"Growing Pains" is an American television sitcom that originally aired from 1985 to 1992. The show revolves around the Seaver family, led by psychiatrist Jason Seaver (played by Alan Thicke) and his journalist wife Maggie (played by Joanna Kerns), who raise their three children:  Mike (played by Kirk Cameron), Carol (played by Tracey Gold), and the youngest, Ben (played by Jeremy Miller). The series follows the Seaver family as they navigate the ups and downs of everyday life, dealing with typical teenage and family issues while living in Long Island, New York. Themes of love, friendship, adolescence, and parenting are explored throughout the show's seven seasons. Is "Growing Pains" a timeless classic like we remember or are we just looking through the lenses of nostalgia? Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Looking Back On My Wonder Years: A Wonder Years Podcast. Today, I covered a TV Movie based on a True Story, Captive from 1991, starring Joanna Kerns (Growing Pains), John Stamos (Full House), Barry Bostwick, Chad Lowe (Life Goes On). Movie Synopsis: Paul and Kathy Plunk move away from Phoenix, Arizona, so that their baby daughter may grow up in the healthy Oregon. They buy a small motel in a lonesome mountain region... - it could be idyllic, but their first guests are the wanted criminals Knott and Frost, who are on flight from the police. They need money, so they assault the Plunks, force them to withdraw all their money from the bank. But the nightmare just begins: they take the Plunks and their baby with them as hostages. I remember catching this movie on Lifetime when I was 15 or 16. I was already a fan of Joanna Kerns and John Stamos and was interested to see them take on a different role than the ones I grew up watching them play. The acting in this movie is amazing. John Stamos is so far removed from his Uncle Jesse role in this movie, you definitely see him in a different light here. I always wanted to cover this movie on the podcast at some point because I felt everyone should know the range of these two actors, I wasn't familiar with anything Barry Bostwick or Chad Lowe had done prior to or after this, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but they were amazing in their roles too. I plan to cover some other TV Movies in the future for the podcasts that I watched growing up. I hope you enjoy this episode and check the movie out on Youtube. Show me that smile again...As we wrap Women's History Month, it's our pleasure to welcome the great Joanna Kerns to The Batter's Box for Episode 77! Kerns' career in show business now spans 45 years both as an actress and director. She got her first big break when she starred as Maggie Seaver in the hit sitcom Growing Pains, and has since gone onto serve as a pioneer for female directors with nearly 70 television directing credits to her name and counting. In 2020, she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy for her work on Hulu’s Light As A Feather and was part of the team of directors nominated for a GLAAD Award on Dinsey's High School Musical: The Series. Kerns also currently sits on the Board of the Directors Guild of America and serves on its Ethics Committee.  Kerns has kept quite busy in 2021, having recently lent her directing talents to High School Musical: The Series. This week, she joins host Al Malafronte to discuss her recent work on the show, as well as her role in the progress that female directors have enjoyed in the entertainment industry. We also had quite a bit of fun strolling down memory lane, as Kerns happily shares some amazing behind-the-scenes stories from her time on Growing Pains, her thoughts on why the show still stands strong today and even touches on her work in the baseball community when she directed Pitch on FOX. As someone who actually launched their performing career via the stage, Kerns remains a tremendous theatre fan, and talks about some of her favorite nights on Broadway which include three trips to Hamilton! As an advocate for empowering and uplifting the next generation of artists, Kerns is honored to have been recently invited to be an Advisory Board member for Notes for Notes, Inc., a national nonprofit providing youth free access to pro recording studio settings, producers, and creative outlets through the creation of recorded music. There's a reason why Kerns' work has endured for so many years, and that very much shines through in this wonderful conversation! http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-074-APE.mp3 Download MP3 Isn't it funny how they always make a bunch of movies about the same thing at the same time? Like Deep Impact and Armageddon, or the three different movies about Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs that are currently in production. Or, for example, like the crappy 1976 King Kong remake and this, its even crappier South Korean equivalent, which apparently is trying to poke fun at M*A*S*H with its stylized title, because, ha? This movie stars the mom from Growing Pains, which is great, because that means we only have three cast members to go before we complete the set. If you're worried that this might be a low-quality movie, fear not; it made the cover of The Official Razzie Movie Guide, and you can watch it in its entirety on YouTube. We live in a golden age. APE, not to be confused with King Kong! Released in 1976 the same year as the De Laurentiis King Kong remake. Based on that alone one would have to know this film has more than a few problems.
