With America In Major New Administration & the Political News View Headlines Changing Everyday, This Book is Particularly Intriguing Now!!In 1974 John Egerton published his seminal work, The Americanization of Dixie. Pulitzer Prize-winner Cynthia Tucker and award-winning author Frye Gaillard carry Egerton's thesis forward in The Southernization of America, a compelling series of linked essays considering the role of the South in shaping America's current political and cultural landscape. They dive deeper, examining the morphing of the Southern strategy of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan into the Republican Party of today, the racial backlash against President Obama, family separation on our southern border, the rise of the Christian right, the white supremacist riots in Charlottesville, the death of George Floyd, and the attack on our nation's capitol. They find hope in the South too, a legacy rooted in the civil rights years that might ultimately lead the nation on the path to redemption. Tucker and Gaillard bring a multiracial perspective and years of political reporting to bear on a critical moment in American history, a time of racial reckoning and democracy under siege.Frye Gaillard is an award-winning journalist with over 30 published works on Southern history and culture, including Watermelon Wine; Cradle of Freedom: Alabama and the Movement that Changed America; The Books That Mattered: A Reader's Memoir; Journey to the Wilderness: War, Memory, and a Southern Family's Civil War Letters; Go South to Freedom; A Hard Rain: America in the 1960s, Our Decade of Hope, Possibility, and Innocence Lost; and The Slave Who Went to Congress. Words don't begin to describe how amazing Timi Meade is! Aside from being so well accomplished in the Grady College of Journalism at UGA, she is the kind of friend we all deserve. She has a bubbly personality as well as an introspective mind, and we're lucky enough to hear from both sides of her in episode one. Timi reframes the concept of ‘sad girl songs,' and finds the glimmer of hope in every Phoebe Bridgers track. I think we can all learn a little something about the way Timi walks through life; especially the way she listens to music. (There are mentions of eating disorders and suicide in this episode. Listener discretion is advised.)

Following a successful reunification, Amanda and Megan transitioned to a DFCS partnership home and haven't looked back since. Fast forward almost 5 years and 40+ placements, Amanda and Megan have provided a loving home to kiddos of all ages, backgrounds, and needs – sometimes for just a few hours and sometimes for many years. They have been most dedicated to a sibling set of toddlers and a sibling set of teenagers that have been with them long-term and who will always fill their hearts – even when they no longer fill their home. The Five Hive aims to establish a peer support network for foster families and a swarm of support for the entire Region 5 Foster Care community. Long-term, Amanda and Megan hope to not only impact the lives of the children in their care but also find ways to strengthen the Foster Care community throughout the state of Georgia."Originally from Jupiter, Florida, Megan fled the gator state to be a double-dawg, earning both her Bachelors and Masters in Public Relations from Grady College at the University of Georgia. Greg Bluestein is a political reporter who covers the governors' office and state politics, and contributes to The Political Insider blog for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's. Before working for the AJC, he was an AP Reporter based in Atlanta for 7 years. At The University of Georgia, he was the Editor in Chief of The Red and Black. Greg Bluestein represents a little bit of The Road Not Traveled for both of your intrepid hosts, but more so for The Chairman. As we discuss in the episode, both Dave and Greg possess degrees in Journalism from The Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications at The University of Georgia. They also both have an emphasis via said degree in “Newspapers.” Chris and Dave met on the staff of The McIntosh Trail newspaper in high school. Greg and Chris both have degrees in Political Science. Ironies abound. Dave is a political consultant of some renown, Chris runs a successful on-site rental and logistics business, and Greg is a reporter – albeit one who hasn't picked up a pica stick, or had to read a story over the line in a phone booth to get it in for the evening edition in quite some time. So the next time someone gets on their high horse about “Liberal Arts Degrees” not preparing students for “Real World Jobs” you can point them our way. We are also all Sons of The South, though the term has undergone a change in meaning in recent years, graduates of The University of Georgia, passionate about the politics and the media of our changing region, and about the success and failure of our schools' football team. (TYLER SIMMONS WAS ONSIDES). Greg's a tremendous guest, a go to for reporters and others who want to grok Georgia's changing politics, and an all around mensch! In this episode, Dr. Wright interviews sports personality Ernie Johnson, Jr., who is the host of Turner Sports’ NBA coverage and TNT’s Emmy award-winning program, Inside the NBA. He is the studio host for Turner and CBS’s NCAA Division 1 Basketball Championship coverage, and does play-by-play reporting for TBS’s exclusive coverage of the MLB and the PGA Championship. Ernie has covered many major sporting events and earned various awards, holds degrees from Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and