Thom Francis introduces us to poets Susan Kress and Will Nixon. Both of whom were finalists in the 2025 Stephen A. DiBiase Poetry Prize Contest. -------- The 2025 Stephen A. DiBiase Poetry Prize winners and finalists were recently announced with many poets from the Capital Region and Hudson Valley included in the list. The DiBiase contest was created in 2015 to offer a more inclusive and welcoming alternative to traditional poetry competitions. There are no entry fees, no line or page limits, and no restrictions on subject matter, form, publication history, or age, making it especially appealing to younger poets. Each year, approximately $2,500 in prize money is awarded, with $500 going to the first-place winner and the rest distributed among top finishers. Last week we heard from finalist Howard Kogan, who shared his poem, “Mourning Becomes Her.” This week we will hear from Hudson Valley Writers Guild members Susan Kress and Will Nixon. First up is Susan Kress. Her poem “Fire-Proof Box” was an Honorable Mention in this years contest. Before she reads her poem, she tells me more about the inspiration of the piece. Susan Kress was born and educated in England and now lives in Saratoga Springs, NY, having taught at Skidmore College for many years. Her poems appear in Nimrod International, The Southern Review, New Ohio Review, Salmagundi, New Letters, South Florida Poetry Journal, Valparaiso Poetry Review, Third Wednesday, Gyroscope Review, La Presa, and other journals. The next poet up to the mic is Will Nixon who will read his poem “Orpheum.” Will Nixon is the author of the poetry collections, “My Late Mother as a Ruffed Grouse” and “Love in the City of Grudges.” With Michael Perkins he is the co-author of “Walking Woodstock: Journeys into the Wild Heart of America's Most Famous Small Town.” He has also written “The Pocket Guide to Woodstock.” He now lives in Kingston, NY. For more information on the Stephen A DiBiase Poetry Prize and to read the poems from the winners, finalists, and honorable mentions, go to https://dibiasepoetry.com.

The Wildhearts formed in 1989 and over years since have celebrated top 20 singles and top 10 albums and sell out tours all over the world while navigating record company battles, industry politics, multiple line up changes, drugs, depression, splitting up, going on hiatus and getting back together again. Ginger has always been open about his struggles with mental health issues and in this episode, he joins me to chat about how these things have impacted his life and his music over the years. We chat about him being sectioned last year and how that forced him to make some big life changes and how all of this led to the incredible new Wildhearts record ‘The Satanic Rites of The Wildhearts' We chat about moving to the countryside and learning to slow down, how he took control over his mental health by asking himself some very difficult questions and why doing the inner work is worth it despite being really hard to do. And we chat about approaching the world from a place of love, the healing power of music and animals and looking forward to the ultimate test of his new approach to life when the band hit the road this month. Welcome to our 32nd episode in the monthly book discussion series hosted by Marisa Serafini (@serafinitv) and myself, Phil Svitek. If books are your passion, you've come to the right place! In this episode, we delve into Near To the Wild Heart which is a novel by Clarice Lispector. Near to the Wild Heart (Perto do coração selvagem) is Clarice's debut novel, written from March to November 1942 and published around her twenty-third birthday in December 1943. The novel, written in a stream-of-consciousness style reminiscent of the English-language Modernists, centers on the childhood and early adulthood of a character named Joana, who bears strong resemblance to her author: "Madame Bovary, c'est moi", Lispector said, quoting Gustave Flaubert, when asked about the similarities. The book, particularly its revolutionary language, brought its young, unknown creator to great prominence in Brazilian letters and earned her the prestigious Graça Aranha Prize. Join the conversation! Share your thoughts, queries, and viewpoints in the comments or connect with Marisa (@serafinitv) and me on social media. In our upcoming discussion, we'll explore Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire.

