If you're looking for a podcast episode that moves beyond surface-level talk and gets into the heart of why environmental justice matters, this episode of The Unfolding: Presented by The Loveland Foundation Podcast is worth your time.Host Rachel Keener sits down with Leah Thomas — known to many as Green Girl — an environmental activist and the voice behind the term intersectional environmentalist. Leah opens up about her path from growing up in Missouri to becoming a leading voice in the sustainability space, tracing how something as personal as her natural hair journey first got her thinking about what sustainability really means. But this isn't just about recycling or climate stats. Leah draws powerful connections between environmental issues and social and racial justice, explaining why true sustainability has to include communities that have long been left out of the conversation — especially Black communities. She shares how she builds spaces of care and creativity, like her Crafting Club, where people can come together, learn to make everyday items, and support one another. This episode doesn't fall into the trap of focusing only on crisis and catastrophe. Instead, Leah talks about the joy and healing that can come from reconnecting with the earth, caring for our mental health, and building community-based solutions. It's a conversation that offers hope without ignoring hard truths — and a reminder that the future can look different if we all understand and honor our connection to the planet. If you want to feel inspired and grounded at the same time, give this episode a listen.More about Leah Thomas @GreenGirlLeah:Leah is a celebrated environmentalist based in Los Angeles, CA. Coining the term ‘eco-communicator' to describe her style of environmental activism. Leah uses her passion for writing and creativity to explore and advocate for the critical yet often overlooked relationship between social justice and environmentalism. Her work includes consulting with brands like Apple and TAZO, projects with Meta, KEEN, TEVA, Indie Best Selling Book The Intersectional Environmentalist, and working on the Communications team at Patagonia HQ. New miniseries time! This time, we're taking a slightly different approach, focusing on a set of linked performers instead of a set of linked songs. Specifically, we're looking at some of the women who've played the original Green Girl, Elphaba from Wicked. First up is Stephanie J. Block who arguably was the original Elphaba, just not on Broadway. We look at her career and why it hasn't been quite what it might have been while we talk about "The Writing on the Wall," the finale to The Mystery of Edwin Drood by Rupert Holmes. It's a lot, so buckle in. All clips are from The Mystery of Edwin Drood (2012 New Broadway Cast Recording) featuring Stephanie J. Block and are protected by the Fair Use guidelines of Section 107 of the Copyright Act for criticism and commentary. All rights reserved to the copyright owners. Watch the performance on YouTube! She recently released her new book ‘The Intersectional Environmentalist: How to Dismantle Systems of Oppression to Protect People + Planet'. Merci To Our Sponsor For This Episode! Grass Roots Co-op Off the back of our collaboration with Zach Bush and Farmer's Footprint, we have been speaking a lot about regenerative agriculture and healthy, nourishing food systems. Grass Roots co-op fits right into this theme with their incredibly thoughtful approach to farming. Grass Roots is a co-op of farmers in rural America practicing regenerative farming that's better for the animals, the soil, the environment, and everyone's health. One of the ranchers in the Grass Roots co-op describes her greatest title and role as “land-steward.” She's talking about her work to help heal the ecosystem on the ranch; to foster healthy grasslands and soil that's alive with roots and microbes continually drawing carbon out of the atmosphere. Like all Grass Roots partners, she manages the ranch based on principles of regenerative farming. They have also joined Land to Market, an esteemed organization that verifies raw material production for its positive ecological impacts that is bridging the gap between regeneratively farmed land and consumers. Human nature is unchanging and will probably not change fundamentally for countless ages in the future. We look back now to the days before the automobile and before electricity and the hundred and one other mechanical conveniences that simplify life in so many ways. Just so people of the future will in all likelihood look back on pre-television and pre-flying days and wish themselves back in the exciting days of primitive life. Our well-known author gives us here a thought-provoking bit of literature of scientific interest. The Cosmic Express by Jack Williamson, that's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode. Support the show - https://www.buymeacoffee.com/scottsV Jack Williamson was born in 1908 in the Arizona territory when covered wagons were the primary form of transportation and Apaches still raided the settlers. His father was a cattle man, but for young Jack, the ranch was anything but glamorous. "My days were filled with monotonous rounds of what seemed an endless, heart-breaking war with drought and frost and dust-storms, poison-weeds and hail, for the sake of survival." Young John, he was born John Stewart Williamson but went by Jack, saw an ad for a free issue of Amazing Stories Magazine and soon his goal was to be a science fiction writer. He started writing and his first story, The Metal Man, appeared in the December 1928 issue of Amazing Stories. Jack was only 20. Two years later, the year was 1930, the first football World Cup took place, Mickey Mouse made his first appearance in comic form, Pluto was officially discovered and named as a planet and although the decade had just begun, author Jack Williamson was