Rebecca Jackson-Artis joins the podcast to teach McNeil and Andrew a thing or two about following their calling!  And that baseball games are boring. Especially when they are announced on the radio.  "And.....  A swing and miss..."  Rebecca also promotes her comedy sketch show "What If I'm The Becky?" that she created with her partner Rebecca Fox! You can get tickets here: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4523808 Rebecca Jackson-Artis (the Black one) was born on the south side of Chicago and reared in the north suburb of Skokie. A lover of performance, comedy and music since childhood, she holds a BA in Theatre Arts-Performance from Hampton University. In Chicago, she was an ensemble member of Barrel of Monkeys Theatre Company and worked as a teaching artist in Chicago Public Schools. She graduated from The Second City Conservatory and became an understudy for Chicago’s Second City mainstage.  The birth of Rebecca’s first child in 2008 inspired an interest in maternal and child health. She became a Certified Lactation Specialist and worked with the Chicago Department of Public Health and WIC, promoting breastfeeding in African American communities throughout Chicago. She started a blog, a podcast, and co-founded a company that helped parents and health agencies serving low-resource neighborhoods. In 2012, Rebecca, her husband Craston Artis II, and other parents started the African-centered school Watoto Wetu Academy on the south side of Chicago. Rebecca moved with her family to Raleigh, North Carolina in 2014 and soon realized she had to return to acting, writing, and comedy. In 2018 she graduated from the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism & Mass Communications as a Master of Fine Arts in Narrative Media Writing. In 2018, Rebecca also wrote, produced, and starred in a short comedic film, In the Midst of Morons, directed by Dre Robinson. After ITMOM, Dre and Rebecca began a web series called Totally Becky, which screened in eight film festivals, garnering nominations for two awards, and winning Best Web Series at the 2018 Middle Coast Film Festival. Rebecca lives in Raleigh with her husband, two sons (sometimes her bonus daughter too), and her mom from whom she learned the art of comedic timing.

I got a chance to sit down with Eliaz Rodriguez at The Adirondack Film Festival and it was an absolute blast. We got a chance to talk about his life, travels, film making, and so much more in this very special episode. Below is a bunch of stuff I copied and pasted off IMDB:Eliaz Rodriguez is an international-award-winning autodidact writer, director, and editor from Chicago. In 2008 he co-created the comedy group Wood Sugars and over the next five years produced/directed hundreds of films, web series, podcasts, and live comedy shows. In October of 2013 he made his first solo short film, an adaptation of a true story entitled Beverly, which went on to win Best In Show of the Cinema Minima Residency and Best of Fest of the Indie Incubator Film Fest.In 2016 he launched his production company "Elamina Films". The first release from Elamina is his latest short "Think Twice", which was his first film with a full 15-person crew. "Think Twice" has gone on to be selected to 50 film festivals and has won multiple "Best Director" and "Best Short Film" awards at festivals including the prestigious Middle Coast Film Festival and the "Best International Comedy Film" award from the Cardiff Mini Film Festival.

Welcome back to the show! Today, we're going to the Davis Theater (4614 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago) for the Middle Coast Film Festival! We got a look behind the scenes and got to talk to John Schorg, the chairman of the festival. John discussed the importance of short films, and why they have so much to offer us. We also sat down with Melissa Fitzsimmons, the program director for the Middle Coast Film Festival, to get an idea of the amount of footwork involved in this massive undertaking, including screening HUNDREDS of film submissions. We also talked to a handful of filmmakers from all over the country (also Canada) here this weekend to showcase their films. 1. Karson Pilote- writer and director of The Heart of the Blackhawks. This documentary chronicles his grandfather's life and career playing for the Chicago Blackhawks. 2. Writer Ben Hammond, director Shawn McDaniel, and cinematographer Mark Stabeline sit down to talk about My Death Co, a darkly funny web series about confronting death, life, love, and everything in between. They are premiering their 2nd episode tonight, but their first is currently available to stream at www.mydeathco.com 3. Averland DeCourse, Brandon Coleman, and cinematographer Sayyid talked to me about their film, Identity: Absolutely Present. We discussed their many influences from Spike Lee and Ryan Coogler to camera techniques made famous by Alfred Hitchcock. 4. Jaffe Zin sat down with me to talk about his latest feature film, Children. He described Children as a sort of existential Christian horror film, so obviously, I wanted to know more. He talks about the big differences between Children and his last feature film, Happy Valley. You can check out middlecoastfest.com for the whole lineup, or just head down there NOW and check out some seriously incredible films. This was recorded live in a noisy room, so be warned. But please suffer through the inferior quality, because I had a great time with these folks, and they absolutely have something to say. And thanks for supporting Movie Show Theater!

Scenery may not be the key factor when it comes to determining a good location for making movies. That decision might have more to do with community.
