Writer's Block ep.662 Everything should be finished. Andrew Newall lives in Scotland and he hopes you enjoyed listening to Writer's Block. He wrote this as a short film script in the 1990's, later adapting it into story format and it was published in 2016 by Open Pen, a magazine based in London in the UK. After some rewrites, the film script won the "Best Short Script" category in the Screen Power Film Festival in June 2023. As yet, the script remains unproduced but the competition win has been encouraging. He also writes and draws comic strips and you can find examples of his work online in Oddball Magazine and Loud Coffee Press.   ---- Listen Elsewhere ---- YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/c/TallTaleTV Website: http://www.TallTaleTV.com   ---- Story Submission ---- Got a short story you'd like to submit? Submission guidelines can be found at http://www.TallTaleTV.com   ---- About Tall Tale TV ---- Hi there! My name is Chris Herron and I'm an audiobook narrator. In 2015, I suffered from poor Type 1 diabetes control which lead me to become legally blind for almost a year. The doctors didn't give me much hope, predicting an 80% chance that I would never see again. But I refused to give up and changed my lifestyle drastically. Through sheer willpower (and an amazing eye surgeon) I beat the odds and regained my vision. During that difficult time, I couldn't read or write, which was devastating as they had always been a source of comfort for me since childhood. However, my wife took me to the local library where she read out the titles of audiobooks to me. I selected some of my favorite books, such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more, and the audiobooks brought these stories to life in a way I had never experienced before. They helped me through the darkest period of my life and I fell in love with audiobooks. Once I regained my vision, I decided to pursue a career as an audiobook narrator instead of a writer. That's why I created Tall Tale TV, to support aspiring authors in the writing communities that I had grown to love before my ordeal. My goal was to help them promote their work by providing a promotional audio short story that showcases their writing skills to readers. They say the strongest form of advertising is word of mouth, so I offer a platform for readers to share these videos and help spread the word about these talented writers. Please consider sharing these stories with your friends and family to support these amazing authors. In this alarming episode Dr. Alexandra Morton provides us with a clear warning of the imminent extinction of our beloved pacific salmon if immediate action is not taken to remove open-pen fish farms from our coastal water ways. Dr. Morton has dedicated her life to the research and understanding of our complex and interconnected coastal ecosystems. She has clearly documented the serious deleterious effects of the fish farms, in particular the devastating effects that sea lice have on out-migrating juvenile salmon. I encourage everyone to support her research and voice in protecting this precious resource. Sean Preston is the founder and editor of short-fiction platform Open Pen, whose self-titled magazine has been described as “More like a shot of absinthe than a boring pint of lager,” and is making its first forays into book production. He's a proud East Londoner, an ex-pro wrestler, a full-time thing-maker at a South London record label, and an occasional short fiction writer. We talk about the deliberately analogue, hard-copy, zine approach that Sean took and the motivations behind that, and how that vision has continued over the years even as they grow into social media, a successful website and live events. In particular, the way that the physical constraints of a printed magazine affect how you publish and how your authors are perceived - and how the infinite digital space gives room to grow. Also, how Sean has kept a free print magazine going for a decade through advertising and sponsorship, and how that model is evolving with their expansion into live events and now books.
