Where The Bills 2024 Draft Class Stands, One Year Later

It's another edition of The Podbag on this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran responds to questions, comments and takes submitted by fans, consisting this week of all Buffalo Bills and including where the 2024 Bills draft class stands one year later. It's near impossible to tell if a draft class will ultimately pan out well or not after just one year and this past one was no exception, but there's certainly clues. Patrick discusses how opportunity still knocks big time for the first two picks, Keon Coleman and Cole Bishop and how they could carry roles significant to the success of the 2025 Bills. Conversely, even after just one year it's getting harder to see a clear path for third round pick Dewayne Carter getting consistent playing time after Brandon Beane traded up for defensive tackles two times in the first four rounds last week. Ray Davis seems pretty locked into the same role he had in 2024, at least for this season while the others from the 2024 class are pretty locked into roster depth, though Patrick has some decently high hopes for Javon Solomon. Also, the Bills signed wide receiver Elijah Moore on Wednesday and Patrick thinks it's a very good move, especially for this time of the offseason. It also alleviates or at least should some of the frustration of the Bills not taking a wide receiver before the seventh round last week and let's not forget—Moore just turned 25 years old.Patrick also responds to takes involving first-round cornerback Max Hairston, people who think trading up for TJ Sanders was dumb, if Damar Hamlin's roster spot could be in trouble and some perhaps going overboard on the Kansas City praising. That plus a few thoughts on yesterday's show with Bills superfan Tommy Parzymieso and much more. ♦♦♦♦♦Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's SubstackTwitter: @PatrickMoranTBBlue Sky: @PatrickMoranTB.bsky.socialInstagram: @PatrickMoranTBFacebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red'sat 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. Fundraising During Times of Disaster

In this episode of The First Day podcast, host Bill Stanczykiewicz, Ed.D., is joined by Patty McIlreavy, President and CEO of the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP), to discuss how charitable giving shifts during times of disaster. Patty begins by reframing the very concept of disaster—not as the event itself, like a hurricane or wildfire, but as the collision of an event with a community's vulnerability. This vulnerability, often rooted in systemic inequities, becomes the true disaster. CDP's mission is to mobilize philanthropy not just for immediate relief, but for long-term, equitable recovery—a mission that becomes increasingly critical as disasters grow in scale and frequency. Patty highlights the challenge of donor behavior during crises, noting how people are often moved to give in the immediate aftermath—when headlines are fresh and emotions run high. While this instant generosity (hello, $10 million in days after Damar Hamlin's collapse) is heartening, Patty stresses that lasting change happens in the quieter months after the spotlight fades. CDP is working to shift donor mindsets from short-term relief to long-term recovery by telling better stories, creating awareness around systemic vulnerabilities, and offering tools for donors to engage in sustained giving—through knowledge sharing or acting as a conduit for philanthropic investment. Throughout the conversation, Patty emphasizes the evolving role of fundraisers during crises. She encourages nonprofits, even those not directly involved in disaster response, to recognize their own relevance. A youth agency or cultural organization reducing community vulnerabilities? That's disaster recovery work too, she says. Rather than competing for donor dollars, organizations should “join up”—a call for collective action where legacy isn't just about bricks and plaques, but about investing in human resilience and community strength. And when funders struggle to navigate this complexity, CDP steps in with tools, funds, and a matchmaking service of sorts to connect donors with proximate, long-term recovery organizations. The episode wraps with a clear call to action: the philanthropic pie is still enormous, even if it's shifting. Fundraisers shouldn't fear being left out during crisis fundraising—they should see themselves as part of a bigger picture. As Bill notes, The Fund Raising School's own research supports this: fundraising can actually increase when done thoughtfully during crises. Patty's insights reinforce the importance of shifting from “hero moments” to holistic, community-centered recovery. With CDP's guidance and the right mindset, philanthropy can move beyond bandages and start building bridges—stronger, safer ones that can withstand whatever storm comes next.

