This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, March 1.The first day of March will feel like spring is coming soon, but we'll see what happens. According to the National Weather Service the day will start mostly cloudy in the Cedar Rapids area, before becoming gradually sunnier. The high is predicted to be near 53 degrees with a low of around 30 degrees. It could be a bit breezy, with the wind increasing during the day, but wind gusts will not exceed 25 mph.Two women were found dead Tuesday morning after deputies responded to reports of a shooting at a home on Jordans Grove Road, west of Springville, according to the Linn County Sheriff's Office.Deputies were called at 9:28 a.m. to the house at 2561 Jordans Grove Rd., where they found two adult women dead from gunshot wounds. A witness was interviewed at the scene, and the Sheriffs Office said “there is no danger to the public.”The Sheriff's Office did not say what led to the shooting and did not announce that any arrests had been made in relation to it.The names of the deceased have not been released yet, pending notification of family. Both bodies have been transported to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Ankeny for autopsies.Fifty years after Iowa began collecting and analyzing data on residents diagnosed with cancer through its Iowa Cancer Registry, statistics reveal Iowa has the second-highest cancer incidence rate in the nation and is the only state with a rising rate of cancer.Kentucky has the highest cancer rate, lining up with its high smoking rate, while Iowa has a high rate of just about every major cancer type across the board. As the Iowa Cancer Registry celebrates its 50th anniversary, the 2023 report notes the spike in cases is tied, in part, to Iowa's aging population, “as advancing age is the leading risk factor for cancer.”The rise in cases also ties to Iowa's larger population — growing from 2.9 million in 1973 to 3.2 this year — and the improvement and corresponding increase in cancer detection among Iowans. The study also notes body mass index, inadequate physical activity, binge drinking and smoking as risk factors. The former Hawkeye football players who in 2020 sued the University of Iowa athletics operation for racial discrimination and harassment have dropped their claims against head coach Kirk Ferentz, offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz, Athletic Director Gary Barta and former strength coach Chris Doyle. Those dismissals leave the university and the state Board of Regents as the only defendants in the federal case, which last week also dropped claims against linebackers coach Seth Wallace. The case had been set for a jury trial in May 2023, but a U.S. District Court judge earlier this month postponed a pretrial conference and trial until further notice “in light of pending motions in this case.”The former players — Akrum Wadley, Jonathan Parker, Marcel Joly, Aaron Mends, Darian Cooper, Brandon Simon, Javon Foy and several others later removed from the lawsuit — sued the Hawkeye football program and its coaches in November 2020 following outcry from former players on social media and years of internal and external investigations into accusations of discrimination.

Today’s guest came to Iowa out of familiar state of New Jersey where Iowa has had success with recruiting RBs such as Albert Young. My guest attended Weequahic High School in Newark, New Jersey. He played at Iowa from 2014 to 2017. In his final collegiate game, he was named the Pinstripe Bowl MVP after collecting 283 all-purpose yards and scoring one touchdown . . . He’s ranked 5th all time with his career rushing totals for 2,872 yards and 4th all time with 28 touchdowns. And added 761 yards on 71 receptions and an additional 7 receiving TDS . . . one of four running backs in school history to rush for over 1,000 yards in consecutiuve seasons . . . Not to mention ranking 9th on the All time career yardage totals... Akrum Wadley went on to sign free agent contracts with the Tennessee Titans, Atlanta Legends and Houston Roughnecks.... Ladies Gentlemen....Akrum Wadley

