1. Supreme Court Tariff Decision A predicted 5–4 ruling upholding presidential tariff authority was incorrect; the Court ruled 6–3 against the administration’s use of one specific tariff statute (AIPA). Majority held that the statute allowed banning imports but not charging tariffs—a conclusion strongly criticized in the dissents (Kavanaugh, Thomas). Despite the ruling, the impact is expected to be limited, as the President has multiple other statutes still available to impose tariffs. A new 10–15% tariff was quickly announced using alternate legal authority. The administration still retains broad power using: Section 338 (1930 Tariff Act) – allows tariffs up to 50% for discriminatory treatment. Section 122 (Trade Act of 1974) – 15% tariffs for 150 days (renewable). Section 301 (Trade Act of 1974) – addresses unfair foreign trade practices. Section 232 (Trade Expansion Act of 1962) – tariffs for national‑security threats. Section 201 (Trade Act of 1974) – safeguard tariffs for import surges. Litigation may unfold for years, potentially costing billions over refunded or contested tariffs. China and Democrats were portrayed as celebrating the ruling, implying political dimension rather than policy substance. Administration aims to use tariffs as leverage for better trade deals, not as permanent protectionism. 2. State of the Union (SOTU) Speech Impact Speech viewed as effective, more disciplined, and likely helpful for midterm momentum. Highlighted major administration achievements: Border control and sharp decline in illegal crossings. Crime reductions (e.g., murder and overdose rates reportedly down by ~20%). Economic relief themes like no tax on tips and overtime. Strong emotional moments involving veterans, Olympians, and American heroes created bipartisan resonance. Speaker Johnson and congressional Republicans portrayed as unusually unified. Coordination with the President seen as stronger than in previous cycles. 3. The Olympic Contrast: Alysa Liu vs. Eileen Gu Alysa Liu Daughter of a Chinese refugee who fled Tiananmen Square. Target of CCP intimidation and espionage on U.S. soil. Required 24/7 FBI protection before the Beijing Olympics. Despite pressure, competed for Team USA and won gold. Story framed as patriotic, resilient, and emotionally powerful. Eileen Gu Also U.S.-born with Chinese heritage. Chose to compete for China after being offered substantial financial incentives. Criticism focused on choosing a communist regime over the U.S., though the speakers avoided personal attacks. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. Local power shapes daily life—from classrooms and bus routes to rent, taxes, and second chances in the courtroom. At the Western Wake Dems forum, we listened closely as five Wake County Commissioner candidates and a District Attorney contender laid out what's at stake on the primary ballot and how their choices would ripple across every neighborhood. This episode isn't about sound bites; it's about taking the time to hear how each candidate thinks, prioritizes, and would lead if elected—on schools facing voucher expansion and federal cuts, housing stability as a prerequisite for student success, and public health systems stretched by SNAP reductions and mental health gaps. The conversation sharpens around transportation and land use—building housing near existing infrastructure, protecting tree canopy, and accelerating the Wake County Transit Plan—along with safe routes to school, Vision Zero coordination, and property tax relief for seniors. In the District Attorney segment, trust and accountability take center stage, with a clear focus on prosecutorial experience—why it matters in a role that carries immense discretion, and the reality that not all candidates bring it to the table. Commitments to equal justice, constitutional policing, and reducing jail crowding by diverting nonviolent cases into services that address root causes underscore the contrasts. Two votes for County Commissioner. One vote for District Attorney. Clear differences, practical ideas, and real urgency—meant to help you listen carefully, compare leadership styles, and feel informed before you cast your ballot.2026 Voters' Guide for Southern Wake County-pgs. 23 & 35-Candidate WebsitesVoter Information (Register, Am I Registered?, Election Information) Voter Info (Designated Polling Places, Sample Ballots, Registration Status, Voting Jurisdiction, Verify Address and Party Affiliation) Election Information (Absentee by Mail Voting, Early Voting, Election Day Voting) Closest Early Voting Locations February 12-28WE Hunt Recreation Center-Holly SpringsHilltop Needmore Town Park Clubhouse-Fuquay VarinaELECTION DAY Tuesday, March 3 from 6:30 AM to 7:30 PMSupport the showAs always, if you are interested in being on or sponsoring the podcast or if you have any particular issues, thoughts, or questions you'd like explored on the podcast, please email NCDeepDive@gmail.com. SNAKE CATCHER SURVIVES EASTERN BROWN BITE Colleague Jeremy Zakis. The risks of the Australiansummer are highlighted by the ironic near-death experience of Michaela, a professional snake catcher who was bitten by a deadly Eastern Brown snake while off-duty and barefoot in her own garden. Although her organs began to shut down from the venom, she received antivenom within the crucial "golden hour" and is expected to survive and return to work. This incident underscores the "macho" culture among snake catchers, who often wear flip-flops and shorts as a "badge of honor," believing their understanding of the environment is sufficient protection. However, there are physical limits to this career; medical wisdom suggests a human body usually cannot withstand more than three bites from a brown snake, often forcing professionals to move into administrative roles to avoid a fatal fourth strike. Financially, a standard house call for snake removal costs approximately $120, though insurance policies generally do not cover snake-related issues. NUMBER 2

