On today's episode, I talk to musician and cartoonist Jeffrey Lewis. Originally from the Lower East Side, Jeffrey has bounced back and forth between his two loves comics and music for most of his professional life. As a cartoonist, Jeffrey's longest project was Fuff, which he wrote and drew from 2004 to 2020. He also created Revelations in the Wink of an Eye (My Insane Musings on Watchmen, from Conspiracies to Stupidities), and his most recent project is called Statics, which he started writing and drawing in 2022. As a musician, Jeffrey began as part of the New York antifolk scene that would play at the SideWalk Cafe in the 1990s. He released his first album When Madman Was Good - Version One in 1997, and four years later he was signed to Rough Trade, who released his first "official" album The Last Time I Did Acid I Went Insane. Since then, he's released over two dozen albums and EPs, and his latest The Even More Freewheelin' Jeffrey Lewis just came out on Blang Records, and it's a banger! In this episode, Graham Coath sits down with Andy Golding of Dragon Welding to talk about the band's new album, The Naughty Step, and its unique fusion of 80s electronica, indie noise-pop, and raw lyrical storytelling. From childhood memories of school punishment to reflections on unresolved struggles, Andy shares the deep personal themes behind the album and the creative journey that led to its release. We also explore Dragon Welding's evolution, the electronic reinvention of their sound, and how vocalist Nik Cockshott has brought a new dynamic to the music.Plus, we chat about the stunning stop-motion video for the title track, created by award-winning graphic artist Andy Royston, and dive into the DIY ethos and experimental energy that defines Dragon Welding. If you're a fan of The Wolfhounds, 80s synth sounds, or boundary-pushing indie music, this one's for you.

Basia Bulat is a Canadian folk singer-songwriter. Born in Toronto into a family of Polish immigrants, music was always a close presence in the family home: her mother taught piano and guitar. After graduating with a degree in English literature from the University of Western Ontario, she began to pursue music as her own career path. Her debut album, Oh, My Darling was released by Rough Trade in 2007, and blended traditional folk with modern sensibilities. The record garnered critical acclaim and set the tone for a career marked by emotional depth and melodic richness. Known for her intimate live performances, my guest has earned a devoted international following and multiple award nominations, cementing her place as a vital voice in contemporary folk music. Her new album, Basia's Palace, is released later this week, and was produced in between bouts of playing RPGs. Be attitude for gains. https://plus.acast.com/s/my-perfect-console. Hosted on Acast. Alan Tyler in conversation with David Eastaugh http://www.alantyler.com/ https://alantyler.bandcamp.com/merch/how-to-never-have-a-hit-the-confessions-of-an-unsuccessful-singer-songwriter Alan Tyler is the singer of The Rockingbirds, the chaotic, swashbuckling country-rockers who galloped haphazardly into the 90s Camden indie scene, got signed, appeared on Top Of The Pops, went head to head with Nirvana at Reading ‘92, and produced, eventually, four albums of unsurpassed Americana. From DIY/punk beginnings, in 1980 Tyler arrived at the experimentalists' haven of the London Musicians Collective and was soon playing swingy pop at Bernie Rhodes' Club Left, sharing the agitpop aspirations of Scritti Politti and other Rough Trade acts before being there at the dawn of Creation Records. At various times he's been a choirboy, a fanzine writer, a Young Socialist, a tap dancer, a polytechnic philosopher, a cycle dispatch rider, a news-monitoring video pirate, an ill-suited civil servant, and a Deptford Creek dwelling river poet. Long after his Heavenly Recordings heyday, Tyler remains a stalwart of London's roots music scene: a critically recognised singer-songwriter who has never had a single hit.

It's jangly and jarring, but irresistibly hypnotic. Mark E Smith chants this incantation as if he is literally crawling out of his skin. The performance is teeth grinding punk rock in its distilled essence. a portrait of a poet in service to anarchy. And, funny. Deeply biting and ironical, this was DJ champion, John Peel's favorite group. The lyrics here seem improvised, but he's a gonzo beat poet extraordinaire - he's written it all down, and delivers it with his signature repetition in a discordant bray. “You don't have to be weird to be wiredYou don't have to be an American to be strangeYou don't have to be strange to be strangeYou don't have to be weird to be weird”After seeing the Sex Pistols in '76 Mr Smith had a vision that carried him for 42 years through a ridiculous number of personnel changes. It doesn't matter who is playing as long as Mark is at the mic. He said once, “if it's me and your granny, it's The Fall”.Mark was a difficult, complex man who died in 2018 at the age of 60, leaving behind 32 studio albums and countless live versions. One could pick out practically any Fall tune, and experience that singular voice - “attitude personified,” one journalist dubbed it. I chose this cut because it makes me smile every time I hear it. I hate being in that condition myself, but it's fun to vicariously share Mark's flirtation with psychosis.

