Epi 218: “Lest we Forget: INXS Hero Moments”!

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 25, 2025 64:34

Late April and May is a special time in Australia, the UK and the USA where we commemorate our returned soldiers and remember those who fought so bravely to provide the freedom we deeply appreciate and enjoy today. Lest we forget. Inspiring us with loyalty, mateship and bravery, a little band of brothers from the Northern Beaches of Sydney channeled the courage of our war heroes to traverse the globe with no guarantees, promises or favours to become the biggest band on the planet between 1988-1990 with style, sacrifice and substance. In no way are we comparing the ultimate sacrifice of our war heroes to INXS however the DNA of true Aussie mateship, loyalty, commitment perseverance were traits INXS drew upon when many other bands before them disappeared after so much promise. So Bee and I count down individually our “Top 7 moments” when INXS bravely fought against the odds, self-doubt and industry challenges to usurp their contemporaries such as Dire Straits, U2, The Police, Simple Minds and Duran Duran to become the biggest band in the world. Typically our lists vary but the sentiment and unabashed pride in INXS' achievements evoke similarly. So sit back and take a moment to enjoy the characteristics and attributes that created INXS' success not just the outcomes. As we wish the world a Happy Easter, we thought what better occasion for INXS: Access all Areas to deep dive on that pop culture touchstone of highlighting INXS' very own Easter Eggs, that being the trail of cultural touchstones they have left behind over some 48 years. As with movies, books and music, artists often leave a trail and footprint in the cultural zeitgeist through multiple platforms such as movies, lyrics, sports and film clips and INXS are no different. So Bee and I have great fun in this episode locating these cool little nuggets in some obvious and obscure places. We kick things off, pardon the pun at the peak of INXS' international fame between 1987-1990 and divert into the world of movie and TV soundtracks. We then take a left turn to sports and bring it home with something more ethereal like religion, faith and spirituality. All whilst not taking ourselves too seriously!!! So for all of you adults out there who seem to miss out on the Easter Bunny chocolate fix, sit back and get your own very dose and dollop of INXS Easter Eggs!! With the pending May 9th release of the 40th anniversary Deluxe Edition of Listen Like Thieves, Bee and Haydn couldn't wait to provide their listeners around the globe a deep dive preview into the formats, track listings, special features and bonus material. But before we do, we revisit and discuss the original 1985 album release in all of its glory as the album represented INXS' first genuine international commercial success spearheaded by the infectious funk groove of “What you Need” that soared up the charts providing the musical template of things to come. Listen Like Thieves seemed like a guitar tour-de-force response to the perceived over- produced but iconic and brilliant The Swing album, re-creating the “live sound” that Producer, Chris Thomas, wanted to encapsulate. With tracks like Good & Bad Times, This Time and the eponymous title track, this mission was achieved. The 40th anniversary Deluxe Edition release features the brilliant Giles Martin and Paul Hicks on production, remixing and engineering duties utilize the modern Atmos Dolby Mix, brilliant liner notes by famed music journalist Paul Sexton and a remastering of the forgotten but famed Royal Albert Hall gig INXS performed in unison with the BBC. Listen like Thieves vs Elegantly Wasted Time to get back to the music that filled our heads, hearts & eardrums over the years with our song showdown episode. With the 28th anniversary of Elegantly Wasted single upon us, the Bee contends that it's the greatest INXS song that namesakes an album title. Haydn, takes the contrary view that Listen Like Thieves is the greatest single release that namesakes an actual album release. “So Houston, we have a problem” that requires a deep dive debate with opposing thoughts, views and opinions. Etched in pour collective minds and souls, both tracks managed to traverse INXS' recording career at starkly different times. Listen like Thieves, the last ever single released that was a full band songwriting compilation and Elegantly Wasted, recorded uniquely in Ireland at a time post a Michael & Andrew night out on the town with Bono from U2. Either way, both songs serve as a signpost of INXS' incredible versatility in musicianship and songwriting. With a catalogue as extensive as INXS', there was bound to be moments in time when certain songs captured the zeitgeist attention of the music buying public and critics. Look no further than January 28th, 1988 when a humble hard working sextet from Australia hit number one on the Billboard Charts with Need You Tonight. A song, that now, sounds so familiar, crisp and radio friendly but then, a new modern twist on funk, soul and pop with sound production so cutting edge, every breath, ooh and aah sounded like Michael Hutchence was singing it to you directly from your living room. Combined with an innovative, breathtaking and cutting edge video clip, Need you Tonight put INXS into the