“It was a lot of empathizing. I would do long phone calls with Abel (Tesfaye, aka the Weeknd) after we had met, just basically talking to him and finding out more of his history, where he was at in different phases of his life, where he's at today, and using those to create a character. And part of creating that character is I'll find my own personal stuff to attach to it… Portions of his life I can relate to very much. And past all of that, I think this is the deepest I've gone with my therapy background and my mom and stepdad being therapists. I tried to make the movie work to where if you just want to watch the movie at surface value and go on a ride with it and experience it and not think about it again, hopefully it works on that level. But also if you want to look at it and interpret it on a whole deeper, hopefully richer level, there's a lot going on,” says Trey Edward Shults, director and co-writer of the new film Hurry Up Tomorrow on how he took Able “the Weeknd” Tesfaye's story and made it personal to him.  On today's episode, we sit down with writer/director Trey Edward Shults to discuss his new film Hurry Up Tomorrow that stars the Weeknd, Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan, about a rock star who goes on an existential odyssey after losing his voice on stage.  Shults shares his journey to becoming a filmmaker, working with visionary director Terrence Malick, making the highly biographical film Krisha (2014), and the shockingly ominous horror film It Comes at Night (2017).  He also shares this advice for writing your first film: “It has to be something you are so hungry to tell. And it has to be something you would die to make. You know what I mean? At least to me, my approach was I like to make stuff personal and they always say like, write what you know, write the personal thing. But I just think it needs to be something you're crazy hungry to do no matter what,” says Shults.   To hear more, listen to the podcast.

JOIN TSL WORKSHOPS: https://tslwokshops.circle.so Trey Edward Shults is an inspiration to directors everywhere — including Jeff. His debut feature, KRISHA, was a no-name psychological drama shot in his own home on a shoestring budget under $30K. Against all odds, it won SXSW, screened at Cannes, and eventually sold to A24. KRISHA stands as a beacon for anyone looking to make a personal, ambitious feature with limited resources. Now Trey is collaborating with The Weeknd, and even though their new film HURRY UP TOMORROW feels bigger in scale, Trey's storytelling ethos remains unchanged: center the character, prioritize emotion, and use the camera as a tool to highlight the story — not to distract from it. "Hurry Up Tomorrow" is the new film from Trey Edward Shults, the filmmaker behind films such as "Krisha," "It Comes At Night" and "Waves." The film acts as a companion piece to Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye's sixth studio album of the same name, which was produced in conjunction with the film. It stars Tesfaye as a fictionalized version of himself, an insomniac musician on the verge of a mental breakdown who is pulled into an existential odyssey by a mysterious stranger, with actors Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan also starring. Shults was kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about his work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. Have you thought about approaching birth from a physiological standpoint? Today we are going to talk about how to best prepare for a physiological birth. Let's discuss why it's important to physically and mentally prepare for birth and not just “wing it” and see what happens. We'll explore how you get your partner involved, if you're partnered. Getting your doula and care provider all on the same page is crucial for your birthing experience. Let's not forget about the pelvis! We'll discuss how to prepare the pelvis and the pelvic floor. We can't have a conversation about birth and not include how essential the pelvis and pelvic floor is, am I right?!  To have this conversation, I have Krisha Crosley joining us today on Yoga| Birth| Babies. She is Serenity Life Doula, natural birth coach and natural birth trainer.  This is a fantastic conversation! Krisha has such great advice to offer you. Krisha is hardcore, but I appreciate the way she trains. It's really a full body experience offering. While she is an elite athlete herself, she still has ways to support everyone that wants to work with her at any level of athletic experience. ★ TAKE THE “YOUR GROWN-ASS POWER” QUIZ ★ For passionate women having a “Now what?” moment who are ready to turn on their unapologetic power. http://relationshipalchemy.com/power-quiz Growing up, women have been conditioned to be chronic people pleasers. We've been taught to just nod and accept whatever comes our way. But this mindset doesn't actually work in our favor. Mind Unf*cker Krisha Young aims to help women break unhealthy patterns of self-betrayal and have the courage to set gracious boundaries with the people around them. Saying no can be an act of love and service. Release your old beliefs and start creating a life that aligns with and supports your truth. Tune in to this episode: Just Say No: Creating Better Boundaries with Krisha Young Key points covered in this episode: ✔️ Boundaries are a communication tool to get your needs met. We all have preferences, which when compromised,  can tend to lead to resentment.  ✔️ Follow the PEACE principle! This is what boundaries do for us: Protect us from boundary violators Energize us Affirm our truth Give confidence and clarity to speak up Empower us ✔️ You can't change people, so take personal responsibility. You're here because of childhood wounding and patterns, just like everyone else. Have compassion  and work on empowering and healing yourself. ✔️ Equip yourself with the right tools. Often, we don't know how to respond when our boundaries are crossed. Krisha shares techniques on how to deal with that. ✔️ Boundaries are a way for us to let people in at the right distance. Instead of putting up walls, we need to be more self-loving and set our boundaries with graciousness. Mind Unf*cker and Founder of the Pattern Release Coaching Framework, Krisha Young teaches successful entrepreneurs how to have healthy boundaries and release old patterns of self-betrayal. She's an entrepreneur, coach, published author, and mom of two boys who lives in Vancouver, Canada. I've wanted to know more about this colorful (literally!) celebration for years now. And this year, I finally learned!! For all of us in the Northern Hemisphere, we're approaching spring and what a welcome spring it will be. To kick off the springtime celebrations, we have Rai, a resident of West Bengal in India, to tell us all about the North Indian holiday of Holi (that's H-O-L-I), otherwise known as the Festival of Colors.. Actually, it's known as many things, and we'll be hearing allll about that today. Rai details all the fun she had spraying colors on her friends - and possibly lobbing the occasional water balloon at passerbys (not Rai, of course) - on Holi. As the National Spelling Bee Champion in all of India in 2019, Rai is a hugely knowledgeable guest, and she teaches me so, SO much about the religious and cultural aspects of Holi, including several stories of Vishnu and Krisha, and the breadth of ways these stories are interpreted and celebrated across Northern India. Finally, we talk about Malpuas, a pancake-like treat with soft middles and crispy edges and notes of fennel, then covered with a saffron-soaked syrup. All in all, this is a fun, festive, fascinating episode and I'm just so grateful to Rai for sharing with us and to you for being here! Highlights A typical Holi from morning to night The religious, cultural, and seasonal aspects of Holi  4 names: The Festival of Triumph of Good Over Evil, the Festival of Love, the Festival of Spring Three Hindu stories that underly Holi - Lord Vishnu, Krishna Rai's state of West Bengal The breadth of beliefs across Hinduism about the historicity of Hindu scriptures and the idols and temples in the home Why some states in India burn bonfires the night before Holi Fluffy, crispy malpuas - the techniques to create the perfect middle and edges Creating a sweet sugary syrup Listen Now Also listen on:   APPLE   GOOGLE   SPOTIFY   EMAIL How To Contact Rai Instagram: @browniesandwhims This Episode's Storied Recipe Recipe Shared by Rai Mukhopadhyay Fluffy, Crispy Malpua Recipe These light fluffy Malpua are lightly flavored with fennel and fried in oil  until the edges are crispy and golden.
