On July 3, 2021, Matt Atkinson led a Battlewalk from the Virginia Memorial across the field of Pickett's Charge to the Union position at The Angle. Many were surprised to see Matt's special guest, actor Stephen Lang, who played General George E. Pickett in the movie Gettysburg. Mr Lang has been a very generous supporter of the Gettysburg Foundation and GNMP. Word is that he postponed his departure for home just to make this appearance.
On this special episode, recorded at the Copse of Trees, Licensed Battlefield Guides, Tim Smith, Jim Hessler and Jessie Wheedleton join Matt and Bob to talk about July 3, 1863 and the days following the battle. Francis helms a history episode and the guys explore the Battle of Gettysburg and tackle a what if in the process. Would Stonewall have made the outcome very different in Pennsylvania? And there's more to it than just Culp's Hill. Yes, "The Killer Angels" and Gettysburg get a mention. We would be remiss if we didn't mention the episode publishes on the anniversary of Day 3 of the battle, which included Pickett's Charge.
Go to the Virginia Memorial, park, and head towards the paved path that skirts the treeline. Right there at the entrance of the path, is the Wayside Marker for Pickett's Charge. This will be a continuation of the "Battles for Civil War Memory", which the guys hope to return to soon in a larger, feature-length episode. Franklin, Tennessee is a warm small town that just oozes history. The Civil War's Battle of Franklin took place in this town in 1864. This was one of the Confederate Army's worst battles. In fact, the assault has been dubbed "The Pickett's Charge of the West." The Carter House, the Lotz House and Carnton Mansion sit where the battle took place. As is the case with so many battlefields around the world, this one is reputed to be haunted as are the nearby homes. Join us as we explore this fascinating town, the horrific battle and the history and hauntings of the Franklin Battlefield. Moment in Oddity features Portugal's Stone House as suggested by Jorge Almeyda and This Day in History features US acquisition of the Panama Canal researched by Jessica Bell. This location was suggested by listener Thomas Cartwright. “Pickett’s Charge in History and Memory” If, as many have argued, the Civil War is the most crucial moment in our national life and Gettysburg its turning point, then the climax of the climax, the central moment of our history, must be Pickett's Charge. But as Carol Reardon notes, the Civil War saw many other daring assaults and stout defenses. Why, then, is it Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg--and not, for example, Richardson's Charge at Antietam or Humphreys's Assault at Fredericksburg--that looms so large in the popular imagination? As this innovative study reveals, by examining the events of 3 July 1863 through the selective and evocative lens of 'memory' we can learn much about why Pickett's Charge endures so strongly in the American imagination. Over the years, soldiers, journalists, veterans, politicians, orators, artists, poets, and educators, Northerners and Southerners alike, shaped, revised, and even sacrificed the 'history' of the charge to create 'memories' that met ever-shifting needs and deeply felt values. Reardon shows that the story told today of Pickett's Charge is really an amalgam of history and memory. The evolution of that mix, she concludes, tells us much about how we come to understand our nation's past.

I've been busy busy busy lately so in this episode I find time to talk about games I may talk about some day. Then, I look closely at In Magnificent Style by Hermann Luttmann and published by Victory Point Games. This is a neat little game about the Pickett's Charge during the Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War.