President Xi Jinping has underlined the need for Beijing and Seoul to stand firm on the right side of history and make correct strategic choices amid the transformation and turbulence of the international landscape.Xi made the remarks on Monday during his talks with Republic of Korea President Lee Jae-myung at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. With a large business delegation, Lee started a four-day state visit to China on Sunday, the first since he took office in June and the first trip by an ROK president to China since 2019. Xi held a grand welcoming ceremony for him before their official talks.Xi said that both China and the ROK bear important responsibilities in maintaining regional peace and promoting global development, and they have broad common interests.Over 80 years ago, China and the ROK made great national sacrifices to achieve victory in the battle against Japanese militarism, and today, they should join hands to safeguard the outcomes of World War II and protect peace and stability in Northeast Asia, he said.Noting that China and the ROK are beneficiaries of economic globalization, he underscored the need for them to jointly oppose protectionism, practice true multilateralism, and contribute to advancing an equal and orderly multipolar world and universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization.Xi highlighted the close economic ties between the two countries, saying they have developed deeply intertwined industrial and supply chains and mutually beneficial cooperation. The two countries should strengthen the alignment of development strategies and policy coordination, expand their shared interests, and create more cooperation achievements in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, green industries and the silver economy, he said.Xi noted that China always places its relationship with the ROK as a priority in its neighborhood diplomacy and maintains consistency and stability in its policy toward the ROK.He emphasized that both countries are peace-loving and have long adhered to the principles of "harmony without uniformity", and they have transcended differences in social systems and ideologies to achieve mutual success and common development. Both sides should continue this fine tradition, continuously enhance mutual trust, respect each other's development paths of their own choice, accommodate each other's core interests and major concerns, and resolve differences through dialogue and consultation, Xi said.China is willing to work with the ROK to firmly hold on to the direction of friendly cooperation, uphold the principle of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, and promote their strategic cooperative partnership along a healthy trajectory in order to enhance the well-being of the two peoples and contribute to regional and global peace and development, Xi said.Lee said that his country attaches great importance to its relationship with China and wishes to use this first head-of-state diplomacy of the new year as an opportunity to consolidate the momentum of the comprehensive recovery and development of ROK-China relations and jointly open a new chapter in the development of bilateral relations. The ROK respects China's core interests and major concerns and adheres to the one-China principle, he said, emphasizing the important role of economic and trade ties between the two countries. After the talks, the two heads of state witnessed the signing of 15 cooperation documents in fields such as scientific and technological innovation, the environment, transportation, and economic and trade cooperation. The talks followed the leaders' meeting in Gyeongju in early November, when Xi made a state visit to the ROK and attended the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders'Meeting.Observers said that China and the ROK, two major economies in the Asia-Pacific region, face a shared responsibility to promote stability and confidence in the region. Lee's China visit offers an opportunity to consolidate the positive trajectory of bilateral ties and chart a clearer course for the future, they said.Economic ties continue to serve as the cornerstone of the countries' relationship. For over two decades, China has been the ROK's largest trading partner, while the ROK stands as one of China's most important economic partners.Lee Chang-ho, chairman of the civil group Korea-China Exchange Promotion Committee, told China Daily that it is important for the ROK and China to jointly enhance the strategic role of building peace in Northeast Asia through the institutionalization of regular shuttle diplomacy between the two countries.

