Hell is murky. Today we enter limbo, which is technically the least painful section of hell but actually leaves me with some of the toughest questions in the poem. What does Dante make--what do Christians in general make--of all the noble, wise, and humane people who apparently lived outside the reach of Christ? Were they outside His reach? Are human virtues enough to save us? If so, why aren't we doing better?? Dante, in his characteristic way, rachets these questions up to 11 and then moves through them subtly, confoundingly, and above all, beautifully. His poetry leads us to contemplate what it might look like for God's justice and God's mercy to become one. A couple of weeks ago, we looked at the practices of ancient and medieval Celts, and how those practices were transformed and integrated into Christianity over time. Today, we're shifting the lens eastward to investigate some of the last Europeans to accept Christianity. What did these people believe before the missionaries arrived? And how did their pre-Christian beliefs shape their eventual practice of Christianity, itself? This week, Danièle speaks with Francis Young about who the last pagan holdouts on the continent were, why Christian missionaries struggled to convert these regions, and how pagan traditions were integrated into this new faith. This podcast is made possible by the generous support of listeners like you! THE OLD GODS are asserting themselves and their followers are trying to fulfill the demands of their patron deities. Surprisingly, you wouldn't recognize a pagan if you bumped into one at the local dollar store. They are your friends, coworkers, and even family members. There is nothing to mark them as a practitioner of Wicca, worshiper of Odin, or ceremonial magician. Carl Teichrib, author of the highly recommended Game of Gods, has spent decades, attending meetings, and gatherings of the followers of the left hand path. He tells us that not only are these people respected members of our community, a surprisingly large number of them were formally deeply involved in Christian churches—which they left because they had questions and needs that went unanswered.

Hi, Neighbor! Help us create a wedding gift for a listener who's getting married soon... (Blessings, Eli and Bronte!) THEN: John wrote about public school teachers AND women who file for frivolous divorce, so it has been a busy week of fielding comments (and emails!) from nutty feminists and Christian-identifying-Pagans. We have been laughing a lot, because comedy is all about taking two seemingly random ideas and jamming them together in a surprising way. Let us tell you: Feminists sure are good at connecting random dots into outrage! -Examining Moscow facebook page, not only makes false claims of sexual assault against minor children and shares their pictures online--but also will stalk a parent and use information about their children in a lame attempt to justify "protecting" people from Doug Wilson. (The loose connection between my kids' school and Doug Wilson is comedy gold!) -"G" or "Pretty Face" showed up to talk about why the church needs to be educated about how to spot abusive people, and the Peaches agreed! But Pretty Face didn't want to talk about how to spot and deal with abusive women. Then she started using the word "Sweetie" and the mask was off. (But, boy, what a beautiful face she had under there!) -Heather showed up just when John and the Peaches were brainstorming an excellent new marketing strategy for converting JOHN'S pretty face into cash, and Heather wrote "Oh, you have five kids, huh? I'll be sure to tell the local authorities when they do a welfare check..." She commented in several other places as well, ranting about dangerous Christians being abusive. And THEN she posted a picture of somebody's newborn granddaughter and asked "What are you going to do when she gets married and is BEATEN TO A BLOODY PULP?" I'm telling you, it has been a busy week of unhinged women, who want the church to know how to deal with abuse situations and will be genuinely surprised when it comes back to haunt them. And that was BEFORE we got an email from "a woman" who "started a nonprofit for her daughter" and hopes that we burn in hell eternally. An informed and educated church that handles abuse properly will not tolerate any of these antisocial behaviors from people who claim to represent Christ. Love them, but do not reward their temper fits.