the University of Georgia, has been married to his wife Cheryl for nearly 38 years, and is the father of 6 children. Dr. Wright asks Ernie to explain how he came to be where he is now as a man of faith in the public sphere, and Ernie recounts his turning to Jesus in December of 1997 under the ministry of IWU graduate Kevin Myers, as well as the way this turning point actually helped him to be better at his job as a sportscaster. Ernie uses the analogy of a pie to describe the role of faith in his life; rather than being a piece of the pie, as some other element of his life, his faith is the crust that holds everything together and impacts all other parts of life. In his work, Ernie responds to the real-life events happening based on ‘who he is’, and has a platform to speak about his faith because it is part of ‘who he is’. Ernie discusses his role on Inside the NBA, and clarifies that his colleagues respect him as a person of faith because he’s true to himself and they see what really matters to him.One of the most important things in Ernie’s life is his family, and Dr. Wright asks about the challenges that have come along with Ernie’s unique family situation. Ernie and his wife adopted four children after having two biological children, and three of their adopted children have special needs. One of their children, Michael, has muscular dystrophy; he is susceptible to many different health issues, and has been on a ventilator for 9 years. There are challenging points in the parenting journey, but Ernie is proud of and thankful for each of his kids. He has found a great teammate in his wife, and has settled into a healthy rhythm with his wife of giving each other needed time away when they get tired. The conversation concludes with the topics of Cheryl’s work, ways Ernie’s experience has shaped his ways of relating to others, the value inherent in all people, Ernie’s awards, and advice for people wanting to enter the same field as Ernie.Links:Learn more about Ernie, Turner Sports, and Inside the NBA.Learn more about IWU grad Kevin Myers and his ministry.Learn about Indiana Wesleyan University and its president, Dr. David Wright.

Marc Gorlin is a serial entrepreneur, whose entrepreneur father started him hustling with the advice, right out of college, not to find a job, but to find a deal he could grow and develop. Marc did so, four times to date, with great success in each venture. Marc explains how Roadie, his latest and current venture, came to be, how he secured funding, and where he expects it to grow. Tune in for the moving startup story. Key Takeaways: [1:02] Marc Gorlin, Co-Founder of PGP Corporation, VerticalOne, Kabbage, Inc, and Founder of Roadie Inc. was encouraged by his father not to find a job, but to find a deal, and start something on his own that he can build. [1:32] Marc’s father spent his entire life starting biotech companies, working on everything from childhood diabetes to cancer, putting in the first dollar, organizing a team, and getting the company running. To Marc, that all seemed normal. [2:23] Marc wouldn’t trade his experience at the Grady College of Journalism in Georgia for anything. To get a startup to work, you have to make people care by telling stories. The ability of a journalist to take facts and create stories that people can get behind is invaluable. [3:06] Marc lives in Atlanta, with a condo in Florida. There was a construction problem in the condo shower, so Marc was going to replace it with tile. On his way down, he got a call that the tile shipment would be late. Sitting off the highway, he noted all the traffic, North and South, and wondered, why wouldn’t one of them deliver the tile for $20.00? [4:35] Marc realized that there’s an “unbelievable transportation heat map” that already exists in this country, if he could only tap into it. Over 250 million vehicles, with over 4 billion cubic feet of excess capacity, hit the road every day. Everybody has a tile story, leading to the creation of a community who use technology to help each other out. [5:41] All the way down to the beach, Marc started calculating capacity in the cars on the road. Marc thought about the standard hub and spoke model of delivery, which requires customer density and utilization to work. Then he thought about the on-demand model of Uber and Lyft. These vehicles go out of their way. [6:36] Those models are different from “on the way,” meaning someone that is in your vicinity is heading in the same direction that your stuff just happens to be going. That efficiency over time will reduce cost, with the added benefit of bringing people together. [6:55] Marc tells of meetings and relationships that have come to be through Roadie deliveries, besides the deliveries themselves. You can have something in one place, and just attach it to somebody who's already going somewhere else. [7:43] The model is the sharing economy. People helping each other out, with ratings and reviews, has its roots in AirBnB, and even eBay. You can see the history and ratings of the drivers. Small or large items, local or national, it all works. [8:37] The typical driver member is one of several personas: regular visitors to one location, local drivers around town, regional drivers, or long-haul drivers. Roadie data shows patterns, and sends texts to drivers based on needs. They make it as simple as possible for people to get paid for going where they already go, and helping someone. [9:47] In January 2015 Roadie started with $10 million in Series A funding. Marc explains how he finds and approaches investors. Understand what they’ve done in the