The event. A firmware flaw in Coldcard seed generation, disclosed the night before, let an attacker recompute private keys outright. By airtime, 594 Bitcoin, put at roughly $38 million on the show, had been swept from about 500 wallets. The mechanism. Yan Pritzker and Swan engineer Steve: the device's true random number generator was present and working, but a March 2021 library change meant the firmware silently stopped using it, falling back to software randomness seeded from device ID and clock. Why five years passed. The code looked correctly wired, the failure hinged on a build-time variable, and the output still looked random. Zach Herbert of Foundation said a researcher flagged something adjacent in 2022 without unraveling it. Who is exposed. Only seeds the Coldcard generated itself. Imported seeds are safe, dice rolls are safe, a long passphrase saved people. MK3 is worst hit. MK4, MK5 and Q sit near 72 bits, costly to attack but not impossible. Updating firmware does not fix it. Coinkite patched, including MK3, but the vulnerable seed is the problem, not the device. You must generate a new seed and move funds. The dice function was never affected and has now been audited. Multisig is not automatically safe. If most keys came from affected devices, an attacker can try permutations, and spending publishes your public keys and invites an RBF race. Wicked pointed people to Portland.HODL for private broadcast through Slipstream. The attacker looks unsophisticated. The sweep ran roughly 25 minutes into a handful of addresses, stopped at shallow address gaps, and queried a public node instead of running one. Block researchers identified that service, so there may be a lead. The industry reckoning. American HODL called it a Paul Revere moment and demanded podcasters and former sponsors broadcast immediately. Reardon argued the industry spent three years arguing over the wrong priorities and got caught by an entropy bug. Self-custody versus diversification. Wicked held that multi-vendor multisig with your own entropy beats any custodian. Joe Carlasare countered that every system rests on assumptions that eventually fail. Yan declined to preach one model, calling self-custody still very early. Swan's status and the scam wave. Yan confirmed Swan Vault is built on Blockstream Jade and unaffected, and reported an influx of deposits. He flagged a devious scam variant where attackers send you working seed words and ask you to deposit into them.

"Spider veins" was a scary name for a little girl who was afraid of spiders. As it turns out, it's a scary name for a lot of grown-ups too — and one of the biggest reasons people put off getting evaluated. On this Community Health edition of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael welcomes Dr. Emily Reardon, board-certified vascular surgeon with Valley Health Vascular Surgeons, for a genuinely reassuring conversation about vein health — what varicose veins and spider veins actually are, why they happen, when they're cosmetic and when they're medically significant, and just how minimally invasive today's treatments really are. Dr. Reardon walks through the diagnostic starting point (an in-office ultrasound to check for any deeper reflux), the treatment ladder for both spider veins (sclerotherapy — small injections, no anesthesia, no downtime) and varicose veins (in-office endovascular ablations plus, when needed, small micro-phlebectomy incisions to remove the visible larger veins), and the everyday, non-medical steps that help genuinely: regular walking, compression stockings for long sitting or standing days, healthy weight, healthy diet. She also clears up the single biggest patient misconception — that vein disease is a circulation emergency threatening amputation. It isn't. Varicose veins are a drainage issue in the superficial venous system, not an artery blockage. Plus: what's covered by insurance (spoiler: much more than most people think), the recurrence rate (~10%), why vascular surgery is embracing "less than minimally invasive" techniques, and the open-door policy at Dr. Reardon's Winchester and Front Royal offices — no ultrasound needed for the first consultation. WHAT DR. REARDON WANTS YOU TO KNOW VEIN DISEASE ≠ CIRCULATION EMERGENCY- The single biggest misconception Dr. Reardon hears is that varicose or spider veins mean blockages, poor circulation, or amputation risk. They don't. The arteries in the legs — which carry vital blood flow to the feet and muscles — are a completely different system. Vein disease is about DRAINAGE, not supply. Even severe cases progress to skin problems and slow-healing wounds — treatable, not catastrophic. TREATMENTS HAVE CHANGED DRAMATICALLY - Modern vein care