stratosphere of superstardom and success. MTV awards ensued, world tours were booked and the album Kick had the necessary momentum to spawn 4 subsequent hit singles and international acclaim. Five years later in February 1993, a less prominent and commercially successful track was released as the fifth single to Welcome to Wherever You are, namely Beautiful Girl. A self-penned track by Andrew Farriss as an ode to new fatherhood, this restrained, mellow and resonant song showcased a maturity, subtlety and consciousness to both the INXS writing and recording process. Charting steadily if not spectacularly, the film clip by Mark Pellington of U2 and Pearl Jam fame would garner a Grammy nomination for Best Video of the Year losing out to Peter Gabriel's “Steam” clip. That aside, the social conscious messaging of the clip resonated nicely with the lyrical content whilst Michael's channeling of Lou Reed, circa The Velvet Underground era only added to its worthiness. So sit back and reminisce as we step back in time and honour two distinct but two important songs in the INXS catalogue that still resonate 37 and 32 years later respectively. Full of insightful anecdotes and unique moments in time, Mal recounts the early days when Tim, Kirk and Garry collaborated and set out on their musical journey with ambition, work ethic and inspiring drive. Mal shares fascinating moments when the band got to record at ABC Studios, a venue INXS would go on to use on many occasions in the future plus the crossover circumstances of another pre INXS outfit, namely Dr Dolphin. Effusive in his praise for Tim, Kirk and Garry, it came as no surprise to him to see them reach the summit of the global music scene, hence was their inner commitment to making it work. INXS: Access all Areas bring to you the most difficult of episodes since our Michael Hutchence funeral episode as we tackle Part Two of the Never Tear Us Apart Mini-Series circa 2014. That part of the INXS journey where Director Daina Reid tackles the wilderness years and unraveling of the band dynamic. Exhilarated but humbled by conquering the UK and European market culminating with the legendary Wembley gig in July 1991, INXS faced an undeserved and unwarranted backlash from their homeland. Episode two captures this and the ensuring dramas associated with trying to remain artistically and commercially relevant in a fast changing musical world with grunge, the Manchester scene and hip hop suddenly dominating the airwaves. This episode manages to capture a band still producing creative and daring material amidst the pressures of fame, family, relationships and Manager pressures and expectations. But with commercial appeal waning and the band members scattered throughout the globe, we get a “warts and all” account from the inside as to the difficulty many bands face when attempting to keep the machine rolling along. This episode respectfully deals with the obvious “elephant in the room” be it November 22nd, 1997 whilst criss-crossing time periods allowing the audience to appreciate the many decisions, compromises, struggles, sacrifices and commitment, INXS had to make during their career. As the show veers from re-creation into real spliced footage of the band traversing the world whist conquering countries, audiences, hearts and minds. The episode that we coined “The Ascent” where we see the band climb from humble beginnings to the career zenith of Wembley 1991. With impeccable casting and production values from Endemol Shine Australia, this iconic mini series launched on Australian TV on Sunday February 9th, 2014 and concluded the following week on February 16th to record ratings for the Channel 7 network. Filmed in Melbourne Australia with a cast of known but not overtly famous actors, Director Daina Reid elicits heartfelt and acute performances particularly from industry veteran Damon Herriman whose portrayal of INXS Manager Chris Murphy may be the shrewdest casting in many years. With a swathe of songs representing INXS' early career success in Australia, fans and the less initiated are taken into a heady and nostalgic period when music and gigs were the soundtrack and vehicle for youth culture and entertainment. Forever the creative soul, Michael Hutchence was born to be more than just a lead singer of an international rock band. From the early days, Michael embraced the theatrical possibilities of music video and was at the forefront in ensuring INXS songs captured a visual vibrancy and vitality. As such, in today's episode we dive deep into the critical performances that shaped and piqued Michael's acting urges commencing in 1982 when Michael joined forces with iconic Cold Chisel songwriter, Don Walker in contributing to the seminal 1982 Australian film Freedom with two tracks and one video, notably Speed Kills that showcases a 21 year old Michael. The next 4 years were committed to INXS' global ascent via albums Shabooh Shabaah, The Swing and Listen Like Thieves, plus the relentless touring attached to these triumvirate recordings. So, it took till 1986 for Michael to clear his schedule when the opportunity came up to star in Richard Lowenstein's Dogs in Space came up. A movie that embraced the punk leanings of shared living suburbia amidst musical graft, this iconic art house movie has endured and influenced generations of fans and filmmakers over 38 