Soho was once a thriving melting pot of speakeasies, sex work and organised crime. From razor gangs of the 1920s to money laundering, the area has always been a hotbed for thieves, conmen, drug dealers, and shady goings-on… but it's also provided fertile ground for revolution, ground-breaking jazz, rock n roll and countercultural movements. Joining Dan to discuss the extraordinary history of London's most notorious neighbourhood in the 1920s is sex historian and host of the Betwixt the Sheets podcast Dr Kate Lister. Historic Soho has been brought to life in the new BBC show Dope Girls, which tells the story of Soho when female gangs ran the nightclubs after the First World War. Annetta, like many of us, was stuck in an endless loop of directing short films, but remained true to her taste and principles, whilst waiting for the TV and Film industry to reach the place where her voice is situated. We dig down into her journey and talk about the following:   -Why did you begin directing? -Do you think schemes are helpful? -How did you get your break in TV directing? -What is the biggest difference between shorts and TV? -How do you prep when working in TV? -What is a script supervisor? -What are the most difficult challenges a director faces when working in TV?   Biography Annetta is a Writer/Director and the founder of Roman Candle Productions, a film production company focused on black and female–led films. Her short films have screened at national and international film festivals including Encounters Film Festival, London Short Film Festival, Aesthetica Film Festival, Pan African Film Festival and Uppsala Film Festival. Her short films have earned her the Best Film award at the BFM International Film Festival/Screen Nation for WINNIE AND THE DUPPYBAT, which was also a finalist for the HBO Short Film Award at the American Black Film Festival. She won the Best Screenwriter award at the Indian Cine Film Festival in Mumbai for SCARLET, Best Short Film award at the Black International Film Festival for AFRO PUNK GIRL and was BAFTA long-listed for her last short film THE ARRIVAL. Annetta is currently developing her feature film COLONY ROOMS, a drama set within the Caribbean community in 1960s Soho London, with the BFI and producer Joy Gharoro Akpojotor (Blue Story, Boxing Day). She is also developing her 2nd feature film WILD SWIMMING (RIVER MISTRESS) with producer Yvonne Isimeme Ibazebo (Netflix/Top Boy, Fox Searchlight/Rye Lane) and Film4, and developing her first TV series LEMON FISH with Buccaneer Media. Throughout history, venues have helped define and nurture scenes. Sometimes music venues become central to the scenes they support. For example, The Hacienda in Manchester become synonymous with the Madchester scene in the early 90s.From the 1960s to the late 1990's, a tiny venue in Soho (London) became the heart of a music scene that spawned phenomenal stars. The venue was Bunjies. Although it wasn't a venue so much as it was a coffee shop with a tiny basement. We could list the acts who performed at Bunjies, but we figured it would be far more interesting to speak to someone who was there. Nick Blatchley is that man! this was a well known case although virtually forgotten today, a prosecution for a conspiracy to corrupt public morals. There were a number of prosecutions for this charge in the 1960s, almost all were found guilty. Usually the cases were for showing 'blue' movies or adverts placed by GAY men in newspapers such as the underground paper International Times (IT). The Oz and the IT trials are better remembered today. The offence  of conspiracy to  'corrupt public morals' isn't properly described or found in any public statute. It is when the authorities think something should be done about something the law has not previously forbidden. This case was made up by public authorities in 1960 to prosecute the Ladies Directory publisher Fred Shaw. Please be warned, this podcast is lo-fi and has not been edited and I am not a good narrator. www.strangestoriesuk.gmail.com

She inspired many other artists including Bjork, Iggy Pop and Morrissey. Yet NICO’s life has often been reduced to a series of myths about junkiedom, decay, difficult behaviour and wasted talent.Rock ’n’ Roll historian Jennifer Otter Bickerdike comes to the Bureau to set matters straight and talk about her upcoming book 'You Are Beautiful and You Are Alone: The Biography of Nico’ (Faber). We dig into why female musicians, junkies and artists in the counterculture have been treated differently, even mythologised differently, than their male counterparts; why Iggy Pop is so cool and why Nico still matters. For more on Jennifer Otter Bickerdikejenniferotterbickerdike.comFor more on Bureau of Lost Culturebureauoflostculture.comThis is the Soho Radio podcast, showcasing some of the best broadcasts from our online radio station, right from the heart Soho London.Across our Music and Culture channels, we have a wide range of shows covering every genre, along with chat shows, discussions and special broadcasts. To catch up on all Soho Radio shows from both our music and culture channels head on over mixcloud.com/sohoradio or tune in live anytime at sohoradiolondon.com.This is a Soho Radio Productions Podcast.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/soho-radio.