is far less invasive than it was even a decade ago. Most procedures are done in-office with injections or through IV-based techniques. The old "stripping" surgeries have been largely replaced by endovascular ablation and micro-phlebectomies (small incisions to remove larger surface veins). Recovery is fast, downtime is minimal, and most patients don't need to take time off work. TREATMENT PATH AT A GLANCE SPIDER VEINS (small superficial veins) Treatment: Sclerotherapy — a liquid detergent injected via small needles • Anesthesia: None needed • Downtime: None • Insurance: Usually out-of-pocket (unless deeper reflux is found) • Sessions: Typically multiple, to reach full result VARICOSE VEINS (larger, often with deeper feeder veins) Treatment: Ultrasound to check for deeper reflux, then a combination of: Endovascular ablation of the deeper vein (through an IV) and/or Micro-phlebectomy for the visible larger veins (small incisions) • Anesthesia: Minimal (typically local) • Downtime: Minimal • Insurance: Typically covered • Sessions: Usually one treatment per leg EVERYDAY STEPS TO PROTECT YOUR VEIN HEALTH • Walk regularly — even short intervals help • Avoid long stretches of sitting OR standing without moving • Wear compression stockings on long-sit or long-stand days • Maintain a healthy weight • Get evaluated when things look or feel different — a consultation is the fastest way to know if it's cosmetic or medically significant WHO'S A GOOD CANDIDATE Because vein treatments are low-risk, most people are candidates regardless of age or coexisting health issues. In this episode of Mind the Kids, the podcast from the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health (ACAMH), host Clara Faria, academic clinical fellow in child psychiatry, is joined by Dr. Tessa Reardon, research fellow in the departments of experimental psychology and psychiatry at the University of Oxford.Dr. Reardon shares findings from her recently published paper in JCPP, the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, co-authored with colleagues. Drawing on the My Cats cluster randomised controlled trial, the study recruited children aged four to seven identified as being at heightened risk for anxiety disorders through schools across England. The intervention — known as OSI (Online Support and Intervention for Child Anxiety) — is a parent-led, therapist-supported online cognitive behavioural therapy programme, in which parents work through digital modules of approximately 20 minutes each, supported by brief telephone or video calls with a children's wellbeing practitioner, amounting to around two and a half hours of contact time in total.The research sits against a backdrop of a growing gap between the need for child mental health support and access to evidence-based care. CAMHS thresholds are high, and many families cannot access help until difficulties are already entrenched — yet anxiety disorders in children can onset as early as age five and a half. Schools offer a distinctive opportunity to reach families before problems escalate, and England's Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) represent a trained, scalable future workforce for delivering this type of early intervention in child mental health.The primary outcome — anxiety disorder diagnosis at 12 months — showed fewer diagnoses in the intervention group, though the difference did not reach statistical significance. All secondary outcomes were statistically significant, however, including reductions in child anxiety symptoms, inhibited temperament, parental anxiety, and targeted child and parent behaviours. Approximately three quarters of families completed the programme — a notably strong completion rate for a school-recruited, at-risk population who were not actively help-seeking. But Mardi Reardon-Smith's Making Do: Conservation Ethics and Ecological Care in Australia, published by Stanford University Press in 2025, dismantles that comforting narrative and replaces it with something far more complex and candid. Set on the Cape York Peninsula, the book explores how Aboriginal traditional owners, pastoralists, conservation workers, and government institutions navigate landscapes shaped by colonialism, climate instability, species diversity, cattle grazing, fire, and ecological loss. What emerges is not a story of heroes versus villains but a portrait of people trying to “make do” within damaged systems. One of the book's most provocative arguments is that care itself can be violent. Perhaps most importantly, Making Do rejects the illusion that environmental crises can be neatly solved. The challenge now is not to return to an imagined past but to learn how to build livable futures amid uncertainty.