past, use your past relationships, and find a way to make people care about and understand how what you’re doing could change something, and believe in you to do it. [10:26] The business idea is less important than the trust that you will gather the right people, find the best customers, and do the right things, hopping from lily pad to lily pad, to get to the goal. Qualified investors accept that and are willing to take those big bets. Look for people in the industry. UPS is an investor in Roadie; they see its usefulness. [12:11] Marc, a serial entrepreneur, believes this company will hold his attention. A couple of years in, they are trying to create a system that can involve everybody. It can create technology, it can move faster, it can be more sustainable, and get trucks off the road, using capacity that’s already there. It’s green, and it can bring people together. [12:43] Marc Borlin’s big idea from that overpass on I-65, Roadie, is now operating in all 50 states, with 40,000 drivers, so far. Mentioned in This Episode: Marc Gorlin Roadie Kabbage VerticalOne (Acquired by S1, and subsequently acquired by ACIWorldwide) PGP (Acquired by Symantec) EntreMed (Now CASIPharmaceuticals) MediSYS Medivation Theragenics Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Georgia UPS FedEx USPS Uber Lyft PostMates AirBnB eBay This is Capitalism CEO Stories is brought to you by Stephens Inc., Member NYSE, SIPC. Nsenga Burton, digital editor of Grady Newsource and an instructor at the Grady College of Journalism at the University of Georgia, talks about how modern media organizations can make their newsrooms more representative of the audiences they serve.
My website gurus tell me this page needs to be “personal” and “not salesy,” but my personal life isn’t all that interesting. Well, since I’m paying them for their expertise, here we go… When people ask where I’m from, I hold up my left hand like anyone born and raised in the Great Lake State of Michigan. I kept the non-accent but left the cold to live in Georgia. Since I have no coordination and therefore stunk at sports, I turned to singing and theater as a teen where I found it was much more fun to be other people than my bookish, nerdy self. Being on stage, I found my happy place and even made some money in high school entertaining at little girls’ birthday parties as Snow White complete with balloon animals and a Pin the Ears on Dopey game. College kicked off with me earning a minor in Theater Performance at Auburn University, but then breaking my AU Tiger mother’s heart when I was accepted to the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism, where I earned a degree in Public Relations. Like any student working her way through school, I probably annoyed you with telemarketing calls and may have even served you drinks and dinner if you ever dined in my college town. My best college job was as a DJ at WDDK in little ol’ Greensboro, Georgia. General Manager Chip Lyness not only gave me a job but a ticket to my future. His love of the broadcast industry was contagious, and I never looked back. Luck brought me cowboy boots and Wrangler jeans when I got a job as a VJ at a local television music video station in Athens, Georgia, which then led me to my first professional post-college job with a country station in Tucson, Arizona. Since I didn’t know squat about country music at the time, I drew a lot on that acting background. These work experiences introduced me to the magic of broadcast advertising. Spent most of my after-college life working in public relations and media including stints as a newspaper reporter, copywriter, on-air talent and non-profit communications director. After doing VO on the side for years, it was time to pull the trigger. Brilliant coach Paul Armbruster helped me channel my theater background and marry it to my broadcast experience by teaching me how to be a voice actor. When I’m not hanging out with my family or voicing at the mic, I’m exploring the outdoors in my red kayak, via my own two feet running, or behind the wheel of my black Jeep Wrangler. When being outside is impossible, I’m reading, playing board games with my family or geeking out on the web searching for more vintage mics to add to my collection. This panel explored theoretical, methodological, and practical issues surrounding the study of media circulation in an age of increasing global connectivity. “Global media” often serves as a placeholder for media outside Anglo-American academic settings, with “global” gesturing towards “Other” media ecologies. This panel brought together scholars and practitioners who wrestle with the simultaneous indispensability and inadequacy of Anglo-American paradigms – both for media practitioners and scholars – in Asian, African, and Latin American contexts. In what ways can we move away from the “national” as the pre-eminent analytic frame? How do media producers in the global south grapple with the challenges and opportunities of globalization? What role are audiences playing in shaping media circuits? In tackling these and other questions, panelists Jonathan Gray, Communication and Media Studies, Fordham University; Carolina Acosta-Alzuru, Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Georgia; African filmmaker Abderrahamane Sissako; and CMS alum Aswin Punathambekar SM ’03, Communication Studies, University of Michigan explored ways in which recent developments in diverse settings worldwide might inform and revitalize our understanding of how media circulates. Henry Jenkins will moderate this forum which kicks off the sixth Media in Transition conference at MIT.