already being talked about as one of the most popular science fiction writers on the planet. The short novel The Green Girl is one of the reasons why he was so popular. In November 1930 today's story was published in Amazing Stories magazine. They must've numbered pages differently back in the day because our story begins on page 752 and there aren't 752 pages in that magazine. Well anyway, go to page 752 and you will find,The Cosmic Express by Jack Williamson… Tomorrow on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Venus wasn't the virgin planet Mankind had always assumed. Last Sunday, Green Girl was invited to Laguna Hills to conduct an impromptu interview with legendary shoe designer, Steven Smith, also known as the “Godfather of Dad Shoes” (although you'll learn he's not that crazy about that title). Steven was in the area picking up a new car body and swung by The Hills Hotel to discuss all things YEEZY and design. While Ye has been seen running around Europe barefoot, Green Girl and Steven both showed up to the hotel wearing Wave Runners, one of Steven's popular YEEZY designs. They sat down together in an empty boardroom, which likely gave Steven flashbacks to his bleak corporate days at Nike, having to appease several bosses before any sketch was approved. Steven described Ye's leadership style as “exhilarating,” and explained why he prefers the collaborative, free-flowing creation process at YEEZY to the formulaic systems he was forced to follow while working in corporate America.Since joining the YEEZY team in 2016, Steven has worked closely with Ye on some of YEEZY's most iconic designs and credits Ye for pushing him beyond his own artistic limitations. A dangerous freethinker himself, Steven has ridden every wave with Ye the last couple years, no matter how rocky the waters have gotten. Together, they have disrupted modern sneaker culture by redefining the way shoes are engineered and delivered to the public. Two of Steven's friends, Will Holmes, “The Mayor of OC” and Jen Lebrity of the clothing brand “Boho Rocker Collection,” join them on the podcast to talk about Ye, fashion and their new reality show currently in production, “The New OC.” Green Girl's brother also makes an appearance, donning an ironic Punisher T-shirt, and asks Steven advice on how to crawl out of a dark hole after hitting rock bottom.During the interview, Steven points out an awkward chandelier propelled from the ceiling. In that moment, it becomes clear he can draw inspiration from just about anything in the modern world, finding joy in even a sparkly mismatched hotel decoration. This interview is hilarious, thought-provoking and insightful and gave Green Girl hope for the future of YEEZY.Follow our guests:Steven Smith: @stevensmithWill: @mayorofocJen: @bohorockercollection Andy: @andyhagen_Follow our host: KP: @kanyespostsSupport the Channel: linktr.ee/kanyesposts

Justin suggests P.J. Soles as a better choice for this week's key guest role. Jodie Foster enters the discussion, as does James Garner. Overboard might be a worse film than Soldier, but the listener will have to decide. Memories of Supertrain's Weird Baby Man come into play and more Book of Boba Fett talk occurs.

Blackout Orchestra mastermind Ben VanBuskirk was going through a transitional period after years of ups and downs. At the end of a troubled relationship, he found himself two musical projects (the critic-approved death-obsessed shoegaze-pop band The Dearly Bereft, and feminist grunge provocateurs Green Girl), and at the end of his rope. Depression, anxiety, and alcoholism had him metaphorically, and on one night, literally, staring down the tracks at the lights of an oncoming train. He wasn't sure he wanted to get out of the way, but he did, and with the help of some close friends, he started to manage these issues that once seemed unsolvable. He got sober, he got counseling, and he started writing. With the time and money no longer spent inching closer and closer to the floor of local dive bars and rock venues, he started writing songs, recording them on the only tools available to the self-professed Luddite — a guitar, a cheap Yamaha keyboard, and his BlackBerry cell phone. Instead of learning to bake bread or crochet, he spent his quarantine learning music production and putting together an album documenting the fall and rise of the last months and years. As I started to get my feet wet to learn about Internal Family Systems, the first part of me has presented herself. I named her Gooddamn Green Girl. It's 6:11 am on Saturday, March 6, 2021. I set my alarm for 5:00 am this morning, so I could get up early and do some housework, brew some coffee and write an article about Goddamn Green Girl. I'm already in tears, thinking about her. I've learned on my healing journey; tears aren't something to run from; they are therapeutic. As soon as the thoughts about Goddamn Green Girl come to my mind, an enormous amount of pain follows her. Anger and rage are at the forefront of my perception. Goddamn Green Girl isn't sharing her life for sympathy, or for anyone to feel sorry for her. She's sharing because it's evident that she's never been heard or listened too so having the space to share her thoughts is a big deal to her, especially living a life never having a voice. A 7 minute walk to birch trees at the edges of Elfland, where fairies dwell, stories are felt, and time is difficult to tell. This is taken from the book, The Runes of Elfland, a collection of the Elder Futhark runes and the stories they embody. Nature is not just something to study. Through stories and lore, emotions and imagination, we nurture the rich connections that become legacy. Written by Ari Berk and illustrated by Brian Froud, this is not a conventional take on the runes, but an interpretation from the perspective of Elfland, Elfheim, or the Otherworld of fairy lores. This is 2 pages out of the 111-page book.

