(00:00 – 26:45) – Jimmy Cook opens the show as the guest host and immediately begins to hype up the Pacers 6th pick in the NBA Draft, Bennedict Mathurin. Jimmy then goes on to talk about other draft picks and where they fell in the first round. Discussion turns to whether or not Malcom Brogdon is tradeable right now in his career and at this point in the season. (26:46 – 41:02) – 93.1 WIBC's Jason Hammer joins the show to talk about the Pacers draft. Jason discusses how he feels as though things are looking a bit too good and that something must go wrong eventually due to his superstitions. Jimmy and Hammer then talk about how this roster isn't complete yet and to expect at least a Myles Turner or Malcom Brogdon trade before the season begins. Then as is always the case when Hammer joins the show there was a little bit of NBA draft bet talk to close out the segment. (41:03 – 47:52) – Draft talk continues as Jimmy takes calls regarding the Pacers first round selection in Bennedict Mathurin. (47:53 – 1:12:38) Former NBA Front Office Executive Dan Purcell joins the show to talk about the overall reaction to the NBA Draft. Jimmy asks Purcell if he believes Mathurin will be seen as one of, if not the best, player in this draft. Purcell then credits the Detroit Piston's for managing to finesse Jaden Ivey at the fifth pick in the draft and the chances the New York Knicks made at trying to trade for him during the draft. Jimmy then gets Purcell's take on Brogdon's ability to be traded. (1:12:39 – 1:26:21) – Tony East of Forbes and the “Locked On Pacers Podcast” joins the show to provide a national perspective on yesterday's NBA Draft. East gives his take on what Bennedict Mathurin can provide to the Pacers this season and also touches on the Pacers trading up to acquire Kendall Brown from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Jimmy asks if there were any surprises in how the draft board panned out especially given the lack of trades early on. (1:26:22 – 1:36:09) – Hour three closes out with more on Jimmy's take about the market for Malcom Brogdon. He offers takes on either recruiting younger stars or opening up cap space and earning more draft options going forward. (1:36:10 – 1:58:04) – The Fan morning show host Kevin Bowen of “Kevin & Query” joined the show and discussed his takes on the NBA Draft last night. He shares excitement in the drafting of Bennedict Mathurin, though not on the same level as Jimmy. Then shares his excitement in the Pacers other draft picks in Andrew Nemhard and Kendall Brown. (1:58:05 – 2:09:48) – Jimmy begins by addressing some of the concerns over not attempting to trade up in the draft. He discusses how this era of the Pacers is breaking away from the Paul George and Victor Oladipo motivations and finding a new player to put as the face of your franchise. (2:09:49 – 2:19:55) – Jimmy gives his closing thoughts on the Pacers draft and then throws it to himself for the plays of the day. Jimmy is taking the Yankees over the Astros, the Red Sox money line over the Guardians. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
E205 Roe is No More! The Heart of Jesus by Paul George
The trio is back to talk the Clippers selecting Moussa Diabate at #43 in the NBA Draft, wonder if Kyrie Irving would be a good fit with the Clippers, Chuck is down to sell the farm for KD, Nic Batum opting out of his contract, and announcing the winners of the greatest podcast giveaway of all time
On today's episode, Jason and Producer Rob G do a deep dive into the reports that Kyrie Irving could force his way to the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers or Los Angeles Clippers if the Brooklyn Nets don't offer him the long-term extension he's been seeking. J-Mac's frustrations with Kyrie are well-documented, but even he seems flabbergasted that Irving thinks he still holds this much power. Kyrie has been a disruptor everywhere he's been for over five years, and we're supposed to believe that teams are still willing to bend over backwards to appease him? Stop it! However, Rob G argues that LeBron James and the Lakers would welcome Irving (and the headache that comes along with him) if it means they can get off the Russell Westbrook contract and put themselves back into championship contention in the same offseason. The Lakers have always been a star-driven franchise; they have never been the type to build and develop for the future. Would the Lakers really tie themselves to old LeBron, mercurial Kyrie and oft-injured Anthony Davis moving forward? Maybe. The guys agree that there's no way the Los Angeles Clippers would get involved considering how much depth they already have alongside Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, but the New York Knicks are probably even more desperate than the Lakers to land another star so it's entirely possible they mortgage their future for Kyrie. Either way, this Kyrie Irving soap opera is far from finished. Click here to subscribe, rate and review all of the latest Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre podcasts! E201 Rock and Birth, In-Corruptible, Faith and Miracles by Paul George
In a 3 part series a deep dive look into Danny Ainge career as a General Manager and what we can learn from how he might run the Utah Jazz. Ainge's career has 4 stages and yesterday we look at the first two the rebuild to the Championship. Today we look at the two fleeces he pulled off that lead to a contender that could be a championship team. The final signature of Danny Ainge's career in Boston is the deals not made. A different times the Boston Celtics were in the midst of trade rumors involving Jimmy Butler, Paul George, Kawhi Leonard and Anthony Davis. Non of the deals got done and it left Ainge with a reputation of not wanting to do deals unless he won dramatically, In retrospect is that true? These deals also tells us one item that is very telling toward what the Jazz might do. The common threads of Ainge's career are a great read of the moment, a variety in the types of players he acquires, added value that matters, perfect recognition of his talent, fleecing of other teams and he doesn't always hit on this draft picks but he doesn't miss.
