This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Saturday, October 9, and Sunday, October 10. This weekend could be the last one in a while with highs in the 80s, as temperatures are looking to be dropping significantly in the week to come. According to the National Weather Service, clouds will gradually increase as the day goes on Saturday, with a high near 80 degrees. Despite the cloud cover, there will be no rain projected for the Iowa vs. Penn State game. There will be some rain predicted for Sunday, with a 20 percent chance of showers, increasing to 40 percent overnight into Monday. When not raining, it should be mostly cloudy on Sunday with a high near 82 degrees. A judge Friday extended his order preventing Iowa officials from enforcing a law that bans local school districts from implementing mask requirements until a federal lawsuit challenging the law can be heard. U.S. District Judge Robert Pratt previously had issued a temporary restraining order preventing Gov. Kim Reynolds and Department of Education Director Ann Lebo from enforcing the law that Reynolds signed in May. The order entered Friday issues a preliminary injunction that continues to prohibit the state from enforcing the law until the court case can be decided. Gov. Kim Reynolds on Friday pledged again to fight against the ruling. At least two dozen Iowa school districts have implemented mask requirements since Pratt's initial order Sept. 13. Eastern Iowa's two largest school districts — Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, representing more than 30,000 students — last month reinstated a mask mandate for students, staff and visitors. With football season in full swing, Iowa sports betting nearly doubled in September, with wagers exceeding $210 million, giving the state a half million-dollar payout. The https://www.thegazette.com/government-politics/iowa-september-sports-betting-soars-to-210-million-in-september/www.irgc.iowa.gov (Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission) reported Friday that the sports betting handle increased 94 percent from $108.4 million in August. The surge was fueled, in part, by the betting on the annual Cy-Hawk football game as well as a full slate of college and National Football League games. The September numbers broke Iowa's single-month record of $161.4 million set during college basketball's March Madness, according to the commission's monthly report. A bail bondsman and the man he was trying to take into custody were injured Friday evening in Cedar Rapids as the bondsman shot the man who struck a bondsman with his car. Police were called at 4:48 p.m. Friday to the Dairy Queen at Wilson Avenue and Bowling Street SW for the report that someone had been shot. There they learned that two bail bondsmen had attempted to take Richard Dean Hamilton, Jr., 40, into custody, as he was wanted on failure to appear warrants related to drug charges, police said. During this attempt, one of the bail bondsmen shot Hamilton, although police did not say why this happened or who did the shooting. Also unclear as of this recording was what happened when Hamilton attempted to escape, as one of the bondsman was struck by a vehicle as he drove away. Hamilton was later located by officers assigned to the PCAT team at a residence in the 2200 block of D St. SW. Both Hamilton and the bondsman were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. There was oh-so-much college football to talk about on this week's episode, so we hit the ground running re: the Aggies and the Razorbacks and the Cy-Hawk game. Oh, and re: the cat at the Miami game because that rescue operation was, in Melanie's words, the play of the week. We also discuss our uncertainty about how to pose in some pictures we're having made (I'm traveling to Texas this Thursday), and Melanie recaps her recent visit to College Station. And if all that weren't enough (it probably is, but just pretend to be excited), it's my turn for Five Favorites. The Des Moines Register's Chad Leistikow is joined by Kennington Smith and the two break down the big win over Iowa State as well as take calls from listeners as the season presses on. Chad points out some famous Kent State alum before diving into five big questions. To end the show they look at other Big Ten games this weekend and how the Hawkeyes should matchup against the Golden Flashes.
Some Nicki Minaj conversation bleeds into the second hour, as does a little Ace of Base talk, but the guys talk college football and beer and whiskey with Bruno and a special guest he brings with him into studio. Then Jon Miller joins to talk about the Hawkeyes' big win in the Cy-Hawk game and what's next for the University of Iowa. To end the second hour Chris chats some Knoxville Raceway.
The show starts off with us learning that Saturday's game was the most watched Cy-Hawk game of all time and Murph looks over the ratings of all games from Saturday. Then after the Quickie Poll and What's Bugging Andy the guys do Whose Birthday? and remember Norm Macdonald including his famous Iowa story. Andy reads a variety of people's reactions to that performance before hitting us with More! Throwdowns finishes the hour.

The guys continue rolling on to reacting to the Cy-Hawk Game (and a little NFL) taking a ton of calls and listening to fans from both sides discuss where they think their programs are, why GameDay helped Iowa on Saturday and if the Hawkeyes were disrespected. There is also quite a bit of talk regarding the quarterback situations in Iowa City and Ames and if any changes should or need to be made.
The streak extends to 6 for the Iowa in the CyHawk series. Saturday boasted the biggest game between ISU and Iowa in the history of the matchup and the it didn't disappoint if you were wearing black and gold. We all know that through 2 games the defense has played out of their mind, we discuss why that may be the case and why their confidence will only continue to grow. Special teams was huge on Saturday, even more than people think, and we talk about why Tory Taylor and Charlie Jones are literally changing the game for the Hawkeyes. Spencer Petras took another step or 2 in proving that he is the guy. We talk about the 3 throws that end the discussion on if he is a true gamer or not, however why is he taking sacks on 3rd down? We have a couple answers to that question and explain why we are optimistic. We address the teams glaring weakness in the offensive line and what we think Schott returning to the lineup could do for production. Ohio St. lost to Oregon and showed for the 2nd straight week that they are not the team that OSU usually puts on the field, and this of course leaves the top of the Big Ten more open than usual. We talk the Hawks resume, best in the country, and why this team could be special. Kevin makes an All-Time cameo from his Las Vegas hotel room, Drake rants of course, the F-bomb fund is fully loaded, and the Walkons have a HUGE bounce back week in betting picks for week 2!

Texas falls on the road to Arkansas. Sound the alarm on Texas A&M being a top 5 team after the Aggies escaped Colorado with a 10-7 win. A lot of teams played bad football on Saturday including USC & Florida State. Clay Helton is on the hotseat for the 4th straight season. Then we dive into the Hawkeyes and the Cyclones coming up on Saturday afternoon in Ames. […]
The guys kick off another hour of heavy college football talk including the latest with the hatred between the Hawkeyes and Cyclones. Nick Saban gets his moment in the sun as we listen to how he wasn't too thrilled with how Alabama practiced this week. And in fake news Gary Barta allegedly puts out a cease and desist on a color the University of Iowa discovered. To end the hour Ross and Zamora preview tonight's Cowboys at Buccaneers game, talk about the Rays and Dodgers new smart move in baseball, and put together the BetRivers Parlay.
The guys talk all things college football and get heavily into the weeds with all things college football and the Cy-Hawk game. Then comedian and The Late Show host Stephen Colbert may have gone too far with a joke regarding the Kinnick Wave and the University of Iowa Children's Hospital.