In our last story, we shared how leaders with the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde's treatment and recovery services say they are making strides in opioid addiction treatment. That includes work through Great Circle Recovery in Oregon. The tribe also provides transitional housing services through Main Street Recovery, a program with supportive housing, which also helps address mental health and addiction services on site. Kelly Rowe is the Executive Director of Health Services for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. “Instead of having to go to a facility where you might get 21 days or 28 days, that’s really been something that is more prescribed by insurance than it really is for the best thing for a person to have we’re not putting a limit on that. We’re saying what is good for you is what we want you to do. We’re letting them stay as long as they need to get well. So that’s become another piece in the continuum of care for us. So, we’re really working hard to make sure people can get well and we’re creating a whole community of recovery here at the reservation.” Culture is a key aspect in the services says Jennifer Worth, the Operations Director for Main Street Recovery. “Being able to provide that that holistic approach with access to mental health and substance use and kind of figuring out what the needs are and being able to tailor that to each person that comes through … there’s lots of activities and different things that we’re able to take the residents to. So for instance, tomorrow they’re going to be working on making paddles. And the other day they came in and they had been part of this carving class and they had all carved this ladle that’s going to be used for a future service that we’ll be adding on site at Main Street. So, things like that are really important.” Brian Krehbiel is a canoe maker who teaches paddle making and canoeing. “The canoe has just brought back so much our way of life all around the canoe. That bucket line that we feel when we’re all pulling together, we’re all going forward, we’re all making that forward movement and it helps with our noggins. If you should need it, if you don’t, you’re good. But if you should need some help of motivation and pushing you forward and to do try new things, however that is, that are good for you and it’s wicked fun.” For people on their mental health and recovery journey having trusted support is of great value says Sydney Clark a recovering addict and Peer Support Specialist Supervisor with the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. “I walk with them, letting them know that they’re not alone in that it’s okay to reach out. It’s okay to feel scared and it’s okay to question things because I didn’t know what I could question and what I couldn’t question and go into meetings having someone sit there with you that might know those questions to ask because that trauma that you’re going through right then and there … I’ve always loved helping people because it helps feed my soul … to be able to learn what would help us grow as a tribe. And each one of us play a big role in peer support, helps get people walk through a door that they normally probably would have never ever walked through.” Highlighted throughout the services is the resilience of Indigenous people, says Rowe. “My hope is that we can get out of this cycle of seeking out artificial substance to hide our pain, to hide our trauma that we’re not afraid to let that out and to seek out our cultural ways to heal ourselves … for us, especially health and wellness, it becomes this this plan of no matter who you are, at what stage of life you’re in, we’re here for you and we want you to be able to become a part of something bigger and that when you’re ready, we’re here for you.” This story is a collaboration with First Nations Experience Television with support from the Public Welfare Foundation. Elaine Ellingham, President and CEO of Omai Gold Mines Corp. (TSXV: OMG) (OTCQB: OMGGF), joins me for a special video podcast including a comprehensive exploration update expanding upon the updated Resource Estimate of 6.5 million ounces of gold in all categories, from the combined Wenot and Gilt Creek Projects at the Company's 100%-owned Omai Gold Project in Guyana, South America. The Omai Property hosts two orogenic gold deposits: the shear-hosted Wenot Deposit and the adjacent intrusive-hosted Gilt Creek Deposit, with a combined updated MRE of: 2,121,000 ounces of gold (Indicated MRE), averaging 2.07 g/t Au in 31.9Mt & 4,382,000 ounces of gold (Inferred MRE), averaging 1.95 g/t Au in 69.6Mt Multiple drills have been turning up until this week, with over 79 drill holes that have been completed to date this year, totaling 35,300 meters from the current exploration program at the Omai Gold property. All these coming drill assays released and still waiting on results from the lab will then factor into updated project Resource Estimate that will be incorporated into the upcoming Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) in Q2 of 2026. This updated Preliminary Economic Assessment