The reminder for the podcast keeps popping up like every five minutes, so let’s work around this one last thing. I’m leaving The Gazette. It’s been 24 years, nearly 22 covering Iowa football. That’s a long damn time in the same circle against the same opponent. There can’t be too many other beat writers who’ve been on the griddle this long. If there are, what in the hell are you doing? You traded your heart for a phone. Thanks to everyone who’s been along for the ride. That’s lame, I know, but we’re not going to be dramatic here. The On Iowa Podcast was sort of the ultimate “Odd Couple” thing. Scott Dochterman kept the records. I tagged along, learned a lot and had a lot of fun. I don’t expect I’ll be part of anything like it again unless I pull something fabulously entertaining out of my ass. I do plan to learn the electric guitar. The On Iowa pod worked because it was “hyper-Iowa.” There was nothing else, really. We didn’t do guests. We did the Hawkeyes. You didn’t get the “drive by,” you got a meal and a dessert and maybe a funny hat or an action figure. Scott is the smartest dude on the beat. I felt good in his company, during the podcast and out in stadiums. I was the “Oscar,” the Walter Matthau to Scott’s “Felix,” the Jack Lemmon. But it wasn’t always that way. This might not make sense, but I’ll try: Where I was weak, Scott was strong and vice versa. That made for some really great content. 10 years and 2 ½ months worth, to be exact. Yes, I’m referencing a movie from 1968. I’m no longer updating my references. I don’t have to. We downsized and I moved to the woods across the river. That’s something that’s been in the mail for me since May and a big driving force behind this. Something something pandemic. Also, at some point, you have to stop bitching to your poor wife about your job. She’s not your damn psychologist. I’m trading back for my heart. Face me to the shore. I’m swimming to the good latitudes. — Marc Morehouse

I’m going to compare the Big Ten to the Bill Paxton character “Pvt. Hudson” in the movie “Aliens.” When the conference released its 10-game schedule six days before deciding to cancel fall football, that was Pvt. Hudson and the bravado he showed at the beginning of the movie, when his military unit descended into the spaceship where all the aliens were. Then, Pvt. Hudson actually saw the aliens. “Game over, man. Game over.” “Seventeen days? We’re not going to last 17 minutes.” Pvt. Hudson freaked the bleep out. The Big Ten’s bravado evaporated over … what was it again … I guess uncertainty. The explanation from commissioner Kevin Warren was “uncertainty.” He’s not wrong, but in the wake of announcing the schedule and giving players something to work toward — whether or not it was ever going to happen — this is Pvt. Hudson seeing the aliens. At this moment, we’re all left wondering “maybe it was an ant hive.” (Another line for Paxton’s character. Here’s another, “What do you mean they cut the power? They’re animals.”) Of course, Pvt. Hudson went out in a blaze of glory. Could the Big Ten have waited? Yes. Should the Big Ten have waited? Probably, but I do believe this always was the conclusion it was going to reach. Was the meeting last weekend a room full of Pvt. Hudsons? And where was the Sigourney Weaver character? You know, the strong, silent type who ends up sending the Queen Alien to a fireball and saves the day? The first reporter to get to an oral history type of thing on this is going to get a lot of clicks. We talked extensively about the Big Ten’s decision and everything that gravity pulls along with it on this episode of the On Iowa Podcast. We also took a bunch of Twitter questions. Scott ended up burning what was left of his fence. My daughter’s apartment is in ruin. We lost a giant tree, got a broken window and had a shed from up the street hit our house. Overall, I feel pretty lucky. There was a minute on Monday when, after the window was broken, I swear I could feel our house swell, like it was about to go. I was Pvt. Hudson, actually yelling at the wind, which, holy bleep, 40 freaking minutes. Newspaper people can be nomads. You make the career moves you think are right. My family has lived here for 23 years, longer than anywhere else. It’s time to redo our city again. Pitter patter. — Marc Morehouse

OK, first the good news: We actually talked football. Like the Hawkeyes and positions and all of that comfortable football porridge that we all dig. (You can switch “porridge” with shrimp and grits or whatever you want, comfort food is the point. We’re all going to need some “comfort football” at some point.) Neither of us believes the Cy-Hawk is totally gone for 2020. Oh, we do think there will be football. It might not be the football we recognize, but football. You read ISU athletics director Jamie Pollard’s letter to fans, right? This is a safety dance between health and dollars. It’s both, especially for Power 5 college sports. A lot is at stake, but you already know that. Is the golden age of college sports over? Throwing money at a problem probably can’t be a thing for the near future. If Kinnick Stadium is going to have a Thursday night game, this is the year. Which Big Ten athletics departments might be in the most trouble (with debt)? Why the MAC probably shouldn’t sue the Big Ten (but if it’s that or sell the office furniture, it might come to that). We believe Spencer Petras is the guy. We talk about the differences between the Californian and Nate Stanley. We also see Alex Padilla and Deuce Hogan. I have to get out of thinking 12-game season. Scott zapped me with Tyler Goodson’s totals. I guessed 1,200 yards. Scott immediately said maybe 800 in a 10-game season against great Big Ten defenses. Oh yeah, there is that. (I’m still having trouble wrapping my head around this, as you can tell.) Neither of us believes Kirk Ferentz faces “loss of institutional” control, but neither of us knows what’s in the review. We got gritty with this topic. Thanks so much for the #oniowapod questions. Heard from some new faces this week. You put air in this and we thank you for that. — Marc Morehouse
