Free bowel screening is now available to everyone aged 59 to 70. However, the Irish Cancer Society has expressed concern at low bowel screening uptake... To find out more, Peter O'Connell was joined by Mary Woods, who hails from Newmarket-on-Fergus and survived both womb and bowel cancer and Policy and Campaigns Manager at Irish Cancer Society, Emma Harte. On Ask Win today (Wednesday, December 19, 2018), Best-Selling Author, Win C welcomes Zack Scriven. Zack is a 26 year old father, fianc©, real estate investor, and entrepreneur by heart. He grew up in Upland, California where he gained experience at an early age in the Control System Integration industry working for his parents company. By the age of 21 he had dropped out of college to become the lead system integrator delivering projects for the company. Shortly after he purchased the company from his mother and was a solo business owner for several years. Zack has a passionate and outgoing personality. For example he met his fianc©e Mary Woods who is a flight attendant while she was at work. The two instantly hit it off and became partners. After a year of dating Zack and Mary were blessed with a baby on the way. Zack took this life changing event as an opportunity to better himself, his career, and his family. He closed down his company and took a job at an system integration firm. While the job had its perks and he was learning rapidly again being in a new environment around new people, Zack entrepreneurial itch began to grow.  Shortly after Mary and Zack welcomed their daughter Zoë into the world they began welcoming guests from all over the world into their home. Zack began to scratch again his entrepreneurial itch by starting an Airbnb business with his partner Mary out of their spare bedroom. What first started as some extra income to support the couple through their maternity leave turned quickly into a thriving business and the two purchasing a rental property. Zack became an active member in the Short Term Rental University Community of hosts.  This not only helped guide them into becoming successful hosts and business owners but also uncovered a hidden passion of Zack for video content creation and community building. In early 2018, Zack began to get extremely unhappy with the 9-5 job that he was working. He began focusing his efforts on content creation by live streaming to YouTube daily, creating content for LinkedIn and launching a podcast named, The Zack Scriven Podcast.  By May he had built up enough momentum and following on LinkedIn that he quit his job to pursue content creation full time. He was able to monetize his new venture by creating a boutique marketing and personal branding agency, Zack Scriven Media. He has been able to help like-minded clients tell their story with video & audio, and reach their audience primarily LinkedIn. This has been extremely successful so far. One particular client he helped grow from 58 followers to 1,000 in a span of just a few months. In addition to the video content creation work, Zack has picked back up his engineering hat through the form of freelancing for clients on the popular site UpWork. If you haven’t noticed by know Zack tends to frequently change his interests which then he dives all into. This trait stems from what he has believes is Asperger's Syndrome. He says that depending on how his condition is managed, this can be his biggest strength or greatest weakness. What will Zack do next? Besides being interviewed on Ask Win Podcast, God only knows. Ultimately motivates Zack is challenging traditional thinking, creating a positive impact, and inspiring others to do the same. To learn more about Zack visit www.zackscriven.com.

A major shift is happening in how we view gender, sexuality and violence. Many people, like our guest Mary Woods, see echoes of the 60s civil rights movements in this modern era of protest and consciousness raising. But, many men feel confused about their place in these movements. In the stories we hear day after day, men are the perpetrators of the sexual violence, racial violence, and gun violence. Much of the conversation focuses on how to change men--and no doubt, change is needed. But, as Dan often says, “We can't just change what men think, we have to change what we think about men.” Change cannot happen when people are silenced or dismissed. The Women's Movement has had its success through teaching women how to understand the day-to-day mechanics of their oppression and the importance of speaking out against them. In order to speak out, they had to build a huge community of people who would lend their support and make it safe for them to speak out and take action. We have to do the same for men. In this episode Dan and Mary talk about the ways that we can support men as they confront the injustices of their socialization as men (i.e. be the biggest, the baddest, the richest, the meanest), wrestle with their relationships to power, and try to build a canal through the muddy waters of gender expectation.

Mary Woods is an artist, a poet, and the author of "The Heart of the Matter,” which guides the reader to becoming wholeheartedly happy. I know Mary through her service work with Beloved Community Council and Heart of Williamsport. We've worked on the HoW project for three years, and it's amazing to see the change of heart she's experienced as the project assistant. HoW's mission is to collect stories from our diverse community, identify what people value, and share this information to guide Williamsport’s future. Developed by the Orton Family Foundation, the Heart & Soul Community program empowers people to shape the future of their communities by improving local decision-making, creating a shared sense of belonging, and ultimately strengthening the social, cultural, and economic vibrancy of each place. It's a fuzzy concept, but after a few years of working together, we think we have it down pat. Mary does, at least. She's been talking to hundreds of people, one-on-one, with interviews and then follow-up conversations to develop clarity on what the people of Williamsport value. The amazing thing is, the program mirrors her book, which she authored years before HoW took over her life.  She describes the book as, the result of a willingness to listen to and follow her heart. Mary is married to David DeFebo. And you know I can relate to that. It is a spiritual message that transcends different beliefs and divisions, so that we can remember the love that unites us all. I enjoy working with Mary on local projects because she’s an optimist and is always kind. She’s obviously taking her own advice. Learn more about Mary's book on Amazon: "The Heart of the Matter" is an idea whose time has come. It is a simple, yet profound message that will hit a chord and resonate in your heart because it rings true. Like a children's book for adults, it is a fast and easy read, reminding grown ups of the innate wisdom that their inner child never forgot. This is a book about the whole heart that guides the reader to an experience of being wholeheartedly happy. It is a spiritual message that transcends different beliefs and divisions, so we can remember the love that unites us all at heart. Highlighted with original poems, as well as quotes from A Course In Miracles to Swami Beyondananda, it is an inspirational and heartfelt look at life that takes us to the very heart of the matter.