This episode explores the themes of mysticism, spirituality, and the sacredness of everyday life, examining the nature of mystical experiences, the importance of love, and how grief can lead to deeper spiritual understanding. “It took me years to reclaim my creative life as not other than my spiritual life but the very place my spirit flowers,” says Mirabai Starr award-winning author, internationally acclaimed speaker and a leading teacher of interspiritual dialogue. In this episode, we speak with Mirabai about how she created an intimate, welcoming tone in her most recent book, Ordinary Mysticism: Your Life as Sacred Ground. We speak, too, about the intersections of creative practice and spiritual practice, the importance of the imagination, dismantling the hierarchy of the mentor/protege relationship, and how she steps out of the way to let “the [creative] thing” come through. In 2020, Mirabai Starr was honored on Watkins' list of the 100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People. Drawing from twenty years of teaching philosophy and world religions at the University of New Mexico-Taos, Starr now travels the world sharing her wisdom on contemplative living, writing as a spiritual practice, and the transformational power of grief and loss. She has authored over a dozen books, including Wild Mercy, Caravan of No Despair, and God of Love. Starr has received critical acclaim for her revolutionary contemporary translations of the mystics John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila and Julian of Norwich. A WILD HEART SIPPING A CUP OF A PERSONAL KIND OF COURAGE TEA I came to the idea of a Wild Heart Tea when the Faerytale Apothecary first launched in 2019. The story of the Courage Monster had appeared under the bed and, having read Alice Hoffman's The Rules of Magic, where characters are asked to choose between Courage or Caution Tea (though there is only ever Courage Tea in the pot no matter what you choose), I got curious as to what a Courage Tea might have in it. I created it, packaged it with love, and sent it out to some folks alongside the story. You can listen to it here - https://thefaerytaleapothecary.substack.com/p/wild-hearts-sipping-cups-of-tea My thoughts of late began to turn again to the idea of Courage Tea. What would it contain now, I wondered, and how would a personal tea differ from one available to all? Press play to find out…

PLEASE READ BEFORE LISTENING To celebrate my successful completion of Yoga Nidra Level One, Level Two, Scriptwriting and Further Studies Training, this Moon Cycle's Wild Heart Tea is a very specially created Yoga Nidra. Yoga Nidra is a form of Deep Rest where nothing is asked of you. A practice of relaxing our state of awareness and entering into a dream-like comfortability. When listening to the recording, please make sure you can be somewhere that you will not be disturbed, and that all devices are on airplane mode with no vibrate, or turned off completely. Create yourself a luxurious and cosy nest - this can be on a bed, in a chair, on the floor, outside in the grass - whatever place will work best for you to feel comfortable and secure. You may want a favourite blanket to cover yourself with, a soft pillow for your head and under your knees. Experiment with what will help you feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible. Likewise, wear whatever will help in this regard too. There will be a series of invitations but everything is open to what feels alive for you in each moment. It is okay if your attention wanders away from my voice, let it land for you as feels right for you. I f thoughts come up that feel disruptive, gently guide yourself back into an awareness of my words. There is no way to get Deep Rest wrong! Each experience is uniquely for you. The recording will be about 33 minutes long and there will be moments of silence to give you a sense of spaciousness and unhurried time together, know I am still with you. If you need to move your body because you are in discomfort, please do so. If anything said in the Nidra feels uncomfortable for you, you can stop at any time. All you have to do, is return to the sensation of your breath, wiggle your fingers and toes and feel the ground beneath you as you open your eyes. Drop in and out as feels good for you to do so. If you fall asleep, don't worry at all. This is your practice to engage with as you wish, and perhaps sleep is exactly the rest you need right now. The Resting Tea invites you to create an intention to help support you for this coming moon cycle. Start to have a think about what you might wish this intention to be, but hold it loosely, don't let it be too rigid. Walk with it and see what simple sentence or word comes back to you time and again. The New Moon is in the astrological sign of Cancer, which manifests itself with feelings of safety related to the home and family. It offers the opportunity to forgive and forget, to let go of overthinking, to distance ourselves without feelings of bitterness. The invitation is to use these manifestations as a potential container for your intention. The Resting tea will take us on a little journey with our breath, around our body, out into space, and home to ourselves. Everything with Deep Rest is an invitation and there is never any enforced way of engaging with the Practice. Have a journal and pen ready for if you wish to take any notes afterwards. Also, have a favourite mug with your favourite tea ready for straight afterwards too. Get yourself comfortable, and we will begin. (Image by Daniel R. Other topics: the FURTHER project seeing how far athletes can go, our one at-home recommendation to improve your quality of life, the most weird heart rate responses to stress, WHOOP's new use of AI, Transvulcania leaving the UTMB World Series, Jim Walmsley getting a golden ticket to Western States, a wonderful new study on ultras, and hot takes. Stick around for a beautiful listener corner email at the end that will bring tears to your eyes and put fire in your belly!
