Having me and my four younger sisters at such an early age, I was old enough to witness her just accept that our father's weren't going to pull their weight. She ended up putting herself through Nursing School and changing her own life through hard work and determination.   My mother is my hero and she never gives up.  She's also the reason I'm funny because she taught me to laugh things off.  I love my Momma!!!

Well today is it's 2nd birthday and we couldn't be happier.  When the podcast was born, doctors told us that most podcasts don't make it to see their 1st, let alone, 2nd birthday.   Well we proved that doctor wrong! We would say f**k doctors but right now, they are in crisis mode dealing with corona virus so we forgive them! A lover of performance, comedy and music since childhood, she holds a BA in Theatre Arts-Performance from Hampton University. In Chicago, she was an ensemble member of Barrel of Monkeys Theatre Company and worked as a teaching artist in Chicago Public Schools. She graduated from The Second City Conservatory and became an understudy for Chicago’s Second City mainstage.  The birth of Rebecca’s first child in 2008 inspired an interest in maternal and child health. She became a Certified Lactation Specialist and worked with the Chicago Department of Public Health and WIC, promoting breastfeeding in African American communities throughout Chicago. She started a blog, a podcast, and co-founded a company that helped parents and health agencies serving low-resource neighborhoods. In 2012, Rebecca, her husband Craston Artis II, and other parents started the African-centered school Watoto Wetu Academy on the south side of Chicago. Rebecca moved with her family to Raleigh, North Carolina in 2014 and soon realized she had to return to acting, writing, and comedy. In 2018 she graduated from the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism & Mass Communications as a Master of Fine Arts in Narrative Media Writing. In 2018, Rebecca also wrote, produced, and starred in a short comedic film, In the Midst of Morons, directed by Dre Robinson. After ITMOM, Dre and Rebecca began a web series called Totally Becky, which screened in eight film festivals, garnering nominations for two awards, and winning Best Web Series at the 2018 Middle Coast Film Festival. Rebecca lives in Raleigh with her husband, two sons (sometimes her bonus daughter too), and her mom from whom she learned the art of comedic timing.

She has also worked as a performer, writer, and teaching artist in Chicago. While studying theater at Northwestern University, Rebecca took classes and improvised on teams at iO Chicago. Later she performed around the United States with Second City Works. She also wrote, produced, and performed shows with 3-woman improv and sketch group Triplette. Among others, Rebecca has performed at Chicago SketchFest, Chicago Improv Fest, San Francisco Sketchfest, Sketchfest NYC and on a tour of colleges. Then she was like, "wait, what's it all for?" She quit show business, got her M.Ed in Bilingual Elementary Education, and moved back to her beautiful, complex home state of North Carolina. While working as a public school teacher in NC, Rebecca started acting again to support her teaching career! It was funny, but it was also sad, and it figured prominently in to her decision to become an SLP, which she highly recommends as a career path for anyone curious. There are so many possibilities! Mike Horn talks about struggling with his self image.  Growing up he had an abusive stepmom who would always insult his weight.  He talks about how he uses over-eating as a coping mechanism when hes stressed.  The lesson of this episode is to accept the reality of a situation whether good or bad.  Because being honest with yourself allows you to fix whatever is wrong.

This was during the reign of the Chappelle Show! Two. Khari had dreads! ( hmmm....I wonder if Khari was wearing shades that day?) The theme of this episode is learning to focus on the things we can control. During that time, I wasn't releasing any episodes that I recorded because I didn't think I was good at interviewing.  The truth is... I wasn't even decent.  But it doesn't matter how good you are.  Whenever you first start something new, you'll probably be bad at it.  Do it anyways! You'll get better! Arriving to America from India, Sumanth had high expectations from his parents to be a Doctor or an Engineer.  Sumanth learned to be become his own man by trying hard, never giving up, and putting himself in positions of discomfort.  He went as far as to dye part of his hair blonde!  Talk about freedom! Ironically, can't visit his parents in India until he gets his natural hair color back.  Sooo... there's that... This episode is about taking risks while gaining skills and confidence on your journey of life.