The Outer Realm welcomes the return of Special Guest Morgan Daimler Date: April 1st, 2026 EP: 700 TOPIC: Morgan will be talking about her newly released book "The Fairy Courts- From Folklore to Fiction”. She will also discuss the belief in connections to demons and witches. She talks about Changelings and much more! - The Fairy Courts is an in-depth exploration of its subject, from the original Scottish to modern fiction, mapping out beliefs and how they have evolved. It covers the social structure of fairies, the history of the Scottish Seelie and Unseelie courts, the fairy courts outside Scotland, and it offers a look at how fairy courts are being adapted today in fiction and belief. The Seelie and Unseelie courts have become a staple in fiction and a common idea in pop culture, yet their origins and how they were and are understood in Scottish folklore have become obscure. The Fairy Courts discusses the history of belief as it is traced from the 1500s to today, concluding with a chapter about the ways that folk belief and anecdotes show us how a human might survive in a fairy court. Today's guest, John Kuhn, is the author of Making Pagans: Theatrical Practice and Comparative Religion in Early Modern England (U Pennsylvania Press, 2024). Making Pagans argues that drama played a powerful role in the articulation of religious difference in the seventeenth century. Examining the common scenes of pagan ritual that filled England's seventeenth-century stages—magical conjurations, oracular prophecies, barbaric triumphal parades, and group suicides—Kuhn traces these tropes across dozens of plays, from a range of authors including Ben Jonson, Christopher Marlowe, John Dryden, and Philip Massinger. Tracing connections between the history of stagecraft and ethnological disciplines such as ethnography, antiquarianism, and early comparative religious writing, Kuhn shows how early modern repertory systems that leaned heavily on thrift and reuse produced an enduring theatrical vocabulary for understanding religious difference through the representation of paganism—a key term in the new taxonomy of world religions emerging at this time, and a frequent subject and motif in English drama of the era.Drawing together theater history, Atlantic studies, and the history of comparative religion, Making Pagans reconceptualizes the material and iterative practices of the theater as central to the construction of radical religious difference in early modernity and of the category of paganism as a tool of European self-definition and colonial ambition. Jane Hwang Degenhardt is Professor English at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is the author of Globalizing Fortune on the Early Modern Stage (Oxford UP, 2022) and Islamic Conversion and Christian Resistance on the Early Modern Stage (Edinburgh UP, 2012). Today on Black Dragon Biker TVSegment 1: Pagans Member Admits Role in Assault of Rival Gang Members at West Norriton WawaOn March 23, 2026, Jason William Lawless, 46, a patched member of the Pagans Outlaw Motorcycle Gang from Bridgeport, PA, pleaded guilty in Montgomery County Court to simple assault and conspiracy to commit simple assault. This stems from the October 17, 2025, incident in the parking lot of the Wawa at 2544 West Main Street in West Norriton Township. Lawless and eight other Pagans allegedly rolled up on two members of the rival Unknown Bikers Outlaw Motorcycle Gang, surrounded them, and tried to rip off their colors. The confrontation turned into a shootout — six people were shot, including two innocent bystanders (one took a round to the face while putting air in his tires). Fourteen shell casings were recovered.Lawless is the first of the nine charged Pagans to take a plea. The rest are still facing serious felony charges including aggravated assault, riot, and recklessly endangering other persons. Classic colors dispute that went south fast and dragged civilians into it.Segment 2: SVR's Shadow Looms Over Founder of Night Wolves Biker Gang's Trip to ChinaFresh intelligence report dropped today: Alexander Zaldostanov (aka “The Surgeon” / Khirurg), longtime president and founder of Russia's Night Wolves Motorcycle Club, visited Fudan University in Shanghai in late February 2026. He spoke to Chinese students. What makes it interesting — he wasn't traveling light. He was accompanied by two individuals with known ties to Russia's SVR (Foreign Intelligence Service). The Night Wolves have long been viewed as a Kremlin soft-power/propaganda arm — they helped in Crimea in 2014, do the big “Roads of Victory” runs, and Zaldostanov has been tight with Putin for years. This China trip looks like another layer: using the club for influence work and plausible-deniability outreach while Russia and China keep tightening their strategic partnership. When outlaw-style clubs start moving with intelligence officers on foreign soil, it's no longer just about bikes and brotherhood.Segment 3: Ohio Queer Motorcycle Club Responds to Anti-LGBTQ+ Laws by Teaching How to Fire GunsIn Ohio, the Cleveland chapter of Queers on Gears (an LGBTQ+ motorcycle club) has been quietly running firearm training days. They hold classes in a barn on a family farm in Elyria, with transgender instructors teaching safe gun handling to queer students. The club says the rise in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and rhetoric in Ohio pushed them to create a safe space for community self-defense training. They frame it as a natural fit with motorcycle culture's overlap with firearms. Spent casings on the floor, smiles on faces, and people learning the basics. This one sits at the intersection of identity, politics, and Second Amendment rights — something we don't see every day in the biker world.