Why Music Matters With Jeff Miers

Hello, music lovers!  Welcome to Why Music Matters, a podcast where we examine the power and influence that music can wield in our lives.  I'm your host, Jeff Miers. On today's episode, we're celebrating the Goo Goo Dolls, and in particular, the 30th anniversary of their mainstream breakthrough album, A Boy Named Goo.  Though the band had already been around for a decade by the time they released this album, which would go on to reach double platinum sales status, A Boy Named Goo pushed the band over the edge, largely on the strength of the timeless hit, Name.  This summer, the band is on the road, co-headlining the Summer Anthem Tour, alongside Dashboard Confessional. That tour hits KeyBank Center in Buffalo on August 9 - nearly 30 years after the Goos played the very first show in what was then known as Marine Midland Arena, on September 21, 1996.  I caught up with Goos co-founder and bassist Robby Takac from the road, a few days into the Summer Anthem Tour, and we talked about A Boy Named Goo; the new generation of Goo Goo Dolls fans who discovered the band through social media outlets; the level of excitement surrounding this summer's shows; his upcoming Music is Art Festival - which takes place in and around the Terminal B Amphitheater on Buffalo's Outer Harbor on Saturday, September 20 - and the whole long, strange, and largely wonderful trip that has led the Goo Goo Dolls from the stages of Buffalo clubs to the arenas of the world.  Welcome back to Why Music Matters, Robby Takac!  Produced by 678Main Studio and Creative Services https://678main.com

According to a September 2023 Pew Research Center survey, more than one in five Black adults in the United States believe that owning a business is essential for achieving financial success. Although Black-owned businesses have experienced significant growth in recent years, they still represent a small percentage of overall firms and revenue in the U.S., based on our analysis of federal data.   In 2021, majority Black-owned businesses accounted for only about 3% of all U.S. firms that could be classified by the race and ethnicity of their owners. These businesses generated just 1% of the total gross revenue from all classifiable companies that year, while roughly 14% of the American population identified as Black.   In 2021, Black or African American majority-owned firms provided income for approximately 1.4 million workers, with estimated annual payrolls of $53.6 billion. However, most Black-owned firms tend to be smaller enterprises. Two-thirds of these businesses had fewer than 10 employees, 13% had between 10 and 49 employees, and only 3% had 50 or more employees. Additionally, 16% reported having no employees at all (employment size is determined by the number of paid workers during the March 12 pay period according to the ABS).   Arias WebsterBerry is a seasoned entrepreneur, digital marketing expert, and certified Scrum Master with over a decade of experience. He is the founder of WebsterBerry Marketing, an agency that redefines digital marketing, and Ignite Funnels, a platform dedicated to accelerating business growth. Arias's influence extends beyond marketing; he is a Master Sales Coach who has trained and developed over 400 sales professionals, collectively generating over $112 million in revenue for various companies.   Notably, Arias served as the Executive Producer of the Hip Hop 101 Music and Art Festival, a groundbreaking event that featured Grammy Award-winning artists such as Janelle Monáe, Common, Ludacris, and Mix Master Mike from the Beastie Boys. This festival celebrated artistic achievements and embraced Hip-Hop culture through music, art, and lyrics, earning Arias a commendation from the Los Angeles City Council for his exceptional contributions to the arts.   