B.J. Hessler is the founder and lead instructor at DC Dirt Camp, an off-road riding school in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.  Here she tells us how motorcycling in general, and setting up this operation in particular, have been central to her personal journey, and how her school has much to offer motorcyclists at all levels – including those who ride exclusively on pavement. Send your questions to us via email: podcast@bmwmoa.org. The Ride Inside with Mark Barnes is brought to you by the BMW MOA Foundation and is on the web at BMWOwnersNews.com.

Funny, perceptive and articulate. B.J. Hessler has, seemingly, done it all. From a degree in Latin American studies at Boston University to a career in public health to chucking it all away to run DC Dirt Camp, an east-coast school for off-road riders of all skill levels. But that's not all. B.J. credits riding in the dirt as a major factor in helping to pull her out of a lifestyle that teetered toward addiction.

In 2019, journalist and writer Peter Hessler traveled with his family to China. He'd gotten a gig as a teacher of writing—nonfiction writing in particular—in what he'd hoped would be a sequel to his 2001 book River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze. But plans changed—radically. At the very end of 2019, the COVID-19 virus emerges in Wuhan, leading to chaos as officials frantically try to figure out how to control the new disease. Peter's reporting first wins his criticism from Chinese nationalists angry about his frank discussions of China's mistakes—then criticism from U.S. hawks angry that Hessler gives Beijing credit for what it managed to do right as COVID rapidly spreads around the world. Peter's years in China are covered in his latest book Other Rivers: A Chinese Education (Penguin Press, 2024), published last year. Peter Hessler is a staff writer at the New Yorker, where he served as Beijing correspondent from 2000 to 2007, Cairo correspondent from 2011 to 2016, and Chengdu correspondent from 2019 to 2021. He is the author of The Buried: An Archaeology of the Egyptian Revolution; River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze, which won the Kiriyama Book Prize; Oracle Bones: A Journey Between China's Past and Present, which was a finalist for the National Book Award; Country Driving: A Chinese Road Trip; and Strange Stones: Dispatches from East and West. He won the 2008 National Magazine Award for excellence in reporting, and he was named a MacArthur fellow in 2011. In this week's episode, Marni welcomes Stephanie Hessler to the Life Check Yourself Studio. Stephanie is a seasoned career coach with a rich history on Wall Street, she specializes in helping high-achieving leaders, especially women, break through career roadblocks and reach the next level of success. Today, we're exploring how to reframe self-imposed limitations and create strategies for growth. We discussed common roadblocks many women face, such as undervaluing their achievements, not advocating for themselves, and failing to leverage important relationships. Stephanie offers actionable advice on how to shift mindset, become more strategic, and define a clear path to their desired professional future. Key Takeaways: You won't be promoted just by doing good work. Speak up for your accomplishments. Build connections and don't be afraid to ask for doors to be opened for you. Get crystal clear on who you want to become and start embodying that now.   1. Advocating for Yourself (4:20) Women often fall into the trap of thinking hard work will automatically be recognized and rewarded. This mindset leads to frustration as promotions or opportunities don't materialize, especially as they rise into leadership roles. Advocating for oneself is not about boasting, but about owning and showcasing the value you bring. "Women make the mistake of thinking because they've done a great job, they'll automatically be promoted. That simply doesn't happen." 2. Strategic Networking and Relationship Leverage (5:55) Women often excel at building relationships but hesitate when it comes to using those connections to advance their careers. It is important to use networks strategically, not just for support but to open new professional doors. "Women are skilled at relationships, but they neglect to leverage the people they know." 3. Defining and Embodying Your Future Self (15:00) A critical aspect of career growth is envisioning the person you want to become. Getting granular about what success looks like for you, whether it's compensation, work environment, or the kind of people you want to work with. From there, begin showing up as that person now. In 1996, when Peter Hessler first went to China to teach, almost all of his students were first-generation college students. Most came from large rural families, and their parents, subsistence farmers, could offer little guidance as their children entered a new world. By 2019, when Mr. Hessler arrived at Sichuan University, he found a very different China, as well as a new kind of student – an only child whose schooling was the object of intense focus from a much more ambitious cohort of parents.     China's education system offers a means of examining the country's past, present, and future.  At a time when anti-Chinese rhetoric in America has grown intense, Other Rivers is a work of empathy that shows us China from the inside out and the bottom up.   In an interview conducted on August 6, 2024, Peter Hessler, in conversation with Lenora Chu, looks at Chinese education as a way to understand both China and the United States.  About the speakers: https://www.ncuscr.org/video/peter-hessler-other-rivers/  Follow Peter Hessler on X: @peterhessler  Follow Lenora Chu on X: @LenoraChu  Subscribe to the National Committee on YouTube for video of this interview. Few Americans know contemporary China better than Peter Hessler. The author of four prize winning books about life in China as well as the former China correspondent of the New Yorker, Hessler originally came to China as a Peace Corps volunteer in 1996 and has been writing about the day-to-day life of the country ever since. In contrast with the geopolitical crowd with their bellicose nonsense about the totalitarian evils of Xi's China, Hessler, whose twin daughters were educated in a local state-run elementary school, has spent the last quarter century talking with ordinary Chinese people about ordinary things. In his latest book, Other Rivers: A Chinese Education, Hessler offers intimate narrative about two generations of students in China's heartland. In an America unthinkingly preoccupied with the “China threat”, Hessler provides an accurate window onto real life in this much misunderstood country. Peter Hessler is a staff writer at The New Yorker, where he served as Beijing correspondent from 2000 to 2007, Cairo correspondent from 2011 to 2016, and Chengdu correspondent from 2019 to 2021. He is the author of The Buried, which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award; River Town, which won the Kiriyama Prize; Oracle Bones, which was a finalist for the National Book Award; Country Driving; and Strange Stones. He won the 2008 National Magazine Award for excellence in reporting, and he was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2011.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children. This is a public episode. In this episode of Elixir Wizards, Xiang Ji and Nathan Hessler join hosts Sundi Myint and Owen Bickford to compare actor model implementation in Elixir, Ruby, and Clojure. In Elixir, the actor model is core to how the BEAM VM works, with lightweight processes communicating asynchronously via message passing. GenServers provide a common abstraction for building actors, handling messages, and maintaining internal state. In Ruby, the actor model is represented through Ractors, which currently map to OS threads. They discuss what we can learn by comparing models, understanding tradeoffs between VMs, languages, and concurrency primitives, and how this knowledge can help us choose the best tools for a project. Topics discussed in this episode: Difference between actor model and shared memory concurrency Isolation of actor state and communication via message passing BEAM VM design for high concurrency via lightweight processes GenServers as common abstraction for building stateful actors GenServer callbacks for message handling and state updates Agents as similar process abstraction to GenServers Shared state utilities like ETS for inter-process communication Global Interpreter Lock in older Ruby VMs Ractors as initial actor implementation in Ruby mapping to threads Planned improvements to Ruby concurrency in 3.3 Akka implementation of actor model on JVM using thread scheduling Limitations of shared memory concurrency on JVM Project Loom bringing lightweight processes to JVM Building GenServer behavior in Ruby using metaprogramming CSP model of communication using channels in Clojure Differences between BEAM scheduler and thread-based VMs Comparing Elixir to academic languages like Haskell Remote and theScore are hiring!