Cazzie Russell starts at 1:00 A Michigan legend joins MGoRadio to talk about his time with the Wolverines, discuss the debate over name and image rights, and the upcoming Michigan basketball season. 2. Rutgers After UFR starts at 31:42 Michigan’s run game is not going to be good until there is a threat of QB run. The run game opened up after Milton came in. Onwenu got a terrible PFF grade but Brian absolved him. Ruiz was a bit more problematic. Michigan seems to have piled on too much stuff and the guys on the line are still trying to figure out how to execute it. Michigan threw some fades! The interception was okay because we’re finally taking risks. The defense was pretty much the Cam McGrone show and he should get considerably more playing time going forward. Glasgow had a rough game and defending slants and his playing time could be in trouble. Mike Dwumfour exists! Got healthy against Rutgers, now Iowa is the big hurdle. 3. Matt Demorest Got Stung by Yellow Jackets starts at 53:14 Matt comes on to share some stories about his travel across the Big Ten. 4. Iowa starts at 1:06:54 Iowa’s TE is their former fullback. Oliver Martin is 5th on the WR depth chart. Ihmir Smith-Marsette is a very good burner on the outside. Brandon Smith is more of a jump ball type. Two NFL-bound tackles in Tristan Wirfs and Alaric Jackson. Nate Stanley is this year’s inexplicably hyped-for-the-NFL B1G QB. Mekhi Sargent is solid, but he’s not Akrum Wadley. Just a guy. Play a 4-3 even and a cover 2 on defense with not as good of a secondary as usual, but with a monster at DE in AJ Epenesa. Michigan is going to have problems blocking him one-on-one. If Michigan can keep the QB clean, they should be able to throw on Iowa. Can Patterson exploit the zone? If there’s a threat of QB run, Michigan should be able to slice the team open. But what if Patterson can’t keep it. MUSIC: Featured tonight: Reader’s band Jes Cru, which is the most 1990s band I’ve ever heard, and would you’ know it: they played around Ann Arbor in the 1990s. Savannah State leads the nation in three point shooting, but not exactly in a good way. In this episode @DynastyRich and @DynastyMatt break down the final batch of rookie running back entering the 2018 NFL Draft. There will be more backs to discuss after the draft in two weeks but these final six round up the guys top 18 rookies. Listen in to see who may be a late round steal in your upcoming rookie draft and what to do with that player to help you for years to come. Who's the next late round gem amongst Kalen Ballage, Bo Scarborough, Ito Smith, Justin Jackson, Josh Adams and Akrum Wadley.
I sit down to talk about change of pace running backs Mark Walton, Ito Smith, Chase Edmonds and Akrum Wadley. Picks 6-10 are on the clock today. There is a lot of carryover between the predictive and what I would do drafts in picks 6-10, as NFL teams don't screw these picks up.
Paul starts the show by discussing the depth of this running back class and how the backs can be characterized into three different types. The types are three down or potential three down running backs, two down between the tackles power runners and also change of pace, receiving backs or specialists. He discusses how in each of the categories teams can be targeting backs in the early rounds, mid rounds, or late rounds that fit into each of the different types. He first discusses the three down or potential three down backs. The players discussed include Saquon Barkley, Sony Michel, Derrius Guice, Ronald Jones, Kerryon Johnson, Rashaad Penny and John Kelly. He discusses how some of those prospects did not play often in the passing game but he could see them developing into more of a three down role at the next level. Next, he discusses the physical, tough, power runners, that may be best suited in a committee, where they are complemented by a receiving back. Some of the prospects discussed here include Nick Chubb, Royce Freeman, Bo Scarbrough, Josh Adams, Darrel Williams, and Jordan Wilkins. He discusses how Chubb and Freeman in particular may be able to play on all three downs in some capacity based on what else is on the depth chart. Last, Paul discusses the change of pace, receiving running backs, which is the deepest of the three types. Some of the names discussed include Kallen Ballage, Nyheim Hines, Mark Walton, Akrum Wadley, Chase Edmonds, Justin Jackson, Phillip Lindsay, Ito Smith and Roc Thomas To Purchase the Premium Content which includes the 2018 Scouting Notebook (Draft Guide), Rankings/Tiers Notebook, Freshman Notebook, and Draft Projections notebook, click here. Even with a few days to calm down, still tough to look back at the Penn State and not