Arias's journey is characterized by a dedication to excellence and a commitment to helping businesses thrive. Admire the Street Art Reykjavík's streets are alive with color and creativity, thanks to the city's vibrant street art scene. Murals, graffiti, and sculptures can be found on walls, buildings, and even sidewalks throughout the city. Many works are commissioned by local businesses or created during festivals like the Reykjavík Art Festival, showcasing the talents of both Icelandic and international artists. These artworks often tell stories about Icelandic culture, folklore, or social issues, adding a layer of depth to your exploration. Walking through areas like Laugavegur, Hlemmur, and Grandi, you'll discover a mix of playful, thought-provoking, and visually stunning pieces. The ever-changing nature of street art ensures that no two visits to Reykjavík will be the same. Visit Hallgrímskirkja Church Hallgrímskirkja is one of Reykjavík's most recognizable landmarks, drawing visitors from all over the world. This towering church, named after the Icelandic poet and clergyman Hallgrímur Pétursson, is an architectural marvel designed to resemble Iceland's basalt lava flows. The striking exterior is a tribute to the country's unique natural landscapes, and it stands as a symbol of Reykjavík's skyline. While the tower requires a fee to access its panoramic views, entering the main hall is free of charge. Inside, the church's simplicity and minimalist design create a serene and spiritual atmosphere. The massive pipe organ, built by Johannes Klais of Bonn, is a highlight of the interior.Visitors are often treated to organ recitals that fill the space with mesmerizing sounds. Outside the church, don't miss the statue of Leif Erikson, a gift from the United States commemorating the Norse explorer's discovery of North America. The sculptures, crafted in bronze and stone, range from dramatic and thought-provoking to serene and whimsical. As you wander through the garden, you'll gain insight into Iceland's cultural heritage and the artist's unique perspective. The peaceful setting, combined with the stunning views of the city, makes this garden a perfect spot for reflection and inspiration. Best of all, access to the garden is completely free, allowing visitors to enjoy world-class art without spending a penny. The Einar Jónsson Sculpture Garden is a testament to Reykjavík's vibrant art scene and its commitment to making culture accessible to all. 4. Artist and academic Sequoia Danielle Barnes redresses the ugly side of kitsch and ‘cute' toy cultures, telling histories of trickster rabbits from Peter Rabbit to Bugs Bunny, appropriated from Black Southern American folklore from the 16th century to now. With ceramics, fabrics, and super sticky slugs, Sequoia Danielle Barnes' new installation is an Afro-surrealist retelling of Br'er Rabbit and the Tar Baby, a folktale developed by her enslaved ancestors after being ripped from Africa and displaced in Alabama, in the United States - the place she grew up before pursuing her practice in ‘transatlantic' institutions. Here, stories about figures like Uncle Remus, Uncle Ben, and Aunt Jemima, often first told as a means of action guidance for outsmarting slavemasters, were mainstreamed into 20th century pop art and cultures. Sequoia's exhibition takes its title from the 1946 film, Song of the South, a nostalgic representation of the antebellum, pre-Confederate South, revealing how ‘cuteness' masks anti-Black racist tropes and propaganda. We discuss how popular consumption of Western/European films, TV adverts, and commercials can perpetuate forms of oppression and marginalisation, including racialisation, infantilism, violence, and the cannibalisation of enslaved peoples. Sequoia tells of her interest in ‘Tellytubby lore', how children's cartoons and animations can sustain critical traditions of surrealism, and why younger people more readily engage with her work than adults. From her creepy and uncanny collectibles, we discuss why major institutions protect and preserve golliwogs, golly, and ‘piccaninny' dolls, and Sequoia's ‘Black radical art practice' in spaces like CCA Glasgow, Fruitmarket, and the National Museum of Scotland. Sequoia shares her subversive influences from the Black diaspora, including Faith Ringgold, Betye Saars, Robert Colescott, and Eddie Chambers. With Theaster Gates, Patrick Kelly, Joe Casely-Hayford,, we explore Afrofuturism, and find entanglements in their own practice, between works with textiles, fashion, and pottery. Beneath the dark humour and sweet surfaces of their works, Sequoia speaks of connections between contemporary consumption and capitalism, and historic sugar cane plantations. exposing how legacies of colonialism, slavery, and global trade still shape society today. Sequoia Danielle Barnes: Everything Is Satisfactual runs at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop until 28 August 2024. The exhibition is part of Edinburgh Art Festival (EAF) 2024, which continues in Scotland until 25 August 2024.