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-dragon-s-lair-motorcycle-chaos--3267493/support.Sponsor the channel by signing up for our channel memberships. H.A. & Pagans Indicted While Black Outlaws Party — Open Biker TalkGood morning friends. Today on Black Dragon Biker TV, we're covering a wide range of developing stories that highlight just how broad the biker world really is — from indictments and court cases to awareness, accountability, and prevention. We begin in Canada, where Hells Angels clubhouse owners in Surrey are pushing back against allegations of illegal activity. The B.C. government is seeking to seize a property allegedly linked to criminal enterprise, while the owner insists they knew nothing of any wrongdoing. We'll talk about civil forfeiture, burden of proof, and how these cases are increasingly being handled.Next, we head stateside.A violent daytime melee on Sunrise Highway in Suffolk County involving Pagans MC and Hells Angels has left multiple victims with life-threatening injuries. Prosecutors say five men used weapons during the clash, and those men have now been indicted. We'll discuss what's been reported, what charges mean, and how public incidents change the legal landscape. From there, we shift continents.A deadly Chinese manjha (glass-coated kite string) incident caught on camera in Varanasi, India, shows a biker narrowly escaping death when the string catches his neck, leaving a severe shoulder injury. We'll talk about the dangers of manjha, why it continues to be a threat, and what riders worldwide should know. We'll also highlight a positive development:Bikers Against Predators strikes again. An Indiana group's investigation has led to the arrest of a Baxter County man charged with sexual solicitation of minors. We'll discuss how these groups operate, why they're controversial to some, and why they continue to get results. And finally, a reminder that danger isn't always criminal:A navigation app led a biker straight into a 15-foot open well, raising serious questions about over-reliance on GPS and rider awareness. No hype.No sugarcoating.Just real conversation. This is one of those shows where:• Indictments get unpacked• Enforcement tactics get examined• Safety issues get highlighted• And the set talks to the set Call in. On this episode, Razib talks to returning guest, Francis Young, a historian who teaches at Oxford. Young specialises in the history of religion and belief from ancient times to the present day, and provides expert indexes for academic books and translates medieval and early modern Latin. He holds a PhD from Cambridge University and is the author, editor or co-author of over 20 books. On his last visit to the podcast, he discussed his book Pagans in the Early Modern Baltic, an account of the practices and persistence of Baltic paganism down to the 16th-century, the age of the Renaissance and Reformation. Today he discusses his new book, Silence of the Gods: The Untold History of Europe's Last Pagan Peoples. Razib and Young first discuss what it means to be "pagan" in a European context, first during Classical Antiquity, but more recently in Northern Europe down to the early modern period. Young discusses how it is difficult to understand and define paganism without reference to Christianity, which was a major force in shaping the nature of pagan religion in Northern Europe. Razib asks about the specific nature of northeast Baltic paganism, and in particular, the late survivals of pre-Christian religion among Lithuanians and Estonians, and the differences between the two groups. Young explains his understanding of different religious practices and the various forms of non-Christian practice that persisted among different groups, including mixed "creole" identities. Razib also inquires about the Mari El, a Finnic group in the Urals that might be the only continuously officially pagan people in Europe, as well as evidence Young reports that Estonian peasants were never truly fully Christianized.

Why Christians Should Read the Pagans with Alec Bianco and Sean Berube

Today on Ascend: The Great Books Podcast, host Dcn. Harrison Garlick, along with guests Alec Bianco and Sean Berube, explore St. Basil the Great's letter To Young Men, on the Right Use of Greek Literature, passionately arguing that Christians—especially young men—should actively read pagan classics like Homer, Plato, and Hesiod. Check out thegreatbookspodcast.comCheck out our LIBRARY OF WRITTEN GUIDES to the great books.Drawing on personal testimonies, the trio explains how these pre-Christian texts strengthened their own faith, trained natural virtue, sharpened Scripture reading, and revealed seeds of the Logos planted by divine providence. Through vivid analogies—leaves preparing fruit, bees gathering honey, and despoiling the Egyptians—they, supported by St. Jerome's defense, contend that pagan literature is not a threat but a providential gift that grace perfects, forming the soul, evoking wonder, and equipping believers to engage the world with confidence and love.SummaryThe conversation highlights how pagan texts address universal human questions—virtue, meaning, fate, and the divine—preparing the soul for revelation, much as leaves nourish fruit on a branch or mirrors help the immature soul see itself. St. Basil's analogies are unpacked: pagan literature as a shallow pool for beginners, bees selectively gathering honey from flowers, and the need to discriminate good from harmful elements through the standard of Christ. Examples include Odysseus's restraint with Nausicaa as a model of natural virtue and Socrates's near-Christian insights on non-retaliation. The guests stress that grace perfects nature, so training in natural virtue via pagan examples elevates rather than diminishes the supernatural call, challenging modern sloth and low expectations of human potential.Providence is a recurring theme: Hebrew faith and Greek reason converged under Roman order to prepare the world for Christ; parallels in myths (floods, giants, serpents) and the Hellenization of Scripture (Septuagint, New Testament in Greek) show God working through pagan culture. References to Tolkien, Lewis, and Justin Martyr's logos spermatikos underscore that truth found anywhere belongs to Christians. Music and athletics are explored as parallels—pagan modes and contests can form the soul when approached with discernment, just as Doric tunes sobered revelers in Pythagoras's story. The discussion shifts to St. Jerome's Letter 70, defending the use of secular literature against accusations of defiling the Church. Jerome cites Moses educated in Egyptian wisdom, Paul quoting pagan poets, and analogies like despoiling the Egyptians or David wielding Goliath's sword—Christianity takes the best of pagan thought and conquers paganism with it. His provocative image of shaving the captive woman (Deuteronomy) to make secular wisdom a “matron of the true Israel” illustrates stripping away seductive errors to reveal underlying beauty and truth.Ultimately, the episode frames engagement with pagan literature as an act of love: understanding providence, nurturing what is good, evangelizing by meeting souls where they are, and ascending toward the Logos who permeates all reality. The tone is confident and joyful, rejecting both puritanical fear and uncritical consumption in favor of prudent, Christ-centered discernment.KeywordsChristians read pagans, pagan literature Christians, St Basil pagan literature, St Basil Greek literature, why Christians read Homer, why Christians read Plato, classical education Christianity, great books Christianity, and pagan classics faith.