will be building upon the prior PEA that was released in 2024, which was only on 45% of the mineral inventory focused on the open-pit at Wenot. That prior PEA did not yet include rest of the resources there at Wenot, nor did it include the underground project economics Gilt Creek. The updated PEA slated for early next year will be much more advanced and will factor in the combined economics of the open-pit at Wenot, and the underground at Gilt Creek, representing the value proposition of the total project more accurately. Highlights from the recent drill holes include: Hole 25ODD-142 (East Wenot) – 11.07 g/t Au over 14.7m, including 34.31 g/t Au over 4.3m Hole 25ODD-145W (Central Wenot) – 13.54 g/t Au over 13.3m, including 27.82 g/t Au over 6.2m, and including 63.17 g/t Au over 2.2m Next we reviewed the results from the very long hole, over 2,000 meters in length, that was drilled through the underground deposit at Gilt Creek over into the area deep under the Wenot deposit. The geological thesis held up proving that there is also deep sheer resources well below the known mineralization at Wenot. Highlighted higher grade zones from the upper part of hole 25ODD–122w include: 1.06 g/t Au over 708.1 meters (from 364.9) includes: 1.78 g/t Au over 46.2m (from 635.6 downhole), which includes 4.88 g/t Au over 7.0m (from 566.3m) 1.32 g/t Au over 99.2m (from 702.0m), which includes 5.7 g/t Au over 8.0m (from 766.9m) 3.10 g/t Au over 24.0m (from 395.5m) 1.99 g/t Au over 32.0m (from 462.0m) 2.98 g/t Au over 17.8m (from 643.8m) 2.04 g/t Au over 43.2m (from 952.2m) Wrapping up we discussed the company valuation compared to peers on a P/NAV basis, metallurgical testing, permitting process, and other derisking work on the Project, gathering data to be utilized in the upcoming PEA. AI, Cyber Attacks, and Nuclear Deterrence. Peter Huessy discusses the challenges to nuclear deterrence posed by AI and cyber intrusions. General Flynn highlighted that attacks on satellites, the backbone of deterrence, could prevent the US from confirming where a launch originated. Huessy emphasizes the need to improve deterrence, noting that the US likely requires presidential authorization for retaliation, unlike potential Russian "dead hand" systems. The biggest risk is misinformation delivered by cyber attacks, although the US maintains stringent protocols and would never launch based solely on a computer warning.
Climate Change, Indigenous Demands, and Governance Challenges in the Amazon. Ernesto Araújo discusses how indigenous leaders at COP 30 highlighted demands tied to environmental issues in the Amazon, which spans many countries. Poverty drives illegal activities, like logging and mining, even on indigenous lands (14% of Brazilian territory), which are often exploited through bribery and organized crime. While Lula speaks of protecting the Amazon, deforestation and indigenous health figures remain poor. The complex solution requires enforcing existing laws and focusing on establishing law and order to fight pervasive corruption. 1958

CBS EYE ON THE WORLD WITH JOHN BATCHELOR 11-6-25 THE SHOW BEGINS IN THE DOUBTS ABOUT VENEZUELA. FIRST HOUR 9-915 Anatol Lieven discusses the institutionalization of the Ukraine war, highlighted by children being trained to fly drones in classrooms. This blend of new technology and old societal militarization creates a "bloodless war" perception, potentially making conflict psychologically easier. He also addresses the argument that "stagnating states" are militarizing to maintain power, fueling conflicts and reasserting spheres of influence (a "new economic Monroe Doctrine"). The US is critically involved, enabling Ukrainian targeting capabilities. 915-930 Anatol Lieven discusses the institutionalization of the Ukraine war, highlighted by children being trained to fly drones in classrooms. 930-945 Chris Riegel discusses how artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are transforming labor, citing modest IBM layoffs but predicting heavy impacts in large retail. Advanced robotics in Chinese auto manufacturing drives cost efficiency, and AI combined with robotics enhances manufacturing capability. While seeing demand, Riegel notes characteristics of a bubble, especially in wildly overvalued stock prices, fueled by vast investment in AI data centers. In QSRs and retail, AI adoption is driven by efficiency and, in places like California, high minimum wages. 945-1000 Mary Anastasia O'Grady discusses the strong US military presence near Venezuela, intended to pressure dictator Nicolás Maduro to leave. While the opposition (led by elected President González) is ready to govern, the Trump administration hesitates due to security concerns. The major risk is chaos: following Maduro's exit, drug cartels (like Cartel de los Soles) and other groups (like ELN and Tren de Aragua) might fight dissident generals, leading to instability rather than a smooth transition to democracy. SECOND HOUR 10-1015 Joel Finkelstein discusses how the New York election of socialist Zohran Mamdani was influenced by "subnationalism," where foreign nations subvert democracy. Organizations associated with Islamist Maoist ideals and CCP assets (like Neville Roy Singham, who bankrolled a campaign hub) were central to mobilizing votes. On social media, especially Instagram and TikTok, content favorable to Mamdani was given "engineered virality," with over 50% of viral engagement coming from non-American users, suggesting organized foreign intercession. 