In this episode, we wrap up our April selections with the 1996 comedy from director Mike Nichols, "The Birdcage", starring Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman, Diane Wiest and Hank Azaria! Listen now!
We do an eclectic celebration of the dance — and we do NOT keep it all inside! There's plenty of love in the studio for THE BIRDCAGE, both one of the funniest comedies of the '90s and one of the most successful. We expected the laughs; we didn't expect so many feelings! (We don't really have any recommendations this week; we talk about movies, but no one was particularly crazy about any of them. All of our love is for The Birdcage.)
Vinny and Grayson return with a chaotic medley of home hacks, parenting takes, movie critiques, and cosmic questions. They cover everything from dehumidifier strategies and the haunting of Leo the Lion to whether Katy Perry qualifies as an astronaut (spoiler: she doesn't). Grayson dives into the beauty of The Birdcage and space philosophy, while Vinny fixates on charcoal bags, lemonade stands, and his daughter's toy that might be spreading digestive misinformation. Also discussed: broken washing machines, billionaire space tourism, cursed baked goods, and the MCU's multiverse melting into nonsense. This episode includes: – DIY air quality tips and fan automation via smart plug – Grapes + milk = gastrointestinal terrorism – Home appliance rants: commercial > consumer – Parenting lessons from body cam footage – Marvel incursions and the Illuminati's comic book roots – Katy Perry's space tourism PR disaster – Street food trust issues and nostalgic apple slicers – The strange brilliance of The Birdcage and Gene Hackman's filmography Find out more at https://slightly-biased.pinecast.co This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

Movie of the Year: 1996The Birdcage (feat. Andrea Thompson from A Reel Of One's Own!)The Movie of the Year podcast takes a deep dive into The Birdcage (1996), a groundbreaking comedy that blends family dynamics, farce, and fearless LGBTQ+ representation. In this episode, the hosts explore how The Birdcage helped shift mainstream perceptions of queerness in the '90s, all while delivering standout performances from Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, and showcasing the directorial mastery of Mike Nichols. Whether you're watching the film for the first time or revisiting it, this episode offers a thoughtful and engaging look at why The Birdcage continues to matter.Listen to the episode now:[Podcast Player Embed Here]Gender, Sexuality, and Queer Representation in The BirdcageThe podcast opens with an in-depth discussion of how The Birdcage portrays gender and sexuality with both humor and dignity. At a time when LGBTQ+ characters were often relegated to the margins of pop culture, The Birdcage celebrated queer life, drag culture, and same-sex relationships. The hosts explore the film's role in pushing boundaries and normalizing visibility, particularly in a cultural moment still defined by Don't Ask, Don't Tell and lingering AIDS-era stigma.Robin Williams in One of His Most Subtle, Heartfelt RolesKnown for his exuberant performances, Robin Williams delivers one of his most emotionally restrained roles as Armand Goldman. The podcast explores how Williams balances warmth, wit, and gravitas, crafting a character who is both deeply human and quietly revolutionary. The hosts compare this performance to Williams' other work from the '90s and consider how his presence lends the film emotional credibility and depth.Mike Nichols' Directing BrillianceDirector Mike Nichols adapts the French farce La Cage aux Folles into a uniquely American satire, using timing, character dynamics, and visual composition to heighten both comedy and emotional impact. The hosts break down Nichols' directing choices, from rapid-fire dialogue to carefully choreographed scenes, showing how his vision shapes the film's tone and political commentary. Is The Birdcage Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts? One of the most spirited conversations in the episode centers on whether The Birdcage works because of its individual elements—such as the writing, performances, and production design—or because those elements merge into something greater. The hosts highlight iconic scenes like the chaotic dinner party and the nightclub sequences to show how the film achieves synergy between script, performance, and direction.Identity and the Meaning of LifeBeyond its sharp humor, The Birdcage asks deep questions about identity, authenticity, and acceptance. The hosts analyze the tension between performance and reality, especially in the context of Armand and Val's relationship, and explore how characters navigate the pressures of conformity and family expectations. This section connects the film to broader philosophical ideas about the meaning of life, love, and self-expression.Special Guest: Andrea Thompson from A Reel Of Our OwnJoining the discussion is film critic Andrea Thompson, founder of A Reel Of Our Own, a platform dedicated to amplifying marginalized voices in film. Andrea brings a fresh critical perspective to the episode, exploring how The Birdcage portrays queer identity with compassion, nuance, and humor. She also discusses the film's lasting influence on LGBTQ+ media and its place in queer film history. How The Birdcage Holds Up in 2024The podcast team revisits The Birdcage...

