open, vulnerable, and as riveting as her movies. On series 8, episode 7 of Paid in Puke, we're thrilled to bring you this deep cut gem from 1987: “Making Mr. Right”. Susan Seidelman's retro-futurism genre bender stars the incomparable Ann Magnuson, as well as Glenne Headly, and Laurie Melcalf. We were lucky enough to snag Ann for an interview!   We discuss pop culture's timeless obsession with A.I.. This movie presents so many themes that were later explored in more serious properties like “Her”, “Ex Machina”, and “Westworld”. It also depicts a rare character in cinema (especially in 1987): a nuanced working woman who isn't driven by her need to find and keep a man. The film is also stylish, hilarious, and truly unique!   Throughout our discussion, we include clips from our interview with Ann, who discusses working in Miami, bringing her prodigious London and NYC underground experience to a Hollywood rom com, and why the time is right for a film that celebrates good will and charm.   Listen to the entire interview in our bonus episode and buy the special edition blu-ray of Making Mr. Right - out now, including commentary from Seidelman and Magnuson!   Ann Magnuson on instragram Ann Magnuson's website/store (including SIGNED Making Mr. Right blu-rays)! Clips from Ann's incredible interpretation of David Bowie's “Moonage Daydream” peppered throughout

Some may say that football and politics don't go together but anyone watching yesterday's matches might think otherwise. The Iranian team declined to sing their anthem & Wales fans showed their support for LGBTQ+ rights last night by wearing rainbow bucket hats. So how useful are these shows of solidarity? Laura McAllister, the ex-Wales footballer & Beth Fisher, freelance sports reporter & ambassador for the LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall discuss. Why is it that we so often struggle or fail in long term relationships? We're not talking about major marriage infractions such as infidelity, domestic abuse or gambling away the family's savings. We're talking instead about unremarkable everyday behaviours that help to end a marriage. Guests are Joanna Harrison, author of Five Arguments All Couples (Need to) Have and why the washing up matters and Matthew Fray, author of This is how your marriage ends: A hopeful approach to saving relationships. Yesterday Radio 4's Brain of Britain saw its first ever all-women final. 2022 champion Sarah Trevarthen joins Emma Barnett to discuss her victory, as well as her experiences undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer while taking part in the show. Becky Howell, the co-founder of feminist quiz zine Quizogyny, also joins us to talk about the rise of women in quizzing. Susan Seidelman is an American film director, whose ground-breaking feature film Desperately Seeking Susan is considered one of the 100 greatest films directed by a woman. Susan joins Emma to discuss why the film is still relevant today, how she witnessed Madonna's rise to success and her long career as a female director. Dennis is joined via Zoom by author and blogger Matthew Rettenmund to talk about the brand new revised edition of his book Encyclopedia Madonnica, which is just like it sounds, a 700+ page guidebook for all things Madonna. He talks about the starting work on the first edition of the book back in 1995, what makes this new edition special, the process of choosing the photos and why he chose to make a hardcover edition for the first time. He also recalls his first exposure to Madonna, his massive collection of Madonna memorabilia, the multiple times he's encountered her in person and the time he finally got to get a photo with her and the sassy thing she said to him. Dennis shares his own Madonna touchstone moments, like the failed Blond Ambition dance audition that started his writing career and getting to interview her for Bedtime Stories and asking her if she ever had sex to her own music. Other topics include: getting to interview Madonna's longtime publicist Liz Rosenberg and Desperately Seeking Susan director Susan Seidelman for the new edition, the Madonna biopic that may or may not ever happen, what it'll be like when she passes, why we want some of our divas to be rude and what working on the book and being a Madonna fan generally has meant to him in his life. https://www.boyculture.com/