1015-1030 Ahmad Fouad Alkhatib discusses the high probability of renewed conflict in Gaza, arguing that the ceasefire is fragile due to Hamas's malign intentions. He estimates Hamas's combat-effective forces are significantly lower than reported (3,000 to 5,000, versus 15,000 to 30,000), noting Hamas pays fighters $20 to $25 a day. He also challenges polls showing widespread Gazan support for Hamas, arguing such results are manipulated and defy logic given the catastrophe following October 7. Disarmament is crucial for any future political process. 1030-1045 Ahmad Fouad Alkhatib argues that disarmament must precede any credible political process in Gaza, citing Hamas's use of medical facilities like Shifa and Nasser hospitals for interrogations and military activities. He criticizes Turkey and Qatar for using Hamas as a bargaining chip for regional leverage, suggesting they now posture Hamas as a potential security guarantor against ISIS. Alkhatib also suggests using Private Military Contractors (PMCs) as an enforcement force to actively fight Hamas and secure territory, given diminishing faith in an International Stabilization Force. 1045-1100 Gregg Roman details Turkey and Qatar's strategy to establish regional hegemony across "five fronts" by replacing the Shia Crescent. Turkey, providing military manpower, and Qatar, providing the budget, are active in Gaza, southern Lebanon, Syria, and Djibouti. Their plan includes securing maritime supremacy in the Eastern Mediterranean via an agreement with Libya and extending air power over Syrian airspace. Erdoğan seeks plausible deniability by empowering Syrian jihadis to attack the Golan Heights and is building bases in Djibouti and Somalia. THIRD HOUR 1100-1115 Professor Evan Ellis discusses Argentina's economic stabilization under President Milei, who resisted dollarization by bringing the peso to a stable, free-market rate through aggressive spending cuts and US/IMF support. This success under the new US "economic Monroe Doctrine" sends a strong signal to the Americas, aimed at countering China's rapid expansion. Ellis also reviews US military readiness near Venezuela and political shifts toward the center-right in Bolivia and potentially Chile, though these nations remain economically engaged with China. 1115-1130 Professor Evan Ellis discusses Argentina's economic stabilization under President Milei, who resisted dollarization by bringing the peso to a stable, free-market rate through aggressive spending cuts and US/IMF support. FOURTH HOUR 12-1215 Veronique de Rugy critiques the administration's legal argument at the Supreme Court that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) authorizes the President to impose tariffs. She argues the term "emergency" is used too loosely, defining 50 years of trade deficits as an emergency, potentially granting the President immense, unchecked power to tax. Tariffs are taxes, which Congress should control. De Rugy notes tariffs are already causing damage by raising prices for consumers or forcing companies to cut profits and investment. 1215-1230 Alan Tonelson discusses the Supreme Court oral arguments concerning the President's authority to impose tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The administration argues the President can invoke IEEPA due to emergencies like fentanyl and trade deficits. Tonelson finds arguments against including tariffs under IEEPA's regulatory language "jaw-dropping." He stresses that the President must have sole control over declaring foreign policy emergencies, necessary for rapid response. If rejected, the President has other longstanding tariffing powers. 1230-1245 Dr. AJ Kolhari discusses Russia's successful test of the nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile, which flew 14,000 km for 15 hours. The missile captures and compresses air, heating it over a nuclear reactor to create thrust. Kolhari emphasizes the danger because it flies low (50 to 100 m) and is hard to detect. He notes this nuclear propulsion technology, or similar ramjet designs, could revolutionize commercial travel and be applied to flight on Mars, using its CO₂ atmosphere for heating. 1245-100 AM Conrad Black discusses Canadian politics and trade, noting a misunderstanding between Prime Minister Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford regarding an anti-tariff ad that offended President Trump. Black reports that China's General Secretary Xi has been conciliatory toward both Canada and the US. Crucially, Canada needs pipelines built both east, west (Trans Mountain to Vancouver/Pacific), and south (Keystone XL) to move Alberta's oil. Carney's federal government tentatively agreed to approve a second pipeline to Northern British Columbia.
