A Memorial Day round of golf with a great friend John Donnelly, cracked open one of the most important reminders I needed — that the opportunities, peace, and beauty in your life did not just happen by accident, and it is your job to honor that by being present and paying it forward. I share lessons on gratitude, playing your own game, and why simply being a genuinely good person is still the greatest strategy for unlocking opportunity. If you have been so focused on getting to tomorrow that you are missing today, this episode is for you. Key Takeaways Gratitude is not passive — someone made sacrifices so that you could have the opportunities you have, and you owe it to them and yourself to acknowledge that. Stop rushing to the next thing. If you are always in a hurry to get to tomorrow, you will look back and realize you never truly lived today. There is no single path to your goal. Just because a method works for someone else does not mean it will work for you, and that is not a reason to quit. Know your game. Play to your strengths, understand your style, and stop measuring yourself against how everyone else does it. Being a genuinely good person is the foundation of every real opportunity. It is not about self-promotion — it is about authentic character. Action Steps Today, intentionally stop and take in the scenery of your current life — your home, your workspace, your relationships — and find something worth appreciating in what you have already built. Identify one goal you have been pursuing using someone else's method and ask yourself honestly how you would approach it if you were playing your own game. Do one thing today to make someone else's life better — buy a stranger a drink, send an encouraging message, or simply show up with kindness in whatever space you are in. Notable Quote You are in such a hurry to get to tomorrow that you look back and realize you never lived today.
We would love to hear from you. Send us your thoughts or suggestions.

In this episode of Smashing Secrets, The Beginner's Guide to Qi Men Dun Jia (The “Mystical Doors”) continues, focusing on how to make better decisions and how to achieve better results when aligning actions with the most supportive timing throughout April. This episode explores the shift in energy from Rabbit into Water Dragon, alongside the broader Fire Horse influence, and explains how this pattern of energy will set the tone for the month. The Eight Doors, Life, Open, Harm, Fear, Delusion, Death, Scenery, And Rest, are revisited, outlining what each Door supports and highlighting that none are inherently good or bad. Each Door functions as a tool, with its usefulness depending on the desired outcome and timing. The location for each Mystical Door during the month of April are then mapped out: South (Harm), Southwest (Delusion), West (Scenery), Northwest (Death), North (Fear), Northeast (Open), East (Rest), And Southeast (Life). A simple activation method is shared to set the intention for the aligned action. The episode also briefly touches on April's Flying Star focus sectors, before closing with an invitation to explore further through Patreon and private consultations. In this episode, your hosts hit the dirt running, so to speak, tackling the importance of the scenery in a diorama or vignette, starting with the question of whether we begin by building the setting (an approach Jim has taken of late) or if that comes last (Barry's tendency).
In this episode, the boyz desperately missed James, but made up for his absence with a sweet puppers and kitty. The guys hung out on Jack's couch, had a DOUBLE Cellar Challenge, and enjoyed the change of Scenery. Tickets are on sale now for the Iowa Craft Beer Festival. https://www.iowacraftbrewfestival.com/

Simon Cook is co-founder of Reset Scenery, a Scotland-based organisation working at the intersection of the creative industries and the circular economy. Simon has over 25 years in set construction and more than a decade focused on circular practice, and works to reduce waste in the creative industries by reclaiming, repurposing and rethinking scenic fabrication. Through Reset Scenery's circular programmes, material recovery systems and industry advocacy, Simon champions practical, scalable approaches to sustainable fabrication for stage, screen and live events. Reset Scenery supports the Stage, Screen & Events sectors through reclaimed material redistribution, circular material management strategies and lower-impact construction approaches aligned with initiatives such as the Theatre Green Book. Simon and his co-founder, Matt Doolan are focusing on how to change the whole system – how best can they intervene or educate, and where in the system; how do they help people see the benefits, and make the circular option more affordable and accessible than the scenery that's designed NOT to last. Simon explains some of the ways they embed circular principles directly into design and build processes — helping productions reduce embodied carbon, material waste and disposal costs without compromising technical standards. We'll also hear about Reset Scenery's circular design support for schools, helping build long-term skills and sector resilience through practical, hands-on sustainable practice.

