Oreo Jones (aka Sean Michael Smith) is not only one of Indianapolis' biggest musical success stories of the last decade, he is one of Indianapolis' most influential cultural leaders. He is a prolific musical artist, recording as Oreo Jones, Michael Raintree, as a band member of White Moms, and as part of the hip-hop supergroup 81355 ('“Bless”). He is Staff Artist and Musical Curator at Big Car and at WQRT Radio. He is co-founder of Chreece Festival, which celebrates another year on August 26, 2023 in Fountain Square in Indianapolis. I was honored to spend time with Sean, to hear more about his life, his approach to creativity and community, and the origins of Chreece. Hope you enjoy what I found to be an inspiring conversation with Oreo Jones.

This is technically the first episode of this podcast, & we recorded it before I even knew what I wanted to call it. We actually thought of the name as soon as I stopped recording, which is what made me go back and record the Intro episode first. In this episode I talked with my friend Oreo Jones about his life as an artist in Indiana. From rapping to starting bands to starting a cooking show to creating our Hip-Hop Festival here in Indy, he's done it all & inspired me alot in the past years. He's also partially the reason why I had the confidence this podcast. Its so many people like him here that get an idea & believe in it and just start going through with it, and thats something alot of people are afraid to do. So once you get past how awkward I sound since I never did this before, I hope you enjoy this convo I had with my bro. I hope it inspires you to get up and get something done as well! All we got is time. A hip-hop artist, music enthusiast, and lover of all things creative record in a tiny home... Tune in to Oreo Jones' story as a leader in the evolution of Indianapolis' hip-hop culture. Sean "Oreo" Jones grew up in a small town where he found solace in its DIY music scene. He moved to Indianapolis because he felt drawn to his paternal roots, and in his loneliness of living in a new city, began to write. Oreo now has five albums, an Acorn Award for influencing culture, and is managing Indianapolis' Hip-Hop festival, Chreece. Oreo shares the background to his most recent album "Through the Depths of Hell I Picked Up the Phone" which was released under the name "Michael Raintree." This album features many collaborations with local artists and is the first album where Oreo crafted both the beats and the lyrics. Turn the volume up to learn about hip-hop culture in Indianapolis, the growing DIY music scene in Fountain Square, and Oreo's recent wild trip to Madagascar.
