0:00 - Some people have said losing in the gold medal game will make Nate, Cale, and Toews even hungrier to bring Lord Stanley back to Denver. Really? Is that really the case? Do Nate & Cale want to win the Cup more now because they didn't win a gold medal?13:10 - How do the Avs fix their Power Play? Is it a personnel issue? Or are they just too deep inside their own heads? Also, let's dig up the audio of our old friend Nick Tarnasky beating the hell out of a drunk idiot on the golf course. BANG! BANG! BANG!31:20 - Brett happened upon an old video of a Venezuelan baseball brawl. If it happened in an MLB game, people would probably be arrested for assault.
In this special exclusive edition of the 'Jets @ Noon' podcast, Cam, Jim, and Tyson comment on a report from The Athletic's Murat Ates that Jonathan Toews "wouldn't consider going anywhere." While we may be losing our minds without Avalanche hockey, the Olympics have begun and hockey is just around the corner once again. Did team USA bring a good enough team to take home a gold medal for the first time since 1980, or is the Avalanche's firepower on Team Canada with MacKinnon, Makar, and Toews too much to overcome?
The Avalanche got the bounce back that they needed to start the road trip, dominating the Maple Leafs in Toronto on the back of a Brock Nelson hat trick and an incredible 32 save performance from Mackenzie Blackwood. The health of Gabe Landeskog immediately became the top priority for the Avs in just their third regulation loss of the year against Florida, but it seems they avoided the worst case with an upper body injury. Additionally, Toews and Blackwood will also some miss some time. The loss to Florida comes on the heels of another great comeback win over the Hurricanes, with the powerplay finally coming through. Team USA also named their Olympic roster, and it sucks, but Brock Nelson made it so it's fine. The Author Events Series presents Miriam Toews | A Truce That Is Not Peace In Conversation with Katy Waldman ''Why do you write?'' the organizer of a literary event in Mexico City asks Miriam Toews. Each attempted answer from Toews-all of them unsatisfactory to the organizer-surfaces new layers of grief, guilt, and futility connected to her sister's suicide. She has been keeping up, she realizes, a decades-old internal correspondence, filling a silence she barely understands. And we, her readers, come to see that the question is as impossible to answer as deciding whether to live life as a comedy or a tragedy. Marking the first time Toews has written her own life in nonfiction, A Truce That Is Not Peace explores the uneasy pact a writer makes with memory. Wildly inventive yet masterfully controlled; slyly casual yet momentous; wrenching and joyful; hilarious and humane-this is Miriam Toews at her dazzling best, remaking her world and inventing an astonishing new literary form to contain it. Miriam Toews is the author of the bestselling novels Women Talking, Fight Night, All My Puny Sorrows, Summer of My Amazing Luck, A Boy of Good Breeding, A Complicated Kindness, The Flying Troutmans, and Irma Voth, and two works of nonfiction, A Truce That is Not Peace and Swing Low: A Life. She is winner of the Governor General's Award for Fiction, the Libris Award for Fiction Book of the Year, the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize, and the Writers' Trust Engel/Findley Award. She lives in Toronto. Katy Waldman is a staff writer at The New Yorker, for which she writes about books, culture, and more. Previously, she was a staff writer at Slate and the host of the ''Slate's Audio Book Club'' podcast. She won the National Book Critics Circle's Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing in 2019 and the American Society of Magazine Editors's award for journalists under thirty in 2018; her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, New York magazine, the Paris Review, and elsewhere. She lives with her husband and dog in Washington, D.C. An edited version of this conversation is now available as part of our collaboration with The Yale Review. Read it here: https://yalereview.org/article/shakespeare-and-company-interview-miriam-toewsTrigger warning: This is a tender, funny, and hopeful conversation, that inevitably touches on the subjects of suicide and depression. Please be advised before listening. In this moving and intimate discussion, Miriam Toews joins Adam Biles at Shakespeare and Company to talk about her memoir A Truce That Is Not Peace. Beginning with the question “Why do I write?”, Toews embarks on a deeply personal exploration of creativity, doubt, family, and loss. She reflects on her Mennonite upbringing, the deaths of her father and sister, and the ways in which writing—and laughter—have helped her make sense of pain and love. With warmth, wit, and clarity, Toews examines the limits of narrative, the pull of silence, and the stubborn hope that persists in the face of despair. A meditation on grief, rebellion, and the meaning of home, this is a conversation about how to keep living, and how to keep creating, when life itself resists coherence.Buy A Truce That Is Not Peace: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/a-truce-that-is-not-peace*Miriam Toews is the author of the bestselling novels Women Talking, All My Puny Sorrows, Summer of My Amazing Luck, A Boy of Good Breeding, A Complicated Kindness, The Flying Troutmans, Irma Voth, Fight Night and one work of nonfiction, Swing Low: A Life. This episode features Rob Toews from Radical Ventures and Ari Morcos, Head of Research at Datology AI, reacting to Andrej Karpathy's recent statement that AGI is at least a decade away and that current AI capabilities are "slop." The discussion explores whether we're in an AI bubble, with both guests pushing back on overly bearish narratives while acknowledging legitimate concerns about hype and excessive CapEx spending. They debate the sustainability of AI scaling, examining whether continued progress will come from massive compute increases or from