Today, Ali and Asif discuss the career of the late Gene Hackman (2:04). They discuss his early life, getting into acting and his friendship with Dustin Hoffman and Robert Duvall. They also discuss Hackman's other interests including architecture and writing. Asif and Ali then discuss their favourite Gene Hackman roles including in the movies ‘Superman', ‘Hoosiers', ‘Crimson Tide', ‘Unforgiven', ‘The Royal Tenenbaums' and ‘The Birdcage'. He then discusses the two serious forms of the disease – hantavirus pulmonary syndrome and hantavirus renal syndrome. He then goes over the treatment and the prevention of the disease. Interview with Dan Noone, CEO of G2 Goldfields Inc.Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/g2-goldfields-tsxvgtwo-guyana-gold-explorer-preps-strategic-split-asset-sale-6550Recording date: 10th March 2025G2 Goldfields has announced a significant achievement with its latest mineral resource estimation showing over 3 million ounces of gold at its Oko-Aremu project in Guyana. This marks the company's third resource update, steadily growing from just over 1 million ounces in its first estimation to now exceeding 3 million ounces. The company completed 59,000 meters of drilling last year, primarily at the Ghanie deposit, successfully connecting previously separate zones into a continuous 2.5-kilometer mineralized shear zone. The project features two distinct mineralization styles: the high-grade OKO Main Zone, where shears 3, 4, and 5 contain approximately 960,000 ounces averaging 9 g/t gold, and the Ghanie deposit with both high-grade footwall zones (7 g/t) and disseminated hanging wall mineralization (1 g/t).CEO Dan Noone highlighted the project's robust nature regardless of cut-off grade parameters, stating, "The deposit isn't sensitive to cut-off grade... The ounces always seem to be there; it doesn't really matter what parameters we put in."The project demonstrates excellent metallurgical performance with gold recoveries averaging 98.5% at OKO Main Zone and 94.2% at Ghanie, with no problematic elements present in the mineralization. This clean metallurgical profile makes the deposit well-suited for gravity recovery methods, potentially reducing both capital and operating expenses.G2 Goldfields is currently operating two drill rigs targeting higher-grade zones at depth and along strike. Recent drilling has shown promising results, with visible gold observed in step-out holes. The company is also exploring additional targets including OKO North and an area called Birdcage. With approximately $37 million in cash, G2 is well-funded for continued exploration without requiring additional financing. AngloGold Ashanti holds nearly 15% ownership in the company, and multiple mining companies have reviewed their data room under active non-disclosure agreements, suggesting potential acquisition interest. The proximity to G Mining's neighboring project creates potential synergies that could be attractive to acquirers. Noone noted, "It's obvious to anybody that this is really one big 5-kilometer long deposit... not much different to the Kalgoorlie Super Pit which had three mines on it, or Red Lake, or Kirkland Lake. And so there's obvious synergies here."Looking ahead to 2025, Noone hopes to see gold prices remain strong above $3,000 per ounce and make additional discoveries along the main shear trend comparable to OKO Main Zone or Ghanie.View G2 Goldfields' company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/g2-goldfieldsSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Yesterday afternoon, the bodies of Gene Hackman, Betsy Arakawa, and their dog were found at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The County Sheriff's Office did not have reason to suspect foul play this early in the investigation, and there's no official confirmation on the cause of their deaths. Many have suggested it may have been carbon monoxide poisoning. The couple had been married since 1991.Betsy Arakawa, 63, was a retired classical pianist and co-owned Pandora's Box, a home furnishings store in Santa Fe which she launched with her friend Barbara Lenihan. She resolutely avoided the spotlight and cherished her privacy, never giving public interviews and preferring to live a quiet life with her husband.Gene Hackman, 95, was a Marine Corps veteran who had wanted to act since he was ten years old and pursued that dream several years after he left the service. At the Pasadena Playhouse, Mr. Hackman and his friend Dustin Hoffman were voted “The Least Likely to Succeed” and shortly thereafter moved to NYC to prove the doubters wrong and make their way into the industry. They befriended Robert Duvall, and the three struggling actors shared apartments for much of the ‘60s.All three became some of the best actors of their generation and among the greatest of all-time. Mr. Hackman won Oscars for Best Actor (The French Connection, 1971) and Best Supporting Actor (Unforgiven, 1993), along with additional nominations for Best Actor (Mississippi Burning, 1989) and Best Supporting Actor (Bonnie & Clyde, 1968; I Never Sang for My Father, 1971).He also won three Golden Globes (five additional nominations, plus the 2003 Cecil B. DeMille Award), two BAFTAs (five additional nominations), and a Screen Actors Guild Award along with the rest of the cast of The Birdcage (1997).That's all swell, but itemizing accolades doesn't come close to doing justice to the spell cast by Gene Hackman onscreen. The