Philly-based Native Harrow have remained largely independent - musically, professionally, and aesthetically, since their beginning, meticulously crafting and perfecting a sound that is melded together from pieces of folk, soul, and rock n' roll. On 13th September, they release new album Divided Kind. This album is the lifetime's work of two scholars of music whose individual backgrounds in the arts have forged a strict artistic discipline that exists in sharp contrast to the more traditionally laissez-faire world of rock and popular music. Pre-save Divided Kind here. Over a catalogue of six albums, Native Harrow have produced a discography of “rich, engrossing records” and “instant classics” while single-mindedly following their own artistic code, acquiescing only to the exigence of the song: each song its own world with its own rules. Their original perspective and extraordinary songwriting, combined with a completely individual approach to crafting albums and steering their career, has garnered them coverage at Uncut, Mojo, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, The Line of Best Fit, Paste, American Songwriter, The Bluegrass Situation, Holler, Rough Trade, Telegraph, The Evening Standard, The Times, Shindig, The Sun, and many more. They've shared stages with legends including the Eagles, Robert Plant & Alison Kraus, and Beth Hart, as well as acts including Sierra Ferrell, The Heavy Heavy, Courtney Marie Andrews, The Cactus Blossoms, Great Lake Swimmers, Esme Patterson, and more. #Music #Interview #Albums
"Top 5 Winter Songs? A winter themed episode, lads? In August?!? Good timing, doofuses!" We hear you, imaginary (and, frankly, rather rude) podcast critic. And our retort is that our friends in the southern hemisphere are still firmly in the grips of winter. For example, our Third Lad this week, one of the greatest songwriters that Australia has ever produced (and an artist who is on the short list of Brett's musical heroes), Peter Milton Walsh from The Apartments! PMW has led the Apartments in various incarnations since 1978, starting with the spiky indie pop of the EP 'The Return of the Hypnotist' on The Go-Betweens' Able Label. After brief stints with The Go-Betweens and Ed Kuepper's post-Saints band The Laughing Clowns, the Apartments reformed in 1984 with the classic single "All You Wanted." Their first full length, 'The Evening Visits...And Stays For Years', followed in 1985 on Rough Trade, with the 1987 single "The Shyest Time" featured on the John Hughes soundtrack for Some Kind of Wonderful. Among the Apartments' string of breathtakingly gorgeous, diverse records are 'Drift' (1993), 'A Life Full Of Farewells' (1995), 'Apart' (1997), 'No Song No Spell No Madrigal' (2015), and 'In And Out Of The Light' (2020). For the uninitiated, Welcome to Walsh World! Peter stopped by in between sessions for a forthcoming record. Just as a small forewarning, we recorded our lists afterwards...so any juvenile, off-topic or off-colour side conversations about pillows, tank tops, getting lost in department stores, or Art Garfunkel lookalikes are no reflection on the pure class of Mr. Walsh. Hopefully, to quote the man himself, we didn't "take something good and make a mess of it". Special thanks to Marc Shea from the great fellow Pantheon show Performance Anxiety for the introduction, and much gratitude to Peter's wife Kate for the coordination. This was an incredible thrill for us! Proud members of the Pantheon Podcasts family. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. This week on the pod we're joined by Lou Barlow. We talked about the 1980 Rough Trade compilation, "Wanna Buy a Bridge?" We honestly chat mostly about the comp and its influence on Barlow's taste early on and throughout his time in Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh and Folk Implosion. And -- If you weren't aware Folk Implosion is back together and they just released their first new album since 1999, twenty five years ago. Well 20 years ago if you count The New Folk Implosion, without John Davis, his writing partner on the project. The new album, "Walk Thru Me," is out now on Joyful Noise Recordings. Pick that up direct from the band or wherever you stream music. https://thefolkimplosion.bandcamp.com/ Lou also does a podcast with his wife, Adelle Barlow, called Raw Impressions, so check that out too. https://open.spotify.com/show/5H0j91I0qabIiBqv9nX0yy?si=11dba4166ff44cd6 Subscribe to our Patreon here: www.patreon.com/spinningoutpod Follow us on social media -- twitter and instagram (@Spinningoutpod)