wonder what might have been. Luckily, Brian and Zach are not the ones that play the game as hopefully the team was able to put that disappointment behind them to focus on the trip up to East Lansing to take on Sparty. This week's Four Down Territory Breakdown focuses on the amazing atmosphere at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday night, whether Nate Stanley has the "clutch" gene, how good is Akrum Wadley (particularly at yards after catch - spoiler alert, very good), and what this weekend's game might mean for the rest of the season. The Hawks are undefeated heading into B1G, which is something that we can't say every year! Since Brian wasn't able to join Zach for the RAW reaction, we start this episode with a quick recap of the "disappointing" win over North Texas. This week's 4DT breakdown includes a discussion of Iowa's ability to win in different ways, concerns along the line of scrimmage, and Brian professing his love for a new Iowa RB (we hope Akrum Wadley doesn't get too jealous). I talk the sticky points of Iowa football with the Land of Ten's Scott Dochterman. Of course, a ton of you know that Scott worked at The Gazette for 10 years before becoming a Land of Ten-ner last year. It was his idea to start this podcast, which has been around since 2010. I write "his idea," but it's a helluva lot more than just that. This podcasting gear would probably still be gathering dust in a closet without Scott figuring it out. One day, after going all Doc Brown from "Back to the Future," Scott emerged from the cubicle with a eureka and, boom, the On Iowa podcast breathed its first life. It went on to have a few more lives. I quit that one time because of frustrating equipment snafus. We got new portable equipment and Scott went and figured that out, too. And we've been back on track. Until today. The #oniowapod will be Mike Hlas and me this fall, starting at the end of the month. It's simply business. Everyone wearing the same jersey. Nothing else to it. I've loved doing the pod with Scott. He set a standard and I tried to keep up my end of the bargain. We reminisce some at the end of the podcast. Never say never in this crazy business, so we're good and we'll see how the sails sail and keep an open mind for something in the future. But we also had a real #oniowapod. We have similar ideas on the hotspots. You know them by now -- WR, DT, special teams. Um, James Butler didn't come here because Iowa was his favorite Big Ten team. Maybe that's the cast, but he came here to play football. We don't know how it'll turn out, but, breaking news, he's going to be eating some off of Akrum Wadley's plate. Probably. So, anyway, brace yourselves for that. We got through a podcast with zero non-conference schedule talk. Mark it down, dude. You guys were hungry for one of these and you had a lot of Twitter questions. Night games -- Don't know, but you should know that all times are on the table every week this year in the B1G. (I think Penn State and Ohio State are strong possibilities.) QB battle? -- Depth charts and insurance policies and, hey, did we talk ourselves into Peyton Mansell being a contender for this job? I think we did. Brandon Snyder return -- I think I might've talked myself out of that, just given the position he plays and the stop-and-start stress the life of a Big Ten safety puts on a knee. High on Fant -- And Hockenson, for that matter. And Beyer. OK, all of the tight ends have value. We broke down how a four-TE offense might look. (Yes, we did that.) What would it take to get Iowa 10 wins -- 2,800 yards passing. Basketball expectations -- Scott said 23 wins. With the schedule that's just been released, why not? Yes, this isn't a great year for Iowa not to have an established punter. But Ryan Gersonde is the one with a scholarship. Biggest surprise? Biggest disappointment? You gotta listen to the pod. Once again, thanks for everything Scott did for the pod. Without him, there wouldn't have been one. Mike and I will be podcasting on Thursday afternoons. The show will be an hour. I think there will be Facebook Live elements (details still being worked out). I look forward to it. Of course, it'll never beat the best podcast in the world, which would've been someone recording the conversations (Scott, Mike and I) during our drives around Big Ten country the last . . . whoa . . . almost 20 years. I'll never laugh harder.