magic of Mr. Hackman is that he somehow played the same person and a completely different person, simultaneously, in every movie, and it always felt exactly right. If you saw his face in a movie when you were flipping channels, you stopped to watch. Because it's Gene Hackman. I mean, Hoosiers (1986). C'mon, now.Every big character Mr. Hackman has done is so individually compelling whilst simultaneously bearing hallmarks that can only be done by Gene Hackman and wouldn't be as good without them, and we completely bought it every time.It never felt like he broke himself down for characters. He seemed to just put on a costume and act his ass off. And it always worked. My favorite performance by Mr. Hackman is Captain Ramsey in Crimson Tide (1995), the commander of a nuclear submarine who is clearly emotionally unstable and paranoid.I've watched that movie so many times, and even when he's not onscreen, Mr. Hackman looms large in every frame, somehow stealing scenes he's not even in. The pettiness and resentment and narcissism of the character is so palpable that the thought still briefly crosses my mind during every rewatch: “Damn, he's gonna get ‘em all killed.”One of the more interesting “what ifs” in the history of film casting is how Mr. Hackman almost played Calvin Jarrett, the father in Ordinary People (1980), but withdrew due to a financial disagreement with the studio. The late, great Donald Sutherland was cast instead and gave a superb performance—which was infamously snubbed for a Best Actor nomination that year—but just for a second, try to imagine Mr. Hackman in that particular role. I want to see that movie, too.Mr. Hackman fully stepped away from acting in 2004 and confirmed his retirement in subsequent years, only making a guest appearance in an episode of “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives” in 2008 and lending his voice to two Marine Corps documentaries.Ms. Arakawa and Mr. Hackman remodeled a home in Santa Fe and built a quiet and peaceful life there over the past 35 years, away from all the glitz and glamour and gossip of Hollywood and the film industry, for which neither had much patience.Their idea of a good time was spending every Friday night watching stand-up comedy, Susie Izzard being one of their favorites. Their family and friends are in my thoughts today. What a year, y'all. What a year.Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 87 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by our Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson to discuss the next film in their Mike Nichols series, The Birdcage (1996). For the better part of two decades, Mike Nichols was chasing the idea of directing some version of the iconic play, La Cage aux Folles. Nichols called the play “one of the greatest comedy structures” of all time, and knew he to be involved with it somehow. So in the mid-1990s, he was able to convince the studios and producers to let him make an American remake of the play and have his longtime, iconic stage collaborator, Elaine May, to write the script; and thus The Birdcage was born. Centering around a gay Miami couple whose son is set to marry the daughter of a conservative U.S. senator, The Birdcage is a groundbreaking, iconic comedy that remains hilarious and timely to this day thanks to the incredible ensemble cast, May's sharp script, and Nichols steady direction bringing it all together. Ryan, Jay, and Erik discuss their thoughts on the film, what their favorite performance is in the movie, how Nichols was able to wrangle Robin Williams' persona in, the dozens of iconic lines, the entire third act of the film, and tangents, tangents, tangents. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h55m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Mike Nichols with a review of his next film, Primary Colors. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 86 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by Pop Culture Confidential host Christina Jeurling Birro to discuss the next film in their Mike Nichols series, Postcards from the Edge (1990). As we enter the 1990s, Mike Nichols is coming off one of the most successful films of his career, and with his follow-up to Working Girl, he brings to life the deeply honest, humorous, personal story of Carrie Fisher's autobiographical novel, Postcards from the Edge. Based on Fisher's novel inspired by real life events from her childhood, relationship with her mother Debbie Reynolds, her acting career post Star Wars, and her battle with substance abuse, Nichols is expertly able to bring every element of Fisher's life together with a brilliant performance by Meryl Streep, and the excellent work by Shirley MacLaine playing her version of Reynolds, and the tragic yet relatable bond the real mother-daughter had while going through the Hollywood machine. Ryan, Jay, and Christina break down their thoughts on the film, their connection to Fisher and Reynold's careers, how different a role like this is for both Streep and MacLaine, the perfect use of Gene Hackman, the film's depiction of substance abuse and if it goes deep enough on the matter, and the what might possibly be the funniest moment in the history of the show with the discovery of the plot of a Disney Channel original movie from 2004 and how it all ties to the career of Debbie Reynolds. And no, we aren't talking about Halloween Town. You will have to listen to find out, and trust us, it's worth it.
