The Rocketeer is a 1991 American superhero film from Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Joe Johnston, it stars Billy Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin, Timothy Dalton, Paul Sorvino, and Tiny Ron Taylor. The Wolf Man explores a disturbingly realistic vision of what it would take to turn a man into a werewolf. Does this horror movie have any basis in science fact? There's something universal (no pun intended) about the concept of a human being shape-shifting back into a more primal state. And if these tales were terrifying around a campfire, they're even more effective on screen, where all of the brilliant special effects Hollywood has to offer have long been brought to the table to transform ordinary actors into bloodthirsty werebeasts.But just where (“where oh, werewolf…”) does this story come from? Is there any chance at all that humans can devolve into a more animalistic state? The Rocketeer. Maybe you've seen it. Maybe you haven't. If you're of a particular generation, particularly of an age that had their brains absolutely melted by Tim Burton's Batman movie in 1989 (which we have an episode on the way about), then The Rocketeer was one of a slate of summer movies that hoped to replicate the runaway success of Batman. For some folks, it sure did. For others…notably the general ticket buying public, it fell a little short.But The Rocketeer is a truly wonderful movie that has accumulated a deserved cult following over the years. Its central concept is simple enough: stunt pilot Cliff Secord accidentally stumbles on to a prototype rocket pack being developed for possible military use. The only problem is that Nazi spies want to get their hands on it. All poor Cliff wants to do is impress his girlfriend. Adventure (and hijinx) ensue on schedule.Full of spectacular practical effects flight sequences, The Rocketeer, like the Indiana Jones or Star Wars franchises before it, is a wonderful homage to the movie serials of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. Part of its appeal is the simplicity of that “solo flight via jetpack” concept, and it's one that has a fair amount of basis in real history and science! It's available on Disney+ and it's a delightful, nostalgic, family-friendly, action-packed romp that is a little similar in tone to the Indiana Jones franchise. No sequels or big franchises here, but that's part of the charm.However, that doesn't mean there isn't cool Rocketeer-adjacent stuff for you to check out! Joe Johnston is an underrated director and we'd humbly recommend Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (hmmm…a potential future Does it Fly? episode, perhaps?), Jumanji, The Wolfman (a terrific horror movie that's due for re-evaluation), and Captain America: The First Avenger.But for those looking to dig even deeper, the Rocketeer concept was inspired by the movie serials of the 1930s, ‘40s, and early ‘50s, specifically Republic Pictures' excellent King of the Rocket Men (1949), Commando Cody: Sky Marshal of the Universe (1952), and Zombies of the Stratosphere (1953). The Rocketeer blasted onto the scene in 1982, created by writer/artist Dave Stevens as an homage to pulp-serial heroes of the 1930s! Despite producing only a handful of issues of The Rocketeer's adventures, the character and Stevens' work were an inspiration to readers and peers alike, and led to the cult-classic 1991 film by director Joe Johnston. Directed by Joe Johnston, and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper, Chris Owen, Laura Dern, Willam Lee Scott, and Chad Lindberg, the film is based on the memoir of the same name, and tells the true story of Homer H. Hickam Jr., a coal miner's son who was inspired by the launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957 to take up rocketry against his father's wishes to eventually become a NASA engineer.

And a WVU study examines the habits of successful entrepreneurs…on today's daily304. #1 – From WBOY-TV – If you're from West Virginia, odds are you've heard of Homer Hickam's 1998 book “Rocket Boys.” You might have even watched the movie adaptation, “October Sky.” The movie, which was released in 1999 and starred Jake Gyllenhaal as Homer Hickam, follows Homer's story of growing up in Coalwood, West Virginia with a dream of building rockets.  But why was the movie titled differently? Hickam said that the name of the movie was changed from “Rocket Boys” to “October Sky” to make the movie more appealing for women, based on marketing studies by Universal Studios. But October Sky is also an anagram of Rocket Boys, meaning they have the same letters just switched around in a different order. Lee's research revealed when someone leaves employment because they disagree with their company's organization and operation, they are overwhelmingly likely to thoughtfully organize their own business and succeed as an entrepreneur. Lee, assistant professor at the WVU John Chambers College of Business and Economics, also discovered when someone's first start-up does fail, taking personal ownership of that failure is key to success down the road. The Strategic Management Journal published Lee and her coauthors' analysis of interviews conducted with 21 male entrepreneurs who, between 1977 and 1997, started their own businesses after resigning jobs during the early stages of the rigid disk drive industry, which makes computer data storage devices. When organizational misalignment was someone's impetus for starting a business, the founder was almost certain to engage in “venture crafting” at his start-up. “These kinds of founders wanted to build organizations, not just products,” Lee said. “They encouraged employees to take ownership of their work, established distributed decision-making processes and ensured employees held equity stakes in their companies.” In addition to venture crafting, those with successful entrepreneurial careers focused on hiring skilled, collaborative employees. Second in our series of pulpy/throwback comic back adaptations (that failed) this adaptation takes us back to the 1930s, an era with rocket powered heros, thin moustachioed villians and swashbuckling action.
