Join us for an exploration of art and materials in this interview Nathan Terborg, recorded at his solo exhibition at Galerie Benjamin Eck in Munich. Nathan skillfully transforms found objects into thought-provoking art pieces. Discover how his early experiences in his grandfather's woodshop influenced his artistic journey, leading him away from traditional painting towards an immersive sculptural practice. Nathan dives into the essence of experimentation, stressing how the relationship between artist and materials is foundational to creating meaningful work. Nathan's approach of curiosity and discovery emphasizes that artistic freedom resides in the acceptance of imperfection and the willingness to explore beyond the surface. The conversation also highlights the importance of communication through art, with Nathan referencing the impactful words of Louise Bourgeois. This insight showcases the intrinsic value of art as an unspoken language that connects both the creator and observer. By drawing from personal anecdotes and professional insights, Nathan inspires listeners to reconsider their interactions with materials and art forms. As he encourages audiences to engage with sculptures tactually, he elucidates the transformative potential hidden within the discarded. Dive into this rich dialogue on creativity and allow yourself to be inspired by the alchemy of art! Make sure to subscribe, share, and leave your thoughts in the comments! For the 34th episode of "Reading the Art World," host Megan Fox Kelly speaks with Sebastian Smee, Pulitzer Prize-winning art critic for The Washington Post and author of "Paris in Ruins: Love, War, and the Birth of Impressionism,” published by W. W. Norton. This fascinating conversation explores the violent political upheavals of 1870-71 Paris — the Siege of Paris and the Paris Commune — and how they influenced the Impressionist movement. Smee shares insights into the lives of the artists who survived these dramatic days, including Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet and Berthe Morisot, who were trapped in Paris; Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Frédéric Bazille, who joined regiments outside of the capital; and Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro, who fled the country just in time.Through rigorous research into personal letters and historical documents, Smee illuminates the human context behind familiar masterpieces of light created during this dark period. He offers a fresh perspective on why the Impressionists, with their newfound sense of the fragility of life, turned toward transient subjects of modern life, leisure, fleeting moments and the impermanence of all things in the aftermath of such devastating events.ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sebastian Smee is an art critic for The Washington Post and winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. His previous works include "The Art of Rivalry" and books on Mark Bradford and Lucian Freud. He was awarded the Rabkin Prize for art journalism in 2018 and was a MacDowell Fellow in 2021.PURCHASE THE BOOK https://wwnorton.com/books/9781324006954SUBSCRIBE, FOLLOW AND HEAR INTERVIEWS:For more information, visit meganfoxkelly.com, hear our past interviews, and subscribe at the bottom of our Of Interest page for new posts.Follow us on Instagram: @meganfoxkelly"Reading the Art World" is a live interview and podcast series with leading art world authors hosted by art advisor Megan Fox Kelly. In her new book, The Unseen Truth: When Race Changed Sight in America (Harvard University Press), the historian and Harvard professor Sarah Lewis unpacks a major part of United States history that until now wasn't just brushed over, but was intentionally buried: how the Caucasian War and the end of the Civil War were conflated by P.T. Barnum, former President Woodrow Wilson, and others to shape how we see race in America. Long overdue, The Unseen Truth is a watershed book about photography and visuality that calls to mind works by history-shaping authors such as James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, and bell hooks. Lewis is also the founder of the Vision & Justice initiative, which strives to educate the public about the importance of art and culture for equity and justice in the U.S., and is launching a new publishing venture with Aperture this fall.On the episode, she discusses the tension between pedagogy and propaganda; the deep influence of Frederick Douglass's 1861 “Pictures and Progress” lecture on her work; how a near-death car crash altered the course of her life and The Unseen Truth; and the special ability of certain photographs to stop time.Special thanks to our Season 10 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Sarah Lewis[04:01] The Unseen Truth[05:24] Woodrow Wilson[05:24] Frederick Douglass[05:24] P.T. "I am influenced by many things—1980's guitars, VHS tapes, World War I battleships, sunrise/sunset gradients, moiré patterns, and more. Over the past 3 years, ‘notions of cycle' have played an increased role in the development of my paintings; and I'm curious how the avant-garde succeeds and fails within popular culture. Currently, I'm interested in how the landscape has been depicted throughout American culture. Whether it's Thomas Cole and Albert Bierstadt of the Hudson River School, Georgia O'Keeffe's monumental work at the Art Institute of Chicago, or an Instagram post of a sunset—each conveys a romanticized view of our world. The most recent paintings are an amalgamation of experiences that I've had within the American landscape; with each painting flowing freely between representation and abstraction." [00:30] Drive-by Media Dishonesty (38 minutes)The establishment media is rejoicing (again) that “the walls are closing in” on Donald Trump, but the facts tell a different story. Just the News reported that Donald Trump completely cooperated with a grand jury subpoena for documents two months ago, allowing FBI agents and a DOJ lawyer to search his presidential records storage locker in Mar-a-Lago. Mr. Trump even added a stronger padlock to the locker after the FBI recommended it. Trump told them, “Look, whatever you need, let us know.” Meanwhile, FBI Director Christopher Wray sidestepped questions regarding the possibility of FBI agents planting evidence during the Mar-a-Lago raid. [38:45] Exposing Obama? (17 minutes)What were FBI agents really looking for in the Mar-a-Lago raid? Conservative Treehouse author Mark Bradford speculates that they were searching for declassified documents about Barack Obama's spying campaign against Trump, which the DOJ and FBI have kept from being released. Paul Sperry made the same point on Twitter earlier this week, which resulted in his account being suspended. The devil hates exposure and so do his agents! This situation has many parallels to the Philadelphia Church of God's court battle for Herbert W. Armstrong's books and booklets, when the Worldwide Church of God tried to prevent us from keeping documents that exposed them.

In conversations with the likes of the late Virgil Abloh, Mark Bradford, Rashid Johnson, Steve McQueen and more, Lutz has become the conduit to an overlooked conversation in not only our society but the art world as well. In this episode of the Radio Juxtapoz podcast, we speak to Lutz about putting this new book together, how open his subjects allowed themselves to be, growing up in LA, his own mental heath battles, how religion played a role in his life and how a move to Hawaii has settled his mind. The Radio Juxtapoz podcast is hosted by FIFTH WALL TV's Doug Gillen and Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. Episode 092 was recorded on July 29, 2022 in LA, Oahu and Margate. Follow us on @radiojuxtapoz

A 199-foot tall metal flag-pole-like sculpture is mounted with a flashing light which playfully spells out “What Hath God Wrought” in Morse Code. The titular phrase is notably the first message Samuel Morse tested and transmitted across 41 miles in 1844. The sculpture reflects both the origins of the university as well as the origins of present-day communications: Morse Code is at the root of our contemporary era of information exchange, where communication travels instantaneously. Morse's good-humored, secular message is interpreted thoughtfully by Mark Bradford and aligned with the artist's expansive work depicting communities and reflecting on our shared cultural history. With this epic artwork, Bradford explores the physical means behind past and present-day communication that underlines his greater practice.
