Show me that smile again...As we wrap Women's History Month, it's our pleasure to welcome the great Joanna Kerns to The Batter's Box for Episode 77! Kerns' career in show business now spans 45 years both as an actress and director. She got her first big break when she starred as Maggie Seaver in the hit sitcom Growing Pains, and has since gone onto serve as a pioneer for female directors with nearly 70 television directing credits to her name and counting. In 2020, she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy for her work on Hulu’s Light As A Feather and was part of the team of directors nominated for a GLAAD Award on Dinsey's High School Musical: The Series. Kerns also currently sits on the Board of the Directors Guild of America and serves on its Ethics Committee.  Kerns has kept quite busy in 2021, having recently lent her directing talents to High School Musical: The Series. This week, she joins host Al Malafronte to discuss her recent work on the show, as well as her role in the progress that female directors have enjoyed in the entertainment industry. We also had quite a bit of fun strolling down memory lane, as Kerns happily shares some amazing behind-the-scenes stories from her time on Growing Pains, her thoughts on why the show still stands strong today and even touches on her work in the baseball community when she directed Pitch on FOX. As someone who actually launched their performing career via the stage, Kerns remains a tremendous theatre fan, and talks about some of her favorite nights on Broadway which include three trips to Hamilton! As an advocate for empowering and uplifting the next generation of artists, Kerns is honored to have been recently invited to be an Advisory Board member for Notes for Notes, Inc., a national nonprofit providing youth free access to pro recording studio settings, producers, and creative outlets through the creation of recorded music. There's a reason why Kerns' work has endured for so many years, and that very much shines through in this wonderful conversation! Hey Seaver Fans, Angela Bowen here, the host of Show Me That Smile Again: A Growing Pains Podcast. For the month of September the character I choose to focus on is MAGGIE SEAVER. I picked S6E17: Eddie, We Hardly Knew Ye, which aired on January 30, 1991. In this episode Maggie's father makes a surprise visit to the Seaver household only to drop a major bomb on Maggie, with the news that he is dying. Guys and Gals, I'm not going to lie this is a sad, sad episode, and I do break down a couple times and talk about my dad's battle with cancer and his passing. If this is triggering in anyway feel free to skip it. This episode delivers an important message of how short our time on earth really is and the things we don't want to think about like losing our parents and everything that comes after. Also Joanna Kerns (Maggie Seaver) does an amazing job in this episode as it calls for her to really bring forth the emotion of losing a parent and she knocks it out of the park with her acting. Next month's chosen character for the month of October is going to be JASON SEAVER in S3E13: A Reason To Live, which aired on December 8, 1987. In this episode Jason Seaver feels dispirited and useless until he meets a sad, scruffy young girl who needs his help. Looking Back On My Wonder Years: A Wonder Years Podcast

Welcome to the Weekend, Seaver Fans! Angela Bowen here, the host of Show Me That Smile Again: A Growing Pains Podcast. Here's this week's episode S1E6: Superdad which aired on October 29, 1985. In this episode working mother Maggie Seaver begins to feel edged out of her children's lives and excluded from family affairs by none other than husband Jason. I gave this episode 3 out of 5 Leather Jackets. 1. Mike with the dog swap with Ben and Wendy. 2. Jason and Carol’s talk about her dilemma with her crush Kevin. 3. Ben and his dancing and impression of Billy Idol. The things I didn’t like 1. Maggie’s hurt over being edged out of her kid’s lives with Jason being the go to parent for the moment, she takes her aggression out on him. It just seemed to drag on to long even though it was Plot A of the episode. 2. Carol and her he/she said teen drama over her crush Kevin. This Melissa said that and Kathy said this after Jason first told her that these girls are just spreading untrue gossip and she should just stick to the source if she wants to know how Kevin really feels and thinks about her. Nothing more than teenage girl drama that always seems like the end of the world to them. Next week on the podcast I will be covering S1E6: Mike's Madonna Story, which aired on November 5, 1985. In this episode a Madonna-styled teenage seductress wreaks havoc in the Seaver household when she appears at their doorstep in some rather revealing clothing looking for Mike and plotting to make him her next seduction. Hey Seaver Fans, Angela Bowen here, the host of Show Me That Smile Again: A Growing Pains Podcast. Here is S1E2: Springsteen Airdate: October 1, 1985. In this episode Mike is mercilessly teased by his friends after he and Jason attend a Bruce Springsteen concert and a TV interviewer captures Jason's overzealous show of affection for his son. Episode Rating: 3/5 Leather Jackets I felt Plot B with Carol’s Save the Mice Campaign was a bit over the top. I realize the other kids needed something to do, but this just made me irritated with Carol. Not to mention Eddie and Boner’s first appearance left a bad taste in my mouth. They come off as major dickheads and just plain annoying. Next week we jump ahead to S1E5: Superdad, which aired on October 29, 1985. In this episode working mother Maggie Seaver begins to feel edged out of her children's lives and excluded from family affairs by none other than husband Jason. We also get a guest appearance by future Wonder Years Alum Olivia d'Abo as Wendy a girl who Mike is dog sitting for. Let me just say from memory her character is not all there and very un Karen like. Looking Back On My Wonder Years: A Wonder Years Podcast