In this episode of Smashing Secrets Feng Shui, Jo introduces the valuable Chinese Metaphysical tool known as Qi Men Dun Jia (the Mystical Doors system), a powerful and sometimes misunderstood school of Chinese metaphysics, historically associated with Sun Tzu's Art of War and used for strategy, timing, and positioning. Jo explains how Qi Men can be applied in Feng Shui, divination, and meditation, especially during the active, unpredictable Fire Horse energy that is quickly growing in intensity throughout March and the spring season, to reduce impulsivity and support calm, clarity, and effective action, and to provide a valuable resource within a world that is becoming more visibly chaotic and unpredictable on a daily basis. In this episode Jo brings an introduction of QiMen to simplify the system by focusing on the Eight Mystical Doors and their uses—Open (opportunity), Rest (harmony and recuperation), Life (wealth and business), Delusion (education and research), Scenery (marketing and beauty), Death (endings and clean breaks), Fear (uncertainty, voice, and possible legal themes), and Harm (pursuit through courts). Jo also shares a simple practice using direction, intention, and timed action, in which to help begin working with this powerful system in an easy and accessible way. When William Shakespeare wrote Hamlet around 1600, the power of London's theater lived almost entirely in language. The stage was mostly bare and the scenery imagined. To mark a shift in setting, an actor might simply declare, “This is the Forest of Arden.”But by the mid-17th century, this mode of performance began to change. Following decades of civil war and Puritan rule, King Charles II's 1660 restoration of the monarchy reopened public theaters that had been closed for nearly two decades. It marked the beginning of the Restoration era, when movable scenery debuted — massive painted flats slid along wooden grooves, transforming the stage in seconds — and women, immigrants, servants and enslaved people first moved across it as performers and stagehands. The English stage became a space of motion, a vivid counterpart to a London rebuilt after the 1665 plague and the Great Fire of 1666.In this Berkeley Talks episode, UC Berkeley Professor Julia Fawcett discusses her 2025 book Moveable Londons: Performance and the Modern City, which traces how this mechanical innovation echoed a deeper cultural one. It was, she says, a “revolution in English performance” that redefined movement, agency and belonging in a rapidly changing city. And that revolution, she contends, provided the template not only for modern theater's moving sets, star actresses and illusionistic stages, but also for ways of moving through — and belonging in — the modern city.Fawcett's talk, which took place on Feb. 11, 2025, was part of a Berkeley Book Chats event hosted by the Townsend Center for the Humanities. She was in conversation with Joshua Gang, an associate professor of English at Berkeley.Listen to the episode and read the transcript on UC Berkeley News (news.berkeley.edu/podcasts/berkeley-talks).Music by HoliznaCC0.Image from Moveable Londons book cover. In the 175 episodes of the Coffee Sprudgecast, only a few are truly dedicated and earnestly focused on that most imporant of concepts: Proof of Taste. And on the latest episode, we take proof of taste to 100. Only the flavors matter. Only the best brew will do. Are you on the list? Are you ready to prove your taste once and for all?? On this week's episode of the Coffee Sprudgecast, hosts Jordan Michelman and Zachary Carlsen start by brewing coffee using a gorgeous ceramic Vandola that was thrown, glazed, and fired in Costa Rica. Then we dive into the world of Scenery Coffee, the London-based coffee company that just took home top honors in the Notable Roaster category at the 17th Annual Sprudgie Awards. Experimental processing, traditional brewing methods, coffee and coffee gear from near and far: truly this episode has it all…and then some! A little more on this incredible vessel you see above, courtesy of Coffee Balam, who sent us their beautiful Vandola Coffee Brewer designed by Minor Alfaro Alpízar along with their Alfaro Master Roast coffee blend of Catuai and Caturra grown and processed on Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula. Together they made a gorgeous, smooth, and beautiful brew. Coffee Balam donates five percent of proceeds to support cultural preservation projects in the Chorotega community. Trying this brewer + roaster combo was a total surprise to us, and we were thrilled to have such a cool concept come in through the general contact form at Sprudge. If you out there in Sprudge land reading this have something incredible you'd like to send our way for future consideration on the pod, get in touch! Meanwhile, Scenery Coffee took home top honors at our global voted Sprudgie Awards, and were kind enough to send along some coffees to sample at Sprudge HQ, with which everyone on team Sprudge was quite impressed. We brewed two of their lovely coffees on this week's episode—India Ratnagiri Estate LAB-6 and Costa Rica Corazón de Jesús "Los Toños" Java—and spent time learning more about both (Scenery's website is excellent). We brewed those coffees this week with the Miir Coffee Hand Grinder, Miir Pourigami brewer, an Acaia Pearl coffee scale, and enjoyed from Slow Pour Supply 2-Way Cups. Check out these coffee tools and other coffee gear at our popular gear hub Coffee Gear! At the end of the day, taste was well and truly proven. Because that's what it's all about. We really can't say it enough. It's all about…proof of taste.