In this weeks episode, I had the honor to speak with Caroline Bowman. 5 years after seeing Bowman play Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway, I got the opportunity to interview her for my podcast. Bowman made her Broadway debut as the understudy for Elphaba in 2011, and left for a short period of time to be part of the original cast of Kinky Boots. Shortly after her run in Kinky Boots, Caroline came back and played the "Green Girl" full time. In addition to being part of the original cast of Kinky Boots, Bowman got to play the principal role she understudied for originally in the closing cast as well. Now, Caroline and her husband, Austin Colby (before Corona) are on the Frozen North American Tour where she gets to "Let it Go." every night as Elsa, while Austin plays Prince Hans of the Southern Isles. Bowman is a true force of wonderful in the broadway community, and I encourage all of my listeners to check out her work whether it is online, on broadway, or when The Frozen North American Tour comes to a city near you, when the show picks up again. Thank you so much Caroline for talking with me on my podcast! I can't wait to see you next year when you come in town on tour. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jayme-starr/support

Today we’re sitting down with Leah Thomas, wellness and sustainability advocate, contributing writer at The Good Trade, and PR + public engagement assistance Patagonia. What do we think of when we hear the word “green”. Maybe it’s just that, a color…or perhaps it’s the organic food aisle, possibly foregoing the car and opting for the bike, and that come to think of it, our wardrobes might be doing more harm than good to both ourselves and the planet. Basically a whole bunch of shoulds. Shoulding all over ourselves (creds to last hearing this on That's So Retrograde Podcast). But what we don’t often relate to these subject matters is the education and accessibility surrounding them. There’s just too much noise, too much to be taken care of, to be advocated for, to be judged for, too much lost. Too many wrongdoings that need to be set right. But maybe it’s not the lack of care that’s the problem, but the allowance to care, starting with ourselves. That’s where Leah comes in. She’ll give you a rundown from the greens on your plate to the ones on your back, but most importantly, the cultivation of self. Setting boundaries, taking a face mask or two along the way and learning to walk before you run. Taking cue from this angel in this week’s Ep 28 Green Girl Leah with Leah Thomas. Green Girl Farms is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization in San Pedro. Our Mission: We are leading the effort to build an environmentally sound and socially just food system in our community. We’re a volunteer-powered organization with an annual operating budget of less than $20,000. We create opportunities for the community to engage with growing food and the outdoors. We are building a local food system in our community. San Pedro is comprised of many different ethnic groups that all have a tradition of growing food and community together. And that has been lost over the years. We are bringing that tradition back. We grow food in a sustainable manner In empty lots and unused spaces. We make the food available in the communities in which it’s grown through produce stands and donations. We educate the public in ways to grow food in an environmentally friendly manner. We do that through workshops, classes, and special events. In 2015 I founded Green Girl Farms in order to continue to create positive social change through edible gardening, on a larger scale..... (https://mikesgreengarden.files.wordpress.com/2015/09/frugalgreengirl1.jpg) Frugal Green Girl (https://www.youtube.com/user/frugalgreengirl/featured) ! With over 7,900 subscribers & 940,366 views she’s a true internet sensation! I asked her in the pre-interview if she was a science major because she really goes into detail as to the whys and specifics not just how you do things and the reasons behind it with very thorough explanations! Tell us a little about yourself. So I’m a wife and a mom, I have a couple of kids that I homeschool. I also have a mostly work from home job, as a rental manager. 14 years ago I spent a year at a local community college studying plant and greenhouse sciences, which is also known as horticulture which gave me a good foundation. house on a tenth of an acre started a little urban homestead few years ago, I decided to start a youtube blog and it’s also been tons of fun. I was also telling another guest this morning, that a lot of my listeners have been reaching out to me from urban gardeners so I think they will like this as well. (https://mikesgreengarden.files.wordpress.com/2015/09/new-born-baby-goats.jpg) Tell me about your first gardening experience? I did grow up in Colorado. My very first gardening experience was a long time ago. I was in an elementary school. My mom cut open a cantaloupe and my brother and I were really curious if the seeds would grow? My brother and I got an old wooden ice cream bucket, strained out some rocks from the soil we planted the seeds in there and they actually grew! It was exciting to have something that would actually grow! But we were renters and so I had