The Orlando Pride have won an NWSL match for the first time since June 13. The Pride went to San Diego and not only remained unbeaten there, but also got a winning goal from Carson Pickett after Jacquie Ovalle's first goal for Orlando was canceled out three minutes later when Anna Moorhouse gifted Dudinha an easy goal at the other end with a careless giveaway. We discuss a win for a change, check on our score predictions from last week, and make our selections for Player of the Match. This week's mailbagbox gave us a trivia question and asked us about Pickett as a striker, the end of Orlando's curse, and more. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. You can use that same hashtag and hit @TheManeLand.bsky.social up on Bluesky. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. We'd also appreciate any ratings or reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we'll find them easily and read them on the show.We touched on the Pride's trip to Mexico City to face Club America with the top spot in the group on the line in Concacaf W Champions Cup play. Finally, we looked ahead to Friday's visit to Houston to complete the season series against the Dash. We provided the series history and our key matchups and made our final score predictions. If you'd like to support our independent writing and podcasting efforts, we'd love to have you as a subscriber or donor over at our Buy Me a Coffee site. Here's how Episode 103 went down:0:15 – The Pride got back in the win column against struggling San Diego. It's been a minute since we've experienced a win, so Pride fans will take three points any way they can.18:07 - The mailbagbox is trivial but also anything but trivial.33:46 - The Pride will play twice more on the road before coming home. Can they build on their win in California?
The Rugby World Cup has been the culmination of a stellar summer of women's sport and a second huge win for an England women's side. And there's lots to celebrate for the other home nations too. The final broke records across the board - it was the most watched women's rugby match ever on UK television and had a record-breaking number of spectators in the stadium too. Nuala McGovern is joined by Maggie Alphonsi, who was part of the England squad that won the 2014 Women's Rugby World Cup in France, Deborah Griffin, organiser of the first Women's Rugby World Cup back in 1991, now the first female President of the Rugby Football Union, and Sarah Massey, Managing Director of the tournament. Many of us will remember the multi-award winning Tracey Ullman from her TV shows A Kick up the Eighties, Three of a Kind, as well as The Tracey Ullman Show, which was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Tracey joins Nuala to discuss her latest role in the film Steve, in which she plays the deputy head in a last chance reform school for troubled teenage boys. Janet Skinner fell victim to the Post Office Horizon IT scandal, and was temporarily paralysed after the stress of her ordeal. She was wrongly convicted of false accounting in 2007 and sentenced to nine months in prison after the faulty software said £59,000 had gone missing from her branch account in Hull. Janet has now received an offer of full financial redress, which is 15% of her compensation claim. Janet shares her story and her reaction to that offer with Nuala. As people across the country celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen, a new retelling of her book Emma is currently on at the Rose Theatre in Kingston upon Thames. It swaps drawing room duets for dance floor fillers and this Emma Woodhouse is fresh from failing at Oxford University and back in her Essex hometown for the summer, along with her closest friend Harriet, a total dating disaster. It's been written by Ava Pickett who tells Nuala about her modern retake of this Austen classic.Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Andrea Kidd

Today's word of the day is ‘crumble' as in not the cookie as in the Yankees as in the Mets as in playoff races as in falling apart. Let's start with the Yankees. Another blown save from Devin Williams. Another bullpen acquisition given up a walk off homer. What about the Mets? They've been bad since mid-June! Starting pitching stinks. (17:00) Let's review our July predictions. And then discuss some August predictions. (22:30) Can you be a star in a small market in baseball? Can Elly De La Cruz be a star in Cincinnati? Let's discuss because David Ortiz and Derek Jeter had some thoughts. (34:00) Review: The Life of Chuck. (38:30) What is the Browns plan at quarterback? Is it Flacco? Is it Pickett? Is it Gabriel? Is it Sanders? Is it Watson? Is it Huntley? (44:30) The Chargers/Lions preseason game was watched by 6.9 million people. Wow. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Four days before Christmas in 1957, Clarence Horatious Pickett, a preacher and newspaper ad salesman in Columbus, Georgia, walked into town to pick up his paycheck. Forty-eight years old and known as “Reverend” to many, the tall, lean man with wire-rimmed glasses left his home and headed toward The Columbus World, a black newspaper where Pickett worked. Pickett, who’d been a boy preacher, was showing signs of mental instability and had spent time in the county jail and the state mental hospital, which was notorious for employing doctors with addictions, poor training and racist beliefs. Before the day was over, Pickett would be arrested, jailed, and beaten senseless by a white police officer. An examining physician would conclude that Pickett was “putting on.” He wasn’t. His injuries would lead to his death two days later. Pickett’s killing would spur police and FBI investigations where a remarkable number of eyewitnesses would come forward to testify on what they saw. But would an all-white criminal justice system bring charges against a white cop for beating a black man? Season 5 of Buried Truths follows the story of Pickett and the criminal justice and medical professionals who failed him. Why was he thrown in jail in the first place? Why wasn't he able to receive adequate medical care in those fragile days after his encounter with police? We'll explore Pickett’s life as a mentally disturbed Black man in the dark heart of the Deep South in the 1950s.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