years, despite its middling box office performance at the time. Fast forward 4 years later post the juggernaut albums and tours that were Kick and X, Michael scratched a lifelong itch portraying famed British poet Percy Shelly, by joining Bridget Fonda, John Hurt, Jason Patric and Raul Julia in legendary Hollywood Director Roger Corman's last ever picture “Frankenstein Unbound”. A true passion piece and one that Michael embraced with unyielding commitment and joy. Finally, Michael portrayed a Record Executive mogul in the underwhelming indie feature “Limp” that despite its problems, aroused the attention of both Michael Douglas' and Quentin Tarantino's production companies with speculation of future projects in the offing. Unfortunately, Michael's untimely passing thwarted what may have led a promising acting career into a burgeoning one. What is known, Michael possessed a charisma, a stare and a glare amidst an inner drive and creativity to succeed and express. One can only imagine what more he could have achieved in this space. After deep diving on INXS' 2010 Original Sin Album last week, we take a detailed look at the album's legacy, the influence of Chris Murphy on the band during this period and some of the exciting tour/setlists performances that accompanied this album release. Having seen the band perform at Day on the Green at Rockford Estates Melbourne, Victoria in February 2011, the setlist provides an interesting backdrop to the sounds and styles of the album in a real time “live setting” with support bands including Train, Baby Animals and The Models. The influence of Chris Murphy rejoining the band again in a creative and supporting role cannot be underestimated. He took the pressure and burden off the remaining 5 members of INXS to prove their worth and bona fides. Having completed nearly 200 gigs with JD Fortune via the Switch Album Tour over 2006-2007, INXS took a much needed break in 2008 to recharge the batteries and contemplate further new chapters in their career post Michael Hutchence. Amidst, a temporary falling out with JD, the band reunited with long term Manager Chris Murphy after a 14 year hiatus from band duties. With a renewed focus to move the band to a brand, the bank found inner inspiration when jamming in the studio during 2009 deconstructing old songs with new arrangements. As such, the idea to re-record some well known and unique deep cut INXS tracks was born with the idea of inviting select singers, DJ's and world music artists to lend a hand. A unique initiative rarely taken by a band and one normally reserved for tribute acts. With Jon Farriss and James Ash (Rogue Traders Founder) spearheading the production duties, the band put together an ambitious, creative and artistically successful album that avoided being a simple rehash or rebooting of existing soundscapes. With guest contributors including Ben Harper, Rob Thomas, Kav Temperley (Eskimo Joe), Pat Monahan (Train) and Nikka Costa, the album manages to incorporate modern production, excellent musicianship and soaring vocal performances imbuing a sense of celebration and admiration for INXS' songs. Occasionally a song comes along that sits sedately surrounded by more spectacular songs but somehow over the journey of time reveals itself sonically, lyrically and emotionally within our hearts and minds. That's the story of INXS' masterpiece “The Stairs” from 1990's X album. After the one, two punch of Suicide Blonde and Disappear, both which climbed into the Billboard Top 10 Charts, The Stairs subtly and gradually provides a moment of introspective reflection in urban living amongst the masses and social alienation. With a contemplative introduction devoid of lyrics and full band interaction until the 80th second, INXS (according to Michael Hutchence) commit to a songwriting process and pathway that was to this point, their most ambitious recording. Absent was the traditional intro, verse, chorus, verse outro song structure with a greater emphasis on lyrical resonance and escalation. With a passioned vocal by Michael and a film clip that supports the lyrical themes of isolation and lack of community connection, INXS create a soundscape, lyric and message that some 34 years later has current day meaning in this online heavy but community lacking world. Having done deep dive episodes on more prominent singles such as What you Need, Never tear us Apart, Don't Change, Burn for You and The One Thing, we are proud to share a unique deep cut that has only blossomed and grown in the hearts, minds and souls of true INXS fans since 1990. Unlike many reality shows that were steeped in manipulation, occasional humiliation and cheesy contrived antics, Rock Star INXS in 2005 was a breath of fresh air insofar as allowing contestants to develop their talent, thrive in musical clinics and perform to a band judging panel that were educated, empathetic and 100% versed in the task at hand. With a catalogue of artists and songs from icons such as the Beatles, the Stones, the Police, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Alanis Morissette, The Who and Living Colour, the contestants were able to draw inspiration from these classic songs whilst showcasing their talent to the world. That being said, today we count down, share and relive the 10 most memorable moments that made Rock Star INXS, despite its critics, a