Jon and Trevor talk about senior and underclassmen running backs who could provide elite depth to a high end class with strong seasons, including Bo Scarbrough, Justin Jackson, Ronald Jones, Sony Michel, Akrum Wadley, Jordan Scarlett, Myles Gaskin, Ralph Webb, Lavon Coleman, L.J. Scott and more. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Land of Ten's Scott Dochterman and I probably talked too long today. It was reminiscent of the old days, driving to all of the Big Ten locales and figuring it all out. Quick intro was a post I did asking Kirk Ferentz about recruiting areas for assistants. I think the headline there was Iowa is back in Florida and Ohio and kind of piecemealing it in Texas. And then we skipped right to the main event -- Iowa, Jane Meyer, Gary Barta, Tracey Griesbaum and what's next? None of the conclusions were particularly good for anyone. Iowa looks "too big to fail." If this were an HR procedural, the case study would be filed in the "how not to" tab. Iowa has announced it will investigate its processes. Maybe sweeping changes come. Lots of ambiguity was revealed. I'm not sure there's enough caulk to fix all of it. Iowa athletics director Gary Barta learned a $1.4 million lesson in documentation. B1G athletics directors shouldn't have to learn that lesson, not in a courtroom and not with millions at stake. The jury last week in Des Moines was unanimous when it found for Meyer in her case against the UI. Meyer's five claims were gender discrimination, sexual orientation discrimination, retaliation, equal pay violation and whistleblower violation So, now Iowa has an athletics director with that prominent in his Google search. How long can Iowa afford this? Maybe Iowa appeals, but for a sitting B1G athletics director, that's a stain that's not coming out. From my end, Meyer was unpleasant to deal with, but who cares? My problems aren't your problems. Her attitude with media wasn't out of line with how Iowa is overall. It was just turned up to 11. Scott has an excellent example of this in the pod. You should listen. Griesbaum trail begins in early June. I wouldn't be shocked it Iowa won. I picked Michigan over Iowa last year like 42-7 or something like that. I'm not about to get in the business of predicting what juries will do. I know even less about the law than I do football. I asked the Twitter peoples what their over/unders are for Iowa football this year. I think the low was 4.5 wins. The high was 9 (I think there was one 9 out there). I think that says you have a healthy skepticism for a team that has a new QB, new OC, one proven WR who missed spring with a bad foot and is looking for some depth at DT. Skepticism is warranted. You're not a bad fan if your May over/under for Iowa victories is 5.5. There's a difference between skepticism and cynicism. We had a few cynical tweets. You're gonna have hop-ons. I'm at 6 right now. Scott built a good case for more optimism. Iowa does have a terrific OL and Akrum Wadley. I know I have this in another post, but I want to say Iowa is 18-4 the last four or five years when it rushes 40-plus times a game. Can the Hawkeyes do that and win in the Big Ten West? Uh, yeah. It certainly can. It has. If the Hawkeyes march toward that 40-plus number, without being hardheaded about it, your 5.5 O/Us will be vulnerable. We forgot about the NFL draft and got into that at the end. Scott embedded with former Iowa TE George Kittle. That was a good call. -- Time to go for Desmond King. You can let the muck of an unexpected drop in the draft pull you down, or you can work every minute and improve your standing on the Chargers and in the NFL. King has pretty much said this, BTW. -- CJ Beathard will have to produce at some point, but that's not right now. -- Scott is a Bears fan. I'm a Packers person. We both liked the Vikings taking Jaleel Johnson, so we both actually hate that pick. Can LeShun Daniels replaces LeGarrette Blount as the big back in New England?
Land of Ten's Scott Dochterman and I talked a little about a lot of things on the podcast today. First topic: The first round of the NFL draft starts Thursday. Neither Scott nor I will be on super-high alert that a Hawkeye will go in the first round, but you never know. Friday is second and third rounds. I expect at least two if not three Hawkeyes to go Friday. Does it feel like CB Desmond King has had the world's longest draft evaluation? Since the day he said he was returning to Iowa City for his senior year it's felt like he's been under heavy scrutiny. And he probably has, that's how this all works. I still think he's the first Hawkeye taken this weekend. Now, DT Jaleel Johnson or TE George Kittle? Johnson had a fantastic senior season and has the body and power that will get him an NFL paycheck for a long, long time. Case-by-case, depends on need, best athlete available and all of that, but Johnson should fit into the second or third round. I've not seen too many Hawkeyes rocket out of the Combine like Kittle did. If nothing else, his 4.51 40 and 11-foot broad jump forced NFL personnel people to