This episode explores the quiet thoughts we have when surrounded by Japan's natural beauty. YUYU shares how viewing landscapes became meditation during difficult times in 2020. I talk about gazing at 3,000-meter mountains in Toyama(富山) and my ocean sunset ritual. We discuss the "sacred" quality of Japanese nature—from Enoshima(江ノ島) to Kumano kodo(熊野古道). Sometimes the best thing to think is simply: "Wow, it's beautiful." Join us for a peaceful reflection on what we fee and don't feel in nature.

On this episode of Norm Hitzges' Just Wondering, Norm rings in the new year by wondering whether a breakup everyone saw coming might actually work out—for both sides. The Cowboys officially move on from Trayvon Diggs, and Norm walks through how a once-promising marriage unraveled: injuries, disagreements over scheme, rehab disputes, fines, frustration, and a quiet but inevitable divorce. When Green Bay claims Diggs off waivers, Norm asks the real question—does Diggs still have that star cornerback inside him, and is this exactly what the Packers need heading into the playoffs? From there, Norm shifts gears to remind us that football doesn't always come down to four quarters, a coaching philosophy, or a season-long narrative. Sometimes, it really does come down to one play—and Norm breaks down a postseason moment where preparation, film study, and perfect execution turned a game on its head. It's a thoughtful, clear-eyed look at player fit, timing, accountability, and why change—when it finally happens—can feel overdue and perfectly logical at the same time.⏱️ Chapters00:00:00 - A New Year and a New Cowboys Question00:01:33 - Why the Diggs–Cowboys Split Was Inevitable00:02:18 - Rehab, Fines, and Philosophical Differences00:03:50 - When Frustration Becomes a Pattern00:04:36 - Waivers, Green Bay, and a Second Chance00:05:27 - Is the Old Trayvon Diggs Still in There?00:06:12 - Why the Packers Are Desperate at Corner00:07:38 - A Perfect Fit—or Just Convenient Timing?00:10:06 - When Defense Carries a Team That Can't Score00:11:40 - The Rare One-Play Football Game00:12:30 - Film Study, Preparation, and a Season-Changing Read00:14:16 - Why One Moment Can Define Everything Check us out: patreon.com/sunsetloungedfwInstagram: sunsetloungedfwTiktok: sunsetloungedfwX: SunsetLoungeDFWFB: Sunset Lounge DFW

photo by Colin Outridge. The exhibition Change of Scenery, marks the painter's third solo show with the gallery. It is the culmination of a year's worth of travel across the U.S., as Brennan Hinton spent extended time in residency in Corsicana, TX, Martha's Vineyard, MA, and Fishers Island, NY. Brennan Hinton's practice focuses on the sustained act of observation, the plein-air discipline, and painting's ability to capture the essence of a place. The time spent in three distinctive towns, each in its own ways divergent from Brennan Hinton's familiar Ontario, required the artist to meet each place with open eyes and a fresh palette. To situate himself, Brennan Hinton leaned on two formative texts, Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry and Moby Dick by Herman Melville, which are each set in the same landscapes in which he painted. Keiran Brennan Hinton (b. 1992, Toronto) lives and works in Toronto and Elgin, Ontario. He received his BFA from Pratt Institute in 2014 and his MFA from Yale University in 2016. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Ogunquit Museum of Art, Ogunquit, ME and The Dennos Museum Center, Traverse City, MI. Past international solo shows of Brennan Hinton's work include exhibitions at MAKI Gallery, Tokyo, Japan (2022); Thomas Fuchs Gallery, Stuttgart, Germany (2021); Charles Moffett, New York, NY (2023, 2021); Nicholas Robert Gallery, Ontario (2022); and Francesco Pantaleone Gallery, Palermo, Italy (2019) among others. His paintings have been featured in institutional exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, Ontario; James Castle House, Boise, Idaho; and Katonah Museum of Art, Westchester, NY. One of the hardest things about triathlon is staying on point with three different sports. Today, we look at tendencies that develop with triathletes and how we can find our sweet spots from one day to the next. We get into your history and experience in each sport and talk about how that can lead you down a certain road. We look at finding motivation to believe in yourself as a swimmer, cyclist, and runner. Do you need to mix things up a little bit, find new scenery, or just take a step back? What are some ways to be in and stay in the moment? It's tough to remember, but just when things seem to be the toughest is when you're close to making a breakthrough. Hang tough and be right where you are. Mike and Robbie's musical preferences for training When you're signed up but start having second thoughts Lawn mowing What's your good distraction escape?
