Siegfried Sassoon was born on 8 September 1886 in Kent. His father was part of a Jewish merchant family, originally from Iran and India, and his mother part of the artistic Thorneycroft family. Sassoon studied at Cambridge University but left without a degree. He then lived the life of a country gentleman, hunting and playing cricket while also publishing small volumes of poetry. In May 1915, Sassoon was commissioned into the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and went to France. He impressed many with his bravery in the front line and was given the nickname 'Mad Jack' for his near-suicidal exploits. He was decorated twice. His brother Hamo was killed in November 1915 at Gallipoli. In the summer of 1916, Sassoon was sent to England to recover from fever. He went back to the front, but was wounded in April 1917 and returned home. Meetings with several prominent pacifists, including Bertrand Russell, had reinforced his growing disillusionment with the war and in June 1917 he wrote a letter that was published in the Times in which he said that the war was being deliberately and unnecessarily prolonged by the government. As a decorated war hero and published poet, this caused public outrage. It was only his friend and fellow poet, Robert Graves, who prevented him from being court-martialled by convincing the authorities that Sassoon had shell-shock. He was sent to Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh for treatment. Here he met, and greatly influenced, Wilfred Owen. Both men returned to the front where Owen was killed in 1918. Sassoon was posted to Palestine and then returned to France, where he was again wounded, spending the remainder of the war in England. Many of his war poems were published in 'The Old Huntsman' (1917) and 'Counter-Attack' (1918).After the war Sassoon spent a brief period as literary editor of the Daily Herald before going to the United States, travelling the length and breadth of the country on a speaking tour. He then started writing the near-autobiographical novel 'Memoirs of a Fox-hunting Man' (1928). It was an immediate success, and was followed by others including 'Memoirs of an Infantry Officer' (1930) and 'Sherston's Progress' (1936). Sassoon had a number of homosexual affairs but in 1933 surprised many of his friends by marrying Hester Gatty. They had a son, George, but the marriage broke down after World War Two.He continued to write both prose and poetry. In 1957, he was received into the Catholic church. He died on 1 September 1967.-bio via BBC This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe

Employees of Everett's Daily Herald are on strike today. They're protesting the management decisions that led to a dozen staffers being laid off from the newspaper last Wednesday. Back in March, Carpenter Media Group purchased Black Press Media, which owned 43 publications in Washington and Alaska, including the Herald. Carpenter says the restructuring is part of plans to improve the economics of the paper and better serve the community. The Daily Herald covers nearly 1 million residents in Snohomish and Island counties. Carpenter reportedly has plans to eliminate 62 positions across Sound Publishing, of which the Herald is its largest publication. This decision comes amid years of contraction within local journalism. To get more on the potential impacts, Soundside spoke with Caleb Hutton. He's the local news editor of the Everett Herald, and is among the newsroom members who is being let go. KUOW requested to speak with representatives from Carpenter Media Group, but they have not responded.Guests: Caleb Hutton - Local News Editor, Everett's Daily Herald Relevant Links: HeraldNet.com - ‘This breaks my heart': Roughly half of Everett Herald news staff laid off KUOW - Everett Herald's new owner appears to censor story about layoffs WA State Standard - At one of WA's oldest papers, deep cuts and an uncertain future See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Nick welcomes music journalist Jim Ryan from Forbes & The Daily Herald to discuss some memorable concerts he's attended, like an annoying James Taylor with his bad jokes, and an incredible performance by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss. They also talk about Jim's interviews with notable figures like Mickey Hart from The Grateful Dead and Michael Richards from "Seinfeld." Plus, they share stories about Jim hanging out with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and bond over their mutual dislike for The Eagles. Later, Esmeralda Leon joins Nick to talk about some disaster movies she's caught up on, including "Leviathan," "Dante's Peak," "Deep Impact," and "The Day After Tomorrow." Nick warns Esma about the complete (but hilarious) idiocy of "Beyond the Poseidon Adventure" and shares his thoughts on cicadas. They also wrap up their snack tour of Thailand with some tasty coconut chips. [EP254]

In November of 2017, a 22-year-old woman went missing in Chicago after sending a string of urgent text messages to a friend. Nearly two weeks later, a 911 call was made from her cell phone, but the call ended almost as soon as it was made. When it was traced back to her phone, police discovered that the call originated from a nature preserve 45 minutes away from where she went missing. And as if the situation couldn't get more perplexing, the location of her remains completely stumped the police. This is the story of Cheyann Klus. Having risen to the status of international newspaper sensation, The Dalby Spook, or Gef the talking mongoose to those that knew him, was now poised to meet some of the world's most infamous psychical researchers. Unfortunately, Gef was as shy amongst company as he was talkative to the Irvings. Yet still the story of Gef persisted until eventually, his name ended up associated with a debate that took place in the highest office of the land. SOURCES Josiffe, Christopher (2017) Gef! Discovered in Utah County in 1960, Nutty Putty Cave quickly became a popular destination for amateur and professional cavers and spelunkers as a kind of bucket list cave of considerable difficulty. Despite its popularity, beginning in the late 1980s, the cave became notorious for the number of explorers who became trapped and required emergency assistance to escape its twisting, narrow, and poorly mapped passageways. In late November 2009, the inherent risk and dangers of Nutty Putty Cave made national news when twenty-six-year-old college student John Edward Jones became trapped upside-down in an uncharted and perilously narrow section of the cave.