efficiency gains through better data quality, architectural innovations, and post-training techniques like reinforcement learning. The conversation also tackles which companies truly need frontier models versus those that can succeed with slightly-behind-the-curve alternatives, the surprisingly static landscape of AI application categories (coding, healthcare, and legal remain dominant), and emerging opportunities from brain-computer interfaces to more efficient scaling methods. Jonathan Toews scores his first as a Jet and shows he’s still got plenty left in the tank, while Mark Scheifele looks like a man on a mission to make Team Canada. In Vegas, Jack Eichel’s new contract hasn’t slowed him down one bit—he’s leading the league in points as the Golden Knights roll to the top of the Pacific. Vancouver’s dealing with tough injury news as Filip Chytil lands in concussion protocol after a heavy (and possibly late) Tom Wilson hit, and with Lekkerimäki also sidelined, the Canucks may be forced to hunt for centre help. In Toronto, Easton Cowan sits while Max Domi gets a top-line look, and goalie Anthony Stolarz’s public comments about defensive lapses & effort spark some chatter in the room. Meanwhile, in Edmonton, the Oilers head into Ottawa suffering through another sluggish start to a season, with Evan Bouchard struggling mightily and Connor McDavid looking surprisingly human so far. To start off hour one, we quickly dove into Free Advice from Damon Bunting! Jamie Thomas was the first guest on today's show. He started off with lots of laughs. We then got right into last night's game and Toews repping the Jets jersey for the first time last night and how special that was, he then shared how big of a role Toews has to play this season in order for the Jets to succeed. Thomas finished with his thoughts on a Kyle Connor extension, and whether or not he'll be resigning in Edmonton. It was then time for the Play Alberta Early Bird Bet of the day. In the middle of the hour, Matt Scianitti stopped by to discuss all things CFL football. Scianitti shared his thoughts on the changes announced earlier in the week, Rourke's comments he made on Monday and finished with some international women's Rugby talk. In this Summer Coolers edition of NHL Wraparound, Neil Smith and Vic Morren dissect the Winnipeg Jets, who entered 2025 as the surprise Presidents' Trophy winners—only to fall in the second round of the playoffs. After a miraculous comeback in Game 7 vs. St. Louis, the Jets were grounded by the Dallas Stars—and the split personality home/road record (6–1 at home, 0–6 on the road) told the story. Now, with Nikolaj Ehlers gone, Connor Hellebuyck under scrutiny, and Jonathan Toews making a shocking return, is this team still built to contend?
In this Summer Coolers episode of NHL Wraparound, hosts Neil Smith and Vic Morren examine the Colorado Avalanche, a franchise that continues to contend—but still hasn't returned to the Stanley Cup Final since hoisting the trophy in 2022.The Avalanche finished the 2024–25 season with 102 points and their eighth straight playoff appearance, but fell in Game 7 to the Dallas Stars in the second round. The hosts dive into what's holding the Avs back from reclaiming the Cup, despite the presence of two of the league's most electrifying stars: Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar. They also break down a relatively quiet offseason highlighted by the signing of Brent Burns, the addition of Victor Olofsson, and the trade that brought in Gavin Brindley while shipping out Charlie Coyle and Miles Wood. The Avalanche also re-signed key contributors like Brock Nelson, Parker Kelly, and Josh Manson, while losing depth pieces like Jonathan Drouin and Ryan Lindgren. As the Avs prepare for another run, the big questions remain: Is this still a Cup-caliber team? Or have they become more sizzle than substance?IN THIS EPISODE:[00:00] Avalanche recap: Consistency without deep playoff success[00:36] Game 7 vs. Dallas: A haunting finish to a promising year[01:00] Star power vs. depth: Are MacKinnon & Makar enough?[02:00] Offseason review: Brent Burns signs, Coyle/Wood traded[03:00] Gavin Brindley's upside and forward depth[04:00] UFA/RFA re-signings: Nelson, Manson, Vejdemo, Kelly[05:00] Defensive pairings: Makar, Toews, Manson, Burns[06:00] Goaltending: Blackwood and Wedgewood tandem[07:00] Full-strength roster? Landeskog returns to open season[08:00] A stacked Central Division: Dallas, Winnipeg, Colorado[09:00] Why playoff format hurts deep divisionsKEY TAKEAWAYS:Colorado's core remains elite, with MacKinnon, Makar, Rantanen, and Landeskog leading the way, but playoff progress has stalled. The addition of Brent Burns offers leadership and power-play presence, but the team needs more from its second-tier stars.Gabriel Landeskog's full-season return could be a game-changer, giving Colorado much-needed leadership and physicality.Goaltending remains a question: Blackwood and Wedgewood must prove they can deliver postseason-caliber performances. The Central Division is brutal—with Dallas and Winnipeg also strong, one top-tier team will inevitably exit early due to the current playoff format.RESOURCE LINKS:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgBj1LV0-DMfBhcRPSJZLjAX (Twitter): https://twitter.com/NHLWraparoundNeil Smith: https://twitter.com/NYCNeilVic Morren: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vic-morren-7038737/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nhlwraparound/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@nhlwraparoundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61555451139787#NHL #Hockey #Podcast #ColoradoAvalanche #JaredBednar #NathanMacKinnon #CaleMakar #BrentBurns #VictorOlofsson #GavinBrindley #CharlieCoyle #MilesWood #BrockNelson #ParkerKelly #JoshManson #JoelKiviranta #JonathanDrouin #RyanLindgren #JimmyVesey #IvanIvan #DevonToews #SamGirard #SamMalinski #MackenzieBlackwood #ScottWedgewood #ValNichushkin #JackDrury #RossColton #MartinNecas #ArtturiLehkonen #GabrielLandeskog