worthy and exciting chapter in the post Michael era. After confidence boosting performances with Terence Trent D'Arby, the Tim Rice Extravaganza and closing out the 2000 Olympic Games, INXS sought an old mate to take the frontman duties in ex Noiseworks lead singer, Jon Stevens. Having carved a 20 plus year career as a soloist, frontman and pivotal member of the 1992/93 Jesus Christ Superstar revival stage show throughout Australia, Jon's credentials were bonafide and deserving. With domestic tours throughout Australia, subsequent ones to the USA, Latin America and Europe, it looked like INXS had overcome the inner uncertainty that plagued their previous 4 years. Armed with a plan to assert themselves across the globe in both a “live concert” and recording sense, optimism was high. Despite strong reviews of Jon's contribution to the band particularly in the performing sense, Jon would get disheartened with the lack of band creativity in the studio. With the sole single “I Get Up” released in 2003 to coincide with the Rugby Union World Cup the only fresh material, Jon would decide to leave INXS to pursue his own musical interests. That aside, Jon's contribution to the healing, morale and confidence for INXS to continue as a going concern entity cannot be underestimated and should be appreciated. We also go back to the year 1998 with a little pleasure and pain segment highlighting the sheer disparity of great and not so great songs that permeated the airwaves. So determining the top 25 that will still resonate in 100 years was a massive undertaking with many songs landing at '26!' Impact and importance are different criteria to favourite or best song. It's about which 25 songs, more than others, resonate with the public consciousness, whether it's the charts, fan enjoyment, legacy, musicianship or simply propelled the band forward in their progression from Aussie touring band to international superstardom. In episode 131, we embarked on a deep dive into INXS compilation albums (1982's INXSIVE and 1994 Greatest Hits) with attention and detail.  In the 2001-2002 period, INXS Management undertook the release of two distinct compilation albums for two different regions. “Shine like it Does” under their USA label Rhino, a 42 song extravaganza covering 1979-1997 released primarily in the USA. Secondly, “The Years:1979-1997” for their Australian market, a 41 song deep dive catalogue representation covering their Australasian and global career. With the band in a holding pattern, both releases served to remind old fans and new ones, the deep musical contribution INXS made to the sonic soundscapes since the inception. Both these releases overcame the shortfalls of 1994's Greatest Hits releases in the USA, UK and Australia respectively and provided true fans with a thorough representation of their singles, appropriate album deep cuts and liner notes within to die for! Often, complication albums can be a cynical record company cash grab exploiting each albums continued sale prospects. Pleasingly, this isn't one of these exercises as both discs cover nearly 95% of the band's recording successes. So for collectors without these double discs, for those unaware of their existence and to those who share a fondness and musical memory of these immense releases, do yourself a favour and listen in as we dive deep on all the interesting anecdotes and facts about these two mighty releases. INXS: Access all Areas is back with a vengeance this week with a truly original episode in two parts.  Frank Benbini of the Fun Lovin Criminals joins Bee and I to discuss the profound musical influence INXS had on him and his band mates as musicians. As a hybrid musical act out of New York City, the F.L.C adopted a blended style of music prowess combining rock, blues, hip hop, dance and soul. Uncompromising, unapologetic and unmissable “live”, Frank deep dives and revels in the skill, songcraft and talent of Andrew, Tim and Jon Farriss in particular whilst sharing a chance encounter he had with Michael in 1993 England! Frank's versatility as a musician has led to regular gigs with UB40 as a touring musician and several respected side projects such as “Uncle Frank”. This allowed Frank to make a magical recording with Sinead O'Connor before she suddenly passed. That and a jam packed news section bringing us right up to date! So sit back, forget about the problems in your life and embrace this latest bumper double episode! Love and peace

INXS: Access all Areas listeners were given a unique treat last week that being Part One of Mark Pellington whose industry credits go far beyond the Beautiful Girl video. Left with a cliffhanger as Mark escalated his frustration upon hearing INXS were not in fact, in the Rock Hall of Fame, we share in Part two's deep dive what that phone call entailed! Additionally, Mark opens up about how a personal family tragedy informed his artistic expression particularly in the year new millennium as he was increasingly chased by emerging artists such as The Fray, Keane, Kings of Leon, The Flaming Lips and The Dave Matthews Band. We get to hear Mark's interesting foray into acting much at the behest of iconic filmmaker Cameron Crowe (eg. Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous). Plus continued admiration for the musicianship and excellence of INXS and how working with true superstars such as Michael Hutchence and Bono affected Mark as a Director. All that and a whole lot more as we for the rarest of times, welcome a secret third wheel to the hosting duties all the way from Ottawa Canada! Famed USA Video, Film, Doco and TV Director, Mark Pellington joins INXS: Access all Areas to dive deep on his fantastic video for 1993 INXS single “Beautiful Girl” amidst many other broader conversations. Having gotten his start via MTV in 1983, Mark was at the forefront of when the video clip explosion was at the epicenter of the watching audience zeitgeist. Working initially with artists such as Leonard Cohen, De La Soul and PM Dawn, it was his future work with Pearl Jam's “Jeremy” video that brought Mark's unbridled talents into the forefront of the music industry heavy hitters. As such, he went on a peerless run Directing for U2 (One), Public Enemy (Shut em Down), REM (Drive), Alice In Chains (Rooster) plus Springsteen, Keane, The Flaming Lips and obviously our beloved INXS. Interestingly, it was INXS that would bring him his sole Grammy nomination eventually losing out to Peter Gabriel's “Steam” video (Urghhhh). Mark generously opens up how personal grief informed much of creative ideas and we get to dive deep on his work with other artists, feature films and his love of the Australian music industry culminating a cliffhanger moment regarding INXS' lack of recognition by the Rock Hall of Fame Committee that shall leave you clamouring for an early release of Part Two. So sit back and enjoy the iconic words of Mark Pellington. https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com/

With the year 2000 upon us, the world was entering an exciting new century. Music, cinema, pop culture and the arts were evolving and INXS were starting to take bigger steps in a world without Michael Hutchence. With the dust settling on Michael's posthumous album release, INXS took the left field move of signing up to the Tim Rice Spectacular Concert Series through Australia. Joining recognized artists such as Iva Davies (Icehouse), David Essex (Rock On) and a bevy of renowned Australian artists re-interpreting Tim's amazing back catalogue of songs. With confidence slowly returning as an entity, the band continued to surprise teaming up with Jon Stevens (formerly Noiseworks) for two impromptu but sold out gigs in Melbourne and Sydney. With fans traveling as far as Chicago and the UK to attend these gigs, the level of passion and pride at seeing a full-set INXS gig again was palpable! Combined with some private corporate gigs, the band made their long awaited international return headlining the closing ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games with a rollicking updated version of What you Need that had the crowd on their feet. So with small steps, INXS were getting their mojo back in a steady and incremental way against the odds. Welcome to 2024 to all of our wonderful bronze, silver, gold and platinum patrons and loyal listeners. We kick off the new year (pardon the pun) with Part 2 our important deep dive into Michael Hutchence's posthumous solo release with a song-by-song review. Following part one, we see how Michael stretches his musical capabilities and range both lyrically and sonically to great effect. Haunting, open and often literal, Michael's lyrics have never been more specific and brutal. We discuss each track and rate them accordingly, with our unique criterion. Sonically lush, guitar-wise, often dirty and emotionally heartbreaking, I recommend listening to this album for the healing and the true insight into what Michael was truly feeling in his final years. This episode of the INXS AAA podcast is completed with additional news items and details about our competitions just launched. We nudge the 100-minute mark, so this action-packed episode may be your own two parter! After 2 years of mourning, copious amounts of gossip innuendo and grief, finally INXS and Michael Hutchence fans have something meaningful and strangely healing to celebrate. This posthumous release of 13 unique and varied tracks were originally the brainchild of a phone call (make that two) from Michael in 1995 to legendary UK Gang of Four band leader Andy Gill. With the duo residing in the comfortable, calm and tranquil surrounds of the South of France, an environment of immense creativity and teamwork was established leading to a vast amount of songs and demos laid down. Knowing Co-Production support and proper studio surrounds were required, enter famed US alternative Producer and musician Danny Saber plus both the legendary Peter Gabriel Real World Studios amidst many others. The songs contained a lyrical honesty, earnestness and soundscape unheard of from Michael before, which given his 1995 surroundings, was to be expected. With no timelines or management interference, this self-financed labour of love had no release date time pressures, hence was parked when Michael returned to INXS commitments in 1996 and 1997. But with Michael's unfortunate passing in November 1997, the integrity of these recordings were salvaged by an “angel from Los Angeles” in Danny Saber to whom we shall all be eternally grateful. So sit back and enjoy what a monumental task it was to simply get this album to the release phase plus the circumstances and facts that lead to one of Michael's greatest recording efforts.