do their homework on him. Yes, the first chapter probably was the mid-foot sprain he suffered this year and how that bit into his production, but then you go a little deeper and find cut-up after cut-up of Kittle's blocking prowess. And now he's in a great position, better than I would've predicted when the season ended. We went from the draft to the Hawkeyes' spring football. Quick points here: 1) We don't know where the alchemy is going to happen with the passing game. We acknowledge Iowa can still be successful here, but it's going to look unconventional (read really tight end-y) and, yeah, it also might not work. 2) Spring was set up for Nathan Stanley to take what had to have been a "leader in the clubhouse" status and build confidence and distance as the No. 1 over Tyler Wiegers. That didn't happen. At least going off everything Brian Ferentz, Ken O'Keefe and Kirk Ferentz told us, that didn't happen. We can only go off what they tell us, right? And then we saw the spring game. Touch, accuracy, it wasn't there for either QB. Then again, those plays and personnel groups looked a lot like last year's. Maybe there's another layer of going on here and we just haven't seen their best. 3) Jake Gervase is certainly another body at safety and he slings in on a web -- kind of like Spiderman -- just in the nick of time. The more bodies the merrier here. I see Gervase and Miles Taylor as starters with Amani Hooker, Noah Clayberg, Joe Argo and incoming freshmen Djimon Colbert, Camron Harrell and Geno Stone lending depth/competition. I think that's enough to find a good core of three. 3) Defensive tackle will be a hot spot. Lots of inexperience. It worries me senior Nathan Bazata was still out this spring. Everyone expects him back and, hey, he's a senior and coaches know what he can do. Still, his 2016 ended in injury, I'm sure he'd like to be up and running. 4) Man, Iowa has a lot of young linebackers. We opened, just a little, the Bo Bower vs. Amani Jones can o' worms. Why not? It's still April, right? 5) Iowa's offense will run through the O-line and Akrum Wadley, as it should. 6) We think two freshmen corners have to play. 7) Shoot, we forgot to talk about kicker and punter. We touched on the Jane Meyer trial in Des Moines. I've used this metaphor a lot lately, but let's say Iowa AD Gary Barta is a butcher going to work with a freshly whitened smock. He was on the stand for something like 11 hours. His smock at this point looks like it was used to clean the slaughterhouse floor. Everyone comes away from this unclean. I don't like that during athletes' exit interviews 27 cases of verbal abuse and 28 cases of mental abuse were mentioned and not investigated because they were anonymous. I'd like to think major college athletics can do better.

How about Four Downs of...It Wasn't a Dream, We Still Won!! Brian and Zach break down Iowa’s huge 14-13 win over Michigan and in doing so cover such important topics such as, which No. 16 is our favorite, whether CJ got his helmet back, and our final take on Coluzzi-gate and whether his tumbling act was an elaborate fake or a bad snap gone wrong. The guys obviously were unable to hide their excitement in the RAW reaction to the game this past weekend, and this 4DT breakdown features a much more upbeat analysis, but don’t worry, there is still criticism for that passing game. Oh, and Akrum Wadley – he is good. This was the idea of Land of Ten's Scott Dochterman. He texted early Monday morning and said, "Hey Sluggo, how about a podcast?" I was still asleep. It's all I do anymore. Sleep, all of the time. Sleep, sleep, sleep. So, I thought it was a good idea and here you go, bonus #oniowapod. Scott and I talk about the how of Iowa's 14-13 upset victory over No. 3 Michigan last Saturday night. (It was the defense, defensive line and some Akrum Wadley, who earned a long deserved hug from his head coach and was beaming afterward.) We talk about what it means. Yes, Iowa is 6-4 (4-3 in the B1G), but, man, did Iowa need that. The players needed it. The coaches needed it. You guys needed it. And, hey, I'm not going to pretend, we needed it. We were starting to sound like broken records. We were starting to drift into "shock jock" territory. There will be a lot of crusty beat writers out there who say they simply follow the story. To a certain extent, that's the formula. That's what we all do and always will do. But I'm here to tell you, this is a whole lot easier when everyone is happy. Or when everyone isn't itchy with the "fire everyone." We talk about scale. Where does this fit as far as "greatest" Kinnick moments go? It's up there, man. Up there. I bounce to Wisconsin 2004, when a Big Ten championship trophy was on the field. Scott scaled it even farther and brought up that time you guys tore down the goalposts at the Metrodome. Still, the single greatest achievement in college football rivalry history. I want it to be my 30 for 30 someday. I need to make that happen. Bottom line, everyone who's interested in Iowa needed that. And Scott talks some basketball. Thanks for listening.