a neighbor thru some spark plugs, and it killed it and it actually didn’t work out so bad because it really gave me a dream to be a home owner someday! I mean even at that young age. And from the beginning I’ve always really enjoyed repurposing things, and saving some things and just aspiring to be a sustainable gardener! That gave me a dream and a goal and the motivation and get what I really wanted out of life! I’m so happy to be a homeowner now! And Have a space of our own! And a space to grow a garden! Being a home owner is just really nice isn’t it to have a place that’s your own? It is! What does organic gardening/earth friendly mean to you? Beyond just the regular regulations, that the stuff that you grow has to be non-GMO, and pesticide and herbicide and chemical fertizlier free. For me it’s far beyond that, it’s really about a healthy lifestyle, not just for me and my family. But just to good for the environment and helping to take care of our planet, it’s such a beautiful place to live and I feel a social responsibility I realize that the choices we make affect everybody! that’s water everybody I want to be more part of the solution then part of the problem. To promote a healthy lifestyle and organically garden? I was asking some people what category my podcast should be in on iTunes because its in games and hobbies and that just doesn’t seem right to me. So they asked me and I said it was more of a lifestyle. And Rodale’s just changed their magazine from Organic Gardening to Organic Life (http://www.rodalesorganiclife.com) . Also when I just interviewed AERO (http://www.aeromt.org) was an opportunity for people to live their values… and I think you are a great example of that.I love the way you are teaching people and sharing that on YouTube! Excellent! Who or what inspired you to start using organic techniques? That’s what first started it off Back in ’08 I lost my grandma, my mom’s mom to breast cancer. Then in ’09 I lost my other grandmother, they linked it back to her picking it up in the hospital. That’s when it hit home, I can’t just take my health for granted, if we’re not diligent about our health and taking it into our... Support this podcast

The Green Girl. One of the most famous aliens in Star Trek is the Orion slave girl, and the most classic “green” moment comes from “The Cage,” compliments of Susan Oliver. The prolific star is best known to Star Trek fans for this role, yet her appearance in Star Trek is but a speck on the landscape of her career as an actress and director. In this episode of The Ready Room we take a break from our usual format as we're joined by Larry Nemecek and writer/director George Pappy to talk about his new documentary The Green Girl, which chronicles the life of Susan Oliver, her film and television work, attempts to break the glass ceiling for female directors, and more. In our news segment we get a first-hand recap of the Geek Nation Tours trek to Las Vegas, discuss how recent awards and campaigns for Star Trek Continues and Star Trek: Axanar highlight the growing fan desire for new Trek, and assess the prospects for the remastering of Deep Space Nine and Voyager in light of some recent panels and interviews with those who might spearheads the projects. Crystal Allen and D'Nesh. Enterprise brought back Orion slave girls, which we had not seen since the Original Series in "Whom Gods Destroy." And as Enterprise did with so many things from TOS, this appearance put a very interesting twist on a familiar theme. In the fourth-season episode "Bound" we're introduced to three Orion slave girls, the sisters Navaar, D'Nesh, and Maras. Through their interactions with Archer, the NX-01 crew, and their supposed owner Harrad-Sar, we learn more than we had ever known about these exotic women and their role in Orion society. In this episode of Warp Five we're joined by one of these three sisters—or at least the actress who portrayed her—Crystal Allen, who, as D'Nesh, bent a member of the Enterprise's crew to her will. We talk to Crystal about getting into acting, her pre-acting career as a dancer and model, how she landed the role of D'Nesh and what it was like working on the set, and even her love of cooking.

Kate Zambreno is the guest. She is the author of two novels, O Fallen Angel and Green Girl, and her latest book is a critical memoir called Heroines, now available from Semiotext(e). The Paris Review raves "It should come as no surprise that her provocative new work, Heroines, published by Semiotext(e)'s Active Agents imprint... challenges easy categorization, this time by poetically swerving in and out of memoir, diary, fiction, literary history, criticism, and theory. With equal parts unabashed pathos and exceptional intelligence, Heroines foregrounds female subjectivity to produce an impressive and original work that examines the suppression of various female modernists in relation to Zambreno's own complicated position as a writer and a wife." And Bitch magazine calls it "A brave, enlightening, and brutally honest historical inquiry that will leave readers with an urgent desire to tell their own stories." Also in this episode: A conversation with Ron Currie, Jr., whose new novel, Flimsy Little Plastic Miracles (Viking | February 2013) is the January selection of the TNB Book Club.
