Episode 104: Kamasi Washington Kamasi Washington is one of the most important voices in modern jazz. A saxophonist, composer, and bandleader from Los Angeles, he has helped shape the sound of contemporary music through his solo work and collaborations with artists like Kendrick Lamar, Thundercat, Dinner Party, Flying Lotus, Andre 3000, Terrace Martin, and Robert Glasper. In this episode of Go With Elmo, Kamasi sits down for a deep conversation about his journey, from growing up in Los Angeles with the greatest young talents all around him to becoming a central figure in a global movement of jazz, hip-hop, and beyond. The LA music scene, the importance of community, and the foundation of the West Coast Get Down collective all come into focus. Kamasi breaks down the West Coast Get Down and the musicians involved, including Thundercat, Ronald Bruner Jr., Cameron Graves, Brandon Coleman, Ryan Porter, Patrice Quinn, Miles Mosley, and Tony Austin, and how that group helped define a new sound coming out of Los Angeles. Kamasi explains why he often performs with multiple drummers and multiple bassists, how he builds such powerful live ensembles, and what it takes to lead large groups of musicians on stage and in the studio. The conversation dives into Kamasi's work on Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, the creative energy of those sessions, how he got the call for the Kendrick gig from Terrace, and their continued connection over time. More recent collaborations like “Luther” and “TV Off” are discussed, along with Kendrick referencing him by name in the lyric “keep a horn on me, that Kamasi,” a moment that reflects his influence across genres. Making his landmark albums The Epic, Heaven and Earth, and Harmony of Difference are explored, along with his approach to jazz saxophone, composition, improvisation, and bandleading. His broader work as a composer, including Becoming and Lazarus, adds to the scope of his career and creative output. The conversation goes deep into music philosophy, creativity, and meaning, including Kamasi's belief that music is bigger than genre and can communicate ideas beyond words. Fatherhood, inspiration, and the evolution of his perspective all play a role in shaping his current work. This is a wide-ranging talk about music, culture, leadership, and the journey of becoming one of the defining artists of this generation. Gravy-powered rocket ship. 12x EBITDA. His dad made him write a P&L for his lemonade stand, even though Brandon Coleman III couldn't pronounce the word "quarters" yet.Same kid. Forty years later. Now he's leading major brands.Another story that shaped his leadership style: Early in his career, he walked into a restaurant and ordered his own promotion. His server looks at him and says: "I wouldn't do that." He waited until the rush died down. Pulled her aside. Asked her why. She told him everything. It's a moment that he never forgot. When you actually listen to your servers, managers, and guests, magic happens. At Cotton Patch Café, Brandon did the unthinkable - lowered prices, increased portions and increased wages! People thought he was nuts! Guess what? It worked, driving 12x EBITDA!Ironically, the best ideas are often not found in the boardroom. They're found at the front line!

Will there be real competition at left guard for the Washington Commanders? After Chris Paul re-signed on a one-year deal, Anthony questions whether the team would have been fine letting him walk, pointing to Brandon Coleman as a potentially better fit in the offensive scheme. But Doc Walker pushes back, arguing the job is firmly Paul's to lose and emphasizing his value as a reliable protector of the quarterback.
Doc Walker welcomes Mitch Tischler, co-host of the Beltway Football Podcast, to break down several key topics surrounding the Washington Commanders in free agency. Mitch explains why wide receiver—specifically a field-stretching threat—has now become the team's biggest need. They also discuss the interior offensive line, including the possibility of Brandon Coleman sliding to left guard if Chris Paul isn't re-signed. Plus, the two dive into the latest surrounding Brandon Aiyuk and debate whether trading a third-round pick for Brian Thomas Jr. would be worth it.
Tâm is the first listener-suggested guest, thanks to regular listener, Brandon Coleman. Tâm is an entertaining and interesting guest that has an in-depth story and many insights to share about life in Saigon, which can be seen by the length of this episode. Born in Texas to Vietnamese refugees, Tâm moved to Saigon after a stint in Singapore. Here in Saigon she worked at an international branding agency but soon started creating Vietnamese-Mexican dishes and hosting dinners out of her apartment, creating a closed-door restaurant named Saigonita. Soon Saigonita appeared in Vice Munchies and was profiled in Saigoneer so she decided to quit her corporate career to pursue her passion in food. Since then, she's been interviewed by publications in Vietnam, Singapore, the US, Italy, France; and has given a TEDx Talk. She is currently getting to more deeply know her roots and explore Vietnam's culinary scene through travels around the country.-------------------Theme music composed by Lewis Wright.Main Cover Art designed by Niall Mackay and Le Nguyen.Episode art designed by Niall Mackay, with pictures supplied by guests and used with permission."Send me a message!"Support the show