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran dives into what the Buffalo Bills have done at cornerback so far this offseason and perhaps more importantly, what they will do at cornerback before the 2025 regular season begins.Brandon Beane has been busy adding to the defense so far during this free agency period, but those biggest additions have come on the defensive line where they've signed Joey Bosa, Michael Hoehct and Larry Ogunjobi. The safety position has also seen Damar Hamlin re-sign as well as the addition of Darrick Forrest. The cornerback position is starting to stick out as a need at this point, perhaps the team's biggest. The Bills did bring back Dane Jackson after letting him walk a year ago, but Rasul Douglas remains in free agent limbo and former first-round pick/bust Kaiir Elam was traded to Dallas. Whether Jackson ends up starting alongside Christian Benford, cornerback is in need of talent influx. Patrick talks about Benford, his thoughts on Jackson returning and three veteran free agent possibilities that could still happen, including Douglas.More than likely however, the Bills long term and perhaps immediate starting solution come come through the draft at the end of April. Patrick breaks down three prospects that could be very enticing to the Bills in the first round as well as three others who could be solid day two picks and contribute right away. That plus some NFL rule change proposals and more.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. Grading The Buffalo Bills Offseason So Far

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren from SB Nation to discuss and assign a grade for each part of the Buffalo Bills offseason through this point in addition to discussing the offseason for some AFC rivals. To say it's been an interesting offseason so far for the Bills may truly be an understatement. Props to anyone who had the Bills signing a Bosa in free agency and multiple defenders who will be suspended to start the season on their bingo cards, but here we are. Matt has plenty of thoughts on the Bills “swinging big” with Joey Bosa while Brandon Beane, rightfully so caught heat for inking Michael Hoecht and Larry Ogunjobi to deals despite pending suspensions, the former a situation Beane knew about. That's just a part of an eventful offseason. The Bills also extended three key young core players in addition to the big Josh Allen contract. That's discussed and evaluated as are a few re-signings including Ty Johnson and Damar Hamlin as well as a few more low key adds like Laviska Shenault, Dane Jackson and Darrick Forrest. The guys also evaluate and discuss how the rest of the AFC east has done during this period in addition to the Bengals ponying up for both their star receivers, the Chiefs having a very interesting offseason and plenty more.♦♦♦♦♦Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's SubstackTwitter: @PatrickMoranTBBlue Sky: @PatrickMoranTB.bsky.socialInstagram: @PatrickMoranTBFacebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast

That's led to many fans turning on him of sorts, and often suggesting the Bills should trade him since they're almost certainly not going to pay him the kind of money he's looking for. Patrick absolutely disagrees with pretty much any trade theory short of a team being stupid enough to overpay to the extent Brandon Beane can't refuse. While agreeing that Cook's snap percentage and a shortcoming or two of his leads to him not being deserving of the same type of money guys like Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry can command, he explains multiple reasons why he considers trading Cook completely foolish, even if this is his last year on the team. Also Patrick has thoughts on a listener calling the Bills signing of Joey Bosa the Baltimore equivalent of adding DeAndre Hopkins and worries that the Bosa move has Shawn Merriman vibes from more than a decade ago. That plus Keon Coleman being counted on to step up, Damar Hamlin returning to the Bills, Shaun Dolac showing on during his UB Pro Day and plenty more.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren of SB Nation to discuss the first three days of free agency for the Buffalo Bills and specifically what's become an overhaul of their defensive line following three significant additions. It wasn't exactly a secret that the Bills were going to look to improve a defensive line that was good at times in 2024 but also floundered too often as well, none more than last year's AFC championship game loss in Kansas City. Bills general manager Brandon Beane took some pretty big steps to try and improve the unit this week, signing Michael Hoecht on Monday before the big one, Joey Bosa on Tuesday and following it up with a third addition on Wednesday morning, Larry Ogunjobi. The guys break down all three moves and discuss what they like and don't like about them, and there's plenty of both on Bosa and Ogunjobi.Beane also addressed safety on Wednesday, bringing back Damar Hamlin on a one-year deal and also signing Darrick Forrest. Patrick thinks Hamlin being back is a reflection of an open market that rejected him, something Matt definitely disagrees with. With these moves plus the signing of Josh Palmer and re-signing of Ty Johnson earlier, it certainly appears the meat and potatoes of the Bills roster is set heading into NFL draft season next. That's with the exception of cornerback. Both guys have thoughts on where this roster stands as well as some reaction to happenings around the NFL and plenty more.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. These episodes are a favorite but hard to do regularly during the Bills season, between recap, game takeaways and preview shows. However with the season now officially over for Buffalo, fans have plenty to say and Patrick goes through a lot of submissions, some of which are overreactions and others pretty spot on. Among the things discussed is Sean McDermott's track record and how much of the blame he should receive for Buffalo's latest playoff failure against Kansas City. While Patrick thinks some of the takes on McDermott are too harsh and over the top, he's a lot more critical of Sean's coordinators that Patrick thinks dropped the ball in KC, Joe Brady and Bobby Babich. There's also some very harsh sentiments towards Dalton Kincaid addressed as well as wondering why the Bills don't utilize some of their wide receivers. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran shares all of his biggest takeaways after watching back the game film of the Buffalo Bills heartbreaking 32-29 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC championship game, failing to beat Kansas City in the playoffs for the fourth time in five years. There's simply no getting around it---the Bills losing a game they lead going into the fourth quarter is a bitter pill to have to swallow. To quote The Rolling Stones, "You can't always get what you want" and Patrick spends time at the beginning talking about how much this game meant to Bills fans all over the world, including a story of his son getting formally introduced to the cult of tortured Buffalo sports fans with this latest crushing loss. How did it happen? Well, Patrick has plenty of thoughts on several keys factors, beginning with his opinions that the Chiefs coached circles around the Bills staff---pointing out several specific examples. At the end of the day however, players gotta go and play and Patrick discusses several of them that picked the most inopportune time possible to have horrible games, including Dalton Kincaid, Greg Rousseau, Terrell Bernard and Damar Hamlin. Of course, it wouldn't be a close Chiefs game without some BS official decisions going their way and Patrick hits on a few of them, stating that while it's not the reason the Bills lost it's fair to say they directly swung the momentum of the game. That plus a few standouts on film, early feelings on putting the season in perspective and tons more. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Joe From Queens just minutes following the conclusion of the Buffalo Bills season falling short, again against the Kansas City Chiefs, 32-29 in the AFC championship. The discuss all of it, including a defense that yet again failed them in an elimination game, blown opportunities on the offensive side of the ball and guys simply not stepping up when it mattered most. Dalton Kincaid had a critical drop and also failed to pick up a first down earlier in a drive that mattered. Damar Hamlin was brutal, ditto for Kaiir Elam who looked like he had no business being on the field. Greg Rousseau had arguably the worst game of his Buffalo Bills career. The Bills couldn't use their unstoppable tush push successfully. In fact it arguably helped contribute to them losing the game. Of course, there was a controversial call that clearly went against Buffalo. Add it all up, and the Bills fall short again. Not going to lie and there's no getting around it--it's a sickening feeling. Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. Buffalo Bills Wild Card Round Biggest Talking Points

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by longtime friend Tone Pucks for the first time in a quite awhile for a conversation focused on the biggest talking points as the Buffalo Bills get ready for Denver in NFL wildcard round playoff action on Sunday. The episode is recorded live from Mooney's Sports Bar & Grill, 1531 Military Road. It's Tone's first time back on the show since the beginning of September before the Bills regular season started and after a few minutes it becomes obvious his intention is to highjack the show, They jump right into a talk surrounding several talking points and important factors as Buffalo readies for another playoff run-when Pucks is in the mood too. Among the topics is discussed at length is coming to the realization that if the Bills are truly Super Bowl contenders, fans and the media shouldn't be TOO concerned about facing a Denver team that while certainly good, hasn't been to the playoffs since 2015 and features a rookie quarterback, something Sean McDermott has historically feasted on. That said it would be shortsighted to not have any concerns. The guys talk about why Denver is clearly the best football team the Bills have faced in the wildcard round during the Josh Allen era and elements of the Bills that can be worrisome, such as being heavily reliant on takeaways with the defense and the tough task of taming a pretty ferocious Denver pass rush. That plus thoughts on McDermott going with Damar Hamlin over Cole Bishop at safety, Matt Milano sitting out the season finale last week, Bills X-factors for the game, a prediction from Tone Pucks and much more. Big thanks again to Mooney's Sports Bar & Grill for being a gracious host as well as great food and vibes. Easily one of the best places to go in the Kenmore/Tonawanda area for a good time. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast  Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter:  @PatrickMoranTB Blue Sky: @PatrickMoranTB.bsky.social Instagram: @PatrickMoranTB Facebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast  Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren of SB Nation for their weekly chat, this week focused on stepping back a little to appreciate the Buffalo Bills 2024 regular season before we get started with the suddenness of the NFL playoffs this weekend. When it gets to be this time of year, your season could end with just one less than stellar afternoon. That's the way it goes in single elimination tournaments. Patrick and Matt spend a good chunk time focusing on making sure to enjoy these past four months for the Buffalo Bills, especially considering what most people thought this campaign would look like for Buffalo. Patrick goes as far to call this one of his most enjoyable seasons following the Bills. To really appreciate the Bills the guys take a look at how the AFC east shockingly crumbled around Buffalo this year, especially with two teams that many thought were better than the Bills going into 2024, Miami and the New York Jets. They discuss how not only was this season brutal for the two but the short term future doesn't appear all that great right now either. From there Matt has plenty of thoughts on Buffalo drawing Denver in the wildcard round. They also talk about Damar Hamlin being named starter by Sean McDermott earlier this week to squash any potential starting safety controversy, thoughts on the rest of the playoffs and plenty more. Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren of SB Nation for plenty of Buffalo Bills and NFL talk on the final episode of Talking Buffalo for 2024. The Bills are locked into the second seed in the AFC after smashing the Jets last Sunday and will surely be resting most of their starters in Sunday's finale at Foxboro on Sunday. Of course, the Patriots are currently locked into to the first pick of the 2025 NFL draft so their incentive to win may not be the greatest either. Still, there's plenty of worthy talking points surrounding Buffalo and how this week gets handled and beyond. Among them discussed is linebacker Matt Milano, who Patrick think played far and away the best of his four games against New York last week. Matt Warren has thoughts on if the version we saw on Sunday is good enough to feel confident in starting over Dorian Williams in the wildcard round when the playoffs begin. Both also have thoughts on how much if at all Milano should play against the Patriots--weighing one final tune up against the chance of getting hurt again. The guys also hit on Von Miller playing very well last week, Mack Hollins continuing to be a great addition to the team, potential concern about Damar Hamlin's prolonged absence and if they're getting Josh Allen vs Lamar Jackson for MVP debate fatigue. That plus projecting what Bills will make the Pro Bowl, some of their favorite 2024 NFL storylines around the league and much more. Hope everyone listening has a blessed 2025! On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News to discuss Micah Hyde signing to the Buffalo Bills practice squad and also revisiting some summer Bills talking points in addition to ranting on the Buffalo Sabres after their epic home ice meltdown Tuesday night. It had been rumored going all the way back to training camp and finally became a reality on Tuesday as longtime Bills safety Micah Hyde officially signed with the Bills practice squad. On the surface it seems the 33-year old will be more of a factor with his leadership off the field than on it. Jay has thoughts on whether it'll take an injury(s) to see Hyde end up actually playing for the Bills, what he thinks he brings to the table this late in the season and what if anything it means for Damar Hamlin. The guys also revisit Jay being on the show alongside Nate Geary shortly before the Bills regular season starting and talking about how one of the best things the team had going for them was a lot of people counting them out, not to mention Josh Allen being voted the most overrated player in the NFL. Spoiler alert---he's not and just won another AFC Offensive Player of the Week award as well. Jay may cover the Bills for a living but he's also a Sabres fan and frustrated one at that. They go over that historic Buffalo home collapse against Colorado a few nights ago, the first time in franchise history the Sabres blew a 4-0 lead at home. Among other things, Jay talks about feeling sorry for head coach Lindy Ruff. That and plenty more! On this episode of Talking Buffalo it's another edition of The Podbag, where the audience controls the narrative and topics with their comments and questions submitted through social media, with a heavy emphasis of course on the Buffalo Bills and their blazing 9-2 start. As one regular to the show points out, Josh Allen is putting together a strong MVP caliber season despite not having the elite stats he's had in seasons past. Patrick Moran explains why Josh is at the top of his game and sticking with the stats not telling the whole story narrative, James Cook looks like a much better running back this year compared to last despite being on pace for less rushing yards, receptions, receiving yards and yards per carry than 2023. Of course, finding the end zone on the ground 10 times in 10 games is a big reason why. Patrick's also asked about Matt Milano's return and one listener wary of the impact he'll have. There's also a segment detailing the job Damar Hamlin's done, what if anything to expect from Cole Bishop, Taron Johnson being on top of his game and someone throws out a potential Bills free agent Patrick's got zero interest in. That plus has Sean McDermott finally turned the corner for good, would Terry Pegula ever sell the Buffalo Sabres in a scenario where the team would then relocate and much more. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast  Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter:  @PatrickMoranTB Facebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast  Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren of SB Nation for their weekly chat, this time focusing on some of the biggest Buffalo Bills talking points as they hit their bye week at 9-2. It's a surprise to most and maybe even the Bills themselves that they find themselves with nine wins through their first 11 games. The guys talk about that and if there were any doubts about if this team was legitimately good, that got answered in a big way with their validation win over Kansas City this past Sunday. Did that win put Josh Allen among the biggest frontrunners for MVP and is Sean McDermott in the mix for NFL Coach of the Year? Also, Matt Milano is close to returning and the guys talk about how they think McDermott may deploy him back on the field. This also feels like the week if the Bills are going to reach out to Micah Hyde, but do the Bills even need to upgrade the spot over Damar Hamlin? In fact, is Hyde even an upgrade? Matt also has thoughts on Von Miller still showing plenty of juice, a bunch of younger players taking their game to the next level being a huge key to Buffalo's success through this point and much more.