It's not music for dancing, but maybe it can make you dream." 04:11 01:08:11 Opening background music: Unknown Artist, side A, Ambient Battle Samples: Phase One: Enter The Stargate Manifold...(2003 The Crypticon Media Cartel). Born and raised in Wales, Moxham grew up with his brother and future YMG bandmate Philip Moxham during the late 50s and into the 60s with influences such as The Kinks and The Beatles. picking up the guitar on a cosmic whim, starting the incredibly infleuntial and acclaimed Young Marble Giants, signing with Rough Trade, the legend and legacy of the band, his solo career and most recently his new album entitled "fabstract" that was released earlier this week.
Peter K. Hogan is an English writer and comics writer, best known for Resident Alien, which he co-created with artist Steve Parkhouse. Hogan began his comics career as editor of cult British comic magazine Revolver in 1990–1991, before working for 2000 AD, American comic book publishers Vertigo, America's Best Comics and Dark Horse Comics Hogan worked as a record company press officer for Rough Trade during the early days of The Smiths, and for IRS Records where he worked for R.E.M., as well as writing about music and film, for magazines like Melody Maker and Sky and Vox, and much later on Uncut. He went on to write books about The Bangles, The Doors, Queen, R.E.M., The Velvet Underground and Nick Drake. He also was a contributing writer to a biography about The Monkees pop group. In the 1990s, Hogan wrote for some titles on DC Comics' Vertigo imprint, including The Dreaming and The Sandman Presents: Love Street. Most recently, his unpublished followup to the latter, The Sandman Presents: Marquee Moon, was published online.[2] Like Love Street, Marquee Moon is a tie-in to Neil Gaiman's The Sandman and offers a look at the early days of John Constantine of Swamp Thing and Hellblazer fame. Since 2011 Hogan has worked on his own Resident Alien series for Dark Horse. This has been adapted by Chris Sheridan into a live action TV show. Stan Erraught in conversation with David Eastaugh The Stars Of Heaven were formed in 1983 by Stephen Ryan (vocals, guitar), Stan Erraught (guitar, formerly of The Peridots), Peter O'Sullivan (bass guitar), and Bernard Walsh (drums). They were strongly influenced by The Byrds and Gram Parsons, even being labelled "Ireland's answer to The Byrds, Gram Parsons and the Velvet Underground all in one package". After a début single on the Hotwire label ("Clothes of Pride") which received airplay from John Peel, they were signed by Rough Trade, who issued the album Sacred Heart Hotel in 1986, which reached number 11 on the UK Independent Chart. Peel's patronage continued throughout their career, with the band recording four sessions for his BBC Radio 1 show, the first of which was included on Sacred Heart Hotel. They also appeared on RTÉ television. They released a further single and EP ("Never Saw You"/The Holyhead EP) which was a top five hit on the independent chart, and in 1988, Rough Trade released their second and final album, Speak Slowly, which peaked at number 6. Speak Slowly included the track Lights Of Tetouan, although this was not released as a single. The song is written by the band's singer, Stephen Ryan, about growing up on the south coast of Spain from where he could see the Moroccan town of Tetouan. Lights Of Tetouan was covered by Everything But the Girl on their 1994 EP Rollercoaster. Along with the original, as this version is a B-side, it is not widely known/available. However, it is available for listening/viewing online. The band split up shortly after the release of Speak Slowly with Ryan going on to form a new band, The Revenants, along with former members of The Would-Be's and Something Happens, who released two albums (Horse of a Different Colour and Septober Nowonder) in 1993 and 1995, respectively.

Elizabeth and Erin chat with indie rock icon Miki Berenyi of the '90s band Lush about her critically acclaimed memoir, "Fingers Crossed," hailed by Rolling Stone and Rough Trade as one of the best autobiographies ever. Miki opens up about her unique upbringing by her eccentric Hungarian sports journalist father and her Nazi-sympathizer grandmother, the turbulent London post-punk scene, and the highs and lows of being in a band that influenced so many musicians, including Kurt Cobain. In this interview, Miki tells us about the agonies and ecstasies of life with a boundary-less, hard-partying, single dad at the helm, and the perils of being treated like an adult when you're six. She also shares the shocking family secrets uncovered in her memoir, which Miki didn't know about until the end of her father's life. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tell-me-about-your-father/support
